Living off the Grid
Howarth, Dan. "Hawaiian House Harvests More Energy and Water than It Consumes." Dezeen. March 14, 2018. Accessed April 20, 2018. https://www.dezeen.com/2018/03/13/hawaiian-house-lifeedited-maui-harvests-more-energy-water-than-it-consumes/.
This story is a wonderful example of what can be done to live a life that’s modern but still have a minimal carbon footprint. This house has the capabilities to make its own electricity and gather enough water to maintain not only its self but the electric car that was paired with it. The overall design of this building blends in well with its surrounding. In addition, the new MEPs in this house the add-ons are more in line with the new philosophy they island is trying to embrace. Even the inside design of the house reflects this mind set with small and minimalistic furniture. Little details such as extra beds that tuck way into the wall and a outdoor projector for entertainment really set the house apart.

Julie Beckman was one of the chief architects that was involved with the Pentagon Memorial. She spent her time sharing with us about the project she was involved in and what they were trying to accomplish with this creation. It was not just about creating something to remind people about what happened on 9/11 but an opportunity to make a space where people can come to celebrate life. The space has been transformed for a place where a devastating act of terror took place, to somewhere that individuals can come and spend time reflecting on the events of the day in their own way. As in the video Julie showed us of her son running and playing on the seat. Children can come and play and have fun celebrating what is good in life. People that were older understand what happened can remember, reflect, and reminisce about loved ones. I think that this is what makes this site beautiful and wonderful is that there is no right or wrong way to view this space. It is all open to the visitor to partake in the site in whatever feels natural and right. There was a great deal of care and thought that went in to this project which I think is made clear when a person visits the site.

Shared Space
I love the concept that has been brought to life with this project. So many high rises separate people were the goal of this project was to bring people together. Through the incorporation of the bridges it allows the different departments to intermingle. This building speaks to me on a lot of different levels with the three bridges jammed into two large skyscrapers. In today’s world we are all about having our separate space so to see companies go that extra distance to bring people together is a nice change.

repurpose
Griffiths, Alyn. "Offices in a Converted Warehouse Centre around Suspended Concrete Stair." Dezeen. March 31, 2018. Accessed April 07, 2018. https://www.dezeen.com/2018/04/01/sjk-architects-interior-design-offices-warehouse-conversion-staircase-mumbai/.
I love what these architects did with this space taking something old that was possibly close to the end of its life cycle and repurposing it to give new life to the building. This has become a growing trend instead of tearing down or starting completely from scratch rather looking at something with good bones and finding a way for it to have purpose again. This is a great way to save space, materials, and time by using something that already exists and giving it a new sense of being. This takes a certain level of creativity and vison to be able to see something beautiful in what remains of something old.

Horizontal Skyscraper
"Herzog & De Meuron Reveals Plans for "horizontal Skyscrapers" in Moscow." Dezeen. March 22, 2018. Accessed March 24, 2018. https://www.dezeen.com/2018/03/21/herzog-de-meuron-reveals-plans-for-horizontal-skyscrapers-in-moscow/.
I found this article interesting especially after our recent speaker spoke about spoke about the highway system. It was not necessarily the points about the highway as much as layouts and space being used in cities in general. These new skyscrapers are going to be on stilts so not to impede on the view. This is part of a renovation of a local brewery that has been around since the late 1800’s. This is one of many similar projects around the world we are seeing this kind of work done more and more. I really like the idea of these kind of projects taking something old renovating and repurposing it so that it does not have to been torn down. The addition of the sky villas incorporates new modern design with the rejuvenation of the old. There are also plans of building a park underneath the villas adding green space which is desperately needed in cities. While I do love the idea of this kind of work I think that there’s an abundance of space that is being wasted underneath and with property values in cities usually being at a premium price I think that there are better designs out there.

Living Lighthouse of Inspiration
"Living Light House." UTK College of Architecture Design. Accessed March 05, 2018. https://archdesign.utk.edu/projects/living-light-house/
Mr. Rose came and gave us an account of his work on the Living Lighthouse the project the University submitted for the Solar Decathlon. This project has some special meaning to me because at the time the project was being displayed my wife whom I was dating at the time were in D.C. We happened to come across the decathlon where we viewed the house. I was already on the fence about what school to attend for architecture. Though I have since changed programs the house was a great representation for what the university could put out and helped me decide to choose UTK. One the things that really stood out to me at the time was how I felt when walking through the house. I remember thinking how it had such a modern yet very real futuristic feel. As Mr. Rose stated many of the things in the house are common in houses today at the time these things were ahead of their time. LED lights where just making their way on the market it was so cool to see how they incorporated them in the house. The double panned glass which helped with the energy has also started being used in the industry. Architecture is supposed to speak to us all in its own way. Walking through the house I felt as if I was getting a glimpse into what houses would look like soon. With everyone moving to reduce our carbon foot print and try to go green many of the aspects of this house are part of that movement.

Green Legos
Morris, Ali. "Lego to launch sustainable bricks made from sugar cane." Dezeen. March 02, 2018. As a child and even now as an adult I love Legos. I think for anyone interested in building, design, or architecture these toys are extremely fun. Lego is now making a unconventional but not surprising move. Like many other modern companies Lego is trying to embrace the green movement and make ecofriendly and sustainable Lego bricks. Lego has come a long way from the 80’s and even had a time when they thought they might have to file bankruptcy even as recently as the early 2000’s close their doors. Now Lego is a toy judger naught and making the decision to start making green Legos that are made out of sugar cane. As someone who continues to purchase Legos and plans to purchase them for my children I think this is wonderful. Trying to find a new ecco friendly way of making these toys are great because so many of them are made every year and with traditional plastic being so bad for the environment finding a new way to manufacture help ensure that future generations can safely still enjoy the toys.

Wooden Towers
Ravenscroft, Tom. "World's tallest timber tower proposed for Tokyo." Dezeen. February 19, 2018. Accessed February 28, 2018. https://www.dezeen.com/2018/02/19/sumitomo-forestry-w350-worlds-tallest-wooden-skyscraper-conceptual-architecture-tokyo-japan/.
This is a concept that is gaining momentum that I really like. Architects are starting to explore making skyscrapers out of wood timbers. We are starting to see these designs popping up around the world. Tokyo is currently working on what would be the world’s tallest timber tower. One of the aspects that I really enjoy about the designs is how they are all incorporating lots of greenery. Some are starting to use plants that will drape downward as they grown. This will give the building a lush tropical look. In today’s commercial construction industry steel and concrete are the norm but with the green movement gaining momentum we are starting to see more construction with this type of look. This is a fantastic way to start bringing life to the cold extravagant towers we are used to.

Reindeer Pavilion
Cycle 1
Green grass, rough ground, uncut grass, rocks greys, brown, rustic, expansive, burning embers massive landscape.
Cycle 2
The funny O in the company name/ red/ brown/green/ funny animal/low clouds/ people in and out / wood crackling/wooden grassy plains/cool fire place
Cycle 3
Mountains/trains/people/animals/landscape/architectures/natural layout/rocks earth tones/warmth/darkness and cold openness
Cycle 4
Clean/minimal disturbance/comfort and efficient in the middle of no where/peaceful and tranquil/protection acceptance beauty
Cycle 5
Mountains/distant houses/little wildlife/vastness/space seating/orange fire = warmth /peaceful and never ending
Cycle 6
Never ending sky/simple sigh/ hairy singular animal/simple building/single lonely place
One of the main things that I took away from the video is the stark contradiction between the inside and out. The outside gives you a vast openness that has a pure and clean visual image. Whether you are inside looking through the glass or on the outside you can see for miles with an uninterrupted view. A beautiful valley leads to snow covered mountains in the distance. Once you step inside you feel the warmth of the fire and see the light it provides. They have used warm woods and earth tones to build the Reindeer pavilion. The curves and the colors of the building show that they went to great lengths to make sure the building blends in with the natural environment. On the inside it is cozy and small which is the complete opposite to being outside. The fire place provides the warm for the small space and allows you to look through the window to the outside experiencing the beauty of the outside from the comfort of the inside.

Doors
The thought presented by Zumthor that stick out to me is about the doors/handles. For him the handles and doors were memories that trigger artistic creation. For the is an example of poor architecture that the memory triggers for me.
When I was a small child I went to the house for a snack. When leaving I did as I always did and ran out and hit the glass door with my hand to knock it open. This time however the outcome was different my hand bust through the glass and shatter. I was only four so as a child I panicked and freaked out. Funny thing is my father replaced the window and years later my sister did the same thing …twice. This memory for me was an example of a poor design and it was not till the third time that my dad wised up and put plexiglass in the door. Zumthor experience is what help to drive his motivation for his creativity. I took my experience as a chance to learn from it for the future when building taking that knowledge and us it to look for chances to make thing safer.

Zirma

"Ascending and Descending." Wikipedia. January 26, 2018. Accessed February 05, 2018. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascending_and_Descending.
The reason I chose Zirma is actually a funny one it is as simple as years ago there was a cheap wine cooler called Zima and this reminded me of that. Interesting enough the city choice kind of mirrors the wine cooler a quirky drink which is exactly how I would describe Zirma. Another reason is there is a following of people who have created art work for this short story. Both images that were selected caught my attention as something different. The first image tries to capture all that is in the story from the blind black men to the flying dirigible. It sounds almost as if Marco was on some sort of drug at this encounter because things begin to repeat and it is just a figment of his imagination. Like many of the stories he is telling the Kahn everything seems embellished and over exaggerated. The second one when looking at it has a feel of Ascending and Descending by M.C. Escher. Both artist do a good job at trying to capture and present an image of the town that Marco is attempting to describe.

Blog post 3 Description to the Khan
Axisnty. "Dorothea." Invisible Axis. April 02, 2015. Accessed February 02, 2018. https://invisibleaxis.wordpress.com/2015/04/01/dorothea/.
Marco Polo is one of my favorite stories, he loves to give lavish descriptions of the places he has been and marvels he’s seen to the Kahn. This is one of the main reasons that the Khan keeps Marco around is he enjoys hearing the tails he tells.
This picture is a good representation of the descriptions Marco gives to the Khan when he is speaking about Dorothea. Aluminum towers rise from the walls giving way to an image of a powerful city. He tells the Khan the city has 7 draw bridges, and quarters with hundreds of houses contained to each one. This gives way to a vision of what could be considered a very large and powerful city at this time. These images would no doubt be very impressive to the Khan a man that has dreams of grand cities and controls some large amounts of people himself. Because even though the Khan commands many people the cities that he is being told of are exotic and lavish. Dorothea is just one example but every single memory that Marco describes to the Khan are all most likely embellished to make them sound more exciting a exotic.

Blog 2: Images and Words

My personal picture
The purple glow from the Ferris wheel shimmers off the sway of the night waves. In the background, the city lights bounce off the night sky reflecting the life of the town. Walking down the pier in the night of the crisp beach air refreshing my soul.

Mairs, Jessica. "Outrage over Apple store in Melbourne's publicly owned Federation Square." Dezeen. January 04, 2018. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.dezeen.com/2018/01/04/apple-store-melbourne-public-federation-square-australia-outrage-petition/.
Looking at this photo I can observe that there are many people who are extremely unhappy with the Apple building. For me looking past all the people, I love the design of this building. It’s very simple with a abundance of glass which I think is meant to help the building blend in with its surroundings. I really like what they are trying to do with this building. I do however understand that much of the people’s complaint is with the structure being invasive in a public place. I will say that for what it is I think they did a good job of trying to make it blend with it surroundings.

Once again this is another example of an Apple store this is on Fifth Avenue. This one compared to the store in Melbourne once again has a large amount glass on the exterior. But even though it has a modern design I feel that it sticks out from its surroundings. Because the design feels so over the top for this area I think that it was a bad choice to place this building in this area
