okay, ive watched Cats the musical several times, and after watching the movie twice i can easily say Robbie Fairchild is absolutely brilliant as Munkustrap (my favorite cat)

Cats (2019) positivity

the entire beginning until jennyanydots was near pitch perfect. the songs, the acting, the choreography on display, the coloring of the night going from dark to softening by the moon and stores around

the choice to make victoria our movie stand in was a good one as she embodies the confusing and then exciting prospect of landing ourselves in the jellicle ball (aka some props to francesca howard) and having her be a cat abandoned by humans would help lead into the themes of acceptance

ROBBIE FAIRCHILD CANNOT GET ENOUGH PROPS FOR HIS ACTING LIKE WOW ITS STRAIGHT FIRE AND HIS VOICE IN EVERY SONG WAS AMAZING!!!

while it took me the second screening there ARE some more unique designs on the cats from lighter coats, some recognizable kits, jewelry, and demeter has idk a straight up blue coat so like thumbs up

the set design!!!! i absolutely love the huge as heck poster for macavity and his  design with his coat AND WHEN HE CHIMES IN WITH “what?” the suspense? the drama? but also ALL THE SETS FROM THE THEATER TO THE MILK BAR TO THE TRAIN TO THE STATUE OUTSIDE ARE ACTUALLY MADE AND COLORFUL AND BIG AND START CLAPPING BECAUSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

all of robbie fairchild in gumbie cat is soft and good. munkustrap just shows he can and will go ham for every cats song and that’s like EXACTLY HOW MUNKUSTRAP DO SO !!!!!!!!!!! 

jason derulo interrupting gumbie cat to switch to rum tum tugger reminds me that for having so many people who found it hard to follow we actually have pretty much good transitions for like 70% of what happens. munkustrap actually leads victoria to jennyannydots house, rum tum tugger takes everyone to the milk bar, mister mistofelees leads victoria away from the house to the theater, /while a bit contrived/ victoria is tired from the ball so she goes out to find grizabella. we have the transition scenes mate.

RUM TUM TUGGER was as PG/G as we could get and personally I approve the ADHD take and music-wise, the …new beats are interesting and jason derulo HAS a good voice. i would have like to see him be allowed to be more bombastic since its more in the last 30 second that we get to see him roll out some notes and its 10/10!  i also love that he is never reaaaaallly malicious and is like a good person. “MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILK”

grizabella the glamour cat reminds me that CASSANDRA (tho confoundingly and frustratingly being given demeter’s role as lore-centric chorus cat) is a good actress, and hints at that lore with her specific anger at grizabella….jennifer hudson can do sad. and sing good.

the first minute of bustopher jones. is. good. the fakeout that the hat might be macavity turning out to be bustopher. the fact that he introduces himself and offers a hand to victoria is the gentleman we know. it works that HE is the one who starts the song in this case because he’s a gentleman, what’s he gonna do? not welcome victoria? while james cordon doesn’t have the stoic regalness of the ‘98 ver. he DOES instead lean into the kind and unabashed to be fat GENTLEMAN side for this section of the song and the set when we’re in a huge building we have OTHER CATS STARTING TO JOIN BUSTOPHER JONES AND HAVE FUN. -everything up until we go out back to where the trash cans i’ll defend-

mungojerrie and rumpleteazer is GOOD! the slower jazzy version from the original london fits the more blues and jazz theme that they had introduced with rum tum tugger but turns it a little more dangerous as they turn out to be jerks but R.I.P Me we decided to stan because

MUNGO AND RUMPLE’S DESIGNS ARE GOOD POINT BLANK! their bodies fit better, their faces are painted, the calico design works with their hands not being cgi-ed at all (idk because stage can’t do it either so whatev)

the actors are smooth af, expressive, in sync, having a freaking blast which translated well to a scene where victoria can’t help going along with their mischief and nearly being on their rhythm (till the end poor girl) 

the whole scene actually is good //you guys are just mean 

mister mistofelees looking at the jewelry and without saying a freaking word victoria looks down and away as she takes them off

SPEAKING OF MISTORIA IT WAS FINE (studio-mandated? maybe and confusing because if they wanted a  pairing…there are literally at least a handful of others that they could have gone for including munk/demeter, victoria/plato, alonzo/cassandra, etc.) BUT I CAN’T BELIEVE I HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT NO THEY ARE NOT SIBLINGS IN ‘98!! AS POPULAR AS THAT HEADCANON IS ITS NOT EVEN IN THE REALM OF CANON! NOTHING IS! CONSIDERING THE MANY ADAPTIONS THAT FOCUS ON DIFFERENT THINGS AND ALSO HAVE THEIR OWN HEADCANONS (not even munkustrap/demeter is always canon T.T) THE ONLY REMOTELY QUASI CANON THING IN MOST THINGS IS PROBABLY THAT MUNKUSTRAP AND/OR RUM TUM TUGGER ARE DEUTERONOMY'S KIDS!

And btw i haven’t mentioned it yet but mister mistofelees is like not even in the realm of who he usually is but back off he’s valid. the actor? good. the coat and hat? a+.  the song later? ALL THE ACTORS AND VOICES INVOLVED ARE SOFT AND EMOTIONAL AND IT WHILE ITS NOT THE STORY WE KNOW IT TELLS ITS OWN SELF CONTAINED STORY.

it SO FREAAKING SOFT AND FILLED WITH THE LOVE ALL THE CATS FEEL FOR OLD DEUT I CAN’T BELIEVE THEM, THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY IS THERE FOR A SACRED SECOND AS THE CHORUS IS ALSO AS SOFT AS CAN BE, THE FREAKINGLOVE I’M SORY BUT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

beautiful ghost lyrically kinda cemented for me that one of the aims of the movie was to parallel victoria and grizabella’s similarities in being thrown out and wanting to belong again. and probably set up the frustration that we feel after having learned to love these OTHER cats and as they can be accepting and loving and proud of each other yet seem to be unable or unwilling to welcome back grizabella (i DO have a criticism about this but that’s another post)

ian mckellen commands a lot of the dignity required for an old theater cat and seeing him reminisce is very nostalgic-feeling 

even tho it made me sad since it ends with them being sad about being called out, the close up of some kittens as he said “these other cats-” cue some kittens being smiley :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD

skimbleshanks shows EXACTLY why I don’t really buy the CATS could never work in movie format because the movie format can’t contribute anything to what works about the stage play

the camera work is amazing and helps build that anticipation from some random tap number TO A SPECTACULAR TAP NUMBER MIMICKING A TRAIN INCOMING TO BEING ON FREAKING TRAIN TRACKS TO A WIDE SHOT OF CAT SILHOUETTES ON A BRIDGE SINGING SHIMBLESHANKS TO ANOTHER COLORFUL SLEEK SET AND BACK AGAIN TO THE THEATER

i mean its a bop too but did that need to be said about skimbleshanks i mean come on?
