Running.
She always seemed to be running nowadays. Ever since she’d gotten caught that one time at whatever office building she’d been tagging, Mia more often than not found herself almost getting caught by the police. She didn’t want to get arrested again, her brother was still giving her hell about the last time she had called him in the middle of the night. She didn’t want to take the chance that her parents were going to find out about the last time she’d been picked up.
Jumping up Mia grabbed hold of the top of a dividing wall, pulling herself up and dropping down on the other side. That would give her just a few minutes of a head start so she didn’t waste anytime before quickly making her way down the alley. Not looking where she was going she turned the corner running smack into another body sending both of them to the ground with a shriek. Scrambling to her feet she helped the other person up as well. “I’m sorry! Are you-” She exclaimed pausing when she saw who was standing in front of her. “Aeri? Are you alright? I didn’t hurt you right?” She babbled as she checked herself over to make sure she hadn’t dropped anything. Hearing footsteps she grabbed the other girl by her arms tugging her into the alley and pressing a finger to her lips.
“Ok, I think they’re gone now.” She said after a moment stepping back and brushing off her jeans again. “Sorry about that I didn’t want to get you tangled up in that mess.” She explained though it really wasn’t explaining anything.

“oh! that’s awful!” Aeri exclaimed in delicate syllables, her tone one of genuine concern. It seemed like underappreciated work, to color the sidewalks in pleasant hues and images only to be regularly stepped on and ignored. Aeri understood the feeling of being underappreciated – her own parents were far better at telling her how to improve than they were at celebrating her milestones. “i really should have been paying more attention,” she noted woefully, brushing back her bangs in the habitual way that she did when she was feeling particularly unhappy with herself. “your doodle is so cute though!” the dark-haired girl chirped in hopes of lightening up the mood, just as earnest in her enthusiasm as she was in her apologies. “i could never do anything like it.”
Aeri turned from the doodle to Mia, a smile spreading sweetly across her face as the other girl finally put a name to her face. “mia,” Aeri repeated warmly. “i’m aeri. nice to meet you.” She laughed, her smile really reaching her eyes. “i suppose we both did, but that’s alright! are you going to keep drawing? do you mind if i stick around?” It was rare for Aeri to be so genuinely interested in someone’s company, so she couldn’t bring herself to cut the interaction short as she might have otherwise – and she could think of no better way to ignore the negativity amassing in her mind like storm clouds than to spend some time around art.
Mia waved off the other girls apologies, flashing her a bright smile as she dusted off her jeans again. “Don’t worry about it really, it doesn’t bother me.” She said in hopes of making the other girl feel more comfortable because it was obvious that she truly felt bad about what had happened. “And thank you, kids always seem to like him so I draw him a lot.” She said gesturing to the little cartoon. “Aeri, that’s a beautiful name,” she said with a grin as Aeri seemed to genuinely smile for the first time since they had started talking. Nodding as she asked if she could stick around Mia stepped back crouching down again grabbing another piece of chalk. “Yeah! Of course, I’m just killing some time this afternoon, what brings you to the park? Blowing off steam?” She asked conversationally as she started a second drawing, the white chalk in her hands making bright marks against the dark cement.

& * | JULIA SMILED AS the other explained that the paintbrush was more of a permanent fixture in her wardrobe than a simple accessory, unable to hold back her soft giggle in response. As the other girl continued, Julia couldn’t help but let out a soft feigned groan of annoyance. “Tell me about it!” the blonde laughed, smoothing out her dress. “My legs are freezing right now ‘cause I thought it would be as warm as it was yesterday!”
“I’ve completely stopped relying on the weather report when i’m getting dressed in the morning.” She shrugged hooking her thumbs in the pockets of her jeans. “Must be a nice job though don’t you think? You can be wrong like ninty percent of the time and you don’t have to worry about getting into trouble.”

vinharvey
having lived in new york all his life, he was kind of expecting the individual he ran into to start yelling at him. being were very up in their own business in this city and vinnie was too in a way. which was why he was in this mess to begin with— not paying attention to the people around him and causing a mess. but he was thankful she was blowing her lid. he sighed with relief, now not having to brace himself for a rush of more apologies and having to defend himself from a possible attack in return. no, she was giving him a radiating smile, which was infectious, spreading across to his face.
“ i’m all good. “ he shook his head, letting out a full laugh. he looked over her figure just in case she was bleeding and decided not to mention it. obviously there were no broken bones, but he still didn’t want her injured to any degree. he was thankful when there was nothing obvious in sight. “ again, i’m real sorry, ma’am. i’ve been in a hurry all day. “ thankfully, he had this moment to stop him, even if just for a few minutes. he wasn’t racing against anything. he was now just standing right here, in this moment.
she didn’t look like she really needed anything else, though. vinnie was drumming his fingers against his thighs as he looked over her. still, it was real fucking weird how she was smiling about this. he was starting to wonder if she was hopped up on anything. “ you normally all bright and smiley after getting ambushed or is it just sort of a today thing ? “ he had to ask.
Mia laughed when he called her ma’am, not that she was laughing at him but she found it funny since she was positive he couldn’t be that much younger than her if he was younger at all. Brushing off her jeans again, an almost nervous habit considering the fact she was usually covered in chalk dust or paint. “I know how that feels, I’m usually always running late honestly.” Running late or running away.
“ you normally all bright and smiley after getting ambushed or is it just sort of a today thing ? “
Mia pursed her lips trying not to laugh again because she really didn’t want him to think that she was laughing at him. She had always been more on the bright and cheery side of the spectrum no matter what was actually feeling. Her defense against the world her brother had always called it. “Usually yeah, I don’t see the point in being gloomy honestly.” She said with a shrug, “plus its not like you were trying to knock me over right? It was an accident I’m not going to bite your head off.”

ofskylas
skyla was in her ELEMENT. some old-time funk was playing over the speakers of her family’s bakery, and she bopped her head along to the tune as she carefully rotated a platter of cupcakes, piping frosting from her bag to create swirls that formed incredibly realistic flowers on the treats. not even the ding from the door opening could break her focus, and she chirped out a lively “welcome to starshine bakery, i’ll be with you i just one second!” without so much as skipping a beat. it truly only took her a handful of seconds to wrap up her frosting job, and she carried the tray of cupcakes over to put the into the display case, giving a cheerful smile to the person at the counter. “hey there!” she exclaimed as she began to put the cupcakes on their designated tray. “what can i help you with on this beautiful day?”
As far as Mia Bautista was concerned, art could be found anywhere. You needed to just open your eyes and look. It was early in the day for most people, though Mia hadn’t been to bed just yet. She wasn’t all that tired though something about the bright day making it easier for her to stay awake. She was making her way home when a display in a bakery window caught her eye, making her stop, staring for a moment before deciding to go inside. “Take your time,” Mia said as she watched the only other occupant of the room ice the cupcakes. “That’s beautiful,” she said after the girl came over to her flashing her a bright smile. “each one is so perfect.”

vinharvey
to say the lease, today has not been a good day for vincent harvey. literally waking up on the wrong side of the bed, he fell of the moment his alarm went off, and that should have been the first sign. his side hurt from hitting some textbooks on his tumble down, but he’s made do (he’s been hurt a lot more in worse ways). then he burned his toast, and got a call from his mother needing help back at her house. all he had was evening classes, so vinnie thought it’d be okay. vinnie typically thinks it’ll be okay. boy was he wrong.
starting with the screaming children of a home-run daycare, the time there had been crazy, and he got held up an extra hour, which meant running to catch the bus, to catch the train, to get to campus in time for his class, or at least close to being on time. but as the final train door opened, and vinnie’s music was blasting through his ears with the heavy bass of kanye west (and who better to motivate you to get your ass moving than mister west), he bolted. running through the rushing crowd of new york city, and sliding between cracks where he saw it, rushing apologies when he bumped with a few people but never stopping. but when you’re going that fast, you’re bound to fuck up. which he did. his shoulder knocked into another body, sending a dull pain shocking through him. he stopped, turned to see the victim of his unintentional ambush, and they didn’t look much better. he glanced at his watch, and looked at them. “ i’m so fucking sorry, oh my god. “ he yanked his headphones out. collateral damage was not his intention, no matter how important calc was. “ are you okay ? “ he was looking over them to see if there was any visible marks— mostly blood. “ shit, i’m so sorry. “
The subway was always hit or miss with Mia. Sometimes she could get on ride a few stops and get off without any trouble, other times she ran into people she knew or got tied up in conversations with the people around her making new friends. Being the social person she was, conversation was never a turn off for her. Either way she usually ended up missing her stop and needing to get on a different train to head back to where she actually wanted to be. But sometimes she liked taking her time, purposely waiting for another train because someone was playing music on a platform, making art, giving a speech, on these days she didn’t like to rush.
To Mia the city lived and breathed in a way that made her feel alive, sometimes she couldn’t help but feel completely at home among all the crowds. Carefully and expertly weaving through the people to get to her various destinations. Though some days, like today for example, seamless movement within the subway just wasn’t in the cards.
Mia cried out as someone’s shoulder knocked into her, sending her lurching forward onto the platform of the subway station. Like always her first concerns were her cell phone, still in her pocket, and her bag which was surprisingly still seated securely on her shoulder. Getting back to her feet, dusting off her already torn jeans she looked up to see if the person that had knocked into her was still there when she saw someone looking at her. “I’m okay!” She exclaimed after a moment with a bright smile. “No broken bones, and I swear my jeans looked like this before I hit the floor.” She added obviously teasing him, “How about you? Everything in working order?”

& * | JULIA COULDN’T HELP but give the girl a grateful smile, already straightening up and smoothing out her dress. She offered a quiet laugh, a smile spreading across her pink lips at the other’s words. “Yeah, that’s so true! The weather is actually really nice today, too. It’s a good change from all that rain ‘n stuff, y’know?” Julia’s bubbly chirp overtook her initial embarrassment at barreling the other over, straightening back up to her full height with a small smile. “I’m good! Promise.” The blonde-haired ballerina chirped, her tone warm and friendly. Her blue eyes wandered for a moment, noting the paintbrush tucked into her ponytail. “That’s cute!” Julia chirped. “It’s a super cute and unique accessory.”
Mia smiled at the other girl as she smoothed out her dress. As she stood up Mia stepped back, twirling the paint brush in between her fingers with a laugh. “Like a permanent accessory honestly, I forget it's there half the time.” At least this one hadn't been full of wet paint, that was always fun to wash out of her hair. The other girls bubbly tone made Mia much more relaxed as another smile spread across her lips, tucking the paint brush into her bag. “You wouldn't of thought it was so cold yesterday right? Spring is always so unpredictable.” She said as she stepped out of the way of a man pushing a cart.
