Welcome!
This webpage consists of my recent work in UCSB’s Multimedia Writing class in the Winter quarter of 2019. Along with my featured projects are some personal musings into the thought and design process that each work went through, as well as the challenges I experiences and why I chose to feature a project.
In retrospect, the personal growth that I experienced throughout the quarter was a direct result of reaching for multi-modality in most of my projects. My background is primarily focused on graphic and print design (consequentially, I know Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator the best). My strengths are in creating magazine/yearbook spreads, infographics, and typography. However, delving into how to utilize multi-modality helped expand my software knowledge to Vegas Movie Editor, After Effects, and online hosting platforms.
As a Communication student, I viewed this course as a valuable way to craft compelling arguments with multiple channels and direct, targeted messages. Practicing communication through visual, interactive, and audio mediums allow you to combine the power of human experience into a single project. I’ve learned throughout the year in both the course and my work that a project is never truly finished. As in my freelance and previous works, I spent each project focusing on how I could hone my existing knowledge of basic design principles of negative space, color, and effective type.

The Final
I had a lot of big ideas for the final multimodal project, but I was unfortunately not able to gather, learn, and produce all the required assets that would have fleshed out the project to its fullest potential. I had spent a weekend animating sequences for Jack/Afrojack to move their limbs and walk teleport around, but found it far too time consuming and not worth my effort.
Creating custom assets is especially a hassle when compared to graphic design services like Canva and Adobe Spark, but I hope the personal touch/effort really shines through in my stylistic choices. As shown in the video, this project was designed to mimic a video game (if I had the skills, I would have created a video game experience for this project). I faced numerous limitations in finding appropriate online platforms to host this multimodal project, and found that many failed to support much beyond still images, embedded videos, and an overly basic interface.
If they worked, my webpage would also feature space-themed music and have fading stars and flying comets in the background, instead of the static-black background. I think the inclusion of these two visual and auditory stimulants would have elevated this project even further. Overall, I am a proud creator of Jack the Lumberjack and Afrojack the robot. I may revisit this project and re-utilize many of the assets I created for this.

The Video
I view this project as an important stepping stone that led me to creating more multimodal experiences for my final research project. This video, edited on Vegas Pro 16.0, reminded me how tedious and time-consuming video editing can really be. The majority of the work was put into the first half of the video, matching the audio to text in both speech and music. I had an extremely difficult time finding royalty-free and creative commons video assets and had to compromise for many of the nature shots.
I had originally stretched and prolonged some sections of the video just to meet the 3 minute mark; I now wish I had made the pacing of the video faster, particularly during the second and third parts of the video. I had run out of creative ideas besides superimposing bold text and carried it throughout the length of the clip (I wish I incorporated other visual and audio cues). However, as the first 3-minute video I have had to create, I was especially pleased with the work I did with this video.

The Poster
This poster is a prime example of my work in exploring how color and shape can invoke specific emotions to set tone. My original color scheme for my LA poster was based off of a traditional sunny LA day (bright yellow, bold blues, and urban lights). However, the effects of multiple contrasting colors and multiple shapes created a crowded and difficult to navigate poster. I decided to cast a pinkish-sunset hue over the poster, which sets a sense of serenity and hope.
As the color scheme in this work consists of only a few colors and gradients, the shapes and how they interact (with the composition) are the most important aspect of this piece. I struggled between staying true to the LA skyline and environment through featuring iconic skyscrapers and landmarks and aesthetically pleasing and spatially-aware compositions. I decided on the latter, which included adding clouds to the clear skies of LA and generic, but appropriate mountains and skyscrapers. An issue I experienced with this design was with spacing, as I struggled to fill up the entirety of the work without jarring emptiness.
Overall, I chose this project due to the consistency in verbal communication. I tend to start a project that goes off into different variations, but I believe this poster was able to keep the theme and message throughout the work. The gradients and large block text help create layering and a sense of depth in an otherwise flat image that I feel really lends a sense of a cartoon-y paradise city.

Closing Thoughts
Wow! This quarter has really been an enjoyable ride. I underestimated how much this course would allow me to practice my graphic design skills (which I haven’t used in a while) and challenged me to struggle with programs and fields that I was not familiar with. I valued the feedback that I received from friends, peers, and my instructor that helped me foster my communication skills. I met some great people and had a good amount of laughter and fun (which is more than I can say for any other class). For the first time, I found the classroom to be a place where creativity and valued and shared among the students and the professor.
