6th Biennial of Painting – On Landscapes from Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens on Vimeo.

In 2018, the Biennial of Painting is at its sixth edition. The three regional museums of the Lys region are once more working together to exhibit paintings from the last 150 years. This time the Biennial will focus on the landscape, a genre with a longstanding tradition in history, and which is still today a hot topic for many contemporary artists in relation to, among other things, ecology, politics and globalization. On Landscapes

Art, modernity and the Lys region have been interconnected for more than a century and a half - from the 19th century landscape painters, the Flemish expressionists and the New Vision to contemporary creations. In MDD, the landscapes of Constant Permeke and Valerius De Saedeleer, two artists from the museum’s own collection, will serve as a starting point to link the past to the present.

Besides painting, the landscape represented through the moving image will also be covered by means of a number of contemporary films selected by curator Cis Bierinckx. The 7 selected filmworks by Doug Aitken, James Benning, Sebastián Díaz Morales, Lukas Marxt, Enrique Ramírez, Meggy Rustamova and Beatriz Santiago Muñozfor the exhibition engage with the landscape both cinematographically and thematically from a personal perspective, and with much narrative freedom.

The new collection catalogue, “De collectie Irma en Jules Dhondt-Dhaenens. Een voorstelling”, follows nearly three decades after the previous edition. The publication is entirely dedicated to the collection of Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens — the one hundred and twenty-five works collected by its founders, Irma and Jules Dhondt-Dhaenens.

The catalog deliberately avoids a chronological exploration of styles and -isms, allowing the works to engage with each other in an unforced and dynamic manner within twenty-two clusters.

Inge Braeckman, Bart Cassiman, Chantal Pattyn, Herwig Todts, Kia Tsakiridis, Karen Van Godtsenhoven, Olga Van Oost, Cathérine Verleysen, and Bart Verschaffel contribute texts that shed new light on the heritage collection of MDD.

The sculptures “Life in the Farm” and “Zuchinelo” are part of a larger series of dancing figures that draw from architecture, folklore and mythological elements. The series departs from religious, physical, and socio-political connotations of the age-old circular dance.

The slide projection Kunstgeschichte des Bückens (Art History of Bending) arranges art-historical portrayals of tasks commonly regarded as menial labour, including gathering, harvesting, mending, processing, wash- ing, and tending to children. The images include what are now iconic works (such as Gustave Courbet, Paul Gauguin, Hans Holbein, Jean-François Millet, Camille Pissarro) as well as works ranging from artefacts from ancient Egypt, Roman mosaics and miniatures from the Middle Ages, to photographs from the mid-19 th to mid-20th century.

Since both ‘land’ and ‘labour’ are politically and culturally heavily loaded subjects, an artwork that captures this tension tests the possibilities of representation itself. Representation has both a political and an aesthetic meaning – the representation of landscapes is subject to both.

Zes kunstenaars realiseren ieder tien unieke werken op A4-formaat die te koop zijn aan de balie van het museum. Dit idee komt van Jan Hoet, die destijds met een stapel papier onder zijn arm langs kunstenaars ging om met de verkoop van deze tekeningen zijn museum te ondersteunen.

Een A4 is in zijn handzaamheid een klein wonder: hoe vaak je het ook dubbelvouwt, het behoudt dezelfde verhouding. Elke twee weken zal werk van een andere kunstenaar aan deze reeks toegevoegd worden en te koop zijn aan de balie en vervolgens via MDD’s webshop.

Marie Cloquet realiseert de tweede reeks voor perfect ratios: een serie van verschillende schuilplekken die op dezelfde schaal zijn uitgevoerd. Dit vervolgt een langer lopend onderzoek naar geïmproviseerde architecturale beschuttingen voor dieren, zogenaamde ‘sheds’.

Deze druk op zilvergelatine (zilverbromide) betekende eind 19e eeuw het begin van de moderne fotografie, en is hier nog verder bewerkt met aquarel.

Occupying the entire museum, Magali Reus’ solo exhibition On Like Scenery (30.10.22—12.02.23) brings together new photographic and sculptural works alongside paintings selected and staged by the artist from MDD’s collection.

Responding directly to the museum’s pastoral setting, On Like Scenery reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in transformation and how different spaces, symbols and objects determine specific situations

From 26 June to 2 October 2022, MDD, mudel en Roger Raveel Museum present the 8th edition of the Biennial of Painting. MDD’s exhibition, entitled The ‘t’ is Silent, is curated by curator Gabi Ngcobo and artist Oscar Murillo.

Painting, historically regarded as the ‘royal road’ of artistic practice, has over the centuries meant that the art form, alongside drawing, served as a foundation for artistic education, where such education was available. The history of western art pedagogy in colonised places across the world often reveals that the colonial government’s rule was indirectly played out in how formal artistic pedagogies were organised. The recent calls for decolonial education around the world – fuelled by the Black Lives Matter and other affiliated movements, as well as the pandemic – have inspired reconsiderations of the human condition and the politics of care. At the same time, these social movements have coincided with a new rise in representational painting that has been critiqued, in the words of artist Olu Oguibe, as “jolly, no-worries, all sunshine and flowers, ebullient wealthy middle-class representation of Blackness...”

The ‘t’ is Silent operates adjacent to this renewed emergence. Departing from the work of Jenny Montigny in MDD’s collection and Oscar Murillo’s Disrupted Frequencies, this exhibition focuses on artists and works that record time differently, works that are about painting or that think through the medium of painting as a form of journaling – of working things through and of learning anew.

“The artists featured in this exhibition face history and the present by embracing ‘trouble’ and a kind of ‘paining’ that forces one to decide, in a time marked indecision. Where objects disappear, they are replaced by feelings and energy; where they appear they are being dissected in order to uncover another world of possibilities.” – Gabi Ngcobo Curators

Oscar Murillo (1986, Valle del Cauca, Colombia) is based in various locations. His body of work demonstrates a sustained emphasis on the notion of cultural exchange and the multiple ways in which ideas, languages, and even everyday items are displaced, circulated, and increasingly intermingled.

Gabi Ngcobo (1974, eThekwini, South Africa) engages in collaborative artistic, curatorial, and educational projects in South Africa and on an international scope. She is a founding member of the Johannesburg based collaborative platform NGO – Nothing Gets Organised. NGO focuses on processes of self-organisation that take place outside of predetermined structures, definitions, contexts, or forms. About the Biennial of Painting

Since 2008, MDD, mudel and Roger Raveel Museum have simultaneously presented paintings from Belgium and abroad every two years. This 'celebration of painting' always departs from the context and the collection of the three museums. For this 8th edition, each museum explores the history of painting in its own unique way. The result is three exhibitions, for which each museum invites one or more guest curators who, based on an individual selection, shed light on the characteristics of the medium of painting and link it to current themes.

The Biennial of Painting is an ideal cultural excursion or weekend trip for the whole family. The three museums are located in a straight line barely 13 kilometres from each other. Combine a visit to the three museums with a combi-ticket and a cycling or walking tour through the beautiful Leie region.

The recently published monograph La Présentation des absents (Editions Galerie Templon, 2021) sets up an encounter between two imaginaries: the artist’s and that of the man he considers to be the unrivalled master of modern French painting, Édouard Manet.

The book was presented with a conversation between Jan Van Imschoot, Barbara De Coninck, Jeroen Laureyns and Kathleen Weyts on Sunday 21 november 2021.

Terre Thaemlitz - Interstices from Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens on Vimeo.

Met trots presenteert Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens het werk Interstices van kunstenaar, DJ en spreker Terre Thaemlitz. De installatie, bestaand uit video, geluid en tekst, is speciaal voor de Woning Van Wassenhove opnieuw geconfigureerd, na de oorspronkelijke realisatie in 2000-2003.

Uit het Interstices album wordt de audiocompositie Homeward.004 in een loop gespeeld. Dit is gecreëerd door individuele frames in een audio golfvorm te selecteren, te verwijderen en te herhalen – een methode die zij ‘framing’ noemt. Ook primaire passages zijn verwijderd; zoals de vocalen, waarmee het dominante discours in popmuziek figuurlijk wordt gedempt om tussenliggende geluiden te kunnen horen.

In de video Interstices verwerkt Thaemlitz muziek, tekst en beelden van zijn gelijknamige CD tot een montage die op een openhartige manier de tussenruimten tussen sexes, seksuele geaardheden en andere identiteitsconstructies onderzoekt. Interseksualiteit, chirurgische geslachtsverandering, seksuele handelingen en transseksuele carrièremogelijkheden zijn thema’s die hier het filter van private en publieke verwachtingen ondergaan.

Terre Thaemlitz (geboren in 1968, woonachtig in Chiba, Japan) is een bekroonde multimediaproducent, schrijver, spreker, pedagoog, audio remixer, DJ en eigenaar van het Comatonse Recordings label. Haar werk combineert een kritische blik op identiteitspolitiek – waaronder gender, seksualiteit, klasse, taal, etniciteit en ras – met een voortdurende analyse van de sociaal-economische aspecten van commerciële mediaproductie.

Natascha Drabbe, oprichter en directeur van Iconic Houses Network, Amaryllis Jacobs van MANIERA en kunstenaar Jonas Vansteenkiste bespreken de uitdagingen die gepaard gaan met het organiseren van kunst- en designtentoonstellingen in particuliere monumenten. Monumentale architectuur daagt kunstenaars, ontwerpers en curatoren uit tot het vinden van innovatieve manieren om kunstwerken te tonen. Hoe deze in een constructieve dialoog te brengen? Hoe kunnen we ervoor zorgen dat de architectuur meer wordt dan louter decor? De talk wordt gemodereerd door Laurens Otto.

Natascha Drabbe is directeur en oprichter van het Iconic Houses Network. Ze studeerde architectuurgeschiedenis aan de Universiteit Utrecht, publiceert, werkt als curator, geeft lezingen en neemt deel aan ontwerp- en architectuurjury's in binnen- en buitenland. Iconic Houses is een internationaal non-profit netwerk dat moderne museumwoningen, architectenhuizen, kunstenaarshuizen en ateliers,uit de 20e eeuw verbindt en publiek toegankelijk maakt.

Amaryllis Jacobs richtte in 2014 samen met Kwinten Lavigne MANIERA op. MANIERA geeft opdrachten aan architecten en kunstenaars om meubels en gebruiksvoorwerpen te ontwikkelen. MANIERA kristalliseert affiniteiten tussen architecten en kunstenaars uit in nieuwe ontwerpvoorstellen. MANIERA organiseert tentoonstellingen op locaties met een uitzonderlijke architecturale betekenis, onder meer in Hôtel Wolfers, Brussel (2015), Huis De Beir (Knokke, 2020) en recentelijk in het Roelantshuis, Sint-Martens-Lennik.

Jonas Vansteenkiste is een beeldend kunstenaar en curator. Na zijn studies Media Kunst aan het KASK, Gent, voltooide hij een Master Na Masteronderzoek in de kunst aan St-Lucas Antwerpen. Sindsdien onderzoekt Vansteenkiste in zijn werk de mentale en de fysieke ruimte. Het begrip ‘huis/thuis’ is een motief in zijn oeuvre. Met zijn recente project Membrane verkende hij recent de architectuur en de verhalen van de vroegere en huidige bewoners van de Villa Gaverzicht in Waregem en het belang van modernistisch erfgoed.
