I work retail, and have for many years now. I'm not an easily fazed person and have a Talk No Shit, Take No Shit mentality. However, I also have a pretty intense anxiety disorder on top of other mental health issues and when I started 6+ years ago there were some customers who got to me.
So, to all the workers facing Karens and Kens out in the wild, here's my advice - cry.
If you have the type of relationships with your coworkers and managers that will support you, don't try to hold it in. Cry like the overworked, underpaid peon you are.
Nothing terrifies an asshole Karen like the indisputable proof that their actions/words are affecting you as a real live person. They feel perfectly entitled to cuss out a cashier over a wrong order/no cash policy/ face mask mandate but when that person starts to cry and asks them why they'd say such mean things? A whole other story, my friend.
There's no way to make that situation look good to the manager they demanded to speak with, either. My manager literally got a security guard fired for being so verbally abusive he made one of her employees cry.
This strategy has multiple benefits -
1. You're not standing there trying to pen up your emotions, crying is a great physical release for negative emotions and you may very well feel somewhat better afterwards.
2. The person who precipitated the situation is forced to not only see you as a person with feelings, but also has to confront the fact that their abuse has consequences beyond themselves.
3. It can actually give your higher-ups leverage to address these situations. 'They yelled at my employee' is one thing, but 'They yelled at my employee until they were in tears' is a waaaaay worse offense. A good manager can use that. Hell, it can get a security guard fired!
tl;dr: We live in a capitalist hell but we can work the system and cry at work to shame awful customers

Suddenly remembered that one time I was coming home from the Ren Faire dressed as OOT Zelda, and we stopped off to eat at iHop, and there was a dad with two little girls there. And mentally i was like 'hohoho perhaps the girls will be excited to see A Princess, as I would have at that age' but what happened instead was the dad saw me and his eyes went REALLY wide and he gasped and said "PRINCESS ZELDA??????"

as a fat person who's always clamoring for more interesting fat characters in media, I honestly think one of my all-time favorite depictions of a fat character is Jumba from the original Lilo and Stitch - both visually and personality wise
Tumblr media
from a design perspective, even though he's an alien, he has so many little anatomy quirks that make him a more believable fat character than many fat human designs in other media. I love the realistic sag and layering of the fat on his arms, the lack of neck definition, the rim of chub around his face and upper back, the way his back is rounded. his clothes pull taut and pinch in anatomically accurate places (e.g. shoulders are firmer = smoother outlines, the sides and back are squishier = bumpier outlines).
and he's stylized so well! all these great details boiled down to some simple shapes and pen strokes. IMO the Lilo and Stitch art style is extremely appealing - it's warm and clean and visually pleasing, but every character is super unique. Jumba isn't supposed to be pretty, but even though he's a very large, very fat, bald older guy who spends most of the movie in crop tops, the way he's stylized and staged makes it clear the audience is supposed to find him interesting to look at, and variably intimidating/cool/powerful/capable. he's often funny, but the physical aspect of his comedy is derived from being so hefty the other characters struggle to prevent him from barreling ahead and doing whatever he wants; being fat makes him come off more in control of the funny situations he gets into, not less. also, because the art style is what it is, a lot of his character acting also just makes him look kind of cute ... though that's universal across the cast
Tumblr media
I also really like the fact that his size clearly gives him both realistic advantages and realistic disadvantages. along with having a stronger sense of agency in the comedic scenes, his size in combination with his impulsivity also makes him a more intimidating antagonist. you never know what he's going to do, and his size makes it difficult for other characters to stop him when he's made up his mind. at the same time, it seems to take him longer to catch his breath, he sometimes grunts when moving around a lot to imply it takes more effort, and he clearly struggled to find clothes that fit him when putting together his disguise. I think it's awesome that the character's size impacts how he interacts with the world so much, and again, in relatable ways
Tumblr media
and personality wise, it is ALWAYS great to see fat characters portrayed as intelligent - not only is Jumba an accomplished scientist, he's also crafty and witty! a few quiet scenes imply a philosophical side, as he ponders on Stitch's existence and feelings as a living weapon. with Stitch explicitly being made in his own image to an extent, I'd argue there's even room to interpret some of the things he says about Stitch being hints to how he sees himself; we never learn much about Jumba's past, but it's clear he's a social misfit and strongly defiant. I don't think it's a stretch to assume some of what he said to Stitch about being a monster who can never belong anywhere was intended to read as projection (which makes it all the more heartwarming when both of them find a place to belong on Earth)
it's also a nice twist that toward the end, Jumba is the one who is unexpectedly compassionate toward Nani, while Pleakley tries to urge him to ignore her. again alluding to a level of emotional depth and intelligence that is often missing from even well-intentioned depictions of fat people. his character isn't even fully explored, and yet he's one of the most dynamic and interesting supporting characters in a movie full of fantastic characters. the audience is expected to find him fascinating and even sort of mysterious, and he is!
the sequels and spinoffs were more merchandise-driven franchise fluff for kids than the artsy direction of the original movie, but even so, I remember Jumba went on to become Lilo's lovable, amoral uncle figure, which I also thought was so fun as a kid. I love that they committed to the fact that he was more caring and compassionate than he seemed. not only was he a cool evil mad scientist character, but he was also eventually ... a friend ...
and he was even gay

With another roar, he sends a burst of red flame towards Kaida while slashing at her as he flies past. Circling around he lets out a snarl, and a concentrated beam of fire gets blasted their way.
"Stronger people than you have tried! THEY are gone, and I'm STILL HERE!"
Mystic Mayhem
Temple ruins are nothing knew in this world, but who built them is the mystery. One such temple exsits a few miles out of Republic City's borders. Hidden within at it's heart is rumored to be some relic or treasure of great power; a mask with great mystic properties.
Two strangers sneak away from the city, carefully as to not be spotted by anyone.
"This is the place? Looks ancient!"
His partner shushes him, looking behind them before addressing him. "This place is older than the Air Temples, and nobody knows who built it. Some say an ancient people who practiced magic built this place. There are stories that they could change shape, but those are just rumors."

Hachi listens closely, taking note of the bubonic plague. "Wait, that was grandpa's doing? That wiped out like, two-thirds of Europe!" His dad just shrugs, turning to Miwa. "Me fight her? It depends on her actions. If she invades my territory, then yes, I will intervene. She's more of a threat to Gojira than to me. Her kind evolved specifically to predate on Titans with high amounts of radiation, Titans like Gojira's kind. In fact, she's the parent of those parasites that invaded San Francisco not too long ago."
He takes not of the movement outside and smiles as he sees the herd of Qilin. "Majestic, aren't they? They're just one of many creatures that live here in the Celestial Realm. There are Phoenix', Celestial Toads, snakes, and that's just to name a few." One of the Qilin notices the group, and takes a few cautious steps foward, sniffing at them. It locks eyes with Miwa, then Hachi before turning to rejoin its herd.
"Never gets old."

"No. Humans at that point were little more than animals. To me, anyway. Buddha knew that humans would survive. Something about perseverance, I wasn't listening at the time." He pauses to clean out an ear, flicking away the mess he picked out. "Humans are unfortunately, survivors. They'll find ways to survive the worst nature has to throw at them. Except for the bubonic plague, that was my fathers work. He had a field day with that little experiment." He lets out a dark chuckle, and focused on the painting. "Indeed they are. During their younger years, they couldn't control their powers, so the Celestial Court sent them to me in hopes I could temper them into the gods they would one day become. Raijin had more difficulty with his powers as opposed to his twin. He fought his powers, when he should've worked with them. Their greatest claim to fame was defeating the parasite Jinshin-Mushi, the Earthquake Beetle. After she killed a member of Gojira's kind and laying eggs in him, Fujin and Raijin sealed her underground. Hopefully the seal has held up, otherwise Gojira is going to have a fight in his hands. She was always so temperamental, that one."
Tumblr media
"Huh..." She briefly glossed over the previous topic, going back to Fujin and Raijin. The information about the Earthquake Beetle and how Gojira would have another fight on his hands had her glancing at her father; "So... in other words... if that happened you'd have to go out and fight him?"
She wondered if it'd cause problems for their family... but in the end, the thought was dashed from her mind when she saw something move by a window outside. "What was that...?" She headed over to have a look, only to see a herd of Qilin grazing just outside the walls of the temple grounds.
"... Those are Qilin, right?"
Half horse, half dragon. Scales lining their bodies in differing shades, and pairs of antler horns sitting atop their heads, presenting in a horse shape but most definitely appearing almost draconic in how they handled themselves.
"Pretty."
