I want to go into a small discussion with gil coins that Rufus flicks into the air.
Now, one can assume that these pieces are probably especially minted for him. He does quite the array of tricks from them. One thing that I’m particularly keen on is that crest that’s embossed.
Switch to the OG game where once he was appointed president there was a grand parade in Junon as well as his campaign banners everywhere. “New Era.” Was the motto for Shinra with him.
These coins say the same exact thing. They were MADE for him; he’s marking his legacy already on these gil pieces.
Ever Forward Shinra Inc. A New Era Reign Supreme
Then the family crest that adorns right smack in the middle.

now that my salt is out of the way i gotta talk about my boy, because this is the content y’all are here for. i have some thoughts. now it’s 7:15 in the morning and i haven’t slept literally all night, so my thoughts are scattered as fuck right now. i’m just going to make a bulleted list of things that i liked, didn’t like, or that stood out to me.
spoilers under the cut, all rufus-centric

now i’m just sitting here and reflecting on my relationship with rufus as a character and what it was that drew me to him.
i think the reason why it clicked when i was 14 (as opposed to when i was 7 when i first played FF7) was simply because i was older. i saw and understood certain things better.
i think, originally, i was simply drawn to the general aesthetics and themes surrounding him. rufus always symbolized power for me, way more than his father ever did. i was very attracted to the idea of the modern-day equivalent of a young prince seizing power during a crisis and ruling with sharpness, competency, and poise. a medieval fantasy would have glittering halls and an elaborate castle, but shinra hq was polished floors, clean angles, and fluorescent lights shining against sleek halls varnished in the white, black, and red of the company logo.
at 14, that shit’s pretty dope.
fuck u, at 30, that shit’s still dope.
and then when advent children came out, i loved the aesthetics there, too. amidst the destruction, his men still loyally stood at his side as his swords and shields. rufus is associated with the color white, but even within the white walls of a hospital, hooded and cloaked in white, he still somehow gave the feeling of ruling and acting from the shadows. even wheelchair-bound, he exuded a sense of control and power. and this time, he’s using it for good.
but even that last line feels disingenuous, because i think that the thing that really drew me to his character, quite honestly, happened in disc 2 of the original game. when tifa wakes up from her coma and barret tells her that rufus has been fighting weapon the whole time, i think that was the moment.
he never intended it, but rufus became a guardian and protector of the planet. and i think that’s what really, really got me. rufus is a villain. straight-up, he is a villain in final fantasy 7. and yet he stepped up into the role of righteousness not because of a defeat, not because of powerful words from the hero – but because it was his job, because it was right, and because he had to.
any other villain could have easily just pulled a saruman and gone “against the power of mordor, there can be no victory. we must join with sauron.” but rufus said no, fuck you, this is my planet. and the man who was, at one point, poised to be the greatest threat to the planet and its people, became one of its staunchest and most relentless protectors.
and of course arguments could be made that during the course of FF7 itself, rufus’s actions were motivated by self-preservation and greed. you can’t profit off of people if there’s no people and no planet. and honestly, those arguments aren’t exactly wrong. but that’s not the point.
i think i fell in love with rufus because i loved what he was as a concept. it wasn’t his motivations – it was his actions. it was the role that he was placed in and performed with no angst, complaining, or second-thoughts. he stepped up, put his foot down, and just said “no. not on my watch. i will fight you to the bitter end.” he didn’t have to be told, or forced, or coerced into action. he just did that shit. even though he was a villain.
and that’s why his redemption arc in the compilation just worked. it was so elegant and it made so much sense.
and now that i’m older i realize that it’s not money or aesthetic or political position that makes me associate rufus with power. it’s his constitution. he doesn’t whine or waver or get hung up on any of the emotional baggage that he very much has. he just gets shit done. even as a nobody with nothing in advent children, he still holds all the cards. he’s still getting shit done. you can’t beat this guy down. and when the shit hits the fan, he uses that unflagging constitution to do what’s good and right, even if initially he didn’t do it for good or right reasons.
he’s an unbreakable son of a bitch. they say that adversity shows a person’s true character, and rufus showed that he’s not a bad person at heart – and he takes that and acts on it and redeems himself as a result. it’s so easy to root for him. he is the ultimate survivor.
i guess what i’m saying is that i’m starting to get my attachment to him now.

HEY WHO WANTS SOME RUFUS-CENTRIC THEORY-MAKING ABOUT THE NEXT GAMES IN THE REMAKE-VERSE????? no one? good.
i’m thinking about the relationship that rufus had with the main party in the original and it occurs to me that, for a villain, he’s barely an antagonist. as crazy as that might sound.
in og, the turks are basically given a secondary order to stop/kill cloud and co. if they happen to run across them – and even then, in most cases, they either stand down and don’t even engage in a fight at all, or they’re kind of reluctant to try. they know that cloud isn’t rufus’s priority, not by a longshot.
even scarlet and heidegger know this. they don’t go after the party themselves until after they think rufus is dead (so no one will stop them?).
from day one, rufus’s priority is sephiroth and the promised land, in that order. he leaves cloud and co. alone unless they’re actively getting in the way.
it could also probably be argued that he was the one who ordered reeve to infiltrate the party via cait sith. and reeve doesn’t get arrested for continuing to help the party fight against shinra, again, until after heidegger and scarlet think rufus is dead. so the argument could be made that rufus saw some benefit in A. leaving cloud alone and B. giving him aid and assistance in the form of a party member who can not only fight but provide inside info.
rufus also goes out of his way to save every single member of the party in the northern crater. he could’ve left them all there to get killed by the weapons, but he doesn’t. he brings them ALL aboard the highwind and then even lets most of them go. (at least, this is what i’m assuming, because A. i can’t see how the rest of the party could’ve possibly gotten OUT of the crater if not for him and B. everyone was still in junon during sapphire weapon’s attack – not staging a rescue, just kind of there.) he only hangs onto barret and tifa, and that’s only because tifa’s in a coma and in need of medical attention – which rufus also provides. (and i’m sure barret just wanted to be by her side)
he keeps them under his care for a full week before deciding to execute them. but the execution is a strange thing, too. why wait a week? why do it publicly? was it really just for the PR?
is it possible that rufus hung onto barret and tifa for as long as he could in hopes that cloud would infiltrate and save them? was the public execution a last-ditch effort to get him to show up?
rufus isn’t stupid. he knows that his two top advisors (scarlet and heidegger) are incompetent at best and an active hindrance at worst, he’s distrustful of hojo, and he doesn’t take the threat of sephiroth lightly. he also knows that the turks alone won’t be able to clean up this mess. even though cloud was never actually soldier first class, it’s not a stretch to assume that rufus knows/believes that cloud is the best chance they have at actually beating sephiroth, if only because cloud is the only genetically enhanced supersoldier still standing.
SO WHY DO I BRING ALL OF THIS UP?
because i was thinking about how, in the remake, the turks not only don’t want to drop the sector 7 plate, but the game goes out of its way to show that they regret doing it. tseng has to give them a goddamn pep talk about it. the game almost felt like it was setting up for the idea that elena is getting her promotion to the turks not because reno is too physically injured, but because tseng wants to send him on sabbatical due to his guilt.
the remake also establishes that the turks are loyal to rufus above all else (which is in line with the original game/compilation). reno and rude are constantly bitching about papa shinra’s decisions and the stupid bullshit he has them do, but the second rufus comes calling, they all jump to his side.
and then i think about all of that shit in conjunction with the fact that the remake nixed rufus’s “i’ll rule the world through fear” speech + the fact that rufus is the only person in all of shinra who can see the whispers and can do so without being touched by aeris or sephiroth + my hypothesis that they’re going to soften his character slightly and not make him such a fucking dickhead from the get-go. (there’s also the detail of aeris coming out and saying that shinra’s not the real enemy, but.)
i think rufus shinra is going to have a very, very, very interesting role in future games. i think they’re going to strip him of his sub-villain status and make him a fairweather ally instead. i wouldn’t at all be shocked if the relationship between rufus/the turks and cloud/avalanche is going to be far closer to where they’re at in advent children, as opposed to what it’s like in og. which sets up a source of drama and intrigue within the greater organization of shinra, who will likely disapprove of the new president’s actions and attitude towards the terrorists and pawns that they’ve been after and using for so long.
i also think that the whole wutai thing will become a red herring and rufus will put the kibosh on it, which will probably piss off shinra execs even further, which creates even further drama and intrigue within the company.
so maybe rufus can see the whispers because he’s about to head down a path that’s not where he’s “meant” to go. maybe diamond weapon won’t blow up his office, because maybe he’ll be redeemed long before advent children.

PP Radio CD Vol. 3 Bonus Comic Strips
I stumbled upon these scans of the various bonus 4koma for PP Radio Vol. 3. Gino is so precious in all of the comic strips~
The content is more or less the same as the radio drama episode each were taken from, but I still tried translating them, hehe. As always, please take these translations with a grain of salt, and please feel free to correct it ( ^ω^ ) ————————————————————

A Study on Adult Socialization [24 hours a day] Sasayama: The perfect club for us is this one! PINK PARADISE! Tonight, it’s my treat! Kougami, Ginoza: Ohhhhh!!
Girl 1: Kyaa~! Dom Peri~! Ginoza: (drinks)
Girl 2: You’re quite the rich one, mister! Kougami: (eats)
Girls: Thank you for your patronage~! Sasayama: Damn…! Someday, I’ll make you pay back what you owe me! You two newbies are unbelievable! ————————————————————

Our Encounter [24 hours a day] Ginoza: Kougami Shinya…you really are something different. Engaging in sports with no particular reason… Kougami: You know my name?
Ginoza: How about you, don’t you know my name? Aren’t you the top 1 in our year? Kougami: Well, I think I’ve seen you somewhere before…
Kougami: Oh!
Kougami: You’re Ginouzannen, right? Or something like that. [1] Ginoza: It’s Ginoza Nobuchika! You said that on purpose, didn’t you?! ————————————————————

This Has No Connection to the Real Story [24 hours a day] Narrator: Ginoza Nobuchika, the Public Safety Bureau - Special Investigations Division 1 super chief. He’s the one who the government bestowed Ginoza-Pass, and who deliberates justice across Japan. Ginoza-Pass: (current level - 10)
Makishima: (dips madeleine in tea) Ginoza: If you dip the madeleine like that, it will become soggy! Ginoza-Pass: /PI-PO-PO-PO-PO/ (rises to 100)
Makishima: (takes time savoring tea) Ginoza: If you take your time drinking a cup of tea, what’s left in the pot will become bitter! Ginoza-Pass: /PI-PO-PO-PO-PO-PO-PO-PO-PO—PIKOON-PIKOON/ (rises to 300)
Narrator: By the way, Ginoza-Pass is the name of a mental-state-detecting stomachache control system in glasses form, that protects the highly-strung Ginoza. Ginoza: Owowowow… Kougami: Are you okay? Tsunemori: …Eehhh…?
———————————————————— [1] “Ginouzannen” is written in katakana, but probably Gino got mad at Kou because it sounds like 技能残念, which may mean “poor technical skills/abilities”.

Huh? A hafu? No. He is Russian, you got it right. He got his Japanese citizenship at the age of 11, in February 2107. This is the first thing written in the personal histrory section (経歴).
