Mask:
Tumblr media
A sad story behind both the painting and the mask. The case of Eric Garner of 2014 sparked up the Black Lives Matter movement once again raising the hashtag “#ICANTBREATHE”. The last words of Garner before dying at the hands of police due to excessive force.

Profiling:
The reality of cops and their agendas meaning more than safety and justice. If anything, this text is only but a speck of which is to be said against the bad apples amongst the law enforcement around the world.

Oppression:
It is believed that women have been unjustly treated as lesser than the average man for most of history, and much of this is due to many reasons. From cultural and religious views to psychological reasonings, it has been littered throughout the course of lifetimes that women are unequal to men.

Case study:
Across the world, police brutality has been a issue, but a place well known for it more than others is America. It’s history as of late ( the last century ) has been riddled with accounts of misuse of power within their law enforcement and other roles of significance. The cases of Rodney King and Eric garner being some of the most infamous, the states are no stranger to it, and neither are we. Though not as well known nor frequent as the U.S, NZ has had its fair share of the like. With little squirms here and there yet nothing being regularly published about it, it is no wonder why not everyone share the same fear and distrust that me mine have with Police.
The case study I’ve chosen is the case of Taranaki “Ardie” Fuimaono. Though many other events have happened here in NZ over its history with police, I feel as if it is both the latest and had a big consequence for the cops and their image. As Fuimaono past while in police custody because they failed to put his health before his apprehension, unrest ignited across NZ, especially within the pasifika and “club” (alleged gangs) community. The actions of the police had its effects on their reputation amongst a lot of those in those community’s and I feel that it corresponds with the context and story I’ve chosen.

Story & Art:
The story I would like to tell is one of ruthlessness and injustice. Police Brutality, I have faced it more than once, and many of my boys and family members have as well. I don’t think a detailed story of a single event is what I’ll focus on but I reckon it’d be more of a summary about how we see police after dealing with police brutality. I think it’ll present a interesting way in deepening my storytelling through my art.
After thinking about it for a bit, I’m leaning more towards a mix of oil painting and drawing. Still not sure how I’ll do it and if it will even work but I’m sure the story and context will be pushed further if it does mesh well.

Banksy
Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation.
Active since the 1990s, his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stencilling technique.  His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world.
His work is pretty solid but I think I would probably be better off trying my own style. Although I could probably pull it off and also incorporate his subject matter or something along those lines, I would be better doing my own thing.

Mark “Mister Cartoon” Machado
Mark Machado better known as Mr. Cartoon or more commonly just Cartoon, is an American tattoo artist and graffiti artist based in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in the Harbor area of Los Angeles County, young Cartoon began airbrushing T-shirts and Lowrider cars before adopting the "Fineline Style" tattoo art style, which was developed in the California prison system.
Mister Cartoon is a renowned tattoo artist that has been know to "ink" famous celebrities from Beyonce to 50 cent to Kobe Bryant. This was the ultimate reason I stumbled across Cartoons work and his distinct style, where he draws and paints figures and objects that are significant to his heretical culture and the street culture he was raised around. I like his style as it peaks my interest and I find it relatable to my art practices and life story.
The clowns that show up in a lot of his artwork is linked to both a cultural Mexican figure called Paiaso/Paiasa, and also a very very famous quote amongst the LA street culture. "Smile Now, Cry Later".  The art style is mixed with Mexican culture and graffiti art and I feel as if this style and what Cartoon portrays in his art is really specific and easy to click on.
