your take on the issues with Tove is extremely good but also. why aren't people taking about this more??? I've consumed so much moomin media and saw only brief mentions that brushed over it. For something with a 2019 adaptation you'd think people would be more critical of the source material

I think the main problem is how moomincharacters is managing their brand, and not so much on the individual fans. most people have no way of knowing unless they've bought the comics and seen it for themselves

absolutely I think it should have been adressed at this time, but moomincharacters are overprotective of their brand and they take an "apolitical" approach about it, despite the moomins being rooted in politics. they've never once brought it up or taken a concrete action on how to approach it or put any thought on how they allow publishers to distribute it. the most that's been done was gutsy not including the scene in their adaptation of moomin builds a house, thank goodness.

but aside from that moomincharacters seems to think it safer to just ignore it. they're very profit oriented and moomins is such a beloved series in finland, and finland, of course, has racism problems. bringing up any topic of racism probably feels to them like they're putting the brand at risk, as it is very dependent on its surface appearance for markettability. it's why I and other people I've talked about it with think they were unsually quiet about pride last summer as it coincided with the blm protests

and as a result, when it's kept unspoken like this, most people aren't going to know, especially people outside of finland who don't have such easy access to the source material, and especially people in america, whom the content directly affects

people have tried to bring it up on tumblr but never concisely, yeah, and I think that's just kind of the result when you have something that the fandom as a whole is so distanced from and unaware of that it's kind of like yelling into the void, there doesn't feel like there is much point to it as barely anyone even interacts with the problematic material. ik I've mentioned it before but I've never posted the content for other people to see until now, which I probably should have done earlier
