This is a preview of my project measuring the Billboard Cast Album charts from the start of the year to today. So far I have recorded results up to February 1st.
The charts online show the top 15 every week, but this preview graph only shows the top 7. One might note the stability from the week of January 18th onwards, or that Hamilton, Wicked, and Hadestown continuously maintain positions in the top 3.
#oooooh#interesting!!#i should listen to more new shows...#but it's so hard to keep track of when new albums drop#and then I've gotta like follow the plot while I listen#(also I'm just not huge on the current sound of broadway but I'll never find the gems if I don't listen)

Okay, the Wicked movie is pretty good. It definitely feels like half a movie and I'm not a fan of Goldblum as the Wizard, but they somehow managed to stretch act 1 without actually changing much of anything.

HERE'S MY TAKE
If you take every version of Hadestown and pluck out the best bits and smash them together then it's possibly the best musical ever created. But if you're looking at any individual production, especially the Broadway run, then I do think Sweet Charity edges it out!!

#Hot take: the movie version of Fiddler is one of the greatest musicals of all time#But if we're going by the stage show it loses quite a bit of ground

Jinkx Monsoon and Corbin Bleu begin performances as Little Shop of Horrors' next Audrey and Seymour on April 2nd, replacing Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood.
#I feel like corbin bleu is always in the coolest productions#Like he's not gonna open a show but he'll be in the best revival of it

On the subject of movie musicals, I recently rewatched some clips of the Les Mis movie with the news of the rerelease. I think most of the performances range from decent to great. Russell Crowe's Javert is not good, but is not the worst thing in the movie.
Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean, however, is genuinely one of the worst performances I have ever heard in a movie musical. I don't think Tom Hooper did him any favors, but I genuinely do not think Hugh Jackman can sing the role at all. And I like most of Hugh Jackman's musical performances too! But I absolutely can not stand his Jean Valjean, it doesn't work for me.

As part of its 2024-2025 season, Roundabout Theatre Company has announced a Broadway revival of The Pirates of Penzance set to open April 2025 at the American Airlines Theatre, which will be renamed the Todd Haimes next season.
This new production will star Ramin Karimloo as the Pirate King and David Hyde Pierce as the Major General.
The setting has been moved to New Orleans with a newly adapted libretto by Rupert Holmes and new orchestrations by Joseph Joubert and Daryl Waters. Scott Ellis will direct and Warren Carlyle will choreograph.

Apparently back in the 90s Sondheim wanted to make an educational video game based on Into the Woods that would teach musical principles. Evidently it did not pan out.

Today's musical Christmas song is a very favorite of mine, coming as it does from beloved musical A Year With Frog and Toad. Enjoy "Merry Almost Christmas," even if it is ::counts on fingers:: about 18 days to Christmas and not two minutes.
