Gianpiero Lambiase to leave Oracle Red Bull Racing after Verstappen’s 2030 F1 Exit
15th January 2031
Early today Red Bull Racing announced that Gianpiero Lambiase would be leaving the team after 15 years. The same amount of time that Driver Max Verstappen has been at the team.
Lambiase worked with driver Daniil Kvyat and maintained his position within the team when Verstappen went to replace Kvyat in 2015. In 2022, Lambiase took over as Head of Race Engineering from Guillaume Roqueline for Red Bull,  while also retaining his role as race engineer to Verstappen.
Both Verstappen and Lambiase sat down with Red Bull’s Talking Bulls podcast after the start of the winter break. Verstappen giving his final goodbyes to the F1 team and Lambiase to let people know that he would be leaving to be Verstappen’s enginner in the coming WEC season.
“Max told me that he was planning on doing Word Endurance next year (2031), and he asked me if I would be interested in working with him and his team.”
“I wouldn’t let him say no,” Verstappen interjected.
Lambiase just laughed, “Yes, so with that I want to announce that I’ll be leaving the team to be able to work with Max as he moves into World Endurance.”
This poses the question of what Red Bull will do now with both the loss of Verstappen and Lambiase from the team. How will Horner fill in the role of both a top driver and a race engineer leaving the team in the same year?

📍Nürburgring Nürburg, Germany - Hour 6
Today was supposed to be an exciting day. It was Max’s first 24 hour endurance race at Nürburgring. The infamous Nordschleife was a staple when it came to racing endurance. At least that was what Max had told her.
Hour 6 of the race had just started and before she knew it, Max was in the car driving like any other race and then she heard an announcement about a collision between two cars show up on the screen. It looked like Max’s car, and it had barreled over three times before landing flat, hood up. A moment later marshals showed up to pull the driver out of the car and it was, Max. He was being pulled out and was leaning over before someone tried to help him stand straight up, but he looked like he couldn’t manage it.
Her eyes fell away from the screen to look at the kids, Nicole reaching for her first, “Mama?”
She had just opened her mouth when she spotted Christian walking towards them.
“What is going on?” She asked.
“Y/N,” he said a little too calmly for her liking. “There was a collision, Max and another driver who was driving for Porsche. The guy in the Porsche was breaking too early and collided with Max, they both went into the wall but Max’s car flipped a few times. We’re lucky that neither of them hurt anyone else. Max is being driven to the hospital as we speak.”
She could feel her stomach drop and then start to feel heavy. She needed to leave, she couldn’t be here. “I… I need to go to the hospital.” The kids. “Can you and Geri watch the kids? Until I find out if he’s okay?”
Christian just nodded. “Of course, Y/N. We’ll get someone to drive you and call me when you find out how he’s doing.”
She gave Christian a small nod back as a reply.
“Kids,” She calls them over, Nicole slipping her hand into Y/N’s. “I’m going to go to the hospital to check on Papa. You’re going to stay with Grandma and Grandpa, okay?”
“Mum,” She hears Nico say. “Is Dad going to be okay?”
“I don’t know, but I’ll find out when I go to the hospital.”
“Mum, it looked bad-” Nico started to say.
“Don’t watch the footage yet, okay. Let me check on him first,” Y/N reached for Nico and kissed his forehead and then pulled the younger kids in for a hug.
“Be good for Grandma and Grandpa.”She said, she walked Nicole over to Geri, and Geri took the little girls hand before Y/N moved to leave the track and was led to a car by Max’s trainer who insisted on going with her to the hospital. It was hard to sit in the car, in the defining silence with neither her or Rupert talking as he drove.
Her phone flashed with a notification text from a few people:
Sophie Daniel Victoria Lando Charles
She didn’t open any of their messages, just pushed the notifications away to a photo of her and Max. He had been in his new team Verstappen race suit on his first day of testing for the year. She normally didn’t go with him so he could concentrate on work but she couldn’t shake the feeling like she needed to be there this time.
Lulham had taken their picture, Max was standing behind her smiling after Chris had made a joke to get Max to smile. Max had pulled her tightly into his chest and then buried his head into her shoulder before saying, “Okay, enough. Anymore of this and we will all be old by the time a good picture is taken.”
She had kissed Max on the cheek and then let him go. “Have fun,” and then mouthed the words I love you.
She left Max and Chris so they could get ready to get into their cars and walked by GP and said to him, “Keep Max in one piece.”
The Brit replied, “You know I will, Y/N. I’ll take care of him while he’s out there.”
She gave him a nod moving further into the garage and sat out of the way of the engineers and mechanics.
“You know he’ll be okay.” Rupert said as they got closer to the hospital.
“You mean now or eventually?” She had asked him. Not every driver made it out of accidents unscathed. She couldn’t think of there possibly being something truly wrong with Max.
Rupert said nothing the rest of the drive. Her leg started to shake for a bit before Rupert finally pulled up to the hospital. She had the self-restraint to let Rupert park the car before walking into the hospital and going to the reception desk to ask about Max.
She walked up to the information desk before an older woman who was about Sophie’s age looked at her. “Can I help you?” The woman had asked.
“Yes, my husband was just brought in… He was in an… accident.” She paused at the word, having to use a word that was unfamiliar to the German that she would occasionally hear.
“What’s his name?” She quickly switched to English, probably noticing that she was struggling with her words a little.
“Max Verstappen.” She said and then started to turn her wedding and engagement ring around her ring finger with her thumb.
The nurse's eyes went wide when hearing Max’s name. “Right,” The nurse said and reached for something on the desk. “I’ll make a call and ask. Do you want me to get you anything, Mrs. Verstappen?”
Y/N just shook her head no. “I just need to know that he’s okay.”
“Of course,” She said with a nod and then pulled up the phone to her ear. “Yes, trauma ward? Was there a man in his early to mid 30s just brought in?”
Y/N waited with baited breath to hear what she had to say.
“Yes, he’s in… they’re doing a CT scan. Yes, I know who he is. I’m looking at his wife right now… Okay I’ll let her know.” She had put the phone down. “He’s on the third floor, use those elevators,” she said pointing to her left. “Click three and then take a right until you reach the doors that say trauma ward. They’re still running some tests but there will be a doctor to greet you once they’re finished up with him.”
“Thank you,” Y/N said quickly before following the nurses instructions and went up to the third floor. The sign up ahead that read trauma ward made her feel a little lightheaded. She managed to find a seat just outside of the set of double doors and pulled out her phone to text Rupert where she was.
Eventually Rupert joined her sitting to her left side on the phone with someone from the team. “Yeah we’re still waiting on news… They seem to be taking their time.”
She really should have talked to Victoria or Sophie but she didn’t have any news about how Max was doing and didn’t want to call them without knowing if he was going to be alright.
“Family of Max Verstappen?” A soft voice said. Y/N looked up to see a young woman in a set of scrubs and a lab coat holding a metal-like folder.
Y/N moved from her seat, “I’m his wife.”
The female doctor moved closer to her, “And this is…” slightly pointing at Rupert.
“His trainer.”
“Ah, this will make it easier then. You showed up right as we were taking Mr. Verstappen to get his CT-scan.”
“Head injury?” Rupert asked.
“Mild concussion, he should be okay in a week or two. However, after they pulled him from the car he seemed to be nursing his ribs, we did an x-ray and there is some bruising on his upper ribs which will take a few weeks to heal.”
“And besides that?” Y/N asked.
“We don’t know, we’ve given him some pain medication and he’s asleep for now. He should wake up in a few hours. But he’ll be fine after his injuries heal.”
Rupert nodded and then Y/N followed in suit. “He’s on the second floor, I’ll take you to his room so you can see him.”
Her and Rupert followed the doctor to the floor below before being taken to a white door. Y/N looked into the room to see Max’s asleep, his eyes closed and on his back.
“Can I ask you a few more questions about what I’ll need to get ready for him in the coming weeks?” Rupert asked the doctor.
“Sure,” The doctor had said leaving her outside of Max’s hospital room.
She slowly opened the door moving to his side, she had pulled up the chair that was resting against the far wall before reaching for Max’s limp hand. The only comfort she had was the sound of the heart monitor in the background giving off a steady deep, deep, deep.
She gripped his hand in her’s giving it a small squeeze before hearing, “Uhh.”
Max’s voice made the sound of the heart monitor in the room diminish.
“Hey, hey.” She said trying to meet his eyes noticing a small cut by his left eyebrow and his cheek had a small bruise.
He looked around the room for a moment, his fingers clasped around her hand in a vice.
“Max, Maxy,” She kept saying before his eyes finally landed on her. She saw his pupils diminish at a scary rate.
“Mijn…” He started to speak taking in a deep breath.
He moved his head up very slowly.
“Don’t move to much, Rupert is going to be back in a few. He’s talking to the doctor.” She said. She saw that Max was trying to nod but that he was struggling.
It was hard to watch him like this. A few tears fell and she felt his hand grip her’s. She let out a shaky breath.
“I’m so happy that you’re okay. I saw the replay of the car flip-” She didn’t bother finishing her sentence as Max’s eyes met her’s. He reached his hand up a little brushing the tears that were now staining her cheek away.
“How bad?” He asked.
“It looks worse from the drone view.” She started to say before she heard the door open to see Rupert and the doctor come through the door.
“Well look who’s awake,” The doctor said. “Any pain Max? In your neck or eyes?”
“A bit in my neck,” Max slowly answered with his words slightly slurring.
“Worse then 2021?” Rupert asked.
Max slowly shook his head. “Not like that, more like it’s sore.”
The doctor nodded, “That’s good that it isn’t like your last accident.”
The doctor looked down at the folder in her hands, “Well since your wife and trainer are here, I can tell you that your concussion isn’t severe. Stay away from looking at a screen for a week or two. Your ribs are also bruised, so you can’t have to much exercise, so light walking to start with. Your ribs should take six weeks to heal. I’ll recommend you a doctor for when you go home and they can take another look and see how things are going.”
Max mostly starred at the doctor before glancing at Rupert. She knew what Max was thinking, he did all the work over the last few months only for this to happen. He couldn’t race 24 Hours of Le Mans with his injury now.
“I know Max,” Rupert said looking at him. “Get some rest, your kids will be by in a bit. We’ll talk about the rest later.”
Max dropped his head and then peaked up at her through his lashes, as if he was ashamed of something. Rupert walked out of the room after gesturing to his phone and left them alone.
“Max,” She reached up to cup his cheek. “Do you want me to leave you in here. I need to call Sophie and then check in to see if Christian has already left the track with the kids.”
He just shook his head no, dropped his head back to his pillow and then slowly closed his eyes.
“Okay, I’m going to call her first. Can I put her on speaker?”
Max nodded, “If it’s too much for you, just squeeze my hand.”
Max said nothing before Y/N pulled away from him a little to dial Sophie’s number. The dial tone rang for a few seconds before she heard the familiar voice of her mother-in-law, “Y/N?”
“Sophie?” She asked back.
“Are you still at the track? Do you have news about our boy?” Max’s eyes met hers.
“I’m at the hospital with him, he’s awake, has some pretty bad bruises and a concussion, other than that he seems okay.”
Y/N could hear a little commotion from the phone and Sophie’s voice talking to someone.
“Y/N,” Victoria’s voice came through next.
“Yeah, still here.” She said looking at Max’s peaceful face.
“Are the kids with you?” She asked.
“No they’re with Geri and Christian, but they’ll be at the hospital soon.”
“Great, just gives you the opportunity to do what Max hates most,” Y/N couldn’t help but let out a light chuckle, Max did hate being fussed over. “If I were on the track I would have made Arvidson pay.”
Y/N held Max’s gaze and saw a small smile start to spread over Max’s lips. She leaned in a little closer and kissed the back of Max’s hand, his wedding ring was missing. Probably still with Rupert, she thought.
“Victoria!” She heard Sophie yell through the phone. “You should not say these things!”
“Mum!” The rest of what Victoria said seemed to be inaudible for a few moments.
“Victoria, it’s okay. Max can hear you,” She said to stop Sophie and Victoria from continuing their conversation.
“See, she understands.” Y/N heard Victoria say.
Y/N just shook her head. Was it odd for Y/N to hope that her and Nicole could one day have a relationship like this when her daughter was older?
“Should we come by when Max is a little more awake? I know he’ll be out of it still but-” Sophie didn’t get a chance to finish her sentence.
“Yeah, maybe after the kids get here. I’m not sure if you all can stay and I don’t want to just dump them on you.”
“You are never dumping my grandchildren on me.”
Y/N dropped her eyes to Max’s lap feeling guilty for a moment. She knew that Sophie didn’t see it that way. She just needed to focus on Max right now.
“I know,” She quickly. “I know, I just don’t want you to have to fly out. We’re hoping that the doctor will let us know when Max can go home so you don’t have to fly out here.” She felt Max give her hand a firm squeeze.
“Well keep us posted. And tell Max we love him.”
“Yeah, I will.” She said after ending the call and looking up at Max, pulling her phone away from the bed and open up her phone contacts.
“I…” She says and moves to get out of her chair. “I still need to call Christian.”
“Mijn leeuwin,” He said stopping her from moving. “Can calling him wait?”
She nods at him and then looks at her phone to see that Christian had already texted her.
“Christian and Geri are on the way with the kids,” She said laying her phone screen down. “I’ll text him in a minute. He sends his best.”
“I know what you are doing.” Is all Max has to say for her to take a deep breath and calm down a little.
She ends up text Christian back a few moments later,
It took almost an hour for Christian and Geri to get here. They walked into the room first with the kids following after them.
“Dad,” Nico said as he saw Max lying in the bed.
“Papa,” Niki said moving towards Max and reached to hug him. Max let out a small groan as Niki tightened his arms around Max.
Nicole went over to her and moved to try to sit in her lap, Y/N pulled her further into her lap. Nik reached over and gave Max a loose hug.
“I saw the crash,” Nico said after Nik had pulled away from Max.
Max and Y/N looked up at Christian, “I tried to stop him from watching it. He wouldn’t listen.”
Nicole buried her head into Y/N’s shoulder, and let out a tiny sob.
“Nicole,” Max said, reaching for her little hand.
“Baby,” Y/N said, “Do you want to give Papa a hug?”
Nicole shook her head no. “Don’t want to hurt Papa.”
Y/N picked Nicole up and set her on the bed next to Max waiting to see if she would reach over and hug him.
“Schat,” Max said slightly opening his arms for her. “Please.”
Nicole relented at Max’s plea and reached her little arms around his neck to hug him. Y/N could tell that she wasn’t hugging him with her normal strength, being extra careful.
It took a moment but Y/N could hear Nicole start to fully cry. Max’s hand went to Nicole’s head gently stroking her hair, “I’m okay, schatje. I’ll be fine.” he said doing his best to comfort her.
“It looked worse then it was,” Christian chined in.
The crash did look pretty bad, the Porsche driver had clipped Max’s front bumper and it sent him spiraling three times over into the barricade, Max was lucky that the car didn’t end up landing on it’s hood but still right side up.
“There is already an investigation going on, should hear back in a day or two.” He continued.
Max just looked up from Nicole and gave him a small nod. This could all be talked about later.
“What happened to the other driver?” Nico asked.
“According to the marshals that were at the sight of the crash, he was fine. Turned a little awkwardly and ended up loosing one of his rear tires but got out of the car without a scratch.”
That just seemed unfair, the guy had clipped Max’s front bumper causing Max to have a concussion and bruised ribs and he got to walk away without a single scratch on him.
It took a few more minutes for Nicole to settle down. Her head was now resting on Max’s lap having exhausted herself from crying. One of the nurses had pulled another chair into Max’s room, Niki and Nik did their best to both occupy the chair. Nico was now in Y/N’s seat at Max’s side, talking his ear off about something that she wasn’t paying attention to.
“When can he go home?” Y/N asked the doctor as they stood outside of Max’s hospital room.
“I would say tomorrow, we want to keep him overnight for some more observation but we’ll do another check in the morning and if we like what we see he’ll be able to go home.”
Y/N nodded at her, “And your sure that his concussion won’t get worse? I know that he had one before and it took several months to heal.”
The doctor pulled her away from Max’s door a little more. “From what Mr. Manwarning told me, the force of this crash isn’t nearly as bad as the one in 2021. It’s still a concern, not because of the amount of force he experienced but that the car flipped so many times. I know that your husband had some issues with his sight but since he won’t be racing while his ribs heal, his concussion should go away much faster than before.”
Y/N was quick to nod at the doctor and thanked her. She turned back towards Max’s room looking in on her family. She doesn’t know what she would have done if Max’s injuries were significantly more severe.
Tumblr media
Three weeks later 📍Sint-Genesius-Rode, Belgium
“I know you think your fine Max, but you heard the doctor. Your ribs aren’t healed enough for you to get into that car.” She said to him as they stood in the living room of the house after getting back from Max’s doctor’s appointment.
“I will be fine,” He insisted.
“I don’t care if you will be fine.” She said taking in a short breath. “I… I can’t raise 4 children by myself Max. It’s not fair to them and it’s not fair to me when you can be here instead of possibly getting into another accident when you’re still injured.” She says moving closer to him.
“It’s not my fault that Arvidson crashed into me, I didn’t ask for this to happen.” He insists.
“I know that, but please Max. Can’t you wait to do Le Mans next year, just until your ribs are fully healed?” She pleads as she stands close to him.
“No! I am perfectly able to drive, I don’t care that my ribs aren’t all the way healed.”
Max didn’t feel like telling her that she was right, his ribs didn’t feel the best and his eyes were giving him small problems when he had tried driving on the sim this past week. It was hard to sit in the sim for more than two hours without feeling like he was in pain. Rupert told him that he was making good progress but still needed a bit more time.
Le Mans was less than three weeks away, if he was going to pull out and have someone replace him, it would need to be now, and he would need to tell the team in the next few days. He couldn’t keep them waiting for updates on if he could race or not.
He could hear her footsteps retreating from the room as she said nothing. He heard her bag and keys being pick up.
“Where are you going?” He asked slowly walking towards the entry way of the house.
“To talk to your mother, she seems like the only person in this family who has any sense about getting injured and not racing.” She said, her eyes brimmed with tears before grabbing the door handle of the front door and shutting it behind her.
He just shook his head at where she was standing and slowly moved back into the living room. He was cleared to look at a screen a week ago and he could play video games since the kids where in school. He could call Raymond and ask about how Thierry was doing in GT3, if they were having problems and needed help. Could he even handle driving in a GT3 car?
If I can’t drive in a GT3 car, how are I going to drive in a LMP2 car? He thought. At least three, three hours stints over 24 hours. I should be fine.
He keeps telling himself that, I should be fine. I will be fine.
It takes three hours before his phone goes off. The kids need to be picked up in an hour, Nicole and Nik from daycare, and the older boys from primary school. He check the caller ID;
MUM
He was expecting Y/N to call him instead. Why is his mum calling him?
He swipes to answer, “Hi Mum?” He says.
“Max.” She answers, and he already doesn’t like the sound of her voice. “I just wanted to call and let you know that Y/N and I talked. She told me your still going to compete at Le Mans even though your still injured.”
He let out a heavy breath. Was this his mother’s way of scolding him since she didn’t have many opportunities to do it while he was a child?
“She doesn’t understand,” He started to say.
“She doesn’t have to, she’s your wife.” He knows that his mother is going to take her side of this argument even if she understands what racing is like. “Being married is a partnership, like you have with GP when you are in the car. She is looking out for you now because she knows if she doesn’t, there is a chance that you can hurt yourself or someone else.”
He can’t help but slightly stare off at the cream walls of the living room, “Your wife is tough, we all know it. You even say it every time you call her that obnoxious pet name.”
Mijn Leeuwin
It had been the perfect moniker to give her, she was a protective lioness, his wife. He knew this when he married her. He knew this when she had adopted Nico as her own. He just never felt like this extended to him… It had never felt like it had been about him before.
“How would you feel Max if she got hurt and you knew that you could have done something to stop it?” She asked.
“I-” He tried to speak. He could only swallow down what felt like a rock stuck in his throat. That had almost happened when Nicole was born. Why did that one nurse not want to listening to him?
“She’s trying not to lose you Max.” She said and he could hear her breath out into the receiver. “Racing is dangerous, she doesn’t want to lose you and make my grandchildren lose their father in the process.”
“Mum,” He starts to say. “I… Rupert has been telling me that I’ve been healing well.” Is all he can manage to say.
She lets out a sigh. “I know what Rupert has been saying, but do you think that you’ll be able to sit in the car and race?”
He starts to let his shoulder slump forward. “I… I don’t know.” He says, and then cave in a bit at his confession.
“There is nothing wrong with not doing this race Max.” She says. “You can always do Le Mans next year when you aren’t injured.” His mother’s words are kinder then Y/N’s question from this earlier in the day, but there is no tone of pleading. She isn’t trying to talk him out of this.
He knows that she’s trying to tell him that it’ll be better in the long run, more time to heal, more time to practice, every other possible endurance race to enter if his injuries heal in another 6 weeks. Another chance at 24 hours of Nürburgring next year with Arvidson out of the way.
“I’ll call the team and talk to them, see what they say,” He knows what the team will say. If your still injured and it’s still that bad we’ll get another driver to race. Lulham, Thierry. We’ll figure it out, just get better Max. He doesn’t like disappointing people. He doesn’t…
Max doesn’t want to put this off anymore, he wants to race Le Mans. It’s the last thing before he knows that he’s accomplished all that he wants to for the time being. Because he knows that there will always be another category to race in, another challenge, but this has been the one thing he has been chasing since he won his fourth World Drivers Championship in F1. It feels like the last hurdle. Race Le Mans, podium at Le Mans, win Le Mans. No one else but him, his team, and the car. The way it should be. No other noise but the engine in his ears. It’s all he can ask for.
And right now it’s too much to ask for with his injury in the way.
“Can you ask Y/N to come home?” He asks his mother.
“Of course, Max. I’ll ask her, she’s just about to pick up the kids, so you’ll see her soon.”
Max closed his eyes at her words. He was hoping that he would get to talk to her before the kids needed to be picked up.
“Can you tell her that… that I love her.” He waits in utter silence for his mother to say something.
“She knows Max.” Sophie says to him. He knows that Y/N heard him. Now, he just needs to wait for her to get home. So they can talk about this.
It had been easy to sit for those three hours earlier, now it feels like time is passing by too slow. He keeps checking the time on his Rolex and rotating his wedding ring around his finger, looking at the way that the blue and black weaved carbon fiber mixed with the titanium outer-band. He hasn’t taken it off since Rupert had given it back to him when he was still in the hospital.
He can hear the sound of tires pulling into the driveway and keeps sitting on the couch waiting for everyone to come inside.
The sound of the door opens and then feet pile into the tile flooring of the entry way of the house. He hears bags being drop and shoes falling.
“I’m going to start dinner.” Y/N says slipping her shoes off.
She only spares him a glance as she walks to the kitchen. She’s avoiding him, avoiding what she thinks will be an argument. She is obviously sick of fighting with him about this.
The kids make their way into the living room with a chorus of greetings and half hugs knowing that he’s still not all the way healed.
“Are you mad at Papa?” Nicole asked as they were sitting at the table in the kitchen for dinner. Nico looked over at her with Niki and Nik sharing a glance.
Max’s eyes went wide at Nicole’s question.
“I’m not mad at Papa, I’m just worried that Papa’s still injured.” Y/N answers with her fork falling into her plate.
“Can’t you just kiss it better?” She asked sweetly.
“No sweetie, I can’t.” There was no way for Y/N to kiss his ribs and make them heal faster.
“But you can when I get scrapes on my knees.” Unfortunately Nicole’s bumps and bruises from running around the backyard weren’t the same as his fractured ribs.
“I know, but Papa’s injury is more severe. His body is still healing, but he’ll be okay.” Y/N glances at him through her lashes. He can see what she’s trying to say. See, I can’t do this on my own. I can’t do this without you.
Max can feel a knot growing in his stomach.
“What’s severe?” Nik asked while pushing his vegetables around the plate.
“It means that something is very serious and shouldn’t be taken lightly.” She does her best to explain.
The rest of dinner is quiet aside from forks and knives hitting plates.
“Does that mean that you’ll both still tuck me in for bed?” Nicole speaks up while clearing off the last of her carrots but only after they’ve been dipped in ranch dressing.
“Of course,” He answers. “Mama and I will still tuck you in.” He can already tell that Nicole is going to try to climb into bed with them at some point tonight.
Max is able to clear all of the plates off the table while the kids went to play before bed. He could mange to walk everything over to the sink but as soon as he starts to reach down to load the dishwasher he can feel an odd twinge coming from his injury. Rupert had said that the unexpected twinges of pain would go away in the next few days.
He can hear Y/N’s house slippers against the Italian marble flooring.
“Go sit on the couch, I’ll finish cleaning up.” She moves to stand at his side with her hand already reaching into the sink, her manicured fingers sinking into the food grimed water.
He nods but doesn’t want to. She cooked so he was supposed to clean after. He was finally feeling up to it instead of just letting her take care of it like she had been since he had come home from Germany.
“I-” He tires to say. I should be the one taking care of this, not you. He wants to say. “I’m going to call the team tomorrow, let them know that I’m not doing Le Mans this year.”
Max can hear the clatter of utensils in the sink. He can feel her eyes on him and then hears her feet getting closer to him.
“Don’t do this for me,” She says. “Don’t tell me what I want to hear.”
What? He thinks, A few hours ago you wanted me to not do La Mans. Now you are okay with me racing injured?
“I don’t understand you.” He says shaking his head. “You wanted me not to race injured, now I said that I’m not.”
She takes a breath, “Exactly Max, because I asked you not to. Not because you know that it’s the wrong thing to do.”
Well she wasn’t entirely wrong. Yes, she was asking him not to race and he wasn’t going to after talking with his mum.
“It’s not wrong though. I know once I am in the car I will be fine. I will have the team looking out for me. I’m a race car driver Y/N, it’s who I am.”
“And I love that you are who you are Max, but sometimes I think that you have no concern for your own safety and it terrifies me.”
He wants to roll his eyes but knows that will only make her more upset.
“Well I won’t be racing forever.” He starts to say looking away from her. “It’s one last race. Who cares if I do it injured.”
“I do,” She says with a slight sob escaping from her lips. “I care Max.”
He closes his eyes, he immediately knows that was the wrong thing to say to her.
He takes a few steps closer to her and is careful about taking her into his arms, partially because of his ribs and also because he’s not sure is she wants him to touch her right now.
Her sobs slowly turn to full on crying. He pulls her from the kitchen and into the backyard of the house so they can sit at the bench by the pool. He doesn’t want the kids to see her this upset. He knows that it’s his fault, that he can’t let this go. She sits in his lap and he does his best not to flinch as she puts pressure on his ribs with her arms around his neck.
The only thing he feels like he can do is wait for her to stop crying, so he at least can explain to her why he feels like he needs to do this now. It breaks his heart to hear her cry. That she is this concerned with his health that it leads her to tears.
He can remember one of the first conversations that they had when he first thought about proposing. That if they were to get married, this would be it. Divorce was never an option. She didn’t believe in it and he didn’t want to put Nico through loosing a mother for a second time, even if he never knew it.
“I won’t race at Le Mans in the next couple weeks.” He starts muttering into her hair. “I’ll call the team and let them know that I’m too injured to race.” He can’t help but stumble a little with his words. He doesn’t want to say them. He doesn’t want to just give up and not push through this like he has been taught to since the first time that Jos had put him in a kart. It’s not who he is as a driver, but… when it comes to his family, and his wife. He has to put them first.
This is just one battle that he can’t win right now.
His words seem to make her crying dissipate. She hasn’t pulled away from him yet with her head still buried in his shoulder.
“Mijn,” He starts again. “Mijn liefde, please. I just need you to know that once I do this. Once I race at Le Mans,” Whenever that it, he thinks. “that will be it. I’ll be done racing until the kids are older.”
It’s hard to say those words and admit it to her. It’s hard to let go and know that Le Mans will be the end, for now. There will always be another category for him to compete in but while the kids are still growing up he can focus on them and Verstappen.com.
He can finally feel her pull away from him and tries to meet her eyes. They’re red rimmed from crying and he feels his heart grow heavy in milliseconds. He ignores that the pressure she was putting on his ribs has gone away.
“What do you mean, you’ll be done?” She croakes out.
“I of course mean no more travel unless I’m taking Nico to races or Verstappen.com needs me for something. I’ll be home a lot more.” He clarifies for her.
“Max,” She starts to say and reaches to cup his face in her hands. He looks into her eyes and can read every question that she has for him in them. The why nows? And What about the other races you’ve wanted to do? These are questions he wouldn’t mind answering. He just doesn’t want to answer the question of, Will doing this now actually be how you want this to go?
“This is why I want to do this now. I do this now, I can start to be at home more.”
“I thought that you wanted to have a real chance at winning? Not just be able to partake in the race?”
“I do-” He sighs.
“Then wait a year. Just… wait a year Max. If you want to do this, race at Le Mans and have a chance to win, do it next yeat.”
He hears her move to sit up on the bench a little more. “You know I would never ask you to give up racing Max. I just, your not invincible and I just want to make sure that if you do go and race, you won’t be injured and can do your best.”
He lets out a small huff through his nose and then drops his head to her shoulder. “If I were to race now, I don’t think I could stay in the car for more then one stint.” He admits. “I can’t disappoint them.”
He feels her arms around his shoulder and her fingers sinking into his hair.
“You won’t,” Petting his hair and moving back as she gestures for him to put his head in her lap. He lets his head fall back, “Putting your health first doesn’t make you a disappointment Max. No matter what anyone says.”
They just sit there for a while letting the air settle around them. By the time they managed to make it into the house it had grow dark outside, neither of them seemed to notice.
Walking back into the house feels like it takes so much effort. There is still noise coming from the TV, and Max peaks into the kitchen to see the sink still full with dishes.
He looks at his watch and sees that it reads 8:34, too late for most of the kids to still be up.
He has to force his hand to let go of Y/N’s so he can look into the living room and see that Nicole has her head pressed into a throw pillow, Nico still up with a video game controller in his hands. Niki and Nik were busy with their lego sets.
Y/N clears her throat, “Time for bed.”
“But Mum, it’s Friday.” Nico says. “Can we stay up a little longer?”
Max knows that Y/N wants to say no, to just tell them to go to bed so that so can they and start tomorrow with a clear head.
“You can stay up for another hour.” He answers for her. “But bed right after. I mean it Nico, I want you off that Playstation because we still have to go to the track tomorrow.”
Just because he can’t race doesn’t mean that Nico doesn’t have practice tomorrow.
“8 am?” Nico asks.
Max just nods at him and then walks into the room and is careful about lifting Nicole so he can take her up to bed.
Y/N opens her arms to take Nicole from him but he just shakes his head. Y/N walks with Niki and Nik so they can go to bed, they should have been in bed at 8. Max takes his time on the stairs as he holds Nicole, they both meet up at Nicole’s room and he places her into her bed, Y/N pulling out her pajamas while he pulls back the pink sheets. Y/N changes her and he reaches for one of her many stuffed animals and then place a little stuffed grey cat into his daughters waiting arms before they both tuck her into her sheets.
Max kisses her on her forehead and Y/N follows suit before they both see Nicole nuzzle into her pillow to tired to wake up. Y/N moves out of the room first already reaching to turn off the light switch and all Max can do is look at his daughter and see his wife in her. Her hair spread out over her pillow, and he knows if he saw his own eyes looking back at him once he had come into the house he would have sworn to never step foot into another race car again.
Max lays his hand over Y/N’s on the light switch and then both press it at the same time leaving the door wide open before walking to the main hallway making their way to the owners wing of the house.
They go about their nightly routine, changing out of clothes and putting them in the laundry. They brush their teeth in front of the sink standing next to one another, Max reaching for the cream that has slowly been helping the visible bruises on his ribs go away. He sees her in one moment and then she’s gone the next. He closes his eyes and tries to hear her footsteps against the wood flooring. She’s already moving to get into bed.
He puts the cap back on the container and slowly walks into the bedroom. The light on her nightstand is the only things illuminating the room, her hair falling around her face, her eyes a little clearer but obviously still very tired.
He climbed under the sheets, she turns the light off, and he pulls her into his chest before taking a deep breath with the scent of her shampoo making it easy for his eyes to grow heavy.
This is home. With Nicole asleep down the hall, Nico still playing video games. Niki and Nik asleep upstairs.
She pulls away from him and then turns on her side.
“Turn over.” She mutters. Max looks at her for a second wondering why. She lays her hand over his shoulder as if she wants to push him onto his chest and then slowly rolls on his side before she moves closer to him, her arm lightly over his waist and then he can feel her pressing her face into the back of his neck. She’s doing this because she felt him flinch earlier when they were outside. Because she knows that if he ends up holding her it will only cause him more pain.
It takes a while for Max to feel like he can close his eyes and fall asleep until he hears light footsteps coming down the hall and then heard the door of the master bedroom creak open. He opens one eye to see Nicole in her pink pajamas with her little grey cat spilling over her little arms.
“Papa?” She asks standing by his side of the bed. He already knows what she’s going to ask and pulls the sheets back for her to climb into their bed. He does his best to pick her up as their bed is quiet high off the gowned and tucks her into their sheets.
She curls up at his side and places her head against his arm. He lets a breath out as he does his best to hold his girls. He closes his eyes one more time and tries to let sleep take him.

The day before 24 Hours of Le Mans June 13th, 2031
Max had just gotten off the phone with Lully, he was already in France for the race. He sounded excited for tomorrow when there was the ring of the doorbell.
“Hey Chris, give me a second.” He said into the phone. He opened the door for the mail guy to be holding a large box and looked to read who the return address was from;
Harry Winston 29 Av. Montaigne, 75008, Paris France
He realized what was in the box. His apology gift to Y/N.
“Thanks.” He said to mail guy and signed for the package.
He brought the box into the house and then went up to the second floor to put it into the master closet. He would give it to her after she was done with work.
The kids were with his Mum for the weekend.
“I’m back.” He said into the phone.
“Yeah mate, the track looks great.” Chris said. “Still sucks that you won’t be able to race with us this weekend.”
“Less pressure for you and Therry,” He sighed with a half-smile. “There is always next year, and it lets me know how competitive we are right now.”
“You make a good point,” Chris paused. “I’m being called over by the one of the engineers, I got to go Max.”
“Of course Chris,” Max moved to walk into the backyard. “Have a good race. I’ll be watching tomorrow.”
“Sure, talk to you later mate.”
“Bye.” Max pulled the phone away from his ear and let out a deep sigh.
He wanted to be in France but his last appointment with his doctor was this morning and he found out that everything was going well and his injuries were almost fully healed, another week and he could go back to a normal routine again.
The doctor had mentioned that his recover time was taking a little longer then it should but Max wasn’t having issues leaning down and had stopped flinching from pain a little over two weeks ago.
He should be fully cleared to race just in time for 6 Hours of São Paulo in a month.
Max looked down at his watch and saw that he needed to still order dinner. Even after all of these years living in a house with children he was still horrible in the kitchen and didn’t want to put Y/N through one of his cooking disasters.
He opened up his phone and called a restaurant in the city that he knew would be willing to deliver to the house before walking back downstairs to set the table and pull out a bottle of wine for them to drink. He still preferred a gin and tonic or a beer but he was willing to drink a glass of wine every once in a while.
He had gone to the master bathroom afterwards, took a quick shower and trimmed his beard that he had forgone taking care of after his accident. He cut it short enough that it was a little longer then his usual 2 day stubble and then left if before reaching for a barely used bottle of Bulgari cologne.
Max was just about to step out of the bathroom when the door opened to Y/N pulling her hair out of an updo, she was out of her at home sweats in a thin silk robe.
“I was going to offer to join you,” She said with a small wicked smile.
“Not fast enough,” He replied. “I have to let the delivery guy in.”
He moved to take a sidestep so she could enter the bathroom.
“I’ll meet you down there,” She hollered as he left her standing there. Max moved into their closet, quickly peaked into the drawer where his t-shirts were to see the unpackaged Harry Winston box still in place.
He took out a small knife that he had been gifted the father’s day before last and cut open the outer white box before revealing a navy blue velvet box. He slipped it back into the drawer, left the white box by the stairs to take with him when he went back downstairs and then put on a pair of loose casual pants and a thin knit sweater.
He put his feet into a pair of slippers and then took the box with him as he felt his phone vibrate in the pocket of his pants. He pulled it out to see the familiar Belgian area code and picked it up.
He heard the voice of the delivery driver telling him that he would meet him at the gate to collect the food. Grabbing his keys after placing the phone down, Max moved to throw the box into the recycling bin. He opened the side door to the food delivery driver and paid him before walking back into the house with his food order in tow.
He made the short trek past the garage laying out the food on the table between the pool and paddle court. Y/N came down to join him a few minuets later in a short red summer dress, short black heels. In her right hand, she carried the bottle of wine her husband mistakenly left in the kitchen. The stems of two wine glasses dangled downward in between the fingers of other hand.
They sat through their dinner eating, drinking with a comfortable casual small talk throughout the night. Their plates were clear and half the bottle of wine gone when he pulled her from her chair and into his arms so they could dance.
The night had grown dark a while ago, the outdoor lights by the pool illuminating their every step.
“You know, sometimes I forget that you can dance.” She said to him.
He stepped away to turn her and then felt her hand on his shoulder again. “Only sometimes?” He asked. She nodded back at him.
“When was the last time we dance?” He lifted his head as he looked into her eyes.
“The last FIA gala we went to. We definitely only stayed long enough to eat, and for you to accept your award before we went back to the hotel.” She answered.
“I kind of miss it.” He said. He saw her eyebrows go up a little. “Not for what you think. It was nice to go and see you dressed up, and we were on a little vacation without the kids.”
“Well, I can dress up for you anytime. Just ask,” Max let his hands drop a little lower on her waist. “But we both know that a weekend away is hardly a vacation.”
“When was the last time that we went on a vacation with just us?”
“Maybe after Nik was born?” Her voice sounded unsure. “It’s why we went back to Greece after Nicole was born. I remember that much.”
Max’s face twisted in discontent, “That means we haven’t been on a vacation since then.”
“We do have four kids. Can’t exactly drop them off and go gallivant across the world.”
“If we didn’t love them so much we probably would.”
“We would because I would go anywhere with you,” She said and lightly pecked him on the lips. He leans down a little to kiss the crown of her head as pulls her into his chest. He can’t help but let out a heavy breath.
“I… I got you something,” He says and then clears his throat. “It’s upstairs.”
She pulls away a little to look at him. They manage to clear off the table and lock the door to the backyard so the cats don’t get out before he takes her hand leading her upstairs to their closet. He blocks her from seeing the box once their inside of the closet.
“Close your eyes,” He whispers into her ear. He helps her so she’s standing in front of the full length mirror before reaching to unclasp the box, then the necklace and then places it on her neck. The white gold is cold against his fingertips as he tried to do up the clasp and let the heavy necklace sit on her neck. It looks better on her then he could imagine.
“You can open your eyes.” He says as he stands behind her.
She opens her eyes and he can see that they drop down to her neck.
“You got me a similar pair of earrings for Christmas.” She says a little in awe.
He can only nod. The earrings he had bought when he was looking at a birthday gift for her last year. He had always intended to buy her the matching necklace later. He had no desire or intention to let her in on the secret that what she was wearing around her neck was twice the amount he ended up paying for her engagement ring. The sapphire that sat in the middle of the diamond necklace adorned her neck.
“This is my apology gift to you,” He says. “I know that dealing with me since my accident hasn’t been easy and I-”
“Max you don’t have to apologize for me taking care of you,” She says and then drops her hand to the necklace. “And you don’t need to buy me gifts to make up for it.”
She turns around to look up at him and drops her hand from her neck, “I know that I don’t need to but I want to. You have been dealing with me being stubborn about the team and racing.”
He needs to her know how much he appreciates everything that she’s done for him. He feels her slip their hands together and intwine their fingers.
She says as she locks into his eyes, "This is what I signed up for, in sickness and in health remember. That means when your being stubborn and don’t want to listen to me or Rupert.”
He can only lightly chuckle.
“Now take this off me.” She says slightly waving at the clasp. “You are going to return it.”
“No. I’m not.” He says with a smile. She has never turned down an expensive gift that he’s given her and he’s not going to let her start now. She only glares at him before turning to the mirror so he can take it off her.
“You are going to wear it,” He insists. “You’re mine, it’s only right that I get to spoil you every now and then.”
He sees her roll her eyes in the mirror. He carefully undoes the necklace before placing it back in the box.
He closes the lid and then steps closer to her leaning his head down so their lips can collide for a few moments with her hands moving into his hair.
“Come on, we should go to bed.” She says pulling away breathlessly. Max places down at his watch.
“It’s only 10:30,” He says.
“Yes, but aren’t you going to stay up to watch the race tomorrow?” She asks.
He can only nod. He did plan to try to stay up for the full 24 hours to support Chris, Harry, and Therry.
“Well we should both get some shut eye then. Race does start at 3.”
He can only give her a quizzical look. She seems to be aware of what time the race starts and knows that he intends to stay awake for all of it. It only takes a moment for him to realize why.
“You were planning on going with me,” He starts to say. “If I had gone this year, you would have also gone.”
“And I plan to go when you race next year. I’m not just going to sit at home.” It’s all she has to say before she steps a little closer to him, putting her arms around his neck brushing over the short hairs at the back of his neck.
“I love you,” He mutters.
“I know.” She says smiling at him.
He pulls her with him into their room, undressing and then climbing under their sheets. He draws her into him enjoying the feeling of her laying her head down on his chest without the pain of the extra pressure from his ribs.

October, 2029
It had been a quiet night in. Max had been unusually quiet during dinner. Nikita was asking Max questions about helping him put his train set back together since he had found out how to take it apart. Nico ended up changing the subject pulling Niki into talking about the model car sets that he had gotten for his 9th birthday. Nik was sitting in his high chair eating, and you were holding Nicole as she drank from her bottle after eating her way through a packet of rice crackers.
You had helped Max clear the table while Sophie had taken the kids into the family room downstairs to watch a movie. Max was cleaning the dishes, and putting everything into the dishwasher. You had put away the last of the leftovers, and looking back you saw how tense Max's shoulders were.
You walked up behind him, placing one of your hands at his side before pressing yourself up against his back, almost as if his broad shoulders were sheltering you from the outside world.
Max stopped scrubbing at the pan, gripping the sponge in his hand. You pressed your chin into the back of his left shoulder.
“You okay?” You asked.
Max gave what looked like half a nod back before you heard the sponge drop into the sink with an almost audible Splat. He moved to turn around, and moved back only slightly.
“I’ve been thinking about retiring.” He said leaning back against the marble counter. You widened your eyes at his words. You didn’t know that this was on Max’s mind. You knew that he had another year on his contract with Red Bull, you just thought that when Red Bull offered him a new contract you could talk about it then, not now.
“Do you want to retire?” The current season wasn’t over for another month. If he wanted he could call it quits this year, Red Bull would have to take the hit for his contract.
“Maybe after next year.” Max moved his hands down to your sides, pulling you into his chest. His hands, although wet, were warm against the loose shirt that you wore. “They are like family to me. I can’t do that to Christian, or anyone in that garage.”
You would never ask Max to retire. It wasn’t your place. He loved racing and you would never ask him to give it up. You know that Red Bull had become like a family to Max. Christian and Geri were like a second set of parents in a way. Not just when it came to Max, but they were also a set of grandparents to your kids.
“Always, I’ve wanted to do more than just Formula 1. But now, with the kids…” He started to say and then stopped himself dropping his eyes down to the floor. “I also want to be home and spend time with them. Maybe racing in a category with a shorter schedule would be for the best.”
“You could always take time off,” As the words left your mouth, you could see Max’s brows furrow in discontent, quickly lifting his head to meet your eyes. “Not now, but once you want to retire or you feel like you’re ready. Take six months off before jumping into anything new.”
You had to think back to when you had thought about no longer working and staying home with the kids full-time, but ultimately you loved your job and thought you would be setting a better example for your kids in the long run. It was about 4 months after Nik was born. You couldn’t bear the thought of having to leave your kids with a sitter all day even if you had been working from home. Your job still took time away from them. So, you took a few months of letting someone handle a few of your clients, and not long after you found out you were pregnant with Nicole. Sometimes it was hard working with both yours and Max’s schedule but you always managed to find a way to make it work.
“I will be out of shape if I choose to get back into racing after.” You could tell that Max was running the logistics over in his head, weighing the pros and cons of stopping for a while.
“You can always hire a trainer.” There were probably hundreds of trainers who would kill to work with Max to get him into racing shape for whatever he chose to do after Formula 1.
“I don’t know.” He said at first as if he was going to move to hang his head, dropping his chin to his chest. He pulled his head up quickly. “Them, you, mean everything to me.”
Max pulled you into his side, pressing a kiss to your temple. “It is a year away.” He muttered into your hair. “I will figure something out by then.”
“Whatever you want to do Max, we’ll be there.” You couldn’t help but run your fingers over the white gold band of the Rolex that you had gotten him just after Nikita was born. It no longer had three birthdays engraved on it but five now.

NEWS
Eight-time champion Max Verstappen to retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2030 season
F1 Corresponder & Journalist D'Angelo Markus
14th August, 2030
It was announced earlier today that after the end of the 2030 season, Max Verstappen would not be coming back in 2031 with a new contract from Red Bull.
The Dutchman, who made his debut with Scuderia AlphaTauri at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix. Verstappen was the youngest driver to ever make an F1 debut at the age of 17,  a record that he will now forever hold as the FIA had changed that particular rule because of him.
Verstappen won all eight of his championships with Red Bull, four from 2021-2024 and the remaining four from 2026-2029 and is first on the all-time list of Grand Prix winners with 115 victories.
WATCH: Max Verstappen’s 10 Best Overtakes
Verstappen had a few tough years when he was first called up to Red Bull resulting in various engine failures. With the regulation changes, Red Bull and Max were able to capitalize on them pulling out various championship wins with Max at the helm season after season.
Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, Verstappen - who races alongside Isack Hadjar - announced that this would be his 15th and final season in Formula 1.
“My championship runs were very different from one another. The first four were in no way easy despite what 2023 looked like. There were constant obstacles from not just outside people but the team as well.” Verstappen said. “The last four were very different as my family was growing as the championships were happening. The team always had my back and year after year were able to give me the best possible car to compete with.”
“I wish them all the best in for the coming season. Being able to work with Adrian [Newey] when he was here, Christian [Horner], Helmut [Marco] who believed in me when I was younger, and GP [Gianpiero Lambiase] who has been a great engineer to work with.”
READ MORE: ‘I have so much more to offer racing then just being a driver.’  - Read Verstappen’s retirement statement in full
When asked about why he was retiring he had this to say, “I’ve achieved so much during my time in Formula 1, but after having won eight championships and being able to achieve that. It’s time to focus on my family. I love this sport and I won’t ever stop racing in some way. But it’s time to watch my children grow and be there to support them in their chosen endeavors.”
On the cusp of winning his 7th world championship, Verstappen’s daughter Nicole was born on the Monday before Verstappen would head to Abu Dhabi for the last race of the season. She’s the youngest of the four children that he has, three of them with his wife Y/N Verstappen. At the time there was a rumor that Verstappen wouldn’t be in Abu Dhabi because of his wife giving birth.
“I thought when my daughter was born I wouldn’t win the championship that year. I wasn’t even sure if I would go to the race, but my wife said, ‘Go, it’s a few days she will be without you but when you come home, even if you don’t win. You will get to hold her and know that you did your best during the race because you were fighting to come back to us.’ She was right, I fought hard to come home to them and walked away with the championship as a result.”
The points race was close that year by a small margin compared to years past being very reminiscent of his first World Drivers Championship in 2021.
After winning and accepting the trophy, Verstappen was quick to leave the track and fly back home to be with his wife and the new addition to his family. The day after he had won the championship, he posted a picture with his family after he was back home in Belgium. His daughter in one of his arms with a glass of champagne in his other hand, in celebration of his recent win with his wife by his side. His three other children were absent from that particular picture.
“Another long season, another win to share with those I love most.” His caption read.
“It will be tough to say goodbye to the team that I have known for my whole career in the sport. I am still a part of the Red Bull family, I will just be racing in a different category in the coming months if everything goes well.”
“I feel like I have so much more to offer racing then just being a driver, I have my own team ‘Verstappen.com’ where sim drivers have the opportunity to go from racing online to being in a real car. It’s something that I’ve been passionate about for years and I’m very excited for this to further come to fruition now that I will have more time to focus on that.” Verstappen said when he was asked what he plans to do after Formula 1.

November 24, 2030
Max didn’t think this day would ever come. Y/N and the kids were in the paddock today for his last race in Formula 1. Nico had been hanging out with Christian for most of the morning on the pitwall, Niki and Nik were with GP in the garage, and Nicole was holding Y/N’s hands. His daughter who had just turned two a few days ago had slipped away into Max’s arms tugging at his race suit wanting to be picked up.
“Papa,” She whined, with a tug of his sleeve. Max lifted her up and placed her on the table in front of all of the screens. Nicole pressed her face into his shoulder while he was talking with Jonathan. He tried to keep one of his hands on Nicole’s back while he was trying to explain something with his hands that had happened during qualifying the day before.
About 20 minutes later, Y/N and the kids were behind the viewing area in the garage. He fist bumped the boys, kissed Nicole on her forehead, and quickly kissed Y/N on the lips while running his finger over her chin. He pulled away from them putting his balaclava on, then slipped on his helmet before climbing into the car.
Getting through the race would easy. He was starting on Pole.
“Radio check for the last time Max.” He heard GP say.
“Loud and clear, GP.” He said. GP told him that it would start in a minute, and he could see the other mechanics pull the tire covers away from the car and some leaving to go back behind the pitwall and the others back to the garage. He was given the all clear for the formation lap, drove around the track before he was back before the start line. Another minute and it would be lights out and away we go for the last time when it came to racing in Formula 1.
Max kept his eyes on the track, taking in GP as he told him about engine settings during the race. He called for a pit stop for new tires, and Max finished off that lap before coming in. He had sat in the car, watching the mechanics work before he was off again out of the pit lane and onto the track again.
He overtook a few of the younger drivers on the grid, Doohan, Bearman, Piastri… Pink, Red, Orange…
“Max, strat 7, strat 7.” He heard GP over the radio. He immediately pressed the needed button on his steering wheel and made the adjustment that GP gave him.
A few laps later there was a yellow flag called, debris needed to be cleared off the track after a collision between Williams and Audi. Then before Max knew it GP was in his ear again, “Okay Max it’s up to you. You can come in for fresh tires and go for a fast lap or just ride it out till the end.”
Max knew what that meant. One last lap. He didn’t even have to think, “I’ll box for softs.”
“Box then.” GP replied.
Max kept driving before he made it to the pitlane and then drove through for a set of fresh softs. He met the mechanics, felt the car go up for a moment, the used mediums being taken off the car and the new set of softs be bolted on before the car was placed back down. It took him half a second to start driving to exit out of the pitlane. He exited the pitlane, and then did everything that he could to push for one last fastest lap. Max knew that he was pushing the car as much as it would let him, but he couldn’t help but feel that everything was slowing down as he got to the start of the long straight of the track.
The track was clear ahead of him. He kept on until he knew that he had made it across the line and the checkered flag had been waved.
“Max,” He heard Christian in his ears. “Thank you for everything you’ve done over the years mate. What a way to finish off your last race in F1, Pole, top step of the podium, and a fastest lap. It’s been a pleasure.”
Max knew that Christian was just saying this for the radio message. He would be seeing Christian in about a week for Niki’s birthday, and then again for the FIA Prize Giving.
“Yeah, thank you Christian. It’s been a ride. I said that I wanted to do this for 10 to 15 years more, so these years with the team have meant so much. Sending my best to the team, I’ll miss seeing them.”
Max kept driving before he finally heard GP chime in. “Well done, Max. It’s been special working with you.”
“Yeah, I’ll miss working with you too GP, racing won’t be the same.”
Max managed to pull his car up and then to a stop behind where the number 1 plaque was. He went to remove the steering wheel and then carefully got out of the car, placed the wheel back and then stood on top of it with his arms up in triumph.
He stepped off the car and ran towards the mechanics for the last time into their waiting arms. He got head pats before being placed down, moved to take off his helmet and then got weighed before leaving it on the stand. He looked out further to see Y/N and the kids around her, Nicole in her arms, Nico ever present at his mother’s side, with Niki and Nik doing their best to lean over the barricade.
He walked towards them, embracing his wife as soon as she was in arms reach. He had pulled away, only for Nicole to hug him and yell, “Papa!” into his ear, he had squeezed her to his chest for a moment before letting go. Then the boys all tried to hug him at one time awkwardly piling on top of each other, and it almost felt like he was being embraced by all of the mechanics again even though they were his own sons.
He had walked back over to where the other drivers were, exchanging handshakes and congratulations, some even saying goodbye as if they would never see him again. He looked out to the Abu Dhabi circuit one last time, and then turned to Will Buxton, who was waiting to ask him questions.
He had walked over getting ready for what Will threw at him because after today he would no longer be a F1 driver. His time in Formula 1 had officially come to an end.

Do you have any unpublished Max/Reader milestones for Mini Verstappen? I know you did the wedding and then getting engaged but if you have any other things that you may have taken out or felt like you didn't want to publish.
Hmm, that's a good question. 🤔 I wouldn't say that I have things that I don't want to publish. I just have things that are set earlier then where I'm writing right now that I haven't finished or scenes that interfere with things I've already published. As for milestones,
I have part of Max and Reader's first date in my drafts and it may include their first kiss but I don't know if it will as I've only written about 500 words.
Tumblr media
My little chapter headers that I use ⬆️ (Yes, all of the photos that make up the chapter headers are pre-chosen. I love setting the vibe for a chapter!)
I honestly would love to explore more of their relationship before reader knew about Nico and go back and add more to those eight months between the moment and Mini. SO much was skipped that I could have written about.
I have the time that Daniel walked in on Max and Reader when they were supposed to have a night alone in Max's apartment as hinted at in Caught. (Not a milestone but still a fun chapter that I started)
I have a scene about Max and Reader talking about possibly getting married before he goes to pick out a ring. It was later scrapped because of Day at the karting track and something bad.
And I did have something planned set during their honeymoon. I just wasn't happy with my original draft and if I were to publish it I would rewrite it entirely.
These have been sitting in my drafts until I have them finished.
Thanks for your question Anon! 🧡

I love the new update and I noticed the way that you described Max's hair in you last update as "The dirty hazel blond color she was so used to had been overtaken by sun soaked honey highlights" and was just wondering if you had a picture that you used to write that? If not it's okay! I'm just curious.
Hi Anon! Yes! There is definitely a reference picture for the way that I describe Max's hair in this chapter. It's also one of the last things I added as I was writing this chapter.
Photo reference that was used:
Tumblr media
I saw this picture show up on my tumblr dash a few weeks ago and just kept thinking, he looks SO BLOND!! I just had to use it in some way. Thanks so much for your question!

Of Father's and Children [Mini Verstappen Series]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dad!Max Verstappen x Wife!Reader (Established Relationship)
Summary: Father's Day 2029
Warning(s): Jos Verstappen (Off Screen)
A/N: I finished working on this while watching Suzuka Qualifying.
Words: 4.6k
Previous Part → Next Part Mini Verstappen Masterlist
Mykonos, Greece June 17, 2029
The smooth rocking of the ocean woke Y/N up. She opened her eyes to see that she was on the yacht and that Max was still asleep next to her in their bed.
They were in Greece for father’s day on a family trip. Sophie, Victoria, and Tom were here with the kids. Max had flown them to Monaco so they could get on the yacht and go to Greece. They were on the boat for two days, were spending the week in Greece and then would be sailing back to Monaco.
She slowly moved out of the bed placing her feet on the wood flooring slipping on her bathing suit and then a loose fitting cream summer dress over it. When she came back into the room Max seemed to have her pillow crushed into his chest.
She moved out of the room, and then over to the room closest to her and Max’s room to see if Nicole was awake. Nicole seemed to be fast asleep still. Y/N knew that picking her up  from her crib wouldn't rouse her  awake. So she reached in and placed her into her arms and headed towards the stairs that went up to the main deck to see that the staff on board had already laid out food for everyone.
“Morning, Mrs. Verstappen.” One of the Stewardesses said.
“Morning,” She replied, moving to an open chair so she could feed Nicole before anyone else woke up. She knew that everyone would slowly be filing into the main dining area soon. “Can I get a coffee?” She had asked before receiving a nod back.
“Your usual?”
“Yes, and can you also prepare some warm water?”
She got another quick nod back. Y/N was grateful that she was no longer breastfeeding Nicole and could just drink formula.
She had waited for the stewardess to bring her coffee and warm water with the packet of pre-measured formula. It was easy to add and shake in Nicole’s bottle, and Y/N got to sip at her coffee until Nicole decided to wake.
The Aegean Sea gave off a warm breeze in the early morning air. Nicole was drinking from her bottle, when two sets of footsteps entered the main deck. It was Sophie and Victoria, both in summer dresses.
“Morning, Y/N,” Victoria greeted her.
“Goedemorgen, mijn dochter.” Sophie said taking the seat next to her.
“Morning.” Y/N greeted them back. Sophie looked into the pink blanket around Nicole to see Max’s blue eyes greeting them both.
“Sometimes I forget that she looks like you, but has his eyes.”
She gave Sophie a smile back before a clean cup was placed before her. Nicole stopped eating after a few more moments and Sophie offered to burp Nicole.
She give it a few more minutes of her sitting with Sophie before taking Nicole with her to go and wake up Max. It was almost noon and she promised that the older kids would get to go swimming today.
She made her way to the owners cabin to Max still fast asleep. She climbed on top of the sheets and placed Nicole between her and Max. She slowly crawled over to him before he let out a small groan and turned over, his eyes slowly fluttered open, the blue of his eyes bright in the mid-day light.
“Happy Father’s day, Max,” She said with a smile.
“Thank you, mijn leeuwin.” He smiled back at her.
Nicole let out a little cry, trying to reach for Max and slapped the skin of his bare chest.
“Halo, schat.” He said with a small groan as he looked down and greeted her.
“Papa!” She heard a chorus of yells down the hallway before she heard three sets of feet making a run for the bed. Niki ended up sitting in her lap while Max looked over the hand drawn card that Nico had made Max with all of the kids names signed.
Niki looked at Max with a curious expression. “Like it Papa?” He asked.
“Yes, I do.” He reached to pull Nik into his chest a bit more.
She had been grateful when she had seen the size of the bed in the owners cabin, it was a Alaskan King; big enough if all of the kids somehow ended up asleep with her and Max.
It was hard to pull all of the kids out of her and Max’s cabin so he could put some clothes on and join everyone on the deck below for brunch.
When she was back on the deck below, the kids started to dig into the food laid out on the table while Nicole was now sitting in Sophie’s lap as she drank her coffee, letting Y/N eat and finish up her own coffee.
She heard a set of feet against the Italian flooring before feeling a very familiar hand on her shoulder.
“Morning,” Max greeted.
Max leaned down next to Y/N and kissed Sophie on the cheek and gave her a hug. Victoria came over and hugged Max.
“Is Tom still-” Y/N started to ask.
“He’s getting the boys up.” Victoria said, “Leo ended up waking us up after he had a nightmare.”
“Was he okay after?” She asked.
“Yeah,” Victoria said with a nod. “He slept with us last night, seemed to fall asleep not long after he came into our room.”
She saw Luka and Leo before seeing Tom trailing in after them.
“Afternoon,” Tom greets. She walk over to her brother-in-law giving him a hug which he returned
“Happy father’s day.” She say pulling away from him before Luka is reaching for his father’s hand.
“Thanks Y/N.” He replies.
Nico, Niki, and Nik eventually make their way over to Tom, giving their uncle a hug.
Max is next to come up to him and pulls him into a half hug. “Gelukkige vaderdag.” Max says. Tom says something to Max that she can’t quiet make out.
“Well I am a father two times more than you,” Max jokes before Tom ends up laughting having to push his glasses up before finding an empty seat at the table next to Victoria.
Y/N had already finished her coffee by the time that Nico begged if they can go swimming in the ocean.
“Please Mama, Luka and I will be careful.” Leo is trailing after them already having his blow up floaties in his hands.
“Let me get some towels and then I’ll come and watch you guys swim.”
“Yes!” Nico says before him and Luka high five running off to change into their swim gear.
“Mama,” Nik says reaching for her hand. Nik was very much her shadow, following her around the house, getting upset when she would leave a room. “No want to swim.”
She lifted him up and put him on the side of her hip. “Want to pick out a book? I can read to you instead.”
He just shook his head no and then pressed his face into the strap of her dress with his hand clutching onto the thin silk that was at the back of her dress.
Nik eneded up following her upstairs to get towels for the kids that were going to go swimming. She sat on one of the lounge chairs with Nik sprawled over her chest, the cotton fabric of his little hat buried in her neck.
Y/N looked out to where the swim platform was, she could see the older kids in the water with Max and Tom also in the water climbing over their shoulders trying to stay above the water. The loud sound of the kids laughter and the splashing of water filled her ears as Victoria moved to sit next to her.
She kept looking at Max seeing him moved his hair away from his eyes while Luka tried to climb onto his shoulders.
“Please stop looking at my brother like you want to jump his bones.” Victoria said to her as she kept looked down at him playing with the kids. “Isn’t making him a father four times over enough?”
She could only laugh at Victoria’s question. There was no way that Max could get Y/N pregnant again after he got a vasectomy after new years. She still couldn’t help but smile. God, did she so want to drag Max back to their cabin for a bit.
She could feel a light blush reaching her cheeks. How did Victoria know that what was what she were thinking?
“I promise that Max and I are done having kids, don’t worry.” She said as she did her best to try and hide her smile.
“You swear?” Victoria asked.
“I swear.” Y/N said looking over to Nicole to see her being cradled in Sophie’s arms. “We’re done having kids.”
“What about you and Tom? Another baby?”
Victoria just shook her head no. “After watching you and Max, I think Tom and I are done too. It would be nice to have more but-” She doesn’t finish her sentence.
She reach her hand over and then clasp it with Victoria’s.
She gives you a small but tight smile, a similar one that Y/N had seen on Max when he feels like he’s not ready to talk about something.
“I don’t know if I want to bring another baby into the family. We want more but with my dad,” Y/N noticed that Victoria says my dad not our as in her and Max when refering to Jos. “It just doesn’t seem like a good idea.”
“Well regardless of your dad, if you and Tom want more kids, I think that should only be up to you. It’s not about anyone else, you’ll be the one who’s having this baby.”
Her and Victoria share a look for a moment before she ends up nodding. She gives Y/N’s hand a squeeze back before reaching for her phone.
“I’ll be back in a bit.” Victoria says heading towards the stairs that lead up to where the guest cabins are. She saw that Victoria was gripping her phone in her hand.
Nik ends up waking up a few minutes later at the loud sound of yelling, rolling off her chest and into the chair. Y/N tries to slip away back to her and Max’s cabin to grab her hat out of the small walk-in-closet. She was making her way back down to the deck that was above the swim platform before hearing Victoria’s voice from just around the corner of the stairs.
“Fijne vaderdag, Papa.” She can hear Victoria say.
Y/N now knows that Victoria had called Jos. She can’t tell Max, she doesn’t want them to get into an argument around the kids. So she just swallows down her breath and says nothing before watching as the older kids start to play a board game with all of the little pieces being littered over the table.
The stewardess come out from inside and places a plate of food that the kids can snack on.
“You were supposed to move two spaces, not three.” Luka says to Nico.
“No! I rolled a two, and then I had to move another space because of the card I picked up.” Nico protests.
Y/N ends up next to the table. Sophie giving her Nicole so she can go inside and quickly grab something from her room. It only takes a few moments before Sophie is back and sitting next to her with a small paperback novel in her hands and Nicole dozing in her arms.
She can hear wet feet against the wood flooring to see Max in his wet swim trunks. He reaches for a towel and then looks to see that Leo and Niki are still in the infinity edge Jacuzzi with Tom watching over them.
Max’s hair had caught quite a  bit of sun the last few days and he looks so blond now. The dirty hazel blond color she was so used to had been overtaken by sun soaked honey highlights and turning his skin a light tan color.
“Where is Vic?” Max asked her. She shrugged her shoulders while Max ran a dry towel through his wet hair and over his chest.
He walked inside and leaving everyone outside to see his sister on the phone.
“Yes, Dad. He seems happy.” He heard his sister say. She was on the phone with Jos. There was a pause before she spoke again. “No, but he's happy with his family. And we both know he doesn't consider you a part of that.”
It was weird hearing Victoria tell Jos that he didn’t consider Jos as part of their family. That’s how it always was after Nico had entered Max’s life.
“I just wanted to wish you a happy Father's Day without bringing up Max.” She starts again. Max looks into the room and sees that Victoria has pulled the phone away from her ear. “He never asks about you so there's nothing to tell.”
Max just stands there for a few moments until he hears Victoria tell Jos goodbye and then he goes back outside.
He moves to sit next to Y/N as he sees her eating a few bites of food and then sees her do her best to feed Nik some of fruit that’s on a plate. He seems to have woken up in the time that has been gone. He resists for a few moments before she hands him over a cracker with cheese on it.
Victoria comes outside a few minutes later with a bottle of sparkling water in her hands. It looks like she’s been rubbing at her eyes with how red they look.
“Vic,” He says to her moving from his seat. “Can we talk for a moment?”
Victoria states at him for a second and then nods her head.
He leads her into the main living area of the yacht, puts a towel down and then sits on the leather couch.
“I heard you, when you were on the phone earlier,” He starts to say.
“Max-” Victoria starts. He puts his hand up to stop her from talking. He knows that she is going to try and reason with him. Say it’s not a big deal, that Jos is her father and she has a right to speak with him. She’s right, she does have the right to talk with him and he’s sick of feeling like he’s the reason that his sisters relationship with him is so fractured.
“I want to apologize to you about making everything hard when it comes to me and... dad.” He slowly says, the word dad feeling unfamiliar on his tongue. He hasn’t said it in almost 9 years. “You are my younger sister and you should never have been put in the middle of this.”
He took a small breath before starting again, “I understand that as the only daughter our parents had, you still want some type of relationship with him and it should have never been my place to make that harder on you. It’s just… we had very different childhoods when we were growing up, and once we were old enough to spend time with one another, Jos wasn’t around and I would be leaving home again in a few short months because of racing while he was locked away for something that he may or may not have done.”
Victoria just nodded at him meekly. He knew that she didn’t like talking about those years, it had always been a sore spot and only grew to be more so after Jos had taking the initiative to hide Nico from him. Max had never brought it up because he already had enough of a complicated relationship with Jos and he didn’t want to constantly remind his sister that having Jos around had never been easy even when they were kids.
“So you don’t need to hide when you call him or not bring him up to Luka and Leo. He is your father and I’m okay with him being in your life even if I don’t want him around Y/N and my kids… We’re family and he shouldn’t be the reason why we’re not close.” He says.
He’s waiting for her to say something back, ask a question, even yell at him that he has no right telling her this now after he was the one to sever the relationship with Jos and she had to deal with the fallout.
“Do, do you think that you’d be able to let him into your life again?” She manages to ask.
It’s too easy for him to immediately say no. He knows what she wants him to say and he can’t tell her what she wants to hear.
“I wish I could, but I just can’t trust him again. I know that it’s not what you want to hear-”
“But that’s how you feel Max,” She says placing her hands between her knees before looking up at him slowly.
“Yes it is.”
She just nods at him.
“Does that mean I can at least tell him things when he asks about you? I know you don’t want him to know about the kids, especially given the fact that Nico is in karts right now…”
He thinks about it, “I don’t know Vic. Maybe eventually, when I’m not racing anymore.”
That felt like it would be for the best. Jos could know about him when he was no longer a racing driver, when he was just a parent to his children.
“You don’t want to talk to him about those things?” She asked.
“He never made talking about those thing easy. With Christian-” He was about to say when Victoria seemed to pull away a little. “That isn’t a problem with Christian, he doesn’t push me to talk about those things even when we don’t agree.”
He can only guess what her and Jos talk about now but when Victoria gave up racing that was no longer a topic of conversation with them from what he can remember.
Victoria just nods at him. She is trying to understand, like every other time they have gotten into a argument about Jos. He wonders if she knows that he’s sick of fighting about this after all this time.
“I know that I haven’t really made it easy when you first wanted him out of your life, but I have been trying.”
“I know you have Vic and I know that he hasn’t done anything to you. It’s of course easier not to talk about him.”
“Maybe one day we can? You, me and mum?”
Max can only nod at her request. They manage to share a half-hearted hug before going back outside.
Max goes to find Y/N with Nicole awake in her arms eating. Max reaches down to kiss her on the cheek and feels her hand on the bare skin of his chest before he moves to sit next to her opening his arms for him to hold Nicole.
In the time that both he and Vic have been gone all of the kids seem to be out of the water. Victoria ends up coming outside a few moments after to sit next to Tom who seeems to be drying Leo off with a towel.
He can see them talking for a few minutes before Tom looks over at him and gives him a slight nod. He knows that Victoria and Tom have talking about this now.
Max drops his eyes to Nicole seeing her wide blue eyes looking up at him. He lets out a small breath and clutches her a little closer to him.
It’s a little hard for Max to be able to relax until dinner. Everyone is showered and changed into their dinner clothes. They’re eating out on the upper deck with the kids on the far end of the table with Nicole in a high chair next to his mom insisting that she feed her.
Dinner turns lighter as food is placed into the table, Y/n and Victoria talking about the latest clothing styles from one brand that they both like. And then he can hear them talk about the latest birthday gifts that they both want, Max only half listening to them. Tom pulls him into a conversation about Luka and Leo, and then he rebuttals with a story about Niki and Nik. He swears sometimes that they should have been born twins even though they were born 18 months apart. They have his lighter brown hair, Niki having Y/N’s eyes, Nik with his and are growing pretty tall for being almost 3 and 4.
He wonders where the time has gone. It seems like he was seeing them walk for the first time only a few weeks ago.
Nico had walked up to him abandoning his dinner leaning up into Max’s chair, “Papa can I show them my helmet?” He asked.
“Nico your helmet is at home.” He answered. “But if you get my phone I can let you show them pictures of it after it was done being painted.”
Nico nodded, leaving the deck in search of Max’s phone. He was back next to Max’s chair in a few minutes with his iPhone in his hands.
It took Max a few moments to look through his text messages from the guys at JMD helmets. He found a few of his own for this season before finding the custom one that was made for Nico.
“Here.” He said handing it over. “I want it back as soon as you are done.” Knowing that there was a chance that Nico would just end up playing games on his phone. Both he and Y/N were trying to break him of the habit of sitting in front of his iPad when there were people with them.
Nico ends up giving him back his phone after a few minutes.
The kids start to get ancy after they’ve eaten. It takes a few more minutes for the kids to decide on a board game to play. Niki, Nik, and Leo are falling asleep while Nico and Luka are still playing with all of the other game pieces being put back in the box after they’ve given up.
“Come on guys. Time for bed.” Max heard Y/N say as she is standing in the living room with Victoria at her side.
“But Mama we want to finish our game.” Nico whines. Luka nods in agreement.
Y/N just shakes her head. “Brush your teeth and then bed. We’re getting up early tomorrow to go into town.”
“Okay,” Nico says dragging his feet on the floor.
Max moves to help Y/N peel Niki and Nik off the couch and into their bed. Y/N does the job of quickly changing them into their pajamas settling them into the sheets.
Max moved out of the room to see that his mum was changing Nicole out of the white onesie that she had been wearing during the day and was now in her footie pajamas that was being buttoned up.
“Mum, you don’t have to.” He says stepping into Nicole’s room knowing that he needed to put her to bed or she could possibly wake everyone up.
“I want to. You and Y/N have your hands full with the other kids.”
“I know.”
“I just want to see them more.” She says reaching to pick her up.
“Well you’ll be able to see the kids as much as you want soon.” He says before he can stop himself.
She gives him a quizzical look.
“Y/N and I have been talking about moving home after my contract is up, maybe sooner.” Max had missed living in Belgium. It was where they normally spent Christmas, and all of the kids had been born there sans Nico. The house there felt the most like home, and it was nice that his mum lived a few kilometers from them. She could visit anytime she wanted once they were living there full time.
Sophie clutches Nicole to her chest.
“Really?” She asked and Max just nods. He doesn’t tell her that they’ve been talking about it since his previous contract ended. He wanted another year in F1, to see if he could even win another championship before the regulations changed again in 2031.
Sophie is quick to put Nicole into her crib before reaching over to Max to hug him. “How long before you think you’ll move?” She asks.
“Maybe another year, I want to see how the season will keep playing out. It may be worth it to leave sooner.”
Max can hear footsteps coming from the hallway to see Y/N standing in the hall making her way into the room.
“So, you know.” She says to Sophie. Sophie just nods back to her and then steps away from him.
“Good, I didn’t feel like hiding it from you anymore.”
Sophie laughs. “So this is why you were avoiding me, I just thought that you were pregnant again.”
“No, No.” Both he and Y/N said at the same time shaking their heads.
“I just told Victoria today that we are done having kids.” Y/N said leaning against the doorway.
“Well after Nicole, you never know.” They all share a laugh before looking over to see the little girl falling asleep in the crib.
“Okay, well I’ll leave you. I’ll be up on the deck.” Sophie says before hugging them both.
“Want to grab her and watch a movie?” She asks. Max just nods and then quickly and careful reaches into Nicole’s crib and lifts her out of it.
He ends up joining Y/N back in their room, she’s already changed into her lace nightgown and is climbing under the sheets. She moved a little closer to the edge of the bed, Nik already gripping one of the pillow under his arm.
Max sets Nicole down in bed so he can change out of his shorts and shirt. He brushes his teeth and then climbs under the sheets before reaching into the nightstand to turn on the TV to watch a movie.
They settle in to watch a comedy when he looks over to see that Y/N has started to fall asleep. There are a few minutes left and he is trying to keep his eyes open long enough to let it play out before turning the TV off and going to bed.
“Papa,” Nico said. Max immediately opens his eyes to see Nico standing in the doorway of the owner’s cabin. “Can I sleep in here tonight?”
Max looked over to the other side of the bed with Y/N already asleep with Nicole in her arms, and Niki and Nik sleep next to each other as the end credits of the movie were playing. Max knew that he shouldn’t let him as Nico was getting to big to still be sleeping in bed with his parents.
Max just nodded. Nico climbed up from the end of the bed. Max moved the sheets to the side before Nico ended up between his brothers. Max was quick to turn off the TV before it was lowered back into its stand and the lights in the room where fully turned off.
“Love you Papa.” Max heard as he started to close his eyes.
“Love you too, Nico.” Max said throwing his arm over the sheets to feel Y/N slips their hands together as his eyes finally grew to heavy to keep open anymore.

The One That I Adore [Bittersweet Mini Series]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charles Leclerc x Fem!Reader
Summary: She promised him that he would see her again. She just never said when that would be.
A/N: Sorry for the super long wait of this chapter. My inspiration for this work has been at a bit of a stand still. But I already have the next two chapters started so they will hopefully be done sooner.

This whole night was too much for him. Charles could appreciate being in Santorini for the awards ceremony but had no desire to stay for the actual gala after the awards were handed out.
Charles had been with Lando, Pierre, Max, and Max’s wife at the awards ceremony. Giving out the awards had ended half an hour ago. The married couple had disappeared about 10 minutes ago and they hadn’t been seen since.
“Has anyone seen the Verstappen’s?” Lando asked.
“I think they went back to their hotel,” Pierre replied. That was what everyone assumed happened when Max unexpectedly disappeared from a party. Either they went home if they were in Monaco, or Belgium, or back to their hotel room for the night. It wasn’t like it mattered, Max had already done all of his media duties for the night.
“Really?” Lando asked, Charles could tell from the tone of his voice that his question was littered with a sarcastic tone. “Because I’m pretty sure I just saw them snogging in the corner by the coat closet.”
Lando pointed in the direction of the way out of the room. Charles couldn’t help but lightly chuckle.
“It’s like their wedding all over again,” Lando said with a slight groan. “Only this time, Daniel isn’t taking pictures of the whole thing.”
“At least it’s not Barcelona 2023 when she decided to surprise Max.” Pierre couldn’t help but bring up with a laugh.
“I told both of them and you that it was an accident.” Lando just shook his head, but Charles could spot the light blush that was now painting Lando’s cheeks.
Charles knew that Lando was tired of hearing about that time when he had walked up to Max’s hotel room after the Grand Prix was over to ask if he wanted to get drinks and ended up finding the hotel room door not all the way closed, and Max and his then-girlfriend, now wife in a compromised position. There was never enough brain bleach to remove what Lando saw from his memory when he walked into that hotel room that day.
“What’s going on with you?” Pierre asked as they stood together. “You have been acting strange since the moment I saw you.”
Sometimes Charles forgot how well Pierre knew him. Charles hadn’t really been talking to any of the other guys. His eyes were too busy running over the crowds of people looking for her, he hadn’t seen her since he showed up. The one bright spot of his whole evening was nowhere to be seen.
“Nothing.” He quickly replied. Pierre gave him a look that would have given his less-than-stellar English a run for its money.
“You are lying through your teeth.” Pierre’s switch to French made Lando look at them both.
“I’m not lying, I’m just looking at the people.” He raised his shoulders in defense.
“Right,” Pierre said before looking away.
Charles looked through the crowd of people again not seeing her anywhere. Maybe she wasn’t here tonight, maybe something had come up with her schooling or something. Hadn’t she said that her uncle normally came to these events instead of her?
“Carlos,” Charles heard Lando say. “Can you please help me out with Charles? It’s like he’s on another planet or something.”
Charles pulled up the sleeve of his dress shirt to look at his watch. It read 9:45 pm. He was allowed to leave by 11:30 after all of his press duties were done. That’s what he gets for showing up late.
“I’m sorry Lando, but I can not help you,” Carlos said with a shrug of his shoulders.
“Why not?”
“Because he has been like this since Monaco.”
“That was six months ago.” Charles wanted to correct Lando, it wasn’t six months it had been seven months since the Monaco Grand Prix.
Charles hadn't bothered telling anyone else on the grid about her. Max knew and so did his wife. Charles didn't want to be teased by any of the other drivers when it came to her. He was too scared that she would run from him and he wouldn't see her again, and he wasn’t willing to bet on that.
The rest of the Gala passed by painstakingly slow, Charles didn’t see her anywhere and at this point was pretty sure that she either wasn’t here or negated her promise to him.
At one point Charles got stuck in a conversation with a few of the Ferrari sponsors and one of them had mentioned that his niece was supposed to come with him tonight but couldn’t because of a scheduling issue with her school. His interests peaked for a moment. But it couldn’t be her, there was no way they were the same person.
By the time 11:15 rolled around, Charles said his goodbyes to Fred after managing to slip away from the crowds of people, and made his way out to his car to go back to his hotel. Once he got to the hotel, he changed out of his suit and then quickly sat at his little portable piano. His fingers glided over the black and white keys. A somber melody played as he tried to think of her, dancing in her red dress, in the reverie of his mind.
Tumblr media
The Ferrari Fashion show was something that Charles had grown used to. It was a part of driving for the team. He would get to sit in a crowd, hopefully be unrecognizable, and watch clothes go down a runway.
There were so many faces that he didn’t recognize, not a single sponsor in the room, but plenty of influencers, and fashion people that he didn’t normally rub elbows with.
It was easy to find his seat from there, it was on a white card on the backrest in the first row towards the front of the white runway. Some people were already sitting, others were standing by their seats.
He took his time walking over, seeing people in Ferrari branded clothes, or some off shade color of the famous Rosso corsa. He took a seat, and could see Lewis on the other side of the runway in a red Louis Vuitton set with black shoes.
More seats started to fill up, and for a moment he swore he saw her pass by in one of the back rows. But as soon as she was there, the lights had started to dim signifying the show starting.
Charles did his best to keep his eyes on the models and the clothes that were coming down the runway, but sometimes the light would hit just past the first row and he would go looking for her in the crowd.
The show felt like it lasted forever, models going around an endless carousel. The sound of cameras constantly clicking felt like hands on a clock going around and around, click, click, click.
The show eventually ended, people started walking out in little packs. Charles stayed behind for a few moments before someone knocked shoulders with him pushing him towards the front of the room. There was supposed to be some dinner happening after the show that he wasn’t sure if he would be going to.
“I think it would be good for you to go.” He heard from an older gentleman standing next to someone. “You’re working for us now, you’re going to have to get used to being around these types of people.”
“I know uncle,” He heard in a voice he had memorized by now.
“You’ll do great. I believe that you can impress any person in this room if you try.”
She gave the man a nod and heard her say, ”I’ll try.”
He was quick to reply afterwards saying that he would see her after the dinner and to text if she needed anything. He saw the older man get into a black town car and drive away.
She was still standing there and Charles took small steps towards her. He was pretty sure that she wasn’t paying him any attention, just looking from her phone to the back alley of the venue. When she finally did look up, their eyes instantly met. He felt like he could see a glimpse of worry fill her eyes for a moment before it disappeared.
It took her a moment to say anything, and he could tell how awkward she felt for a bit. Eventually they talked about the show, which was a little boring but he hadn’t seen her in almost a year and didn’t want to push her.
“Are you heading to the dinner now?”
“Yeah, just waiting for my car.”
“We can take mine since we are going to the same place.” He felt like he was pushing his luck a little, asking if she would want to sit in an enclosed space with him for the half-an hour it would take to get to their dinner location.
“Umm,” She said, sounding a little unsure. “Okay. I guess.”
She was quick to tuck her phone into the small handbag that was hanging off her wrist. They walked over to the valet and waited until the red Ferrari pulled up. They both got in with the sound of Ambient Downtempo music that filled the silence of the car ride, it wasn’t Charles’ normal preference but she didn’t seem to mind, even having the courage to reach over and turn the stereo up at a song she seemed to like.
For Charles it was definitely a challenge to drive through the city and be able to concentrate on the road while she was sitting so close to him. Just as Charles felt like he was gaining the courage to talk to her they had pulled up to where the dinner was being hosted. He was happy to see that there weren’t any cameras around the car waiting to catch pictures of him.
Charles had gotten out of the car. He intended to walk over to the other side to open her door, but the valet had beat him to it. However, he still waited for her, giving her his arm so it would be a little easier to walk in. “Thank you.” She muttered before tucking her head a little low. He gave her a smile, trying to do his best to reassure her. He didn’t know why he felt like he needed to. They made their way through before finding out that they would be sitting at different tables. They were sectioned off by number, she had tucked the place card into her bag before he got the chance to look. Charles took his but still let her hold onto his arm before they walked into the room finally separating.
He let her slip away from him, doing nothing more than exchanging a smile and parting ways. He was sure that he would see her again tonight.
Dinner had been a slow affair. He had been sitting with Lewis, and although his fellow teammate was nice to talk to about team things, he would have preferred to sit and talk with her instead. The second course had come and Lewis had left to the other side of the room. He saw her move from her chair at a far table, moving closer to the side of the room that he was on. He had been eating through his burrata and tomatoes when he could see her again. “I am so sorry.” He heard close to him. “You were sitting over there right?” He didn’t hear a response. “I hate to ask, but would you mind switching tables with me?”
“Sure.” He heard before he saw a woman with blonde hair move out of her seat that was at the same table as Charles and saw her move into that seat instead.
He had watched the blonde woman move to the far side of the room, retaking the further seat and started talking to someone at that table. This was Charles’ opportunity to talk to her again, she was only sitting on the other side of his table.
He lifted his hand up slightly trying to catch her attention. She barely lifted her hand back to wave at him before he moved his napkin off his lap and onto the chair next to him. He was hoping that she would have the courage to come and sit next to him since he seemed to be the only person that she knew here.
She didn’t, at least not at first. She seemed to pick at the food on her plate taking a few bites before placing her fork back down. He always felt like a bit of a voyeur looking at her, watching as her eyes moved around the room until they stopped at him.
Her eyes looked at him as if she was asking as if it was okay to come up to him, her eyes going slightly to his left to the open chair where his napkin was. He gave her a small nod, telling her it was okay to sit with him despite the fact that it was someone else's seat.
She had moved from her seat and over to him, he picked up his napkin and placed it back in his lap pushing his chair out just a tad so he could turn away from Lewis’ chair to talk to her.
It takes her a few moments to move from one chair to another. He notices that she sets her bag down first before pulling the chair out.
"Hey," she greets him.
"Hi." He can't help but say back. For all the flirting that he has done with her the last few times he saw her he can't seem to do that anymore. He knows a family member of hers is a team sponsor, he would love to pretend that he is unaware of this.
"You weren't at the last Gala," He blurts out.
Her eyes filled with recognition, "Yeah, something with school came up. I was in my last semester and had finals but I'm now out of college and working for my uncle."
So, she hadn't negated on her promise. "It was not the same without you," He says before he can stop himself. "Too stuffy, sitting around waiting for things to happen." Charles knows he's rambling a bit but he did miss her. He needs to finally get the courage to ask for her number, that would be much easier.
"Is this like that as well?" She asked.
"No," He moved to pick up his fork. "I get to leave after dinner and get to go back to my hotel."
"You don't go party after?"
"No, no. I am not Lando." Placing his fork down and waving his hands in protest.
"So what do you do then?"
"Normally I go and play my piano in my room, or watch something." He enjoyed his solitude. It was part of his whole tortured artist thing that Arthur liked to make jokes about. Which was funny since his younger brother was very much the same.
She doesn't say anything for a moment. Did she think that was an invitation to come back to his hotel with him?
"I'm sorry," she says. "I'm bad at this... We keep meeting at these events and-"
"It never goes further?" He asks. She nods back at him.
“Maybe we can exchange numbers or-” He started to say and then cut himself off. No, bad idea. Her family worked for his team.
“Or?” She askes.
“Next time, you can come with me?” He lets himself ask. He knows he’s taking a risk.
“Come with you?” She asks back.
“Yes, I pick you up from your hotel or where you are staying. We can cordinate with whoever sets you up to come to these events.” This feels like a longshot. She won’t agree to this.
“Do you really want to see me that badly again?” She asks. He can feel like she wants to say that she’s not special enough for that.
All he can do is nod at her. There is nothing else that he can say. Or nothing that he can say that he knows won’t scare her off. He would like to say that he feels like he’s falling for her, that he wants to get to know her more, to feel like he has a tangable part of her for him to grab onto instead of just the moments they seem to catch each other in.
He doesn’t want to keep thinking of her as the girl who sneaks off during the party, he wants to always have the image of her dancing in his mind to the melody that comes from his fingers. He’s sick of looking at the incomplete page of sheet music, it’s been tauning him since he last saw her.
“I-” She starts to say and then cuts herself off. “I can-” She’s cut off by someone coming to their table.
“Uncle,” She quickly says to the older man he saw at the Prize Giving Gala at the end of last year. Her eyes are wide, she is obviously surprised to see him.“I thought I was going to see you after.”
“You were supposed to, but something came up.” The older man says. “I just wanted to let you know that I’m taking a flight back home. My assistant will call you in the morning with your flight details. I don’t want you to feel stranded here without knowing what’s going on.”
She gives him a nod back.
The older man looks at him and then back to her.
“Take care of her son.” He said to Charles. “I’ll call you when your at home on Monday.”
The older man leaves them. Charles can’t help but let out a heavy breath.
She immediately starts to apologize after, “He’s like that with everyone.”
“And you work for him?” He asks.
“He offered me a job after I was finished with school, a good stepping stone.”
“And you also live with him?” He can’t help but ask even though he knows that he’s assuming.
“No, I don’t. My uncle lives in New York. When I was going to school I lived in Los Angeles, but I work at my uncles office in Monaco… It’s been a big adjustment these last 6 months.”
Ah that explains a lot of things, it really seemed like she just disappeared from the world for a while. She probably has been under a lot of stress.
“Well, I would still like to go to the next event with you. If you can clear it with your uncle.”
“I would love to but I’m not sure if-” She starts to say.
And he can read the rejection, he knows what it is.
He instead reaches for his phone before she can say anything else.
“Just take my number. If he says no, then I at least know that you tried.” He takes the place card with his name on it and shovels around in the pockets of his jacket. He knows he has a pen somewhere even though he hates that it’s become a habit that he now carries one with him.
He starts to write it before slowly handing it over.
He watches as she tentatively takes it from him and slips it into her small bag that doesn’t even look big enough to fit a phone in.
He can only sit and keep talking to her from there. Her shoulders seem to loosen again after a bit. They bring out the next course of food and sit and talk as they both pick at what ends up on their plates.
There is a low brrng of a phone going off close to them before she looks down and sees her pull out a phone from under her dress. It doesn’t look like it would fit into the bag she has with her.
‘I’m sorry.’ she mouthes and then moves to walk to the other side of the room.
He can feel that she is being forced away from him, and all he wants to do is sink his fingers around her wrist and pull her back.
He doesn’t though. He watches her be pulled away from him to the other side of the room to talk to whoever is on the phone, and then into a conversation with someone else to rub shoulders with other people he doesn’t care to acknowledge. She seems to disappear into the night at some point, after being paraded around the room and all he can do it wait for the dinner to end and go back to his hotel room. He doesn’t bother changing, opens the piano cover and sinks his fingers into the keys on the far right end, the haunting notes spilling from his fingers.
It seems like she will continue to live in his daydreams a little longer.
He finds the sheet music with her melody on it and at the top of the page writes;
Tumblr media
He places the pen on the sheet music stand and leaves it sitting there. We will meet again, he promises himself after he’s moved off the piano stool to finally change out of his suit.

Hey... I have a tiny question that I hope does not come across as rude. I have loved reading through Mini Verstappen, its very well written and I appreciate that you are sharing your work here🧡. My question is why are all the kids names a variation of the name nicholas? Like all of them are nicholas, I'm just curious.
Hi, thanks so much for reading. I really appreciated it! Haha, I love that you have that question. 😍 So when I was first choosing all of the names of the kids that wasn’t the case as Nico’s name was originally Noah before I decided to change it last minute. And then after that I decided to have all of the kids names start with Ni-. (Don’t know if that may seem strange or not.) So Nikita for Niki even though he's "officially" named after Niki Lauda, Nikolaas for Nik and then Nicole. Them all being a slight variation of Nicholas is more of a happy accident that I wasn’t really paying attention to until my beta reader asked me about it 6 months into writing this and all of the names were already chosen at that point.

Hey, Little Sister [Mini Verstappen Series]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dad!Max Verstappen x Mother!Reader (Established Relationship)
Summary: "You wanted this Max. You wanted her."
Warning(s): Christian Horner, Giving birth complications (Not from the Reader's POV)
A/N: Gender reveal idea taken from TikTok. The birthing complications mentions in the chapter is taken from a story that I read on Reddit. You'll notice that I told it from Max's POV as to not make it graphic but what the reader goes through in this chapter is very serious and still shouldn't be taken lightly.

March 27, 2028
It had been a relatively normal Tuesday morning so far, waking up early to feed the kids and then get ready to head into the office today. Y/N had been in the bathroom when a sudden wave of dizziness caused her to grip the sink before covering her mouth with her hand, and ran to empty her stomach into the toilet.
As she kept throwing up her morning coffee she heard footsteps coming from behind her, slowly pulling her hair away from her face, and the feeling of Max’s hand running over her back letting herself slump forward a little more. He stayed with her until she pulled herself away from the toilet, and moved back to the sink to brush her teeth.
“You should stay home.” Max was quick to say.
“I can’t stay home Max, we are having an investor meeting today and I have to be there.” As one of the top earners at the hedge fund that she worked at she couldn’t not show up for today’s meeting. “I’ll drop Nico off at school and go in, after the meeting ends, I’ll come straight home.”
This wasn’t the first time that she had been sick in the last two months, she had gotten a mild cold right before their anniversary and had been on antibiotics until she had finished off the 10 day prescription.
“Okay, but straight home after you pick up Nico?” He said, almost like he wanted to scold her for even thinking about spending time in the office around other people when she normally worked from home and was only around her co-works once a week unless something important happened.
“Yes, Max. I’ll even call my doctor and schedule something. Okay?” She asked.
Max gave her a nod and kissed her forehead. “You throw up again, I want you to come straight home.” He said. She nodded before moving to put on her makeup for the day, got dressed into a burgundy red blouse, black knee length pencil skirt and 3 inch heels and then made sure that Nico was ready to go.
Y/N and Nico got into her car, and as she was driving him to school she noticed that she didn’t feel nearly as nauseous as when she had woken up that morning.
“Bye Mama.” Nico said, sliding out of his seat with his backpack in his hands.
“Love you Neeks, I’ll pick you up at the end of the day.” Nico gave her a small wave and then closed the door. She waited until she saw him walk inside of the school building and then drove off to work.
The drive to the office that she worked at took another 20 minutes from Nico’s private school. She had pulled into the underground parking and found her normal spot where a plaque read; Specter Bouchaund Capital Employee Parking.
She had stopped her Bentley on the far right next to a few McLaren’s and Ferrari’s that some of her co-workers drove. She pulled her purse and laptop bag with her, locking the car and then took the elevator up to the 20th floor.
She had walked out of the elevator and into the large open concept office. There was a long black reception desk separated by a glass wall with the words Specter Bouchaund Capital in frosted lettering.
Y/N waved at the receptionist who was stationed at the front desk and got a small wave back before a younger woman came up to Y/N with a coffee cup and a small stack of white papers.
“Morning Y/N.” Monique; her assistant had said, giving her the cup. “You already have a few calls this morning. I moved them around so they wouldn't interfere with the meeting.”
“Thank you. Would you also be able to make an appointment with my doctor? I’m not feeling the best and I’m not sure what’s going on.”
“Your OB or your primary?”
Y/N had never considered that her being sick this morning could mean that she was pregnant. She never had morning sickness with any of the boys.
“Let’s start with the OB, if it’s nothing I can call my primary.”
Monique gave her a nod and they walked to the far left side of the floor to Y/N’s office.
Y/N’s name on the door read;
Y/N Verstappen Junior Portfolio Manager
Y/N sat down her cup and moved her laptop from her bag onto the glass top desk. It was mostly bare aside from a few picture frames, one was of Max with the boys, Nico and Niki on each side of Max and Nik sitting on Max’s lap. The one next to it was one of her and Max at their wedding with Nico standing in front of them.
There was a knock on her office door. Y/N looked up to Monique standing there, “The shareholder meeting is starting in 10 minutes. If you’re not early-”
Monique didn’t need to finish her sentence. She already knew what she was going to say. “Steven is going to yell that time is money.”
Steven was Y/N’s boss, a Portfolio Manager and her direct superior. He had been in the business for over 20 years and had more money to his name than her and Max combined. It was easy to say that he was good at his job.
Monique gave her a nod. Y/N collected her phone and laptop. She was sure that someone in that meeting was going to ask about market projections for the coming quarter.
The meeting felt like it took forever. Market projections for the next quarter were asked about as well as a new investor who wanted to start working with the company. It lasted a full hour and then she was back in her office looking over something for a client who wanted to put money into a company based in Beijing. She didn’t think it was a smart investment, too much risk for what he wanted and not enough of a reward in the long run.
There was a knock on her office door. She looked up to Monique walking through the door, “So I was able to schedule you for an appointment with your OB today at 1, if that doesn’t work I can call back and see if they have something in the next few weeks.”
Y/N was quick to open the calendar on her phone, she didn’t have a lunch meeting with anyone today.
“Yeah that should work out. Nico gets out at 4 so it’ll give me plenty of time to come back here before I have to pick him up.”
“Okay, I’ll call them back and let them know,” Monique said with a quick nod.
The rest of her morning went by rather slowly, instead of finishing the cup of coffee that had grown cold after her meeting, she had Monique make her a cup of tea and put in some honey hoping to settle her stomach before her appointment.
She had grabbed her bag and was out of the office by 12:20, her usual OBGYN was in Monte Carlo. She had parked her car with the valet, handed over her keys and made her way up to Dr. Casse office. Dr. Casse was the OB that she had while she was in Monaco, she had another OBGYN when she was back in Belgium who got recommended to her by Dr. Casse.
She walked into Dr. Casse’s office and greeted the receptionist, signing in and then took a seat in the waiting room. She saw a few other people scattered around in chairs around the room, before hearing a chipper voice call, “Y/N Verstappen?”
She stood up, and followed the nurse in the pink scrubs back into one of the exam rooms. She left her to change out of her clothes and into the thin sheet that made up the gown. She couldn’t help but curl her toes in against the cold tile flooring of the exam room.
The room was a little cold as she sat back on the exam table. “Y/N?” Dr. Casse said.
“Yes,” she answered.
“It’s been a while since you’ve been in my office. How are the boys?”
“Doing well, Nikita’s finally learning that he can out run Max if he tries hard enough.”
“Ah yeah, he must be getting so big.”
“He looks more and more like Max every day.”
“I bet.” The doctor moved to sit back in the chair by the window with Y/N’s file in her hands. “So, not here for a check up, I assume.”
“I’m not really sure. I threw up this morning, and felt a little dizzy beforehand.”
“Have you been taking your birth control? We wouldn’t want what happened with Nikita to happen again.”
She had still been on birth control when she found out that she was pregnant with Nikita. It had also been the first time that she had been in Dr. Casse’s office. Dr. Casse had immediately taken her off the birth control, put her on prenatal supplements, and then had her schedule another appointment for the following week after the ultrasound. Niki looked healthy for 6 weeks along. It was starting to really dawn on her that she could be pregnant again.
“I was, but I was sick at the end of January.”
“Did they have you on medication?” The doctor asked checking her file.
“Yeah, a 10 day prescription.”
“There is a chance that it threw off your birth control. We’ll do an ultrasound and then if nothing comes up we’ll run a blood test after.” The folder was placed down by the sink in the room.
Y/N nodded back at the doctor before the ultrasound machine was rolled over towards her. Cold gel was placed on her abdomen and then Dr. Casse pressed the wand into her skin going to look for the signs of a baby growing in her belly for the third time.
It took a few moments before something showed up on the screen and the sound of a fast watch like tick came from the machine.
“And there it is...” Dr. Casse said. “The fetus looks healthy, and based on this I would say that you're around 8 weeks along. Making you due late November. If we’re lucky the next time that you're in here we can find out the gender.”
All she could do was look at the screen and count back the weeks. Her and Max had conceived a child on their anniversary. There was another child that she and Max had created, together. They hadn’t been trying for another baby, her and Max had talked about waiting the suggested 16 months this time around after Nik was born, but they still wanted the kids to be close in age. She never thought she would get pregnant this fast, again.
Y/N had thanked the doctor, and she had left to get her the sonogram pictures so she could share them with Max. Y/N was given a towel to wipe off the gel and was given a couple minutes to put her work clothes back on. She sat in the chair that Dr. Casse had occupied a few minutes ago, taking in a few deep breaths. This isn’t what I was expecting, she thought. It wasn’t that she was unhappy with the news… It’s just a lot right now. She forced her eyes open a little, took another deep breath before walking out of the exam room. She had been handed the small stack of photos and then made another appointment for 4 weeks later.
From there she walked back to the parking lot and sat in her car for a few moments just taking it in. Her hand somehow had dropped to her abdomen and she wanted to call Max right away and tell him the news. It was hard going back to work after that. Sitting in her office, being on the phone with a few of the traders that worked in the building with her. 4 o’clock couldn’t come fast enough before she was out of her office and into her car to pick up Nico from school.
She had pulled up to the school when she saw Nico leave the building his classroom was in. His backpack moved sloppily with his before he was in the car. “Hi, Mama!” He said slightly out of breath.
“Hey, Neeks. How was school?” Hearing the backseat door close.
Nico went on a rant about his day, talking about what he had learned in his classes and that if he kept doing well the rest of the year, he would be able to take on a second language class next school year. Nico’s teacher, Ms. Sazarrin said that he was ahead of the class and for a child that didn’t grow up speaking any French was taking to it like a fish to water.
“And what did you learn today? Anything that would surprise Uncle Charles?”
“No, not yet. We got to read through a menu in class. Escargot sounds gross.” Nico said with a disgusted look reaching his face.
“Yeah it does. Do you know what Escargot is?” Y/N asked, pulling away from the school.
“Snails. But I didn’t like the sound of Ratatouille when I thought it was made of rats.”
“No, I didn’t think you would. How did you feel when you found out that it’s made of vegetables?”
“Better, rat sounds gross to eat.” She agreed with Nico. Rat didn't sound appetizing. The idea made her start to feel a little queasy, damn the pregnancy hormones.
“I’m working from home tomorrow so if you want to try it, we can.” She said, swallowing down the need to puke.
“Really?” He asked, perking up in his seat.
“Yeah, we can even watch the movie that is named after the dish.”
“But doesn’t Nik need to go to bed early?”
“Not too early, I’ll make dinner a little early so we can stay up to watch it. And then when it’s over Papa and I will put Niki and Nik to bed.” She was happy that the younger kids were sleeping through the night. Sylvie would already have gone home by then so she and Max could spend some time with Nico before he needed to go to bed.
“You promise?” He asked hopefully.
“I promise.” She reached for her phone when they were at a stop light and put in a note in her reminders app to go get vegetables for tomorrow.
They eventually pulled up to the house, Nico moving out of the backseat with his backpack in his hand while she left her laptop bag in the car, instead taking her purse and digging out her keys so they could get into the house. There was sound coming from the living room with the TV on, the sound of what had to be Dutch cartoons playing in the background.
“Hi Papa!” Nico greeted Max dropping his bag under the console where she had placed her keys. Nik let out an audible scream as she walked closer to where the living room was gated off. She walked closer to the sound and saw Niki standing holding onto Max’s pant leg. He could fully walk by himself but still liked hanging onto Max.
Max reached out and kissed his wife on the cheek and then passed Nik over so he could hug Nico.
“How was school?” Max asked while opening the baby gate.
“Good, Ms. Sazarrin had us read a menu in French during class,” Nico started to explain to Max while Y/N went to sit on the couch and read to the younger boys. She had slipped her heels off and curled her toes in pleasure, the leather of her shoes no longer restricting her toes.
In some ways she couldn’t think about wanting anything more than what she already had, she was happy just being a mom to the boys but she also knew how much Max wanted a daughter. Maybe her being pregnant this time would finally give Max that.
Her eyes went up from the book that she was reading to Nik who found more joy in just turning the pages than her actually reading it when her eyes met Max’s.
“How are you feeling?” He had asked. Nico had run off to the cabinet where his coloring books were.
“Better than this morning, I have some news. Don’t want to tell the kids yet.”
Max looked at her a little concerned.
“It’s nothing bad Max, I promise.”
“Are you sure?” He asked before Nik shoved one of his plastic toys into Max’s face. Max was quick to move his face so he wouldn’t get hit.
“Nik,” She said. “Don’t hurt Papa.”
Nik looked up at her and then over to Max before scooting on the blue area rug away from them and then stuck his hand in the open box of toys.
“I’m fine Max, I’m not dying.” Just pregnant, she thought.
“Which doctor did you go see? The primary or-”There was a small crash, and pieces of Lego scattered on the floor. Nik started picking up the large Lego’s that had fallen all over the floor, getting the fallen Lego’s out from under the couch was going to be annoying.
“My OBGYN, she says everything is fine. She’s putting me on some vitamin supplements, and I can pick them up within the week.”
“Vitamin supplements,” Max said with a small pause. “But the only time you are on those is when-” He cut himself off.
Max took a look at her, a long good look. And then she saw his eyes go a little wide. “But you haven’t had, not with…”
Max sounded just as shocked as she felt right now. She didn’t need to say the word pregnant for him to know that she was. He seemed to know her body well enough to not have to say anything else.
“You can say it Max, morning sickness.”
“What’s morning sickness?” Nico asked as he looked up from his coloring book.
“Mommy wasn’t feeling good this morning.” She answered. "So my tummy was upset."
“Are you sick Mama?”
“No Nico, I’m not sick.”
Neither her or Max say anything else about it until the kids have all gone to bed. Niki and Nik are in their shared room fast asleep and Nico is in his room with Sassy asleep on the other pillow at the edge of his bed with Jimmy lounging in the cat tree in the corner of Nico's room.
Max went into his "office" after they had put Nico to bed. She walks to the next room over from Nico's room to see Max sitting in his sim rig but the computer screen is turned off and his legs are up in his seat. She'll never understand how he can find laying in there comfortable.
She pulls up the rolling desk chair up to him as he's just scrolling on his phone. She slightly peaks over his shoulder to see him looking at a picture of what looks like her sonogram picture from earlier in the day.
"Dr. Casse sent this to my email. Congratulations Max! It said." He leans his head further back to look at her.
She so badly wants to tell him that she thinks that they're having a girl this time. This pregnancy feels different even if she is only eight weeks along.
"Do you think it's a girl?" He slowly asks as if he's afraid she'll say no.
"Yeah Max, I think it is."
He reaches for her and presses a kiss to her forehead. She knows how much Max wants a daughter, and although her body has no say in that, it's a little reassuring to know that her body is giving her signs early on that this may very well be happening.
"Just don't get upset if it isn't." She tells him. She doesn't want to get his hopes up if it turns out to be another boy.
He doesn't say anything to that because they both know it'll be a lie. He moves out of the chair and takes her hand so they can walk out of the room together.
Max helps her out of her pencil skirt by undoing the zipper, the black fabric falls from her body. She moved to pull off the red blouse, and then remembers that she left her shoes by the couch when she came home. Oh well, she can put them back in her closet in the morning. She collects her clothes and puts them in the hamper in her closet and instead of reaching for a pair of sweats she goes to Max's closet and pulls out one of his t-shirts to sleep in.
When she steps out of the closet Max is sitting on the edge of the bed turning his wedding band around his finger. She steps closer to him and then moves her fingers into his hair. He drops his hands and then presses his head into her abdomen.
"I know we used to joke that we couldn't control what gender the baby was but I really want this. I want a little girl that looks like you running around the house, I want to paint a bedroom pink with my own two hands. I want…" He trails off dropping his arms around her thighs, pulling her in closer.
For all the children that they have, to Max; their family wasn't complete without them having a daughter.
"If we're lucky we'll be able to find out if it's a girl by my next appointment." She muttered.
“Which is in?” He pulled away slightly.
“Four weeks, but it could be a little longer.” Max gave her a nod and then pulled her into bed with him.
"I don't care if I have to miss races or something else, I'm going to be there when we find out what we're having." Max promised as he buried his face into her neck. She's going to hold him to it.

June 26, 2028
Today her and Max were going to her 20 week appointment.
The boys would be with Sylvie while her and Max were at the doctor and Max had made reservations for them to go to lunch afterwards, just the two of them. The last time her and Max went to her last appointment the baby wasn’t in the right position to see the gender, Max had been disappointed that he would have to wait a little longer to find out what they were having.
So Max was going to go with her again today to see if they could finally see the gender.
“I can drive.” She offered taking the keys as they walked to Max’s black Audi.
He just pulled them from her fingers and then opened the passenger side door waiting for her to get in. She gave him a smile and then stepped inside of the car.
The drive over to Dr. Casse’s office was quiet, there was the local pop station playing on the radio before pulling up to the building where the doctor’s office was.
Her and Max sat in the car for a few minutes, “We can wait to find out next time.” She said.
Max just shook his head no. “I have something planned for us after. When the doctor asks, we’ll just have them put the results in an envelope. I want to wait until we get home to find out.”
She nodded at Max. He was obviously more nervous about this than she was.
They had gone up to Dr. Casse’s office and waited to be called into the exam room. The nurse called them back into one of the exam rooms and then took Y/N’s blood pressure, and a few other basic tests to make sure that she was healthy.
“She’ll be right in.” The nurse said. “She’s just finishing up with another patient.”
She gave the nurse a nod, and then felt Max reach for her hand after the nurse stepped out of the room. For someone who could handle high pressure situations while he was at work, Y/N could tell how nervous Max was right now.
She gave his hand a firm squeeze back before the petite blonde doctor entered the room looking at both of them.
The doctor ran over a few things, said that her vitals look good and was in the clear for a lot of the risks that could occur in the early stages of being pregnant.
“You're still only in your second trimester but your tests appear normal so as of right now, I have no concerns, just keep to your vitamins, and keep off the caffeine."
Y/N nodded at the doctor and Max’s grip on her hand loosened a little bit.
“Now, ready to see if we can find out the gender today?”
Both her and Max nodded.
Dr. Casse wheeled over the ultrasound machine. “Now have you guys decided how you want to find out? Piece of paper, me just telling you?”
“The paper, we want to be home when we find out.”
The doctor nodded and placed some of the cool gel on the wand. Y/N did her best to not flinch from the cold feeling.
“Everything is looking good in there. I would say that the baby is about the size of a banana right now, and I can see the gender so I’ll write it down for you and put it in an envelope so you can find out when you get home.”
Max’s shoulders seemed to drop a little at the doctor's words.
“Do you want a few updated sonogram pictures?” Both her and Max nodded.
From there the doctor gave Y/N a towel to wipe off the gel and let her get re-dressed.
“Are you still up for food?” Max asked.
“Yeah,” Y/N’s nerves about the baby’s gender hadn’t gone down but Max seemed a little more calm so she knew that she could eat something.
“I made reservations at Miramar Plage, it’s a bit of a drive.”
“It’s perfect Max,” Miramar Plage was where she and Max went on a date the first time that she flew out to Monaco to see him. It was right on the beach and they had a great menu from what she could remember.
“I was thinking about maybe walking into a store or two, pick out something for the baby.” He said as she moved to put her dress and shoes back on. She tried to slide her feet in but couldn’t do up the straps so Max went down on his knees and did them up for her.
“Yeah we can, I can message Renaldo and maybe we can get something from baby Dior. I still need to send Daniel’s wife a gift since we couldn’t go to her baby shower.” Renaldo was the sales associate that worked at the Dior store in Cannes. They normally had a better selection of pieces during the summer months than at the store in Monaco.
“You’ll pick something nice that I’m sure they will love.” Daniel and his wife just had a son a few months ago and they couldn’t come to the baby shower because Niki had gotten a nasty cold that they didn’t want to spread to anyone else.
The doctor handed over the white envelope and let them know that the pictures were also inside.
From there she and Max made the 1 hour drive to Miramar Plage in Cannes. Y/N had messaged Renaldo through WhatsApp and let him know that she would be coming into the store today to look at some baby clothes.
He texted her back with a thumbs up emoji and a see you when you get here.
So she and Max went to lunch, Max had steak and she had eggplant pasta.
“This is the last one?” Max asked her after finishing the last bite of his steak.
She immediately looked down at her growing bump. “Yeah, I think this is that last one.”
Four kids in 8 years was enough.
“Now, why do you want to drag me shopping? You hate shopping.”
Max slightly shook his head. “I hate shopping for me, I like shopping for you.”
She just took a sip of her water. Max always did a good job when it came to shopping for her. All she had to do was look down at her engagement ring for the proof.
“Is that why we’re going to Dior? So you can pick something out for me?” She asked.
Max gave her a shrug and then caught the waiter's attention to ask for the check.
They were back in the car in the next half-an hour. Max had re-parked the car so they could end up walking into the stores along the Bd de la Croisette. They eventually made it into Dior after Max started to complain that his feet were hurting after she had him walk into a few other stores.
She let Max find a seat, and they were immediately offered water and some snakes before Y/N saw Renaldo come out of the back room. She gave the Spaniard sales associate a wave.
“I’ll be back.” she said to Max, noticing that he took the white envelope with the gender results out of her purse and stuffed them into the back pocket of his jeans.
She walked over to the section of the store where they had all of the baby Dior clothes for boys. She saw a pair of toddler size sneakers and a little zip up hoodie that she thought would be perfect for Daniel’s son David.
She wandered around the store for a few more minutes looking at the new limited edition Lady Dior bags that they had before going back to Max with the items that she had picked out for David.
Renaldo had just walked away from where Max had been sitting to see him now at the counter looking at the women’s accessories.
“Find anything?” She said walking up to him.
Max turned to look at her. “Yes, but it’s a surprise when we get home.”
What could Max’s surprise be? They still hadn’t opened the gender results for the baby.
Renaldo came back out of the back room with a white box that had a Dior ribbon around it. What did Max just spend money on? She thought.
“Pink if it’s a girl and blue if it’s a boy.” The sales associate said to them both. He was buying her a bag to find out the gender of the baby.
Max paid for her mystery bag and the clothes for David before they were back in the car on the way home. The 1 hour drive back to the house seemed to go by rather fast. They were pulling up to the driveway and the warm Monaco air seemed to finally hit her when they were walking inside of the house. Max had the bags in his hands.
The house was quiet, the only sound being the low hum of the air conditioner.
They looked into the living room to see toys spread over the large couch and the doors open to the backyard. Nico was running around kicking his soccer ball while it looked like Niki was trying and failing to chase after his older brother. Sylvie was sitting on her phone while it looked like Nik was taking a nap on the couch next to her.
Y/N walked out into the backyard and sat on the couch next to Nik. Sylvie looked up from her phone and then to her.
“How was your appointment?” She asked.
“It was good.” Y/N replied.
Max had come out a few moments later, changed out of his jeans into athletic shorts and walked towards Nico and Niki to play with them for a bit.
“Did you find out if it is a boy or a girl?”
“Not yet. Max took me to Dior to pick out a few things, and set it up so the color of the bag he got me matches the gender of the baby.”
“Aww that is very sweet.”
They had all stayed outside for a while longer before Nico started to complain that he was hungry. Max had carried Nik inside while Sylvie had taken the toys back inside and Y/N started making an early dinner.
“Are you staying for dinner Sylvie?” Y/N asked.
“No, I have plans with Pierre. He’s taking me out but let me know when you open up the box.”
“Of course.”
“Just don’t tell Pierre, there is a bet about the gender on the grid group chat.” Max replied before Sylvie reached for her bag and said goodbye to the kids.
“Does that mean that if I get a sister, her room is going to be where Papa’s office is?” Nico asked, watching as Y/N made dinner.
“Well, Nico. Probably not.” Y/N said before Max took over speaking.
“Your Mama and I were thinking that we would move all your furniture into the room that Oma stays in when she visits and the new baby could have your room.”
“But Oma’s room is so much bigger than mine and it’s not even on the same floor.”
“You are the oldest Nico, and the new baby will have to sleep on the same floor as Papa and I, we can’t just leave the baby anywhere.” Y/N was hoping that her and Max didn’t need to tell him that he was getting bigger and it may be a good idea for him to have a little more independence around the house. He was good about making his own bed, cleaning up after the cats, and playing with his brothers without being rough with them. He had earned it.
“Can I get a new bed, or a hot wheels track on my walls like Greyson Archibald?” Nico started to ask while bring up one of the kids in his class.
“We’ll see. Papa and I still have to pay off the yacht, and we’re also building the guest house so Auntie Vic and Uncle Tom can stay when they visit.” Her and Max had a lot of money put into projects around the house.
“Okay,” Nico slowly said, “But can I at least choose the paint in my room. I don’t like the light blue anymore.”
“Sure!” Max answered before looking over at Y/N. What had they just done?
Everything was winding down for them. Nico was planning to watch a movie with Niki, they got into a fight about which one to watch.
“Woody!” Niki yelled, shoving the plush toy into his older brother's face.
“Nuhu, Star Wars. I want to see Luke take on Darth Vader!”
“Nico, can you let him watch Toy Story? He needs to go to bed before you.” Y/N asked.
“But Papa and I are watching them together.”
“I know, but he’ll fall asleep faster if you let him watch.” She looked at Niki and he was already rubbing his eyes. “After that you and Papa can watch Star Wars.”
Nico eventually relented. The kids were watching the movie and her and Max went into the kitchen to open the box that they had gotten at Dior.
“I think you should open it.” She said moving the box closer to Max.
“No, mijn leeuwin. It’s for you. You should open it.” He said moving the box closer to her.
Y/N moved to pull the ribbon from the box and saw a note on a white card,
Congratulations on your exciting news y/n!
- Love, The Dior Cannes Team
She let the ribbon fall away from the box and then opened it, the crisp white tissue paper against her fingers. She undid the sticker that held the tissue paper together and then started to move it away from the white dust bag in the box.
She moved her hand into the white bag and started to pull the handbag out when she saw the edge of a twilly peaking out in pastel purple and… pink. She lifted the bag out further to see a pink Lady Dior bag with its gold hardware giving off a nice shimmer in the low lighting of the kitchen.
“Max,” Is all she can say before he’s pulling her in closer to him. His lips are on hers within a few seconds and it feels like he’s trying to devour her. His hands on her hips and brushing over her hair.
“Thank you,” She hears him say when he starts to pull away from her. His hands go to her abdomen running over the growing bump. She moves her arms around his neck and presses a few quick kisses to his lips.
She shakes her head at his words. She didn’t do anything, this was all him. “You wanted this Max. You wanted her.”
She looks at him to see a few tears spilling from his eyes. He moves his head onto her shoulder.
“I did, I wanted our little girl.” He muttered into her hair.
Y/N let her own tears start to fall, she had been so concerned that if they didn’t have a girl Max would react horribly. But know that she knows they’re having a girl. She’s letting herself finally be happy with the result.
She pulls away from him just a bit and starts to laugh. “Be ready to have a lot more pink in your life.”
He lets out a quick breath, “Well, I did ask for this.” with a small shrug of his shoulders. She nods back at him and then he kisses her cheek with his hands settling on her hips.
She knows that they have more to talk about. Like a name, and who the baby’s god parents are going to be, maybe it’s time to fulfill Lando’s wish of being a god parent. But for now she’ll enjoy the moment.
Her and Max leave the unpacked box and bag on the counter and join their other children in the living room.
“Star Wars!” Nico yells as her and Max move to sit on the couch.
She knows that their family will be complete by the end of the year, she can feel it.

November 19 - 20, 2028
“Grandma GG!” Nico said, running up to Geri as her and Christian walked through the door of the house.
“Nico,” She greeted the boy, opening her arms for him. She hugged him and her eyes darted around the room for the other two boys that were in the house.
Geri had let Nico go and then he ran to Christian for a hug. “I missed you Grandpa.”
Christian gave Nico a hug back. “Missed you too,” Christian said even though he had seen Nico a couple weeks ago.
“Where are the other kids?” The redhead had asked you.
You had led Geri into the living room to see Niki playing with a set of building blocks, and Nik was taking a nap in his swing.
“Oh Y/N, they’re precious. Can’t believe that you're pregnant with one more.” She said taking a seat on the couch that was pressed against the windows.
“The last one,” After finding out that you and Max were having a girl, you had both agreed that four kids was enough.
“You excited to have a girl?” “A bit, Max seems more excited than me.”
“When are you due again?”
“Next week on Wednesday. The last race is on Sunday, three days after.”
“You guys always cut it close when the season ends or breaks happen.” Y/N was always grateful that her pregnancies seemed to find an off way of aligning with Max’s schedule somehow.
“I feel bad taking him away from you, Y/N.” Christian said, taking a seat on the couch. “Can always tell Max to stay home and we can call up one of the other drivers from the junior team? I’m sure Yuki wouldn’t mind having a go in Max’s car for the weekend.”
“Leave my wife out of this Christian, she’s too close to her due date.” Max said, handing Christain a beer.
“I’m just saying, in case something happens. We’ve already won another Constructors, I am more than happy for Oscar to take the Drivers Championship this year.”
It was odd to hear Christian be so content with Max not possibly winning this year's drivers championship.
“And let Red Bull’s arch nemesis Zac Brown win? Surprising,” Y/N said with a laugh.
“Well, we’ll see what happens.” It was only after 2024 that the McLaren and Red Bull rivalry on track started to heat up. Max was still friends with Oscar and Lando when there weren’t races going on.
“Grandpa, can you play cars with me?” Nico asked, holding out a little red Aston Martin.
“Sure, but just until your Mum has dinner ready.” Christian replied before following Nico into his “new” bedroom.
“Oh Y/N, can I see the baby's room now that it’s complete? I know you’ve sent me some pictures.”
“Yes, mijn leeuwin, you should show her,” Max suggested. Y/N knew how proud Max was of painting the walls and putting all of the furniture together by himself before the baby got here. “I can watch Nik and then take the food out when it deeps.”
Geri helped Y/N down the stairs before walking into the baby’s room.
Y/N moved to sit in the rocking chair that had been moved out of Niki and Nik’s room into here after Max had finished painting the walls a light pastel pink that went with the white furniture.
“I miss this stuff from when Bluebell was little,” Geri said, holding up a small pair of baby Christian Louboutin’s that had been gifted to them from one of Y/N’s colleges.
“You should have seen some of the things Max and I returned a few months ago.”
“Anything crazy?” Geri asked, straightening the blanket that was hung over the side of the crib.
“One of the traders that works on the same floor as me got us a fine china set from Hermés for her. That was an immediate return,” She knew all too well that it would be cute to have but would never get used and if it was would need to be hand washed.
“What? What do they think you're going to use that for?” Geri asked.
“No idea,” Y/N said with a laugh and then laid her hand over her bump to feel a kick from the baby.
“Max did a really good job in here. I can tell how excited he is.” Y/N took another look around the room to all of the baby clothes hung in the closet, the plush pink horse in the crib. Max took so much pride in the time that he got to spend here getting it ready for their daughter.
“Yeah, he’s really excited. I think he’s really thinking about not going to the race in case I go into labor early.”
Geri gave her a small hug. “These things happen when they need to. Don’t stress about it without a reason.”
Her and Geri walked back upstairs to Max pulling the lasagna out of the oven and setting it on the dining room table.
“Boys, food is ready!” Max yelled into the living room.
Nico and Niki came walking in. Christian was holding Nik who was sleepily rubbing at his eyes.
“Mama,” Niki said, reaching for her. “Want to sit with Papa.”
She helped Niki over to the table and settled him so he could sit in one of the chairs by himself. Everyone was starting to sit down while Max moved to get Nik’s food out of the fridge, it was pureed squash.
Nico and Niki were eating through the lasagna, Max would blow on a piece of the lasagna for Niki however more of it just ended up on his shirt then in his mouth.
Geri had offered to go and change Niki out of his ruined clothes while Max cleared the table. Christian was showing Nico a video on his phone about the new kid who would be taking the F2 seat for Red Bull this year.
“Do you want coffee or something?” Y/N asked as if she was getting ready to move from her seat.
“I can put the kettle on, don’t worry Y/N” Geri said walking back into the kitchen with Niki already in his pajamas.
Y/N watched as Geri insisted on filling the kettle with water and set it to boil.
Max and Christian had disappeared downstairs and Geri had gone to the restroom. The kettle finally sang when it was boiling hot, Y/N had slowly moved from her chair and turned the stove off. She left the kettle where it was and reached for the brawer where all of the coffee and tea was.
She had just started to reach into the cabinet above to grab cups as the all too familiar pain filled her abdomen. Braxton Hicks, she knew the drill. She took a few deep breaths and it seemed to fade away.
She was able to get another two mugs down before Geri rejoined her in the kitchen.
“Sweetheart, you doing okay?” She asked as she moved closer to Y/N.
“Braxton Hicks, I’ll be fine.” Y/N replied, trying to shake the feeling off.
Eventually Geri filled her mug with some herbal tea and lemon from the trees in the backyard.
“I know, I just think that the times are off. When I go into the corner, I’m supposed to be able to go flat out and it’s not giving that.” Y/N heard Max telling Christian.
Her and Geri looked at each other and shared a smile.
“Well, I’m sure you’ve told GP.” Christian started to say. “See, so we’ll wait until we're at the track on Friday, I’m sure the team at the factory also saw the numbers and are working on a solution.”
“It just could be better is all I’m saying.”
“I know Max.” Christian said as they re-entered the kitchen.
Y/N had sat down and Niki had moved to rest his head against her thigh. Her and Geri both made it through a cup of tea before sitting up straight wasn’t comfortable anymore. Max was first to offer to help her go to the living room.
“Max, I'm fine.” she said, holding her back and took a few steps forward.
A few minutes later Geri had followed Y/N to the living room to see her standing in a puddle of amniotic fluid. Looks like her water just broke.
“I’ll get Max.” Geri had said after setting the cups down on the closest table.
About half an hour later Christian and Geri were still at the house saying that they would stay the night and put the boys to bed.
“We’ll come by the hospital in the morning,” Christian said as Max went to put Y/N’s bag in the car.
“We appreciate this.” Max said.
“It’s what family does Max. Now go be with your wife, because the moment your daughter is born, it’s going to change your whole world.” Christian patted Max on the back as Geri had helped Y/N into the car.
It was two hours later that they were already at the hospital still waiting to hear from a part of the medical staff and Y/N was squeezing his hand every minute or two.
“You doing okay?” Max asked
She shook her head no.
“Want me to get a nurse? I know they checked you over and they said you’re only a few centimeters dilated-" Max didn’t get to finish his sentence before Y/N let out a loud wimper. Max immediately moved out of his seat towards where the nurses desk was.
“I’ll be right back.” He said and kissed her sweaty forehead.
Max moved up to a nurse, “Hi, my wife is in labor and I was wondering if I could get an update on her epidural?”
The nurse gave him a questioning look before she looked to where Y/N was sitting. “Oh, umm let me go check if the anesthesiologist is ready to give it to her and if they are we’ll get her into a room for delivery prep.”
Max gave her a nod back and then walked back to Y/N.
“So?” She asked, looking up at him.
“They’re waiting for the anesthesiologist.” She nodded at him and then dropped her head to his shoulder.
It took another half an hour before they were ushered into a room and did another check.
“5 centimeters, halfway there. Looks like you’re ready for the epidural.” The anesthesiologist said and moved to reach for a needle. Max kept holding Y/N’s hand and saw her try to stop herself from moving forward from the needle going into her skin.
“Better?” He asked her. She still shook her head no.
“Give it about 10 to 15 minutes, it should start to dissipate." One of the nurses said.
Max kept an eye on his watch and 30 minutes had passed, Y/N had turned onto her side. A nurse had come in a few minutes ago and checked her and found out that she was fully dilated and ready to start pushing.
“Max,” he heard her whimper. She looked at him and reached for his hand. “Get a nurse.”
Max gave her a nod. He let go of her hand despite the fact that he felt like he shouldn’t.
“Can I get some help? My wife seems to be in pain.”
A nurse looked into the room, “Has she been given an epidural?”
“Yes, but she-” He had been cut off.
“Give it a bit more. She could just be experiencing some back pain.”
“It’s been 30 minutes since she got it, and she’s already in labor.”
Two nurses shared a look before one of them reached for a phone and started to talk to someone.
“Ahh!” Max heard coming from Y/N’s room before another nurse walked in to see her holding her stomach. The first thing a nurse did was look at a monitor to see the read out on a machine.
“SHIT!” The nurse said before pressing a button.
It was like a haze had set over Y/N’s room before he heard something that made his stomach drop and feel unbearably heavy.
“The baby’s heart rate is dropping!” He heard being yelled in the room.
WHAT? He thought. Her heart rate was dropping? They needed to do something, NOW!
“Get the father out of here, she needs to deliver now and get the baby out so the heart rate doesn’t drop anymore. Her contractions are putting her body under more stress.”
Max could only stand there before a nurse made him leave the room.
“Mr. Verstappen,” He heard muffled in his ears. “We’re going to do… everything that we can to make sure that they’re both healthy.” The nurse kept talking to him as he heard Y/N still yelling as he was led into the waiting room of the maternity ward.
Max tried his best to nod at the nurse before being left in the waiting room.

It had been a long 5 hours after Max had been rushed out of Y/N’s delivery room after complaining to one of the nurses that something was wrong with his wife. Something had gone wrong while she had been trying to deliver the baby. The nurse had pulled Max out of the room trying to calm him down while he could hear Y/N in pain.
He had been standing in the hallway of the maternity ward in the light blue scrubs they had given to him, pacing, and occasionally checking his phone.
After 2 hours, he had called his mom asking her not to bring the boys to the hospital yet. He wanted to wait for the doctors to come out and tell him what was going on with his wife. Sophie, however, insisted that she be with him, and let Christian and Geri watch over the boys while she was with her son.
She showed up a few minutes ago and watched as Max wandered the hallway waiting to hear any news.
“Mr. Verstappen.” He heard in his native Dutch.
Max perked his head up to see Y/N’s doctor standing before him in what looked like relatively clean scrubs.
“Yes?”
“I just wanted to let you know that your wife is fine.” The words made Max’s chest deflate letting out a big breath. “While the birth was going on, we found out that the epidural hadn’t worked on her, putting her under stress and making the baby’s heart rate drop. So, your wife had to deliver naturally.”
“They okay?” His mom asked.
Max couldn’t think. There had been a chance that he could have lost you and the baby. He couldn’t imagine it. Not just him losing you but the boys as well.
“Both mother and baby are doing well. We had a small scare, but they’re both healthy. I can take you back to see them.”
Max nodded before following the doctor down the hall. They ended up at a wooden door with a window that peaked into the room. Max could barely make out what you looked like.
“Max.” His mother said. He looked back at her before she gave him a hug to try to calm him down before he walked into the room. His mother spoke into his ear, “Try to remember that she’s okay, they both are.”
Max pulled the handle of the door slowly walking into the room. Y/N was slightly sitting up in bed with a bundle of blankets on her chest. He made slow tentative steps towards the bed, pulling the empty chair to your side so he could sit next to you.
He dropped his head next to your lap and could feel one of your hands start to run through his hair. Max took a few small, fast breaths taking in the sterile smell of detergent and soap on the sheets. He lifted his head up to see her holding a bundle of blankets with a small pink cap peeking out from the bundle.
“You’re so strong.” He stuttered out as he sat by your side. He reached out and laid his hand over yours that covered part of the baby‘s back.
“I wasn’t the first two times?” You joked. He did his best to chuckle along, pushing the fear of losing you away. He felt terrified hearing your screams in the hallway from the pain.
Max couldn’t help but marvel at the bundle of blankets against your chest. Every time that another child of his came into the world it felt surreal.
“Always, mijn leewin. You are always strong.” Moving to rest his head against your shoulder. He would have tried to climb into the hospital bed with you but didn’t want to move the baby in your arms.
“Do you want to hold her?” You asked him. He could see that you were making a move to pass her over.
Max was careful about taking the baby from you. He placed her into the crook of his arm, holding her head up with his hand. He had a daughter.
Max looked up at Sophie to see a tear run down her cheek.
“Finally a girl in the family?” She asked in English. You nodded at her before the sound of a knock came from outside of the door.
It was the doctor here to check on you. She went over the epidural scare that had happened, and said that you were lucky to still have the local anesthesia in your system.
“Your husband did a great job after you told him that you could feel that the epidural wasn’t working. Went straight to a nurse, we caught that your daughter’s heart rate was dropping and everything ran smoothly after. We were able to deliver her with no complications.” Max saw you reach over for his hand. He moved the baby down a bit, and then clasped your hands together. He could feel your wedding band on your finger, and ran one of his fingers over it. He had never been more grateful for the light almost biting feeling of the diamonds pressing into his skin more than he was now.
Max could feel his mother’s eyes on him but said nothing to her. He thanked the doctor for coming in to check on you.
“I’m just happy that you’re both okay.” He said holding the baby closer to his chest. “I was so worried when they told me that her heart rate had dropped.”
Max looked down at their daughter.
“She was worth it Max, all the pain made it worth it.”
Max leaned up and kissed Y/N on the lips muttering a silent Thank You.
“Well, I’ll leave you guys.” The doctor said taking the folder with her. “You have a fighter on your hands.” She motioned to the bundle in Max’s arms.
Max gave the doctor half a smile back. He saw Y/N leaning back into her pillow more with a small smile spreading over her lips.
“Mum?” Max asked. “Want to hold your granddaughter?"
Sophie shifted forward, standing a little straighter and then walked closer to Max.
“I would love to.” She said.
Max moved out of the chair, and then Sophie sat down in it before placing the baby in her waiting arms.
“Halo, schetje.” The little girl had seemed to find a way of moving her hand out of the bundle and Sophie’s hand brushed hers.
Max had been standing on the other side of the bed watching his mother and his daughter before placing his hand on Y/N’s shoulder. He was lucky to be surrounded by such strong women in his life.
“Max,” Y/N said.
“Hmm?” He hummed in question.
“I think you should pick her name.” Max’s eyebrows went up at her words. She wanted him to pick her name.
Max gave himself a few minutes trying to run through all of the possible names and combinations that they discussed, and there was one configuration that he kind of liked.
“Nicole?” He said with a slight question in his voice. “Nicole Victoria Sonja.” He got out a little clearer.
When they had talked about names originally Max had brought up the idea of having her be named after either his sister or his mum. It took looking at Nicole to know that he wanted to name her after both of them but knew that his mother would never accept it. She would say it was too much, so he would give his daughter the closest thing to it.
“I think it’s perfect.” He heard his wife say.
Max gave her a smile and moved to sit on the edge of her bed so he could watch his mother and daughter while holding his wife’s hand. Soon Nicole would be able to meet the rest of her family in her brothers, other grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins. For now, he was happy to just be sitting in the hospital room after the earlier stressful hours of this morning.
