He could see a blur of a hand in front of him, but hearing the kind voice threw him off a bit. He put his glasses back on and looked up to the stranger. “Pretty...” he said entirely too out loud and corrected himself. “Clumsy. I’m pretty clumsy! So th-thank you so much!” He gently took the books from the kind strangers hands, a little more than mesmerized. He snapped himself out of it. “Thank you...Mr...?” That seemed like a good a way as any to get a number.”I’m Freddie. Thank you for your help”
mxfreddie:
(( @jkeckert ))
Freddie was fairly new to town. Everyone seemed so friendly and kind and honestly he was not expecting it at all from anywhere in Alabama. Growing up in Seattle was a whole different vibe. But there was something so charming about a powder blue ford truck and being a local at a hometown bar that there was an entire channel just for that aesthetic. But even in such a beautiful place he still found himself in the classroom or the library as usual. He’d get out and explore eventually but he still loved the smell of old books and pencil to paper. So of course he was rushing through the library with entirely too many books in his hands and quite eager to learn. It was hard to find a place to sit when you had a stack of books blocking your vision. “Uh oh.” He could feel himself tripping over something. A shoe lace? A chair? Nope, it was himself. Of course it was himself. A loud thundering crash could be heard as he fell, books tumbling beneath him, and his glasses nearly flying off of his face. “Ow ow…” he winced, both from the pain of a textbook jabbing his ribs and the awkwardness of making such a loud noise. “Crap…oh my god.” He was blind as a bat without those damn glasses and he was reaching around desperately for them. Great first impression…
Staying at home wasn’t being very productive. Since returning to the city it had been a mix of emotions, but it was still adapting to reality, mainly because he was living alone after so many years living with his wife. Staying at home was becoming a little tedious, so he decided to go to the library. The library was his refuge in the city, he liked to sit there and read his books quietly in his corner, without any major problems. He was there reading when he saw a man approaching and losing his balance, before he could say anything he saw the man fall with his books and his glasses stopping at Jack’s foot. He then took the glasses and approached the boy, handing him over. “I think you’re looking for this.” He handed the man over and crouched down to help him pick up the books. “Let me help you”.

“Woo...yikes. Well, guess I’ll just have to get used to it. Might take a while though.” He laughed, shoving his hands in his pockets. “Ah, only a few weeks. But I already love it here! It’s great. I’ve met so many nice people! Oh, I’m Freddie by the way.”
“Well, jeez, I know it’s Alabama but is it always thing dang hot??” (( @frostfordstart ))

“Well that wasn’t very kind...I was just making conversation.” Freddie replies, confused as to where this anger was coming from. “Trying to meet new people around town and typically weather is something we can all kinda relate on but you know what? If you don’t want to be friends, that’s okay too! No biggie.”

“Nope. Whenever I go visit my cousins in LA, they’re always just spraying that Mario Bedesceau stuff on their face. But mix that with a fan and you’ve got somethin’ special.” He laughed softly. “I’ve only been here a little over two weeks. I’m from Seattle so the only time I really feel the heat is quick trips along the coast. This place is...amazing though. It’s so pretty and most everyone is so kind and sweet. In the city it’s so hit or miss, yah know?”
mxfreddie:
“Those are a thing? Oh I’m totally gonna get one now! Where can I get it from?”
“You’ve never heard of ‘em? Used to take them to games all the time, easy way to cool off. River and Peak should have ‘em, maybe the drugstore if you’re lucky. Heat takes some gettin’ used to, first summer’s always the worst. How long you been in town?”

“Yeah, it’s just about as hot out there as it is here.” He laughed softly, scratching the back of his neck and looking down to his beer. He has had entirely too many weather conversations lately. “M-Me? You like my...hah...well um, yeah. Yeah okay. I’ll swing by.” He nodded quickly, smiling towards her. “It...yeah. Yeah it is. You’re just like...You’re very beautiful and you seem so sweet. It would be...nice to hang out with you. M-Maybe even on a date...? I-If you want to! If you...yeah.” He stumbled through it but he got there eventually.
mxfreddie:
“Oh cool, I’ve uh I’ve got some family down in LA.” He nodded quickly and told himself to shut the fuck up and listen in his head. His brain was running a mile a minute while he did.”Stella Blue, huh? My mom and dad used to dance to that song in the living room all the time. It was always so romantic even when I didn’t know what the song meant since I was yah know…little. But it’s a beautiful song.”He was looking into her eyes just a little to long when he thought about the sweet memory but soon snapped back to earth and looked down to his beer and back to her. “Hair dresser! Cool! Maybe I’ll have to come by for a cut sometimes. My hair can get a little…unruly.”
“Oooh, really! LA is like… the coolest. I was on a soap opera for a bit… that’s why I moved there! It’s so warm and everyone is super trendy and chic. But I’m a Frostford girl at heart, so movin’ back felt right.” She could ramble on for hours. “Awww, now isn’t that just the sweetest? I love that! They named my brother after another Dead song… it’s a whole family affair for the Mavis’!” He was looking at her all moony-eyed, and Stella could only bask in the attention, eyes softening into a bright smile. “You got beautiful curls, but I can refine ‘em a little bit.” She chuckled, taking a sip of her margarita. “Is that you sayin’ you want another excuse to see me?”

“Uh, duh, do you like live under a rock or something?”
“Kinda, yeah. I’m usually so focused on teacher stuff I tend to just kinda stay in my field. I’m not quite sure being rude about it was necessary.”

“I mean, I’ve seen it in the 100s before. Late summer can get pretty rough. It’ll take some adjusting but you get used to it. When I first moved down here from Seattle I thought I was gonna die.”
“Woah woah! Wait!! You’re from Seattle?! I’m from Seattle! Oh my god! I’m Freddie by the way. It’s nice to meet a fellow Seattleite. What brought you here?”

“Seattle? Beautiful city. What’s brought you here? Certainly not the heat, I’m guessing.”
“A job! I was teaching at UW but I dunno college aged wasn’t for me. I wanted to teach high school because like...I just really want to show them how frickin’ cool science is! It’s a critical age, yah know? And a friend of mine from undergrad was working here and thought I’d be a good fit.”

“Yup,” Arlene smiled, shielding her eyes from the scorching sun. “Word to the wise – invest in a handheld fan. And a big fan. And a really good AC. And a walk-in freezer. And a cabin in some snowy mountains with a jet on retainer to take you there.”
“A walk in freezer? You folks really don’t play around out here, huh? Well, if it gets too bad maybe I’ll just go visit my parents back home.”

“Do you have like...central air? I’ve been here that’s really the move around here instead of AC.”

He looked nervous, and it was kind of adorable. Stella knew she has a certain… je ne sais quoi about her, and people reacted in various ways to her flirtation, and general existence. But this guy a was a little bit different, and Stella paid attention. “I’ve been here my whole life, ‘cept for the four years I live in Los Angeles, so when someone new rolls in, it peaks my interest.” She grinned, practically purring. “Why, it’s lovely to meet you, Freddie! My name is Stella Blue Mavis. Named Stella Blue after the Grateful Dead song. My parents were DeadHeads and went a lil’ bit crazy. But it’s a good song! And aw! I went to that same high school. I’m a hairdresser!”
“Oh cool, I’ve uh I’ve got some family down in LA.” He nodded quickly and told himself to shut the fuck up and listen in his head. “This really isn’t that hot yet,” Maisie remarked with a soft laugh as she put the plate down in front of him. “This is really quite pleasant, give it another month and then you will start to feel hot.”
“Oof...It’s really gonna heat up even more? I’ve been trying not to believe everyone about these crazy weather patterns but I think deep down I know I should’ve packed better.” He laughed softly as he looked down to his food.”Thank you so much. You get hungry doing lesson plans all day.”
