Rocky Mountain Sunsets Chapter 1: The Siren Call of Cheesecake

Aiden didn't dislike the people in his ward. He actually felt neutral to positive about most of them! (Except Hailey. He resented that she was the absolute golden child, the kind of person his parents wanted him to be, but that's not really her fault.)

So, really, it wasn't anyone's fault he never stayed for linger longer. Well, you know, it was, but it wasn't due to anyone's malicious intent. He just really wasn't fond of getting called-

"Sister Walker!"

Yeah. That.

He turned around to see if someone had called him or one of his cousins, hopefully whoever it was wanted Daisy, not him, and nope, that is very much... Charles? Chris? Whatever his name was, waving him over.

"Join us, please! We've got an extra seat over here."

Extroverts, honestly. But it's not like he had a reason to refuse, so he walked over, scanning everyone sitting there. He knew none of these people. Wait, no, is that David? Fuck, that's David. Aaand the extra seat's next to him, lovely.

This was a bad idea, cheesecake is not worth this, not in a million years. David knew, he knew, and he was not about to risk his secret getting out. But it would be rude to back out now, so whoop-de-do, he's doing this.

He sat through introductions (the one who invited him over was Chris), cracked a joke about how he'd probably forget everyone's names by next week, and everyone kind of went back to whatever they were talking about before, something about some video game or other. He could probably join, but he had never played this game, and was honestly content to listen and shovel cheesecake in his mouth. Thankfully, David was keeping his mouth shut too, so maybe he had been overthinking this. Maybe it would be fine.

He had started thinking about throwing his plate away and leaving when he heard the first clap of thunder. Idaho in spring, he swears.

There's that post about the Mormon missionaries going around right now, and it's true, many of the missionaries who have been raised in the Mormon church have never thought any deeper than what they've been taught in Primary and Sunday School.

But I also want people to consider those of us who have questioned our belief in this church, have thought about all the ways it is wrong, and have decided it is the right one for us, even though it doesn't want us here.

writers of the world: please stop using epithets in your writing, trust me “the blonde army doctor”, “the curly haired detective”, “the blue-eyed man” etc. do not sound as good in writing as they may sound in your head

instead, use the characters’ names, they’re there for a reason and it’ll make your writing much more crisp, tight, to the point, and still entertaining

Sarah (aiden’s bestie, Alex’s lab partner) assumes the sudden awkwardness the two share is a crush and tries to set them up.

Striking a balance between "don't be afraid to end a story tragically if that would make sense" and "sad endings are not better than happy endings and a happy ending is sometimes what the story needs" is hard man
