Nothing. Not even a glance. Whatever she was reading was much more interesting than the voice of him, a human being, and while the seeds of curiosity had been sown, his appall at being ignored by a child was stronger still. When you addressed someone younger than you, the correct thing for them to do was to look in your direction, or at least try to clarify if it was actually them you were trying to talk to.
“Hinami. Hinami!”
When it still didn’t work, he felt the throes of desperation creep up into his lungs. If only he knew her surname; maybe tipping the scales of respect between them toward her, thus creating a dynamic that favored something a bit more balanced, would get him what he wanted.
However, he did not do such a thing, nor did he even have the means to do so. And besides, adding fresh throes to the scattered curiosity still made the combined force no match for the juggernaut that was his newfound indignation.
He stood before her so that she could see him.
“Hinami!!”
