Call for Submissions for May 10th MFNO
We're happy to announce the next Music For No One will be May 10th at the APK. We are open for submissions for performances, poster art and looking for volunteers to help with documentation. The series will be happening more frequently after this date but the format is changing a little. Instead of doing 11 performances we're going to cut it down to 5 or 6 which will allow more time for performances and more space for larger groups. Also because we're aiming to document each event now, performing acts will only be allowed to play every 3rd show.. so if you play this one, you won't be eligible to play for another 2 shows. We will constantly be open for submissions but if you want to be a part of the May 10th event, try and let us know by April 8th.聽 If you are interested in performing, creating art for the event or volunteering just send an email to聽 [email protected]
keep it interesting,
Cailen

Patrick Gregory talks about Florentine Cruise and the #lndont music scene today compared to the mid-late 90's
Tumblr media
Back in 1996 Patrick Gregory founded the London band Florentine Cruise.聽 After a long hiatus Patrick has decided to bring the band back together to perform at the next Music For No One / Hide and Seek Show and Tell on February 23rd at The APK.聽 In this interview we talk a bit about the music, London and some then and now stuff.聽 Patrick will be playing with Tim Glasgow of Exit 2012 and goldsmithing wizard slash bassplayer Jason Bellchamber.
---
Cailen: Have you always lived in London Ontario?
Patrick: Yes mostly, I lived in Montreal for a short while a little over a decade ago. I've always kind of subscribed to the Greg Curnoe "regionalist" idea that anybody can make art and music in a place like London, Ontario.
Cailen: Florentine Cruise was active in the mid to late 90's, what was the music and art scene in London like back then compared to now?
Patrick: I think the music scene was a bit more diverse in terms of the styles and genres of music that were able to be heard on any given night of the week. A lot of this had to do with places like the Embassy Hotel or the Brunswick Hotel which no longer exist. If you look at a random Embassy concert calendar from 1996 its impressive how diverse the musical acts were. If you were a new band, it wasn't very hard to get a gig at a place like the Embassy or the Wick and people would just show up to see your band play. London currently has probably the best music scene that its had since the mid-nineties which is encouraging. There are a lot of talented people making music here but I still wish we had some more established venues to showcase that talent. The Wick and the Embassy were sort of these London institutions and it was fairly easy to just show up and be accepted as part of that heritage. It seems like its harder for new bands these days. They need to carve out that space for themselves and its really great to see people doing that in this city and being successful these days.
Cailen: What were some of your influences that got you into making music?
Patrick: I think generally in my past there are so many musical influences that its really hard to list them. For Florentine Cruise specifically I think there is no doubt that I was influenced by bands like Slowdive, Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine. At the time, in the mid nineties I was listening to a lot of that stuff, but I wanted to take that idea and blend it with a more improv approach because I was also really getting into the Nihilist Spasm Band at the time as well.
Cailen: The only album I could find online was your self titled 1998 release. Were there other albums or releases aside from this?
Patrick: Yes I did release a couple of other albums but they were not as widely distributed, I think we had a distributor for the first record but I just did short runs of subsequent records. I also have a really big library of old unreleased demos and material that I may go back to at some point and either re-record or release online.
Cailen: You're playing with Jason Bellchamber and Tim Glasgow, were they members of Florentine Cruise before?
Patrick: The first Florentine Cruise album was recorded on my own over the course of 8 months before I started university. Jason Bellchamber joined shortly after the completion of that record as part of the live band and we played a number of shows. I was doing graphic design for Bellchamber's record label EK records and we had similar musical tastes. Growing up in London we both liked the Spasm Band. The band changed to a more improvisational approach during that time. A bass player named Christopher Girvan joined as well and we became a three piece. Tim Glasgow didn't play in the band but he was definitely helping us out a lot at the time. We would play shows and he would help us with sound and he was playing in other bands like "Space City USA." I learned a lot from Tim, he is a huge presence in the city and has helped so many artists over the years.
Cailen: In revisiting the project after a number of years I imagine you have access to a few tools you might not have had before. What are some things that are making things easier for you or perhaps more challenging?
Patrick: I've tried to keep it as simple as possible. There were a lot of complex guitar sounds and samples that I used on previous recordings. For this MFNO event, we will just be playing guitar, bass and drums. If I do some more Florentine Cruise recordings in the future I think I would look at adding some more analogue synths. That's something I wanted to do at the time but I didn't have all that good a grasp of creating the sounds. Now I think I could achieve that better as I've learned more over the years about sound.
Cailen: You also DJ as Patrick The Bunny, can you name a few albums, songs or artists you've been listening to a lot lately?
Patrick: I've been really into older Soul music lately. I've also been posting mixes on a blog called the Supreme Court of Canada run by Toronto film director Scott Cudmore and METZ guitarist/singer Alex Edkins. The idea there is just posting really good music whatever the genre or time period it was created. Its just simply compiling and playing the tracks I really like and want other people to hear. I've also been involved in a monthly event called GEN POP with another London DJ "Boyfriend Material" aka Geoff Bardwell, the idea there is just to create a really fun monthly party and fundraise for a local group called Open Closet, at those events I play a large mix of older dance music, disco and newer house and techno.
Cailen: What is your favourite restaurant in London and what do you order there?
Patrick: That's an easy one. "Shiki Japanese" and I always get the "Party Tray B Deluxe" I'm also really enjoying the Church Key Bistro as well, the lamb curry is really good.
Cailen: And the most important question, do you like pineapple on your pizza?Patrick: The idea of pineapple on pizza is abhorrent to me! Sorry!
---
Thanks for your awesome answers Patrick!
So I guess now I know who not to invite to my Hawaiian Style pizza party..

Line up for HSST for February 23rd 2013
It's time to announce the line up for the HSST open stage! So far the line up will be: Derek Brooks - Derek Brooks - aka ORB aka Boris Yurnamir aka Oleg Olafson - Derek is a staple performer at HSST and has performed at almost all of the events to date. His performances are never the same and are often the ones most talked about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdBmPuywHz0
Quinn Read-Baxter - slow motion, haunting, soft, warm but also somewhat cold.. Quinn's music makes me think of a moment frozen in time or one of those dreams where you're running but you just can't seem to move very fast https://soundcloud.com/quinnreadbaxter
Gym Zsahib - This is a James Kirkpatrick aka Thesis solo project.聽 If it's anything like this video I think we're in for an awesome sonic attack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ml2SFdqIU 聽 Holden Main - When I think of Holden Main I think of broken mirror.聽 His words are filled with vivid imagery.聽 It's not always nice and easy to observe - you can get cut picking up the pieces. http://r3.ca/0PYt 聽 Bill Pond - "Bill Pond is a solo artist living in London, Ontario. He has been slowly gathering his thoughts and sounds over the past several years. A slow step into the light will reveal the body of his music, one limb at a time." https://www.youtube.com/emptyroomarts Los Hechiceros - "Formed in 2004 in depths of the La Brea Tar Pits, Los Hechiceros is a band of Musicians that practice once a week playing whatever instruments they please. Usually the line up is Peter Thompson on Percussion/Beats/Laptop, Jason Bellchamber on Stand Up Bass & Mark Helsten on Guitar and Effects." http://music.cbc.ca/artists/Los-Hechiceros
Florentine Cruise - Patrick Gregory aka Pat the Bunny is behind this project. After taking a long break he's decided to bring it back to life with a live performance at HSST. Joining him on stage will be Jason Bellchamber and Timothy Glasgow. Dawn Redskye and Jeremy Hobbs - Dawn plays cello and Jeremy plays guitars and loops. When asked for an interview they insisted that it could only be done at the Beef Baron. Giraffe Skin Wallet - They said they just started something new and didn't tell me any details so who knows what these guys might do.聽 I'm sure there is a drum machine and some sort of modular synth setup involved. The Economy - Not much is known about The Economy

Music For No One Presents The Canadian Romantic and HSST Open Stage The Canadian Romantic is Robert Dayton Robert鈥檚 most recent project is his series of videos, performances , art book, and plush doll as the persona of The Canadian Romantic, a melodramatic figure of faded glamour who tries to bridge and explore the gap between Canada and romance with somewhat dubious results. You will come alive with laughter feeling like you鈥檝e woken up at an undisclosed time with make up smeared across your face. http://www.youtube.com/user/TheCanadianRomantic www.robertdayton.com http://www.etsy.com/people/RobertDayton http://julyfourthtoilet.bandcamp.com/ http://cannedhamm.bandcamp.com/ Hide and Seek Show and Tell Open Stage For Original Performance HSST Open stage is a place for artists to experiment with their live sets and meet others to share ideas with.
