there's a secret ryn had never told anyone - she's actually terrified of dying. it's not the act of death itself that she's scared of; it's what comes after - what happens to her; for as much as she screams at the top of her lungs YOU DO NOT OWN ME; she knows what happens to a bhaalspawn after their death.

but if there is one thing ryn has never done and never will do: let her fear control her.

so she looks at nim and offers her a light grin. does she feel she needs permission to be herself? as a bhaalspawn, when she was younger - this answer would be a great resounding yes. but the older she gets, the less she cares about this. in her younger days the way she dressed, styled herself - it was more in a way to show herself as not a threat. she was used to the style worn in candlekeep by wizards and monks, so she would stick to wizard and sorcerer robes. wear more delicate colours, purples and blues, nothing too harsh, nothing that stands out. trying to look like she's not a threat, not a danger. no one would look at her and think she's a monster. (it didn't work. someone called her an evil monster because she said her favourite colour was blue)

but as she got older, and she learned that even if she conformed to "the perfect image" that people would still judge her when they discover she was a bhaalspawn. so the older she got the more she started to experiment with expressing her individuality. she ditched the wizard robes, experimented with colours, found she loved the red/gold/black colour combo. eventually she did stop giving a shit about keeping up that 'perfect' image, and leaned more into the style she wears during bg3, which is very not traditional and simple

she still often feels like she needs permission to be herself, especially in the ways that she acts. if she gets too violent, too angry, that people look at her like she's a monster - but she knows that everyone are monsters, so she's better at ignoring that desire for permission
