The second a newcomer shows up in the picture, Jaehyun’s almost sense of comfort is instantly gone. Hesitant, he takes a few steps back, practically hiding behind Wynn. He shouldn’t feel this way, really— in fact, he was pretty embarrassed by it but he couldn’t help himself. The presence of strangers always made him uneasy, even when he desperately wished be could be more open. He looks at Hannah with big wide eyes and shyly points to Bethany. 

“Here.... she’s the one who needs help” he says, his voice almost quiet.

Jaehyun only laughs some more. “All of this is so fascinating to me. Like this isn’t some kind of fiction, it happened, this is all things that people thought and felt, and you were able to live through that…. that’s, like, sick” this was much different from what you could find in history books, because those would only relate the main events, not every day life details like this…. now, he was even more eager to learn more, but he stopped himself from asking any more questions, at least for now.

“I’m surprised no one curses anymore. Considering the amount of… let’s call them rough moments people go through, I feel like a swear word every now and then could make a different… or at the very least make someone laugh”

“Well, you’re on the right ship,” Grace giggles. “In the universe my mom came from, swearing never went away, so they all have a problem. Then a lot of the Federation crew have their own ties to swearing, whether because they’re related to Rebecca or whatever. So honestly, you should probably get used to it.”

“That’s pretty fuckin’ accurate,” Hannah says as she steps in, in her protective gear, smiling warmly. “I’m Dr. Hannah McCoy, hi guys. Here to give your friend an antibiotic and scan everyone into the system, all right?”

Jaehyun only laughs some more. “All of this is so fascinating to me. Like this isn’t some kind of fiction, it happened, this is all things that people thought and felt, and you were able to live through that.... that’s, like, sick” this was much different from what you could find in history books, because those would only relate the main events, not every day life details like this.... now, he was even more eager to learn more, but he stopped himself from asking any more questions, at least for now.

“Oh my god, are you for real? That’s…. that’s absolutely insane! A robot uprising….” Jaehyun couldn’t help but giggle at the thought. Clearly, technology and the people’s mentality had evolved a lot in almost 300 years, and it fascinated him. “So did you just not let robots do anything for you in your era? Like you did everything… by yourselves? And if you were afraid of alien invasions, that means that you guys lived isolated on your own planet, without any knowledge of other living beings? Because that sounds weird” he wondered how it was like to live in that era, to adopt such a different lifestyle. He almost wished he could experience it just to see how bizarre it was. 

“I think I’ve heard about swearing, but I dunno, no one really does it anymore. There’s probably a reason for it, but I’m not too sure. How do you know when to use it, though? Because I’ve heard it has more than one use.” 

“Well, yes and no. We didn’t have technology for half of what you guys do now, like replicators,” Grace shakes her head. “We did use technology for a lot but we were simultaneously afraid of it. I knew a kid in school who told us one time the family’s coffee maker turned on by itself in the middle of the night and he and his friends smashed it with baseball bats.”

Clearing her throat, she shrugs. “Alien stuff was different in my universe anyways. We’d had a couple of actual attempted invasions by the time I left it, and we had aliens who fought to protect the planet too. I know in this universe, Earth was pretty isolated until they achieved warp speeds, too, but I don’t really know much about that.”

At the questions about swearing, she giggles a bit. “All depends on the context of the situation and the sentence. I don’t know how to explain it though, because several swear words work in the exact same scenarios. It’s just kinda something that you work out naturally for yourself, I guess? Shit, it’s hard to explain.” She shrugs.

I don’t think that makes a lot of sense, but then again, neither does all of this” Jaehyun rambles, his eyes now wide in pure fascination. He clears his throat. “Sorry, I get really… carried away with these kind of things. I dunno, I like learning about things that practically seem so…. inexplicable, y’know? Like it gives me something to ponder about when things get rough, sorta. Plus, it’s just cool overall” he smiles slightly, finally relaxing a bit.  

“Oh, but man, the world you used to live in must seem like….. almost ancient now. Like technology and just life in general has evolved so much since then. That or our actual world must seem impossibly advanced.”

“No, no, it’s fine,” Grace laughs. “I mean, what else are we gonna do right now?” She motions around them, eyes widening and gasping. “Holy crap, dude you have no idea. I’m– I’m gonna be honest with you, I never told my mom this so if you guys tell anyone you’re dead to me, but I was scared of replicators for a good two months.”

“Replicators,” Victoria gapes. “As in, ask the computer for food replicators?”

“Yeah,” Grace nods with a laugh. “Look, in my era, if you didn’t apologize and pack bond with your robots, you were resigning yourself to be a slave to our AI overlords some day. That was the media ‘thing’, that was what my era was afraid of. Like the 60s were scared of alien invasion, we were scared of the robot uprising. And zombies. Ordering the computer to make me something scared the shit out of me.”

Wynn laughs, clutching his sides and bending over a bit, wheezing for air. “That’s crazy, that’s so crazy. And you swear, too, like– that went out of style a good century ago!”

“So I’ve been told!” Grace flings her arms with a laugh. “I was told that curse words slowly became less popular as society advanced and evolved and that’s just bizarre to me. Like, I was from New York City. You didn’t go anywhere without hearing some random passerby cussing someone or something out. And now that just… doesn’t happen anymore?”

“I’m sorry, what?” This time, Jaehyun just stares at her in complete disbelief. “So you’re like… from the past, but also since you time jumped, it’s like you skipped through literal decades of actual time…. so you’re like technically a really old being in the body of a young person, that’s….” he brushes his hair with his fingers as he attempts to process it all. “I’m just getting used to the concept of teleportation and alternate universes, and mutants, and now there’s time jumps? Is there actually something impossible at this point?” His eyebrows are furrowed, but really, he’s fascinated by all of it. 

“What’s funny is depending on how you look at it, I’m either 16 years old, because we left my universe when I was 13 and it’s been 3 years since then, 288 years old, because I was born in 2002 and it’s now 2290, or 3 years old, because I legally did not exist until three years ago.” Grace giggles. “So right now, you guys are hanging out with someone who is simultaneously your age, a toddler, and old enough to be your several greats-grandma.”

Wynn shakes his head. “That’s insane. And so cool. You probably didn’t understand anything when you got here.”

“I still don’t sometimes,” Grace laughs. “The stuff you guys are probably completely used to still confuses the hell out of me. Cuz my mom is from a similar time period to you guys, so she didn’t have to adjust very much when we got here, and she forgets sometimes that I still do. And like, learning about my own time period in history class is beyond bizarre, like people talk about it like it was this horrific ancient time and like… that was just life for me, y’know?”

Jaehyun blinks, taking all the information in and nodding along as he listens. “Okay…. okay that makes sense.. I think” he chews on his lip as he lets the new concepts stir in his head. All of this was so foreign for him, practically illogical— though he supposed that the definition of logic was rather relative. 

“Wait so if you’re from another dimension, doesn’t… that mean that there’s a version of you in this dimension? Because that kind of interaction would be either really cool or really freaky” he decided not to think too much about it before his brain wandered too deep on a subject that was pretty abstract, at least to him. “Either way, teleportation sounds cool… it probably makes going to places way more convenient too.”

Grace shrugs. “I know there was one in the universe my mom came from. She said they met the other me on a planet they’d gotten stuck on once, and the other me helped them get the ship’s chief engineer out of a deadly sentencing for dry-humping a statue. I don’t know the full story, all I know is that the other me– Lysella– got brought to the Orville and helped them find a way to stop their society from voting that he was a bad person. I don’t know about here though. I mean, there probably is, but we haven’t run into her.”

She sighs softly. “The alternate universe thing isn’t the weird part. The time travel thing is. I’m actually from almost 300 years into Earth’s past from today, your present-day. In my universe, the concept of interdimensional beings and travel wasn’t very uncommon, in fact was kind of standard. The time travel thing isn’t too new either, but it’s weirder to me than universe travel.”

“Wait, wait, wait. So you’re like… over 300 years old?” Victoria’s eyebrows furrow.

“If you wanna get technical, based on the year I was born, yeah. Just about. I was born in the Earth year 2002, and we were picked up in 2015. So, uh, 2290′s a bit of a jump. Technically we entered this universe in 2287, again by Earth’s calendar, but my point stands.”

It was easy to talk to people when they were on the other side of a screen, but now there were lots of them walking around near them, stealing a few glances every once in a while. It made him feel slightly uneasy— mostly because he didn’t know anything about who they were nor what their intentions were. Part of him was inclined to trust them as they had, after all, helped him and the rest get off their planet, but he was also awry to do that, because appearances could be misleading. He took a quick look around, attempting to familiarize himself with his surroundings to ease his anxiety.

“So um… let me see if I get this right” his voice was low among the rest. “You come from another universe… which means that you somehow got transported from another dimension which, I don’t know how the hell that works but okay, and then this also begs the question how many alternate universes even exist….” he starts to think out loud, fumbling with his fingers. “And…. how do you even teleport? Do you just, like, think of where you wanna go and you just go? Or is there a whole process? Can you do indefinitely or is there a limit? Does it even hurt?” He stops himself almost sheepishly, clearing his throat. “Sorry, I ask a lot of questions. I can… I can stop, I’m just very confused”

Grace smiles. “I don’t mind the questions. And it’s not like we have a lot else to do right now. So to answer to the best of my ability…”

She grabs at each of her fingers to count off the questions with one hand. “Actually, this whole ship and half its crew came from another dimension, too. The Federation’s poster girl, Rebecca, is a scientist with a focus on extradimensional travel and connections. The universe this ship came from scattered across the multiverse and she met their chief of security before the war. She worked with this ship’s deputy chief engineer, Lily Scott, who’s studied the use of… I think it’s called red matter?” Grace wrinkles her nose. “Anyways, the stuff that caused Nero to travel through time and blow up the Kelvin. Miss Scott worked with Miss Rebecca to find this ship and crew in my universe and brought them here. Then they brought me, too, because my mom adopted me during the three years they lived in my universe. I don’t know how many possible universes there are, but I’m guessing it’s pretty infinite. Um…”

Grace pauses and moves on. “It can take some pretty intense focus on where I wanna be and a general idea of where I’m going, actually. I had to see a map of the surface to get to you guys to know where I was going. If I’ve been somewhere before I can just think of it and go there, but if I haven’t it takes a lot more effort and concentration, a lot of what I do comes from visualizing, so if I’ve never seen the place, it can be difficult. No limit, and it doesn’t really hurt? People usually think it does because of the noise that goes with it but I don’t feel anything, really. There’s kind of like a whoosh of air whenever I land somewhere? Like I kicked up the air or disturbed it somehow? But it doesn’t really hurt.”

Despite the previous warning, Jaehyun can’t help but yelp as Grace suddenly appears behind. He stares in confusion, blinking. “Oh… oh wow okay that’s a thing.” He takes a few steps in direction of the others, still anxious and slightly cautious. “So… are you just able to teleport us all at once somehow? Because if not…. I’m willing to go last.” The idea of potentially staying alone was definitely unappealing, but he was willing to make himself wait longer if it meant that the others, especially Bethany, would be safe quicker.

“I can take all of you. C’mon.” Grace smiles. “It’s okay. Let’s get you guys up to the Orville.”

Wynn grabs Jaehyun’s arm and pulls him over with Grace, taking ahold of her other hand. Grace nods and smiles, clearing her throat. “One, two, three…”

And with a soft pop, they vanish and reappear within the confines of the ship’s quarantine. Claire immediately walks in wearing protective gear. “Okay, everyone, this is just a precaution to make sure no one’s carrying the virus from your colony, okay? Where’s the sick one?”

“Over here,” Victoria raises a hand and points to Bethany. “She’s had a fever the past few days and her breathing’s gotten really bad since yesterday.”

Claire rushes over to Bethany with a tricorder quickly and scans her, frowning and calling back orders to the nurse, getting the hypospray a few minutes later and administering it to the girl. “This should help the fever. I’m going to run this data through the computer for an accurate diagnosis. You guys are gonna be fine, okay?”

She gets up and heads back out quickly. Grace smiles shyly at the group. Given her exposure to the four, it was in everyone’s best interest if she stayed in here, too, she knew that. “What’re you guys’ names? I’m Grace Grayson.”

“I’m Victoria,” the dark-haired girl immediately pipes up. “That’s Bethany, Wynn, and Jaehyun,” as she points to each of the others. “So, what exactly is a mutant? How does something from old comic books show up on a starship?”

Grace clears her throat. “Uh, right. I’m… I’m not really from this universe. I’m from an alternate universe where there were, uh, superheroes and villains and stuff. Mutants have this one mutated gene called the X-gene that granted them superhuman abilities– flight, weather manipulation, immortality, regeneration, that sort of stuff. I’m… adopted. My mom was being monitored by this superhero… agency, I guess you could call it, and when she went off their radar they took me into custody for when she came back for my rescue. During the rescue I just…” She shrugs. “I was stressed out. I just wanted to get to my mom. I guess it was enough of a stressor that my mutation kicked in and… now I teleport.”

Jaehyun’s eyes were glued to the monitor, observing the different figures that were discussing on mute. There were… so many of them, some of which looked inna way he had never seen before. It made him anxious— the idea of being surrounded by so many people, strangers no less, and the idea that maybe they wouldn’t be able to save them at all. He nervously started nibbling on his thumb until he heard a voice again.

“Yeah, yeah, we’re still here.” Not that they really had anywhere else to go anyways. He tried to keep his eyes on whoever was showing up on the monitor to calm himself down. “I uh- I’m not sure what we should do now, but…” he pauses, taking a deep breath. “I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’re ready to do basically anything to get out of here. No… no pressure though, I’m willing to wait.”

Ed sighs. “We’ve got a bit of an unusual solution headed your way. My first officer’s daughter, Grace, she’s…” He wrinkles his nose and sighs, “I’m gonna just be straight with you on this, Grace is what’s called a mutant. Like from the old, old Earth comic books. Grace has the ability to teleport, and to bring people with her when she does. Grace is gonna teleport down to you guys and bring you back up straight to sickbay. We’re gonna get you guys out of there, okay?”

He smiles reassuringly. “I promise, it’s all gonna be okay. Your friend’s gonna be fine.”

Bethany coughs again, much harder, and Victoria winces a bit, looking up, worried, biting her lip. Ed hears it, too. “Hang tight.”

He turns when Kelly and Grace come back to the bridge. “Grace. Did your mom catch you up on everything?”

The girl nods, wide-eyed, looking at the screen and the boy on it. Her age, he was her age.

She rushes over to peek at Addi’s screen and see where they are on a map. Biting her lip, she looks up and steps onscreen. “Okay. Don’t freak out, but I’m on my way… right… now.”

And she vanishes with a pop from the bridge, reappearing behind the boys with another pop. Victoria jumps, startled, but clears her throat and pretends she’s fine. “Okay, even warning us, that was a little freaky.”

“Yeah, so I’ve heard,” Grace answers, going over to the girls, looking at Bethany, worried. “Come on, come on,” she waves the other two over, setting a hand on Victoria’s shoulder.

The second the computer emitted the slightest bit of signal, Jaehyun, who had previously been sitting on the floor, was almost too quick to jump on his feet and run towards it. His feet almost tripped on each other as he made his way towards the computer, grabbing on the closest surface. Fumbling over the controls, he eventually managed to hit the right button. “Hello! Hello yes this is Jaehyun, from Federation colony Kasaxton-4. Can you hear me? We need…. we need help, please help us” his voice was shaky and weak as he spoke, almost in disbelief at the situation. He glanced back at where the others were, his expression showing a mix of relief and anxiety at the same time.

The bridge stands still.

Everyone looks around at everyone else in shock at the scene onscreen. Kids. The lifesigns… were kids?

“That’s… okay,” Ed definitely was not prepared for this situation, which is basically how his entire career has been so far. “Okay, okay, okay… this is Captain Ed Mercer, Jaehyun, is there an adult we can talk to about your colony’s status?”

“There aren’t any,” Wynn gets up and joins Jaehyun, looking at the monitor, at the captain of the ship. “Some adults died in the attacks, but most of them… the attacks exposed something in the ground that got the adults sick, and they couldn’t fight it off. There’s no one left. Just the four of us– me, Jaehyun, Victoria, and Bethany. Bethany’s sick, we need help.”

“Okay, that’s… fantastic,” Ed mutters under his breath sarcastically. “Okay. Where are you guys right now?”

“We’re inside the central building,” Wynn answers. Ed glances to Addi, who nods in confirmation before they frown.

“Too much interference, captain,” they inform him.

Ed nods and looks back. “Okay. Is it safe for you guys to move outside? We can’t get a transporter lock on you inside.”

Bethany coughs a bit, leaning her head into Victoria’s touch, barely breathing. Victoria looks up at them and shakes her head. Wynn sighs and looks back at the screen. “I don’t think so, Bethany’s pretty weak.”

“Okay. Okay, okay, okay– I will be back on with you guys shortly, okay? Don’t go anywhere, but I need to brainstorm with my crew about getting you out of there. Okay? It’s gonna be okay. Mercer out,” Ed says, and Addi cuts the communications gently.

“Ed, we can’t just go down there,” Kelly sighs. “Even if we could get a transporter lock, I’m not so sure that would be viable.”

“Why the hell not?” Ed looks frustrated.

“Because, even if they didn’t get sick from whatever it was that has the planet in quarantine, those kids could be carriers for that virus. We need a way to limit exposure as much as we can. I just…” She runs a hand through her hair.

“What about young Miss Grace?” Isaac asks. The captain and commander look to him.

“Excuse me?” Kelly asks, as Ed says, “WHAT?”

“Forgive my bluntness, but it may be that she is your best hope of success,” Isaac argues. “Her mutation allows her to teleport and bring others she is in contact with with her. She could easily teleport down to the group and bring them back up directly into the quarantine in sickbay, from which Drs Finn, McCoy, Tayen, and Pike could perform a full medical scan and provide aid as needed.”

Ed pauses and sighs. “Kel, you’re not gonna like me saying this…”

“He’s right,” she sighs in frustration. “I know, I know. Let me get her. You check back in on those kids.”

He nods and sits back down. “Mx. Janeway, onscreen.” Once they’re re-established. “Jaehyun, kids, are you still there?”

“My god,” Ed mutters under his breath.

It’s certainly befitting of the situation, seeing the planet from orbit. There was allegedly a Federation colony down there. Or, well, the remains of one. “Any lifesigns?” Ed glances to Addi at their station.

“Captain…” They frown. “I’m picking up an automated signal.”

“Play it,” he orders.

“–tine. Please be advised, do not approach. This colony has signs of an unknown virus that has proven extremely hazardous and has been placed under quarantine. Please be advised, do not approach.”

Addi clicks it off after a moment, frowning at their screen and gasping. “Definitely life signs, captain, but… not very many.”

“Hail the surface,” he orders. “Let’s see if we can establish contact.”

Victoria looks up from where she’s dabbing a cloth at Bethany’s forehead at the signal on the computer. Her fever hadn’t broken yet, and hope for her looked bleak. She looks at the boys, chewing her lip a moment and then nodding for them to respond.

Still makes me a Kirk though, but I feel like it’s an important details” she really didn’t mind going around saying she was adopted, really. She wasn’t even careful of what kind of information she divulged about herself.
