"Spanning the years 1937–2001, the collection should especially appeal to those with an avant-garde or musicological bent." Not everything in here is appealing to me but there are some wonderful compositions buried in this compilation. As noted in the article, there's some deficiencies in the overall selection given a lack of women and non-Western composers (additional links at the bottom of the article somewhat compensate for this lack) but it's still a sufficient overview of "avant-garde" electronic music. Direct link to the compilation here.

It’s not her real name, but she’s an elementary school teacher so good at balloon animals she part-times as an entertainer and hired somebody to make a commercial and intro music to hype the heck out of that target audience—I can’t even call it a “jingle” because that word means a light little bouncy tune, not this pounding masterpiece
Tumblr media
i just got this wrong number text and was like “that can’t possibly be a real name” and i googled it and was led to bobbi babalooney’s website which autoplays the single best and most ridiculous jingle i have ever heard and it drove me to actual tears please go listen to it and have your whole life changed by bobbi babalooney’s hype man

have you ever seen someone do a cover of one of these second beat songs? id love to hear someone singing some these as if theyre sensical lol
I haven't, but I did seriously consider doing one myself back when I went to online filk circles more regularly! like, I thought about raising my hand in a zoom meeting, trying to explain the concept, and then singing one of these songs...but I never ended up doing it. some of them are definitely singable tho!
like the actual secret here is that I make these songs for myself because I think it's fun, and when "Me Home, Tree Road" comes up on shuffle on my phone or ipod, you'd better believe that I'm singing along to it

Over time 90s music will get boiled down to just cheap nostalgia for boy bands. This is disgusting. How dare you erase the year where everyone was inexplicably super into Gregorian Chants

Everybody reblog with something by the band you think would be most excited to hear their music described as “like an angel pissing in your ear”

Macka B, 2025: “Wha Me Eat Wednesday: the Healthiest Sweets in the World (Very Many Berries)”
Turns out that guy that did the Cucumber song has a LOT more material. Some of it’s not even about fruits and vegetables

Previously I’ve shared Taco’s new wave synth covers of old jazz standards (“Putting on the Ritz”, “Tico Tico”) but I finally found the opposite:
Gary Lawrence and his Sizzling Syncopators, 1980: Dixieland jazz cover of the Bee Gee’s “Stayin’ Alive”

Yeah that’s what I’d expect music by David Lynch would sound like

David Lynch | Pinky's Dream | Crazy Clown Time (2011)
Did you know David Lynch released two studio albums of music? This is my favorite cut from Crazy Clown Time. Most of this album has vocals by Lynch, but this cut features Karen O of the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Supernova, 1995: “Math”
Part of a small movement of rock bands that felt like grunge was too serious and maybe sometimes musicians should be goofy doofuses
