After playing Shadow Generations I…kinda want Mephiles back in another Sonic game?

I never thought I’d say those words. I’ve been a Mephiles hater for years, not to mention that he was literally erased from existence at the end of his game. But…wow, literally all it took was a motive shift and some better writing and suddenly I get the hype.

Mephiles in 06 sucks because his actions make no sense and come off as extremely stupid because there are tons of easier solutions to his problems, especially when he can seemingly time travel at will. Everyone praises him for his role in Shadow’s campaign as the main antagonist, but to me, he just comes off as a lesser Black Doom. Like “oooh Shadow look at what these huuuuumans will do to you don’t you wanna be all eeeeeeevil with me?” We just did that last game!

Generations is a huge step up for Mephiles. He’s no longer concocting overly elaborate schemes, grossly misusing his powers, or plotting Sonic’s murder for no reason. Mephiles just wants to exist. It’s easy to interpret his line “I will defeat you and restore myself to the timeline!” as him wanting to kill Shadow and take his place once the Time Eater is defeated. That simplicity, that desperation, is what works for me.

I envision a Sonic game/story kinda like Advent Children where the whole thing builds up to Mephiles’ revival at the end. Maybe there’s a cult of Solaris that still vaguely remembers the ending of 06 (where Mephiles basically locks the world into a timeless void after fusing with Iblis) and tries to revive him. Maybe he only shows up at the end, maybe he appears as a voice and/or cloud of smoke until he gets his body back. Putting Mephiles in a noncorporeal state devoid of his powers for most of the story would also work to his benefit—now he really has to put that cunning mind of his to work and properly manipulate others to get what he wants.

Now that Ian’s given me a taste of this new Mephiles, desperate and angry, I want more. Bring him back and give him a proper storyline.
