For some of the more experienced smiths, this may seem a minor victory, but for us, this is pretty massive. Forge welding is a technique that has always escaped us. We developed a new process, for us, to make this a reality. This is a billet of W2 clad in a layer of 15N20, clad in a layer of 1075. The knife we make from this will show visible differentiation between the layers. We are very excited to see what we make with this. Woohoo! I tore the labrum off my left shoulder a few weeks ago, partially dislocated my shoulder while asleep. I have been religiously engaged in physical therapy and healing in an effort to stave away surgery to correct it. Well... finally back at the anvil, carefully swinging the hammer. We decided to do a bit of an experiment. Both of these knives are going to be completed as honesuki kitchen knives. We have always quenched our knives in water, and have achieved good results, but have heard other smiths attest that oil is the way to go. How could we know for ourselves? Both knives are fully hand forged from W2. The knife in the right was winched in Parks 50, the knife in the left in water. What we are seeing, and the picture does not show, is the depth of hardening from the different quenching mediums. The oil does not harden as deeply. As a result, the knife in the right has developed a small hamon roughly 1/8” to 3/16” in width. We noticed that with our wood stabilization, we could run our vacuum pump for hours and hours until there wood stopped bubbling. If we let it sit and start it again, we get bubbles again. So, we wired up an Arduino Nano Every board to control a Relay to run the vacuum pump in a pattern of running for four hours, then let it sit for two. In starting Mugen Forge, we wanted to create a business that while focused on producing high quality knives, was not limited to knife production. A customer reached out to us for help with his car, wanting aid mounting a new air suspension system that might require the development and production of a few custom pieces. This is one such piece. A mounting bracket for the air compressor. We will be 3D printing a prototype from PLA, and then casting the mount from aluminum via lost PLA. An unintentional hamon. As an experiment, we tried quenching in a series of similar knives in water, and in Parks 50 quenching oil to experience the difference. The knives were very thinly clay coated to protect the carbon content of the steel, and this was one result. Our first guess is that this a visible indicator of the hardening depth of oil. As our deadline looms, we are also nearing completion of our in house challenge. Production has offered us several challenges as well as yielded us several pleasant surprises. We have had design issues, broken bandsaw blades, shattering drill bits, incomplete stabilized wood epoxy resin curing, a forge empty of gas, and lack of sleep. We have developed new knife designs, new production processes, new materials, and a great jump in skills.
