Me: “Clearly this is a Nazi, and he’s hiding behind a fake profile and threatening people. Here’s the landlord’s phone number if anyone wants to inform him that the resident flying the white supremacist flag is inciting violence.”

Comments: “Stop hate mongering! Freedom of speech! Go back to Nashville where you came from! Fucking commie!”

Meanwhile

Trump imposes a temporary ban on refugees. Many are arriving at the airport, having already been en route to the U.S., thinking they had escaped the horror of war, only to be told they have to return to a place where everyone will know they tried to flee.

If you’re seriously going to stand up for freedom of speech for fascists right now, at a time when their freedom extends so far that they have the president of the United States acting on their behalf and condemning refugee families to violence and death, I have no time for you. Not for your shitty memes, not for the exhaustion of attempting to educate you, not for “just getting along”, nothing. You know what you’re doing. You know whose side you’re on. You either stand up to fascism, or you foster a climate in which it can thrive.

Because it’s coming out like weeds, and weeds don’t stay under control when you “don’t give them attention.” They don’t balance out and live quietly. If you don’t act against them, they spread until all the good things are choked out by the result of your indifference.

Now is not the time to be indifferent. We have to be intentional.

Refugees + Crime in Sweden: Take Two

Yesterday we responded to a query about the completely-unfounded, xenophobic bullshittery claiming that Sweden’s intake of asylum seekers was leading to an epic wave of sexual violence.  But what about crime overall?  Surely letting in half a million asylum seekers over the last decade would lead to a corresponding increase in crime, right? Wrong.  Here’s what the last ten years looked like in Sweden: 

Notice how the crime rate does not go up in any significant way, no matter how many refugees come into Sweden?  

(sources: x, x, x, and x) Notice how crime increased by 3% between 2014 & 2015, even though the number of refugees arriving doubled?   Notice how crime was higher in 2009 than in 2014, even though 3x more refugees arrived in Sweden in 2014 than in 2009?   It’s almost as if refugees are less-likely than other Swedes to commit crimes and/or refugees have no effect on crime rates! You’ll recall last year when we demonstrated that the hysteria around refugees & sexual violence in Germany was an unfounded myth.   Last fall, we explained how German crime rates remain flat despite bringing in over a million refugees.   The latest U.S. study demonstrates that communities with the largest proportion of refugees experience huge drops in crime rates.  The UK has noted that crime rates tend to fall as migration increases.

The only crime wave that refugees are involved in is the one where xenophobic criminals attack refugees.  Anyone who says otherwise needs to be shut the fuck down.
