I want you to remember:
The fascists hate you too and they just will pretend otherwise until after they've killed the rest of us, before they turn on you.

It's random, but do you consider Flight of Icarus canon? I don't know if you have posted about it. I haven't read the book, but I have read snippets of it on Tumblr. Since it was written by one of the show's writers, I'd consider it canon. I honestly haven't read any books about any of the show's characters, so I don't know what to think.
I think it's in that grey space where the lines between canon and not canon are blurring 馃
I've read the all books apart from Dustin's (which I immediately put on my Christmas wishlist as soon as I learned it exists) and Hopper's, and all the novels except for Eddie's have been written by authors who got the og script for the season so the timelines are completely messed and all that but they all contain canon backstories in my opinion. Runaway Max gives us a lot of insight about the Mayfield-Hargrove household shedding even more light on why Billy is the way he is and why Max's relationship with him is the way it is etc and the same goes for all the other novels so even though they got some timeline things wrong and weren't written by the ST writers, I still consider them canon even though they officially aren't.
With Eddie's book, it feels the most canon of all. I know a lot of people are saying that he's ooc and not our Eddie in the book and that's true because he isn't supposed to - the novel shows us the backstory of how eighteen-years-old Eddie became our Eddie. (He's not mean or an asshole or anything in the book, he's a hurting, abused teenager who's never felt loved before and lives in a city where he's hated simply for being different. He has yet to find out who he wants to be, and to learn to love himself and I think that's portrayed in a great way).
So I do consider it canon because it makes sense, not because one of the ST writers wrote it, but it's just as valid to not consider it as canon 馃グ

it's been years and it's still genuinely crazy to me that the first two seasons of stranger things had this throughline where all the bad things that were happening in hawkins were directly caused by the us government and that they were excusing the awful things they were doing to their own citizens (children!) through cold war/red scare reactionism. and then in season three there was a secret russian base under the town mall.

Listen, even if that was the reason why I think they're bad writers it would be my opinion that wouldn't hurt anyone so you getting riled up about that and coming to my inbox on anon like a coward is still really weird. But they aren't good writers. They're great storytellers but the way they re-heat the same storylines over and over again is not good writing. Look at seasons 2 and 3. Will and Billy got the exact same storyline. Steve was meant to rape Nancy in season 1 but Joe Keery convinced them otherwise. Robin was supposed to be Steve's new love interest, but Maya and Joe convinced the Duffers to change it and let Robin be gay. It was the actors who gave us one of the most beautiful, wholesome platonic soulmates connection between Steve and Robin, not the writers. Giving every main character plot armour to the point that we all know it's the new minor characters that'll die because every main character is invincible is bad writing. And introducing a character who's an outcast and hunted by an entire town just for being different even though he has a heart of gold and then killing him off for shock value is bad writing and sending a really sad message too, btw.
So yeah, I've always thought the Duffers weren't good writers. I'd be open for friendly discussion but that's obviously not what you want. If you have a different opinion that's cool but bitching about other people's harmless opinions on anon in their inbox is the most unhinged, chronically online, batshit crazy thing I've ever seen 馃槀

hi...ok so I am not trying to be negative but I really wanna vent my feelings...I am now 100% convinced that Eddie is not coming back, especially after seeing the memorial statue leak and Dustin's arm tattoo....at most they will give Eddie a flashback to traumatize Dustin and the rest of the fandom...I'm so disappointed in the writers for that because they could've sent a good message by bringing Eddie back... making it interesting but all they will do is give Eddie the justice4barb re-heated storyline and Dustin's entire story arc would be the same as Nancy's in s2...Dustin deserves an original storyline, not a re-heated mess...also the fact that we have not gotten anything related to Joseph Quinn on the set...like not a single leak...so it is safe to say Eddie may not be back, regardless of that I will still watch s5 as I have been a fan since s1,
it just makes me so sad because I have never had a fav character in Stranger Things...like I loved all the characters but I never had a fav until s4 with Eddie, tbh I don't wanna watch s5 just out of spite but ik I will end up watching it...
Thank you for all your theories and speculation...they really cheered me up...
Sorry for the late reply, I've wanted to think about this because you're right, the Duffers aren't exactly great writers and I'd definitely agree that it would fit if they'd just leave him dead and give him the re-heated Barb story line, but the thing is, there have been hints at his return, and of them that absolutely can't have been a coincidence, which is the background colour of his Netflix icon. That was intentional and we know from previous seasons that that's exactly the kind of hint they'd drop for us to spot.
As for the leaks...it's been almost a year of filming and we didn't get any leaks and now that they're about to wrap the internet is flooded with them. There will always be leaks, most of them fake, and this is the final season of one of the biggest shows ever, not on Netflix but in general. I firmly believe that every leak out there is either made up but people seeking attention for a few seconds or made up by Netflix people who know exactly that leaks are a) an amazing way to keep the hype up/rekindle it in preparation for the release of the season and b) who know they can use fake leaks to steer our attention to other things. Don't you think it's weird that there are no Eddie leaks at all? I mean, he was the most celebrated and hyped up character of the series to the point the producers called our love for him the Eddie Phenomenon, and Joe Quinn is still being asked on a regular basis whether Eddie will return. They know we're waiting for anything to give that away. Yet there's not one single leak out there regarding Eddie - not ones telling us he'll be back and also not a single one telling us he definitely won't be back. All these leaks and especially leaked photos feel staged to hold our attention at where they want it to be. Again, I could be wrong, but a perfectly clear shot of Steve and Dustin at the epilogue of the story dropping the huge spoiler that they'll both survive? It's either fake, or seriously makes me wonder what's gonna happen in this season if such a huge thing is revealed before the first teaser trailer actually dropped.
I mean, that's just my opinion/ gut feeling and my two cents about the matter because in the end we don't know anything about the final season yet, but...I still believe he'll be back. (And if he truly doesn't return in the final season, I'm absolutely certain they'll give him a spin-off series like they did with Loki.)
