Week 15 - Final Thoughts
After 15 weeks of talking about design, I can slightly predict the possibility of the future of design. It is pretty hard to get even the slightest bit accurate with my prediction, though, due to the rate of new technology being almost impossible to keep up with. Technology can go in a different direction every hour or decade. Currently, I am working my way to a degree in the technology field, which will incorporate design crucial to all aspects of development. Trying to solve a problem is essentially the root of everything revolving around technology.
One example of a project that I could see in the potential future is self-driving. This design of solving the problem of dangerous driving and the ability to cause less traffic would be the future. I can predict this as a potential future since implementing this technology is proving to be possible right now. Even though it has its glitches and bugs, I can see perfection over time.
Another example of a project is artificial intelligence (A.I.). Although right now, there is heavy development of A.I. throughout our lives, this technology design can create robots that could solve all aspects of human problems. Of course, it does sound unreal and alarming, but a technological advancement of such kind will most likely not be limited.
One cool project that I could see the design taking place is hovering transportation. Decades ago, the concept of flying cars was unreal and was proven to be impossible in today's current age. I see this taking place in the future, but it will be decades before this is in place. Another spin-off would be actual hoverboards, unlike the hoverboards that became a popular trend years ago. This transportation of hovering can be done and would solve many problems in its design.

Week 14 - Your Choice
From the first journal post to now, I have been able to explore and think of different designs throughout my daily life. Even though most designs in my life are perfect, there are plenty of design faults.
The first rant that I will talk about is the trend of adding Bluetooth to the most uncomplicated products. Even though this design could solve many problems that users have daily, most of the problems are minimal and outweigh simplicity. For example, adding Bluetooth to a toaster might give you more features and the ability to start the toaster from afar. However, the practical ability to open your phone and stand by the toaster is time-consuming. Adding the possibility of your phone having difficulties connecting to the toaster adds to the time spent when you could have adjusted the temperature and pressed down on the lever. There are practical uses of Bluetooth in many designs, such as a speaker, but there should be careful consideration before making products less practical.
As for design vs. art, I have many lingering questions about the differences, but essentially, the many questions are if something portrays to be art but is not. For example, it is a painting with an informative text design since it solves the problem of the person not having that information before. Or is it art since the text is not functional to the human?
There have been a couple of fantastic products that have captured my attention. One nifty product that caught my attention was the basic calculator. When I had to change the battery in my calculator, it exposed all the hardware components. It put into perspective all of the necessary technology needed to complete even the most basic design of solving the problem of humans needing more extensive calculations done. Simple technologies like that opened my eyes to the endless small components in a design. This scales into more significant technologies, even self-driving cars.

Week 13 - New Media
In the textbooks, “digital aesthetic” is defined as the use of technology to create and expand graphic design (Eskilson, 2019, p. 391). From this, the ability to expand onto contemporary examples is almost endless due to the wide range of technological advancements.
Starting with the simplest form of digital aesthetic, the ability to draw in a paint software is a great example. The common that any user of Microsoft Windows may have seen or used Microsoft Paint. This application allows the user to choose any color, “brush” size, and essentially all essential abilities to alter a blank canvas at a basic level.
With this basic form of manipulation of the screen, other sources of applications have carried and added different levels of complexity to visualization on the computer. From basic loading screens in video games to the ability to travel in a game with visual effects, these digital aesthetic forms can keep users exploring the digital scene more.
Based on these forms of digital aesthetics, it is also interesting to look at how these aesthetics are displayed. Screens in the basic form have different technologies, which could vary the ability of the user to see the digital aesthetic output. For example, a gaming company could have released an HDR (high dynamic range content). However, the user limits and alters that digital aesthetic if not using a compatible HDR screen. Extending further from limitations, the ability to have different forms of displayed aesthetics varies on the intended purpose. For example, a video game designer would not have a smartphone screen in mind when using digital aesthetics; rather, application developers for the phone would have that in mind. Depending on the device and the application needs, current (contemporary) uses of the MacBook pro for the digital aesthetic are the operating system and the application built for the MacBook.

Week 12 - New Media
The field of new media is widely expandable throughout many different fields. As mentioned in the lecture, the two fields that caught my attention the most were the internet and computer games. Below I have paragraphed each specific aspect in those fields and their most significant impacts on interactive design.
The first specific field of the internet is the video-sharing and commenting system. This concept of interactive design has led to one of the most popular methods of communication in the world. With sites that allow an individual to post a video created by themselves on the internet, allowing those who watch the video to interact with that video has had a significant impact on the way humans gain information, leisure, and show interest or dislike. This interaction has led to short-form or long-form videos, both with their pros and cons depending on what the user is seeking.
The second specific field of the internet is messaging. Even though the development of older messaging technology existed, the implementation of current new media forms has led to the interactive design's significant impact. From the user's ability to change the font of the text to sending emojis to express emotion and the ability to encrypt the text being sent via various services, this change in messaging has led to people interacting with each other from a distance quickly and easily.
The computer games field also significantly impacted interactive design. From the days of the first Playstation and even older systems, the wide variety of games and interaction of humans with those games are striking to interactive design. The ability to customize a character and to choose your storyline within a game is fascinating for this period. With the added ability to communicate and play games with other humans, the possibilities are endless with interactive design.

Week 11 – Graphic Design
Design is involved in our everyday lives. From the moment we wake up to the nightly rest that everyone uses their alarm clock designed to wake themselves up. Furthermore, design takes an approach to assist a current issue and create a solution to that problem. As mentioned before, the problem of not being able to wake up on time was solved by creating an alarm that will beep at a high enough decibel that will cause the person to wake up. This extent of a design and its designers behind the solutions solved is what revolves around a Citizen Designer. A Citizen Designer essentially means to connect design from those individuals to have a larger and meaningful impact that spreads not just for a certain amount but for the entire world (Eskilson, 2019). This type of designer is not just looking for the solution, the solution must be the solution to other problems. Focusing on taking issues and elevating the world is what will have the greatest impact on not only the people on the world, but the world itself (Eskilson, 2019). For example, the idea of designing solar methods of creating energy rather than fossil fuels falls into the category of being a citizen designer. Looking at the problems of both fossil fuels polluting the environment and the eventual decline of those natural resources are two issues that will benefit the whole world if dealt with by the designer(s). Designers play an important role in the future, therefore the role of being a Citizen Designer for the common good of society will leave a larger and lasting impact. Without designers for the world then the world would be at a much larger critical need. Even though the critical need was lessened, the need for more Citizen Designers will be called for.

Week 10 – Graphic Design
Graphic design relating to typography is quite interesting as a whole. One aspect that is interesting is the very beginning with the mass production aspect of typography. Johann Gutenber who popularized publishing material with the use of printing presses was able to create a Gutenberg Bible (Eskilson, 2019, pp. 12-15). The typography used was Texture which falls into the family of blackletter. The reason for this choice was the compactness and readability for the book for the masses. The next interesting idea was logotype. This typography, in a specific case of Das Plakat journal, involved the use of two different fonts (Eskilson, 2019). The fonts were sans serif and blackletter. This combination of different fonts allowed the popularization of the journal to stand out from the crowd. The incorporation of Art Deco and its mainstream use in typography of many different sectors was also an interesting idea from the readings (Eskilson, 2019). The use of Art Deco in the Broadway in New York City resembled a sense of “sophistication” as iterated by the reading (Eskilson, 2019, p. 169). Adding sophistication from typography to something that would already be presumed to be sophisticated extends the idea of the impact that typography has on the world and its individual events. Another interesting idea comes from the postmodern typography and the use of Sans Serif (Eskilson, 2019). The ability to incorporate and implement extravagant lettering into magazines (such as the Avant Garde) was very eye opening to many letterings and similar practices in magazines today (Eskilson, 2019). This section of the reading also covered the International Style as well. The digital typography was the most interesting section considering that the era is quite new. For example, Apple’s FontEditor and the bit-mapped fonts (Eskilson, 2019). The whole premise here is to create a that “was perfectly legible to its daily readers” (Eskilson, 2019, pp. 358-362). In doing so, other programs and companies developed different typography suiting its customers and users.

Week 9 – Industrial Design
Milwaukee as a whole is full of interesting architecture, from the older buildings to newly developed buildings. Driving through the city often revealed hidden gems of areas that may not be seen by the general public passing through major roads. Industrial design is amplified throughout Milwaukee and its high rises. For example, the building that reflects this design is the U.S. Bank tower which follows a plain and squared window look reflecting industrial design. Furthermore, many of the smaller buildings in Milwaukee (usually business buildings) have that industrial design too.
This industrial design in Milwaukee can be reflected and described from the University of Milwaukee Campus. Many of the buildings have an industrial style that reflects the city's major companies that have been around for many generations. Even the newly constructed buildings did not stray away from the industrial design and modernized the industrial design look. One popular company is the Miller which inhibits industrial design in and out with the mass production inheritance. Furthermore, Miller did have an influence by Brook Stevens which connects to the next paragraph.
As for Brook Stevens, staying in Milwaukee was the perfect choice for Stevens for two reasons. It’s Stevens birthplace as well as his condition that limited his ability to travel abroad. So staying in Milwaukee during an early time of development that still hasn’t been nearly as constructed as it is today was perfect for his success. Brook Stevens was able to capture many different new designs and implement them in Milwaukee and its local companies. With this grounding and growing credibility, this allowed further ability to create designs for international companies that would be iconic classics as they are today. Stevens was a major influence to many industrial design aspects that are commonly known in Milwaukee and the world.

Week 8 - Industrial Design
Tumblr media
The toaster is designed to solve the problem of quickly toasting any bread. The toaster takes this a step further and allows the trouble of having to toast more than two toasts by including another set within.
Tumblr media
The lamp provides the electrical current from an outlet and a light bulb mount that holds a light bulb. Furthermore, the light bulb housing solves the problem of direct light to a specific place (desk). Another problem solved is the harshness of light with the translucent plate in front.
Tumblr media
The candle holder is designed to hold the correct candle inside. This design also solves the problem of possible wax dripping on the side and possibly reduces a safety hazard by enclosing the fire inside a metal area.
Tumblr media
The calculator shown is designed to ease and solve mathematical problems to a certain degree. However, the design is taken a step further and has a cover case to solve the problem of damaging the front of the calculator during transportation.
Tumblr media
The bed frame drawn is designed to solve the problem of keeping a bed off of the ground and allowing for an additional under-bed to provide stability.
Tumblr media
The monitor drawn is designed to solve the problem of displaying an image output to another screen. The design also solves the problem of height variability by including an adjustable stand.
Tumblr media
The electrical box is designed to organize and keep breaker switches. This electrical box also solves the issue of safety by including a door that opens and closes when wanting access to switch controls.
Tumblr media
The two outlets in the wall are designed to solve the problem of standard electricity connection and safety. The outlets are designed to allow a standard connection with multiple cords and allow the connection to be safe from an accidental connection with human contact.
Tumblr media
The fire alarm is designed to solve the problem of alerting a homeowner of a fire occurring. The alarm is also designed to solve the problem of letting the owner know the battery is low by beeping.
Tumblr media
The four drawers are designed to solve the problem of both organizing and putting storage in place. Another design aspect is the inclusion of glass on each drawer to provide an easy ability to understand what is inside.

Week 7 - Architecture
The two key principles of Universal Design that I will cover in this post are "flexibility in use" and "low physical effort" (NCSU, 2006). Flexibility in use is generally the design that doesn't have one primary purpose and is up to an individual's interpretation/use-case. Low physical effort is generally the ability to exert minimal energy from that individual when using the product (NCSU, 2006).
The following are examples of universal design principles in my daily life.
Tumblr media
Flexibility in design is shown accurately by this watch. The user can determine how the watch functions as a design. For example, the watch can display time and track heart rate, but the user can also convert the watch into a running watch with apps.
Tumblr media
Another example of flexibility is this fan. The user has options in what kind of effective fanning is needed. Furthermore, the user can choose whether the fan rotates to accommodate fanning to one area or the entire room. In addition, the user can press another button allowing for the fan to shut off automatically after a certain amount of hours. The flexibility of the fan accommodates the needs of the individual.
Tumblr media
The following universal design of low physical effort is this desk. The user has to exert minimal effort to raise and lower the desk. The user needs to touch a touch button on the top. The design includes electric motors that will do the lifting and lowering for the individual. Furthermore, if the user had pre-saved a height, a simple touch will raise or lower the desk to the specific height without focusing or holding a touch button.
Tumblr media
Another example of low physical effort is the button on the water dispenser. This water dispense eliminates the need to hold the water cup and allows the user to press a button and wait. Hence, causing a less energy amount exerted if the individual doesn't hold the weight of the cup and water.

Week 6 - Architecture
Tumblr media
Recently moving to the Milwaukee area, I pass by the outdoor images I have compiled that give an accurate representation of the architecture that I see. The building that I know every day interest me in exploring the city. Even though these are only three images (including a sketch), Milwaukee is full of more complex architecture and shows even more history to the town. For example, above this text is the Milwaukee Art Museum. This building is widely known if looking at architecture in Milwaukee. The building (known as the Quadracci Pavilion is undoubtedly a top architecture piece regarding building and art museums as if it is a boat on land. The building extends with sail-like wings on the side, followed by cables that hold those wings. This building has won many awards throughout the years, such as the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award (IABSE, 2020).
Tumblr media
Above is a sketch representing the complexity of angles inside the Milwaukee Art Museum. The curved walls are indeed eye-catching.
Tumblr media
Right next to the Milwaukee Art Museum in the U.S. Bank. The architecture here follows a repetitive square design that completes one of the tallest buildings in Wisconsin. The addition of the U.S. Bank gives a deeper understanding of the industrial revolution and the need for building to be built in city spaces. Newer tall buildings are complex with angles, but the square design is quite interesting historically.
Tumblr media
The Daniel W. Hoan Memorial bridge is a fantastic architecture structure in Milwaukee for the final image. This bridge is tall and spans a long distance, but the bridge consists of a middle arching piece (Lichtenstein, 2016). People may overlook this bridge since it is not a building, but this central bridge is essential in connecting Milwaukee and its downtown area. This building also gives a great view of other architecture in Milwaukee and a look over Lake Michigan.

Week 5 - History of Design
Exploring the readings has allowed for a deeper look into design influences around the world and even my surroundings. These design influences are important when understanding the historical needs for problems that were solved previously and how those continue to solve problems that are prevalent today. The three following examples connections these surrounding examples with the readings and how the examples solve a problem which is the underlying reasoning for design (solving a problem).
In the Graphic Design: A New History on page 198, the use of “filmic vision” and its use to advertise films were both useful in catching an audiences attention and furthermore interest. This is seen by the image provided in my current living. This image is of a cd that captures this advertisement “filmic vision.” The two characters in this are similar to what is represented in the book. The characters are Tom and Jerry who are taken from the movie and shown on the cover to catch the attention of the audience achieving its design purpose.
Tumblr media
In the Graphic Design: A New History on page 225, the “Constructivist graphic” designs are used to achieve practicality and functionality while achieve a modern look. This can be seen relatively easily throughout modern day life. In the image below this chair follows the design purpose of solving a problem of sitting, but further solves problems of modern looks and practicality.
Tumblr media
In the Graphic Design: A New History on page 281, the use of “Art Deco” style and Jean Carlu’s posters in wars of symbols for information can be seen today. The image shown is a symbol used to represent that this mouse can be connected via two different methods. The two methods are either for a usb or bluetooth connection. These two methods are represented by the starter symbols which are similar in uses to the posters by Carlu.

Week 4 - Found Object
Tumblr media
When observing this parking sign the design element of this is to inform and a height that is legible. The problem that this parking sign solved is the information needed when parking a spot to be readily clear and available.
Tumblr media
This light post can be observed as solving a problem for seeing at night time. It does have cool, metal attributes but the overall purpose and design is to provide light at a risen elevation to lighten up the surroundings using a lightbulb. That light bulb was in fact designed to solve the problem of actually producing light.
Tumblr media
The following gate with an open pattern is designed to solve the problem of containing and separating people at a ground level. Another problem solved within this gate was the need for turf. Although the turn has characteristic colors and lines, the design element is to inform and provide a surface soft enough to be used with foot traffic in any condition climate. The design is achieved and does a good job at doing the design aspect.
Tumblr media
This light fixture was designed to solve a problem. This problem is very similar in the design needed for both the light bulb and light post. This light fixture uses the problem of lighting a dark area with a light bulb. The other problem this light fixture solved was being able to not obstruct the path of a walkway. Furthermore, the bulb in the light fixture was designed to be longer and provide light over a wider space.
Tumblr media
The elevator shown has the design element of solving the problem of accessibility and convenience. This elevator incorporates multiple design elements from other designs mentioned. Such as the light bulb, light fixture, and the use of a sign to generally inform. The combination of design in the elevator allows the complexity of problems to all be solved in addition to allowing ease of traveling up levels if stairs are not an option for an individual.

Week 3 - History of Design
Referring to my previous definition of design (problem solving an issue using data and innovative thinking that is typically done in a collaborative manner), the ten photos below will explore and dive into the depths of design.
Bottle
Tumblr media
As depicted in the photo, an image of a bottle is shown. At the forefront a typical observation would be that the bottle is cooled black and has a slight transparency, useful right? That is the design aspect into making the water bottle. A person or group had to have innovative thinking into this bottle. First starting with the mechanism to open the lid, sealing tightly with a press of the thumb achieves an issue of liquid spilling. Next was the useful holder that is used to hold on to the bottle if your hands are full. Thirdly was the transparency of the bottle, allowing for the issue of not being able to see how much liquid is left and/or being able to fill the bottle with precise accuracy. Fourthly, the design of measurements built within the cup solves that problem of inaccuracy of filling. All of these aspects developed the reason why this bottle is a design that solves a problem with innovative thinking.
Backpack
Tumblr media
The Samsonite backpack may at first look sleek and well stitched, but a lot of innovative thinking went into the design of such a simple product. At the beginning, the use of a wide, soft foam handle was designed to ease the comfort and accessibility of lifting the backpack. On the other hand, the use of two cup holders on the sides of the backpack solves the issue of not being able to carry your bottle. An even more innovative approach was the slight lasticity created on the bottle holders to fit any sized bottle. Finally, the use of multiple zippered pockets solved the issue of storage and organization. These innovative designs lead to the conclusion that this backpack is indeed part of the design definition.
Table
Tumblr media
This simple yet useful design achieves the purpose of both solving the issue of move ability and comfort while achieving the overall design aspect of creating a workable work surface. The table used innovative thinking to include both wheels on the bottom to make moving the table easier, while curving the edges of the table to allow for someone's arms to rest and not be pressed harshly against a straight edge. These design elements combined with the smooth, rigid flat surface on top creates the innovative and problem solving design.
Pencil
Tumblr media
The entirety of the pencil in any form is considered design, from the use case of creating the ability to write with lead. This pencil takes the standard design and even more so takes another innovative approach in design. Starting from the top, the eraser solves the problem of running out quickly. This eraser is removable and twists to release more eraser whenever needed, allowing for continuous use of the eraser. In the middle there is a soft, touch material that solves the issue of grip and comfortability. Likewise, on the bottom the place where the lead mechanically dispenses solves the problem of having to quickly get more lead. An even more innovative design was the spring action on the lead. When writing the lead will move, adjusting to pressure solving the issue of having a smoother writing experience. This innovation and useful pencil is a clear example of design and its ability to reach higher potential.
Door
Tumblr media
This door has been a part of a useful design since the beginning of invention. This door in particular creates even more useful innovative design that leads to better practicality. The spring action on top of the door frame allows for the door to be smoothly closed and shut, fixing the problem of slamming. Another innovative design was the inbuilt window, allowing for either side to view what is occurring on either side. This reduces hazards when opening, but even more so creates safety for both outside and inside with clear visibility. This door and its innovative design solves the basic use of closing a room, but even more so takes an even more elaborate approach in design.
Door sign
Tumblr media
This under-thought but very useful design solves some of the biggest issues that are common. Firstly, the issue of classroom recognition is solved with the numbers provided. The second issue solved was the classroom name, allowing for individuals to understand the room name if the number isn’t known. Thirdly, the design aspect of including the braille solves the issue for people who need such legibility. All of these design aspects achieve the given definition of design.
Extension cord
Tumblr media
The very-basic extension cord solves many issues regarding electricity. This design incorporates the innovative need for power to be extended from the source in cases where the original equipment or power needed machine can access that power from further. This design approach is further extended with the use of clearly identifiable orange to reduce chances of falling over the cord as well as to not accidentally not submerge the cord in possible water. This design of both extending and further innovative approaches creates the extension cord.
Car
Tumblr media
This car was designed with careful attention. The design of this car achieves innovative thinking, from the basic use of transportation to solving common issues of comfortability. The use of spring suspension, thicker sided wheels, and soft seats achieves the design element of comfortability. While main components of the engine, wheels, steering, and more achieve the design element of transportation. Together this car compacts design into one innovative car.
Bus Concept Sketch
Tumblr media
Further extending from the car, the bus solves issues that existed before. From the amount of traffic on the road ways, to the ability to transport multiple people in large amounts, and even to the practicality of city use to solve the issue of parking with a regular car creates the design of the bus to be innovative and useful. In this specific case though, the concept sketch drawing is also a feature of design. This useful concept sketch achieves the ability to pre-design an object in its begging stages (please mind drawing ability).
Notebook
Tumblr media
The basic use to capturing thoughts, information, and even drawing is the innovative approach taken to the notebook. Rather than loosely keeping information together, the looped metal neatly organizes the pages together, while solving the problem of organization. Second, the indented perforation on each page allows for the tearing of the page to be achieved neatly. Thirdly, the innovative and basic design of including lines on each page to solve the problem of organization and readability. This common and useful notebook achieves design with an innovative approach.

Week 2 - Design Thinking
When I had finished the “Design Thinking” reading in the Harvard Business Review by Tim Brown, I had come to this simple yet concise definition of design. Design is essentially problem solving an issue using data and innovative thinking that is typically done in a collaborative manner. This data and innovative thinking will lead to the “design” that fits this criteria.
A product that uses this definition of design thinking is my laptop. There are many design thinking processes that go into one design. Specifically, this MacBook solved many problems that people had. The designers had to think beforehand what the issues are currently. That consisted of, but not limited to, the screen size relative to the dimensions of the laptop, the ability to press on the touchpad anywhere, and the ease of accessing passwords. There were also questions brought out during this design thinking process that would have consisted of how this would be integrated with the Apple Ecosystem or will users care for more connection ports? Other areas of data will be found answering or leading to conclude answers of these questions. Then the shift from thinking to creating will occur to solve the problems and questions that previously existed. To provide evidence of the aforementioned design thinking process, Naina Chaturvedi from the Medium in the “How Apple used Design thinking?” had gone over this design thinking process similar to above. Concluding that Apple had done such design thinking into the MacBook efficiently and correctly leading to success.
The most significant concept this week in the reading would be the idea of “trial and error” (Brown 86). This step is critical for any part of human life, but especially when going through the design thinking process. It is unlikely to have the correct design the first time. Rather than being discouraged, attempting the design thinking process again and more thoroughly with different approaches will create that one success attempt.

Week 1 - About Me
Hello, my name is Bleon Muqaj. I am currently a freshman majoring in Computer Science. Currently I am an off campus student traveling via car. Another interesting fact about me is that my family is from Kosovo.
This class particularly interests me due to myself having gone to museums in the past. Everytime I have gone to one I seem to not find character and interest in the art pieces presented. This particularly involves the lack of knowledge I have about arts and its fundamentals. Taking this class I hope to gain knowledge and expertise about art to some degree and apply this when going to a museum.
Another reason why I am taking this class is because in third grade I drew a Picasso-like drawing for an art class and that was displayed in the principal's office for three years until I left the school. This achievement gave me a spark to take the class as well.
Relating to my major, understanding design and its fundamentals will be particularly useful when designing programs. Looking through the syllabus and seeing that this class will cover the design process may connect with other classes I take in the future.
Whenever I go to shop for a certain product design it is important. In a specific case recently when deciding between a boots or Adidas shoes I had to use this deciding factor. There are many different aspects of design from looks to comfortability. In this case, comfortability over took looks and made me choose Adidas shoes over boots for daily shoes. The look and art factor was suppressed during this decision.
As mentioned previously, I look forward to having a great and thorough understanding of design and art. This knowledge will break through the stagnation of looking and thinking about creativity that I may have in certain scenarios.
