Dnd Stories and Resources Reblogged
29K posts
Icon made by the wonderful lynaiss --- Dungeons and Dragons and Tabletop games oh my! Resources and stories and other cool nerdy stuff. Lots of Critical Role and ramblings about my own campaigns. I tag CR spoilers for an episode until the next one airs. I try to reblog art & images with image ID's, but if there isn't one check the notes (might have been added after I queued the post in question). Side blog run by uncultureddoubloon

It had almost escaped my notice that it is now May, the month that dooms to a heartbroken death 99% of characters from folk ballads. So, if you suspect you may be a character from a folk ballad, for your own safety:
don’t fall in love, don’t go by the river, don’t go to the sea, don’t talk to sailors, don’t gamble, don’t ramble, don’t go North, don’t go North-West, don’t stand in the wind, don’t dance with anyone named Sally, Sue, Mary, Ann, or Barbara, don’t go to the pub (but if you do go to the pub at least don’t drink, and if you do drink at least pay for your own drink, and if you are absolutely broke and have to let someone else pay for your drink then at the very least do try not to forget to toast everyone you know whom you think might be there very loudly and possibly multiple times), don’t lend money, don’t borrow money, don’t wish you had more money, don’t make plans to make more money, don’t start working for a new employer, absolutely do believe anyone who says they will try to kill you, curse you, or maim you, absolutely do believe anyone who says you might die, turn down every invitation to go a-hunting, horse-riding, or a-courting, be wary of flute players you meet on your path, don’t dance with satanic men in black coats, don’t marry off your daughters to the first man who’ll have them, and don’t promise your true love any herbs you can’t readily plant and gather in your own garden.
There. That should just about cover you for 31 days. Heed the warnings and you may have a chance to last the month. Good luck.

I'm early to this episode but, one of my favourite things about The Mighty Nein as a campaign is how... poignant and relevant it all feels? Like, we get about 10 episodes in before they're involved in a plot to usurp a corrupt politician (joined by fellow working class NPCs, not hired by a guild or someone powerful), 12 episodes before they witness a supposed terrorist attack (importantly from the ground as civilians, not as heroes), and 13 before they realise first-hand that not choosing sides is choosing to let the empire win (when they leave the Kryn soldier in the sewer to escape for himself, then watch his body be paraded through the streets later)
This is what I mean when I say The Mighty Nein had consequences. This campaign was near perfect for giving them a great amount of agency and impact on the world around them, while also acting as its own force that will continue to plough forward without them if they don't make a choice
I get that Vox Machina and Bell's Hells involved a lot of tyrants and politics, but to me they feel much more fantastical and easier to distance from reality--which is fine, they're different campaigns with different moods. But The Mighty Nein has always felt more down in the weeds of it all for me, which is part of what makes it so great to me

"If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing badly."
This has fundamentally changed how I view my work, whether that's writing, or cleaning or just taking care of myself. Thank you Granny Weatherwax

Given how much tumblr likes both leverage and days of the week, kind of surprised this isn’t a thing. Happy no-stabbing Wednesday y’all.

I think what I love most about mythology is that the “Trickster God/Spirit” is an archetypical character found in almost every body of folklore. It’s like “Oh, here’s our God of the Sun, our God of the Sea, our God of Fertility, and our God of Being A Wretched Little Gremlin Who Causes Problems On Purpose”

Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating

that is soooooooooo fuckin funny. this ytbr is trying to discuss the themes and story structure of Night Watch, but it so CLEARLY resonates with everything that's been going on for the past few months, that he had to pause to state to the camera that this was NOT a commentary on current events, that it was NOT him discussing allegories, that he is ONLY trying to discuss the book
🤣🤣🤣🤣
that being said, if you're curious about why that is because you haven't read Night Watch by Terry Pratchett, I HIGHLY suggest you read it because man it is on the fucking nose (just sayin')

I'm writing up a very long answer to a question that will take some time and thought but in doing so I think I've realized that a lot of people really dislike Sam and Travis's characters for two reasons. The first is the obvious monkey-ladder experiment case, that Grog and Scanlan became favorites of the most dudebro types due to being Men who Fucked and Weren't Openly Sad or Played By a Queer Person (despite them both being far more than that) and so people who did not understand that one's opinions may at times overlap with those of someone who sucks took a reactionary turn against that. The second is that they both tend to, even (or perhaps especially) with their less-serious characters, skewer certain attitudes and particularly the one of "you should never ask for help or get over your resentments" and I think seeing that attitude so thoroughly mocked really pisses a lot of people off, and so they're like "oh well it's a stupid joke character, I wish the players took the game seriously" and it's like do you not recall that court jesters were the one person who could say whatever the fuck they wanted, my good bitch.
