Recently someone on Reddit found a book with this horrible legalese (illegally) prohibiting you from re-selling or even lending it to others

Here are some alternative suggestions for more constructive legalese.

"This book may be given away. In fact, if you enjoyed my book, you're obligated to share it with someone you care deeply about. The magic of reading cries out to be shared, and I am but that magic's humble facilitator. If you didn't enjoy my book, well, I have a thick skin for criticism, and I hope you have a thick skin for when you're mauled by a pack of tigers next week, you bastard-"

"Share this book with fifty people in the next seven days or I'll replace the middle of every Colleen Hoover book with The 120 Days of Sodom and your precious BookTok will never recover"

"This book is a work of fiction. The characters represented herein are the creation of the author. But if it doesn't sell well - perhaps my dread creations shall become less fictional! there's this thing where online leftists will be like "no history book talks about this!" and it's just blatantly untrue, like almost every history book talks about that, just not the specific one the Republican state board of education mandated for use in your middle school. most recently I saw this on a post about how gay people put in concentration camps by the nazis weren't freed after the war and the op was like "no one is ever taught this!" like no I'm sorry. most people who study the Holocaust in basically any depth will encounter that information fairly early. it was in my high school textbooks in Canada. it's in a LOT of the books you could take out from your local library. it will be mentioned in university courses. the hyperbole is not endearing actually

My philosophy for queer labels goes like this

1. Anyone who in good faith uses a label is fine to use it for themselves

2. There is no way to always tell who is using it in good faith

3. Act like everyone is using it in good faith.

4. …including assholes clearly IDing to be an ass. Treating them like they mean it is a quick way to make an asshole get yuckied out and knock it off. If they seem to be committed to the bit, maybe they really mean it

That must sound so bad out of context. No it's this Tiktok meme where, if you're a girl and you do something dumb, you say 'Women don't deserve voting rights teehee.'"

And you'll be like, "That sounds bad." And she'll be like, "No no. It's totally not that bad. It's just a meme. Men say it too. Like if a man does something silly he'll be like, 'I am like those women who do not deserve to vote.'" And you'll be like, "Does that make it better?" And she'll be like, "Well there was one guy who tried to make 'Men shouldn't vote' a popular meme. But it never caught on and also he got yelled at a lot."

And then you drop it there because like, you're harshing the vibe.

The real thing with ADHD is not "I forgot", but that forgetting is this ongoing process. I remembered! And then I forgot.

At ten this (hypothetical) morning I remembered that I have a meeting at six. And then from 11 through 3 I worked on other stuff and had zero thoughts about that meeting. Maybe even thought about what I was gonna do with my evening at home. Got attached to the idea of taking the time to make a good dinner, maybe play some video games.

And then at three I said, "Oh! Fuck!" and remembered again, hopefully long enough to set an alarm. And then I went to the bathroom and remembered that I need to clean the counter and spent twenty minutes cleaning the bathroom and went to get a snack and then at five I said, "OH! FUCK!" and had to scramble to dress like a real adult and get out the door.

It isn't one clean forgetting. It's a constant process of forgetting and then, with an exhausting adrenaline spike, remembering. And then forgetting. Baby, I can forget the same thing more times in a day than you ever forgot your parents' anniversary.

love how at (and up to) a certain point, pets just kinda let you do whatever to them

you grab their paw and shake it a bit and they just look at you like 'you done yet?' if they even bother to acknowledge you

you pick them up and they're just like 'hmmm lets see where this goes'

if they're walking and you gently nudge them, sometimes they'll flop belly-up like 'i WAS walking but i guess this is my life now'

I am forever grateful to an archivist mentor I worked with in grad school for some resume advice she gave me and thought maybe others would also benefit from it.

Keep a Master Resume.

This is not the resume you send out. This is a detailed resume of every job (with dates and location, supervisor and location phone number are a bonus) and as many skills/duties/accomplishments you can possibly think of for each and every one of the jobs and education programs you can think of.

She showed me hers, it was about 25 pages long, and formatted exactly like a regular resume for ease. Every time she would learn a new program/skill, she'd add it. Change in title or duties, add it. Complete something big/special/complicated/new to her/professionally significant, she would add it. This way when she went up for a promotion or raise, she had a detailed record of highlights to pick from to show she deserved it. There was no "when was that? Did I submit that last round of reviews?"

Applying to a new job? Pick and choose items from your Master Resume to plug in to the resume or CV you will be sending based on the job posting. You don't need to rewrite it, just cut and paste relevant details.

every time I mention how many days sober I am I appreciate people congratulating me and telling me to keep up the good work. it is nice. but I also wish that milestones in addiction recovery weren’t still so pinned to length of sobriety/abstinence

yeah yeah I’m 50 days sober who cares. how about the fact that, when I do drink, it tends to be nipped in the bud after two days nowadays instead of weeks or months? how about the fact that drinking has been condensed to a six pack because I’m at the end of my tether, instead of browning out every night? how about my friend who has decided to stop drinking alone, and is actually sticking to that? recovery doesn’t always look like sobriety and I wish it was more normal to talk about that. yknow. when addiction is normal to talk about at all

Maybe this is just me being old, but I genuinely think that, in general, a well-written dialogue scene between two interesting characters is about ten thousand times more entertaining than an action scene.

what they don't tell you is that after you turn 30 you have ocasional but powerful bouts of home ownership fever, which is like baby fever but instead of randomly really wanting a baby you go on zillow and look at modest properties you will nonetheless never be able to afford. and then it passes and you're like wtf was that about. yay time for another $6 coffee to stave off the dread
