VN WAR ep.10 (last ep) “The Weight of Memory”

So, the final episode is here. This episode will end the Vietnam War documentary, “THE WEIGHT OF MEMORY.” During the first part of the film, president Nixon invited all of the soldiers were a hostage have been arrested before and their families to Washington for a party. The party is about all of those people who are the soldiers were a hostage have been arrested before returning to America. During the party, it is not what Nixon think because some of the soldiers think that it is not a great thing to do while there are other soldiers had to sacrifice during the war. They think that they shouldn’t open the party because there are not things to cheer about the war. After the party event, the Watergate scandal which is some of the US information had been leaked out by 5 thieves. whoever, all of them are working for Noxin. Also because the information of all of the thieves is working for Nixon, he became weaker and scared of the citizen. Nixon decides to resign from his president position. Gerald Ford, the next president of the USA and he cut off all the deals that Nixon made with Thieu. After that, all of the American in Vietnam started to return to the US. 

During the time the US people in VN started to return to the USA, the North VN moved to South VN and conquered their bases. The took the opportunity of the American moved back to their country, the Viet Cong look at it as a chance to dominate South VN while the South got left is defenseless and incautious. 

As a result, I think is very good when Gerald Ford became the president and him able to stop the war. The move of president Gerald Ford help both sides got the benefit by stopping the war and pull all of the American units back to the USA. the chose made the world able to live in peace again. During that time, the Noth is likely taking over the South even there are little of mess been created by the North. 

We can note one thing is that whatever the US is trying to do to VN. VN always trying their best to fight back the US. Along with that, the war left a lot of bad thing in VN like bad deadly chemicals and dead bodies.

The Vietnam War Ep10: The Weight of Memory -Michael V G11

At last, we had come so far to the final episode of The Vietnam War. Episode ten: The Weight of Memory. So, let us start with Richard Nixon invited all the returned prisoners and their family to Washington. Nixon threw the party in the purpose of celebrating and he wanted to thank the prisoners who were still survived in the war and prisoners who died in vain and was forgotten. He wanted to remember all of the sacrifices that they have made. Next up is the Watergate scandal, 5 thieves went in and stole the documents then it was leaked out. The thieves were working for Nixon. For some reason, as the scandal getting leaked out more and more, Richard Nixon started to get weaker, and as a result he decided to resign from his president position.

 Later this event, Gerald Ford took the president position and cut of all the deals that Nixon made with Thieu. After that, all the United States soldiers moved back to their country from Vietnam. Later, the North Vietnamese came to some South Vietnam region and conquered their bases. Viet Cong used this condition of United States moved out of Vietnam as an advantage to dominate the South Vietnam while they were left defenseless and incautious.

Overall, this episode basically talks about the “Endgame” of the Vietnam War. After Gerald Ford became the president, it was pretty much it for United States. They are finally living in peace again. Thing is that I already knew at the start that they would get the same result with lesser problem if they had done it sooner. As for Vietnam, North dominated most of the South. Though, they finally got what they wanted, and South were in a bit devasted condition, but they’ll end soon. We can’t blame the North everything though since they just only need their rights and take back what's their enough then they’ll stop. I do think that they only looking for peace and take back their lands. When Nixon was still a president, he should’ve retreated and pull all the American units out of Vietnam. Throughout the movie, we can see that every time United States dropped a bomb, North Vietnamese always rise up against them. In another words, it is pointless to attack Vietnam and because of these problems, so far way too many nuked cities, dead bodies, toxic chemicals were created. This war could’ve been stop sooner but United States held it way too long.

THE VIETNAM WAR EP TEN - BY KENNY HA

In the last episode, American after over 20 years of fighting the endless war, they now have their own view and opinion on it. One side supported it and still believe in a great victory. Other side was tired of it and started a riot to gain their voice. The war had separated family, friends and even whole America. On the other hand, in Vietnam, the American troops started to withdraw from Vietnam leaving South Vietnam fighting alone. South Vietnamese soldiers had their first mission without the direct help from American soldiers in Tchepone, Laos where they had to destroy the enemies’ food storage. But due to the weaker forces, South Vietnam failed miserably when half of the men were killed, wounded or captured. This concerned President Nixon. Seize the opportunity, Le Duan launched another offensive. But soon get countered by the B-52 of President Nixon. Again, Le Duan failed another offensive.  

At the end of March 1973, almost all the American soldiers were leaving Vietnam. Only 200 stayed back to guard the consulate and other American facilities. Also, over a thousand CIA and contractor were stay behind as well. Even though the peace agreement between the American and the North Vietnamese had been settled but the chaos still not end. The agreement had allowed over 100.000 North Vietnamese soldiers to stay back in South Vietnam. Soon enough, the Vietnamese found themselves in the biggest civil war in Vietnam history. Just two months after the cease-fire order took effect, the South and the North Vietnamese started to fight to gain as much land control as possible. The South Vietnamese under Nguyen Van Thieu command had the mission to take and hold every inch of South Vietnam. On the other hand, the North Vietnamese take control of Tay Ninh, near Cambodia borders. They build road and air missile to keep fighting the South. The fight over territory went on for months.  

On the other hand, in America, Nixon, and his advisors fall into many scandals when enemy list, cover-up, and military campaign eavesdropped and leaked out. This makes the Vice President resigned and made the people lost trust in President Nixon. On the other hand, Congress also requested to stop booming Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Every action that related to Vietnam had to go through Congress. Gradually, the American didn’t have any major action toward the Vietnam war. They abandon their ally, South Vietnam. By the summer of 1974, President Nixon was deposed for abuse the office. In August, he became the first President of the United State to resign. Soon after, Gerald Ford became the new President. Thieu lost hope in the war when the fund was promised by Nixon now get cut in half. This push South Vietnam into poverty. The military forces became weaker because the troops were being underpaid and every month about 20.000 soldiers had to deserted to be able to help their family. The time when by, the fuel and ammunition went low till the point that a South Vietnamese soldier only can fire 85 bullets a month. The South Vietnam forces were being weakened day by day.  

Saw the weakness of the South, Le Duan launch the biggest offensive. In December 1974, the North Vietnamese attacked Phuoc Long, in just three weeks, they overrun the whole province. But the American did nothing in response. Confidently, the North kept attacked Buon Me Thuot. In collapsed within two days. Then they kept attack Hue and Da Nang. It's also collapsed quickly. The citizen escaped out of the war zone by cars and airplane. But some was a mistake as enemies and get shot down. The offensive still not stopping. The North Vietnamese quickly overrun Nha Trang, Cam Ranh, Quang Ngai, and Quy Nhon. The North Vietnamese now quickly move to Sai Gon. President Ford order to evacuate all the American out of Sai Gon by boat, and a helicopter. Over 1.200 Americans citizens get out of Vietnam quickly, brought as much South Vietnam citizens as they can. On 7:53 a.m. April 30th the last American leaved Sai Gon. Pass noon, the North Vietnamese tank carry North Vietnamese flag smash through the gate of the Presidential Palace. Finally, the war had ended. The North Vietnamese establish a new government. They run in some problems throughout their recovery and the rest are history.

Throughout the whole series, the story was told through chronological order and be illustrated with real footage from the war. It helps the information flow smoothly and easy to understand to the watcher. Besides that, the information also gets analyzes under many perspectives through the story of the North, South and American soldiers. This gives the watcher a closer look through the war. Ken Burns had successful to connect all the puzzle and created the bigger picture that perfectly reflected over the war. Not only the story about the war was told but the consequence of it also get showed.  

Throughout the story, the war was postrace under the view of the soldiers and the citizens that had fought and lived through it. The story was told. Battle through battle. One side win, the other lost. But still the struggle had been there throughout over 20 years and the one who experiences it knows it best. The whole Vietnamese get to turn into the chess board played by the government. But the citizens and the soldiers are taking the pain and the bullet for them. Even though the war had ended for years, but the consequences are still around. The agent orange had made many Vietnamese deformities. The boom had destroyed thousands of building and the left behind still can be seen. Over 500.000 Vietnamese and over 58.000 American had died for the war. In the end, the war left us a question: “Is it all worth it?”

Finally, we have completed the film that Ken Burns and Lynn Novick created about war in Vietnam. This movie can be said that this is the best film about war that every person watching it brings deep impression to them. With rich words and impressive images, the film has exposed the difficulties that war has brought and given an extremely important meaning. The soldiers who participated in this war, they all had to live with moments whether good or bad, they had to bring it to the end of their lives. What we saw at the beginning of the film was that Richard Nixon held a formal party, inviting all war prisoners and their families to Washington. All American soldiers moved to the United States from Vietnam. Some US marines decided to stay only to help keep the country safe and secure. With the agent, the CIA and the diplomats stay behind. Because of this, the incident in Watergate happened and evil things and the things he had hidden were revealed. Therefore, it caused the Nixon administration to begin to weaken and eventually led to Nixon's resignation. But he was also the first to stand up and resign himself and read the speech for that. After the resignation was revealed worldwide, in Vietnam the government of Thieu denied all meetings and limited to meet anyone.

After Nixon's resignation, Gerald Ford was elected and became the next president after Nixon. North Vietnam used this as their advantage and began to plan and conquer another area of ​​South Vietnam. The people of Vietnam began savagely killing each other. Hundreds of North Vietnamese landed in the South, killing people who claimed to have betrayed the Vietnamese. Saigon now descended and became desolate and collapsed. Thousands of southern people seek to escape the country, they seek to escape to not be killed. Thousands of people fled. Because of the chaos the Americans must find ways to reconcile and seek to resolve for 40 years. And finally ended with in January 1973, representatives of the United States, North and South Vietnam and the Viet Cong signed a peace agreement in Paris, ending the direct involvement of the US military. in the Vietnam War. In my own opinion I think that Nixon's resignation is a liberation for all Vietnamese and Americans. Let a newcomer emerge and end this meaningless fight. In my opinion, if the US withdraws early, ending the war early, the war will be inexpensive and not many people will die. These are not only domestic but also foreign. Why don't we use words and sit together and talk, why do we have to use war to solve the problem? So that these losses cannot be solved, those who have sacrificed cannot live up, what has destroyed indiscriminately. I imagine that this war is useless and meaningless from the beginning and nature humans have caused too many disasters.

The VN war ep 10- Thomas

Welcome back to another episode of The Vietnam war, this is the last episode of the film, episode 10, where they were about to end the war. At first was about the Watergate scandal. Watergate scandal was about the politician that happened when the Nixon’s government used the power to against antiwar and oppose the democracy party. President Nixon had to resign to not on this scandal. The second things were about at Vietnam battlefield. Well, after the treaty in Paris, US army decided to treat all the troops out of Vietnam, and some of the troops would stay here for continue to supper for ARVN troops. Well in the time of the retreat from US army, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong army readied to push in to South Vietnam. In the meantime, many people who follow ARVN troop were running and try to escape from Viet Cong as possible when they were pushing very fast. Most of the people were trying to take on the boat and many people were drowning because they were missed went in the boat or the boats were sink. North Vietnamese were continuing to push and in April 30, 1975. They finally reach at No dome in Saigon and ready for the liberation of Saigon. In tern of that, they finally announced that South and North were all in one country. After the liberation of Saigon, some of the Vietnamese people wanted to immigrate to US, they wanted to believe and live on Political party. Some of South Vietnamese people were stayed and reeducated to become a communist. After 10 years of Vietnam War, US had built a Veteran wall for Vietnam War. It showed about 30 thousand soldiers had been diead in the war. This could leave to a suffer for many people who have their friend of family member died or any other case that people would still believe in this war.  After the war for a long time, US now had been trying to socialize and to become a relationship with Vietnam in the case about the society, economy, and the liberation negotiation. As for that they could create a beautifully negotiation for the peace in the future.

The Vietnam War Episode 10 (Tyler)

Episode 10 is the last episode of Vietnam War by Ken Burn. This episode is talking about end of Vietnam War and what is happened after War. This episode is start with what happen with Nixon. In 1972, he succeed second presidential election. Most of southern American, some of northern American, and western American supported him. At that moment, most of people in America expected he could succeed third election too. However, one of the biggest scandal in American history broke out. Watergate is the scandal that Nixon was involved in the so-called Watergate scandal in 1972 in which he set up wiretapping devices at Watergate hotel where the Democratic Party's election headquarters and tried to cover them up. at the first time, He denied the allegations, but evidence came out. on June 23, 1973, his incubation was made public in the Oval Office, which said, "Critically, Watergate intrusion is a national security issue, so don't let the FBI interfere in this matter!" Nixon tried to use his presidential powers to block the disclosure of the tapes in his office, but the Supreme Court unanimously agreed to the impeachment motion. Eventually, he resigns voluntarily before being impeached. After he resign, anti-Vietnam War group got bigger and after he stepped down as Watergate, the U.S. leadership brokered the armistice and North Vietnam attacked South Vietnam immediately. South Vietnam did not cover it. North Vietnam attacked basecamp and some big cities in South Vietnam. It took only a few days for them to fall. During that moment, lots of ‘boat people’ came out. They moved to America and some Europe countries to avoid North Vietnamese. They were afraid revenge and disadvantage from North Vietnam. It just took a month to finish war. South Vietnam was unified to form a unified Vietnam Socialist Republic. After war, thousands of American veterans got PTSD and still thousands of people got defoliant aftermath. American government tried to have good relation with Vietnam and sent support to rebuild country. There should be no war in mankind history anymore.

The Vietnam War Episode 10: The Weight of Memory -Kim G11

Finally, we have reached the end of the movie The Vietnam War, episode ten: The Weight of Memory, where everything had resolved. So, at the beginning of this episode the movie showed Richard Nixon threw a formal party, invited all the prisoners of war and their family to Washington. All of the American soldiers moved back to United States from Vietnam. Some of the U.S Marines decided to stay back just to help keeping the country safe and secured. Along with some CIA agents, diplomats, and contractors also were stayed behind. So, there’s this big scandal that were going on around in United States about the Watergate secret information getting leaked out which caused Nixon getting weaker with his plan. Therefore, he resigned his president position and made a speech about his resignation. He was the first one of all US presidents who did this. After President of Vietnam Thieu heard about this, he completely restricted himself from meeting anyone.

Then Gerald Ford was elected and become the next president after Nixon. There goes North Vietnamese using this as their advantages and started setting up plans and conquers another land of South Vietnam. As we know that there were no US soldiers in Vietnam anymore, which will be harder for them to get back in Vietnam and support the South.

Overall in this episode tell us that thanks to Richard Nixon resigned his position for a new president to stand up, United States had finally had nothing to do with Vietnam anymore which is a big relief. For me, I personally think that sometimes you just need to stay away from things not trying to help people all the time. Now Vietnam is dealing with themselves and there was no interfering of the United States. We can see that until now, if United States had ended the war sooner, there wouldn’t be protestors corruption along with racism back in America. While Nixon was still on as a president, he declared that the war is over and made a contract with President Thieu. But it’s actually that United States forfeit the fight because the North Vietnam can easily handle them off. But so far, we could see that there was nothing gain from all of these. Instead, there were casualties, destroyed lands, cities, chaos, nuked cities only left behind. I figured that this war is useless and meaningless at the beginning and human nature has caused way too many disasters.

We just finished watching the whole series of “The Vietnam War” by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. And to be honest, this movie has been very emotional and powerful, with graphics and unforgettable scenes from the war that will follow us to the very end of our life. Whoever had involved in the war, had to live with every horrible moment they encountered, whether it was bad, or good… The series wraps up with the US troops retreating from Vietnam but the country still remained hating on each other. The war had divided the 2 countries, killed trust between citizens and their leaders. While the Watergate scandal rivets Americans’ attention and forces President Nixon to resign, the Vietnamese continue to savage one another in a brutal civil war. When hundreds of thousands of North Vietnamese troops pour into the south, Saigon descends rapidly into chaos and collapses. For the next 40 years, Americans and Vietnamese from all sides search for healing and reconciliation. Finally, in January 1973, representatives of the United States, North and South Vietnam, and the Vietcong signed a peace agreement in Paris, ending the direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War. Its key provisions included a cease-fire throughout Vietnam, the withdrawal of U.S. forces, the release of prisoners of war, and the reunification of North and South Vietnam through peaceful means. The South Vietnamese government was to remain in place until new elections were held, and North Vietnamese forces in the South were not to advance further nor be reinforced. Two months after the signing of the Vietnam peace agreement, the last U.S. combat troops leave South Vietnam as Hanoi frees the remaining American prisoners of war held in North Vietnam. America’s direct eight-year intervention in the Vietnam War was at an end. At the end of 1974, South Vietnamese authorities reported that 80,000 of their soldiers and civilians had been killed in fighting during the year, making it the most costly of the Vietnam War. On April 30, 1975, the last few Americans still in South Vietnam were airlifted out of the country as Saigon fell to communist forces. Who won the war? I don’t know, all I know is that there were only victims of this tragedy. It is obvious that South Vietnamese people had the most disadvantaged position when thousands of people had to rehabilitate and risked their lives crossing the border to find freedom but they had to live in miserable. America was also, not the winner in this war. In military-wise, they retreated from Vietnam a few years before the war actually ended. However, they failed to protect their ally, South Vietnamese troops, that they bled themselves dry to take the people on their side. They were also the victims of nonsense promised by America. Not to mention many of them had sacrificed in Vietnam or even returned home with severe injuries that became the burden for the society. After this film, it has changed my view about this war a lot. I didn’t know that south people have to run away from their own country, own people just because they scare communist. After all war is useless and this war shouldn’t happen but this is history so we have to learn from the mistake.

The Vietnam War Episode 10 - Nguyen Hoang Minh

In the last episode of the Vietnam War, the main events are the Watergate event, North Vietnamese win the war and the time that Vietnam united North and South as one. The Watergate incident was about a political scandal for the United State government, 5 of Nixon’s men has stole data from the Pentagon and got caught. He have to resigned and got removed from the United State office. At that time in Vietnam, the North Vietnam dominated the South Vietnam, they started to take over parts of the South Vietnam area. One by one, South Vietnam fall apart. They have to retreat their troops from the highland to defend on the most important area, Saigon. Apparently, they failed to defend Saigon, the North Vietnamese unified Vietnam as one at Dinh Doc Lap. After the North Vietnam won the war, they created camps to re-education the South Vietnam soldiers. At that time, a lot of South Vietnamese suicide. Their corpse were all over Saigon. One of the most sorrow moment was a South Vietnam soldier stand in front of a statue of a South Vietnam soldier, pray for the people who died to defend Saigon, then suicide by a shot in his head. This episode, in my opinion, is the saddest episode of the Vietnam War documentary movie.

Johnny Vu

Episode 10 talked about the invasion of the North Vietnamese, the fall of Southern Vietnamese, and American army retreating out of the country. After watching this episode. So, the history of the war wouldn’t be so widely known and precise if it wasn’t for Ken Burns’ documentaries. I admire him for his work because I think he is the best one out of all to produce such a great series like this for us viewers to watch and learn new things. From the content of the movie, information, resources, to the arrangement of events. He’s done a great job at recreating a lively picture of the Vietnam War. Not only he did excellent in creating the documentaries, but he was also unbiased. Ken Burns included footages and interviews from both sides so the audience would have more understanding. That was what makes the movie so great and different. The series was filled with many surprises. I admire the act of many Northern Vietnamese people speaking up for themselves, and I feel like these people should be well-praised. The My Lai massacre was also a huge, shocking events that occurred. Started In Hue, it wiped out so many provinces, leaving the death of over 25,000 civilians. This is showing the bad side of person in the war.

 We can’t talk about a war without mentioning about the theme of “heroism”. As I remembered, there was a quote that said “Everyone is a hero in their own story”. However, this topic could be applied in many ways in the Vietnam War. Of course, the people who went to war and fought for their beliefs were considered heroes in general. But as the quote I have mentioned above, these people are just heroes in their own thinking. Different people have different beliefs because being heroic is to do what they want and what they think is needed. So, this topic of heroism sounds controversial and blind. It’s hard to find a true hero in the war because the human nature is what makes them fight in this war. For me, true heroes were the ones that got interviewed. These people really spoke up their mind and gave us their true political view after participating in the war, despite the fact that Vietnamese government is sensitive to this problem and they don’t encourage this act of speaking freely. These officers were brave enough to make criticisms.

In conclusion, the Vietnam War was one of the biggest events in the history. Looking back at all the things I saw in this series, I felt like people was the one that received the most damage. I know that I will never understand the feeling of fighting in the battlefield, and I can never imagine myself killing somebody, it is too much for me. But were the deaths of the people who sacrificed worth it for the victory, for Vietnam to earn independence? I don’t think so considering how America is still ahead of us and having some power to control us today. Vietnam might have won the battle, but America won the war

Welcome to another review blog about episode 9 of the film Vietnam War by Ken Burn. This episode title is “A Disrespectful Loyalty”. The film starts with unfriendly welcome from the anti-war protester from the soldier who fought in Vietnam.  It’s was a sad scene for the American because the way they used to treat the soldier who have fought bravely in the war.  Meanwhile in Vietnam, Vietcong and North soldiers still move to the south constantly. The White House still couldn’t take down the Ho Chi Minh trail so the supplies from the north still flow into south. So, they sent more than 17000 ARVN and supplies to invade Laos, the Americans also wanted to test how strong would the ARVN survived without the US. But the ARVN intelligent had estimated wrong number of the Vietcong and North soldiers in Laos. The campaign was failed and almost more than ARVN soldier died and wounded.

 In US, President Nixon knows that they can’t win this war and the ARVN cannot survive without the help from USA. Now he solve the problem by declare the campaign in Laos is success and the USA soldier could go home now. After that, Nixon withdrew more soldiers from Vietnam. During this time, the anti-war movement is getting stronger every day and spread around the world. The veteran also joins these protests and the protester surround the White house is massive. The veteran makes their point by throw all the metal that they got on the ground and call the metal trash. In this time, 7000 secret documents of Vietnam War were published and show the truth about the war. Meanwhile in Ha Noi, Le Duan prepared for new campaign with the scale that he has never attempted before. With the help of Sovet and China, the Vietcong and North soldiers attacked on three areas in Vietnam - the military base in the Central-north, the High Land, and the West of Saigon. But Nixon has order the B-52 fight back and the result is North Viet suffer big death. After that, Nixon announced that peace is in American hand. USA will withdraw all the troops in Viet Nam in exchange the North will release all the prisoner of war. Then then film shows the scene that all American prisoners come home in happiness end all American responsibility in Vietnam.

The VN war Ep 9- Thomas

In this episode of The Vietnam War, episode 9, we will look at some of the important things during this episode. At first was that, the protest was now getting stronger. They were now gathered at Washington and throwing the medal to the Capitol Hill for disrespected and dishonored for the soldiers at Vietnam war. This meant that the soldiers were being salted by the antiwar. They were being disrespectful and dishonored. I think this was the interesting solution for making this antiwar protest strong and the government could not stop this protest.

Secondly, let's talk about the battlefield at Vietnam. In the meantime, North Vietnamese army had already planned for the big battle starting from Laos, Cambodia, and from North Vietnam through the DMZ. In that case, South Vietnamese troop was fucked up when their American troop was not having their fighter troop. The ARVN troops must be carried for their fight with American troops, as for that they could lose the war after that big fight. In that moment, South Vietnam had the election day, the president Nguyen Van Thieu was ready for the reelected, but for most of the people, they face off with him and burn his picture. President Nixon tried to involve this election for faster, to make it safe and sound, but he realized it was failed, so for that he tried to let his troops got out of Vietnam.

About Nixon, well in fact that, he was still trying to continue the Vietnam War, but then there was many pressure about Vietnam War from the protest, and the struggling in South Vietnam, maybe it was the time he would be ready for ending the war, but before ending the war, he tried to take this advantage for revenge in North Vietnam by using b52 to bomb at a whole area in North Vietnam, leading many casualties of civilian. As for that, North Vietnam had revenged successfully by taking down 11 airplanes and arrested for about 45 solders. After that this, Nixon was ready for surrender and ready for negotiation in the treaty of Paris.

As conclude in this episode, well the war was almost over, and that the antiwar was still more powerful than ever in the last time. For this time, they added more salt to make it more intense and more power by throwing the medal for dishonor their army who had done in the Vietnam war. In that case, the South Vietnam president Nguyen Van Thieu was being failure in reelection, and for the ARVN, they also got a big lost due to the big battle from the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese army. In that moment, president Nixon tried to bring many b52 as he could for bombing the civilian house in North Vietnam and Hanoi which to destroy the houses, but then the Vietnamese troops had pay back by knock down 11 airplane which was captured more 45 war prisoners.

Vietnam WAR ep.9 - Jack

after the last episode, Nixon still thinks that he is taking over the VN. during that time in VN, a lot of Vietcong and North are moved to Cambodia to hide the war. besides the trail to Cambodia, there is also a trail started from Saigon and move to Laos. from that, Nixon sends more than 17000 ARVN and supplies to invade Laos to stop the trail to Laos. in this time, Nixon thinks that his plan is perfect because he thinks that the amount of Vietcong and North soldiers that moved to Laos is not that many. soNoxon think that to the ability of US soldiers service is very high. However, the war started in Laos and Nixon army have been dead, wounded, and arrest more than half of the army that Noxin send. on the other hand, Nixon that time is on his re-election which means that if the new of more than half of 17000 soldiers die under the control of Nixon will affect his re-election. by that, Nixon decides to tell the lies that the US had won the war no matter what is the result is.

During the time that Nixon is sat in the White House and prepare for his lies. in  Washington, demonstrations were everywhere. citizen was surrounding the White House and they want Nixon to stop sending any soldiers to the war. there are soldiers who are back to the US from the last war are also standing in front of the White House and throwing all the medals they have got for their contribution of the war into the White House. the action of those soldiers is not more different than a slap into Nixon's face. through the action of those soldiers who throw their medals into White House, I can tell that the government doesn’t do their promise in ending the VN WAR. during that time, with the help of the Soviet and China, the Vietcong and North soldiers are attacked three of the military base of the US, they attack the Central-north, the High Land, and the West of Saigon. however, when the Vietcong and North are nearly taking over the military bases. Nixon sends B-52 and used it to bomb the North soldiers to stop the attacked. 

through this episode, I hate the US government because they are killing their own citizen. as long with all the ideas of soldiers is wrong because they come back to the US. I think that all the dead soldiers are wrong to contributing the government that doesn’t even care about them. also, Nixon is a big lier when he said that he is a success in the fought in Laos.

Vietnam War - Ep 9  Nguyen Hoang Minh

During the ep.9, the documentary first show that the Vietcong soldiers and North soldiers are moved to Cambodia to stay out of casualties. however, Laos is not many different, the US military couldn’t stop the trail in Ho Chi Minh to Laos. the US decides to send more than 17000 ARVN and supplies to invade Laos to stop the trail. During the time before the US send soldiers to Laos, they already estimated the amount of the Vietcong in Laos and belief that they can reduce the number of soldiers wounded or die at least as possible. However, the estimated US military had killed more than half of the US soldiers are been killed, wounded, or been arrested By Vietcong. on the other hand, Nixon in the US is fear of his re-election. the reason is that he is the one who leads the fight is Laos and half of the army that he sends have been disappeared. Because Nixon scared that the outcome of the war will affect his re-election for president, Nixon decided that he going to tell the US citizen that they won the war no matter what. while Nixon spending his time to prepare for the lie, all the citizen are pulled out demonstrations were everywhere in Washington. All of those soldiers are used to be in the army now are standing in front of the fences and against the government. It is not the only things that shocked the US government, the moment that had shocked the government is that veterans started throwing all the medals they have received for their contribution of the war to the White House. compare to a hit on the back is not very different, but it also a punch for the government in general. I think it is true things because of the government that they used to believe in is now trying to kill more soldiers and won’t do their promise. talking about the plan that Nixon has failed, he declared to restore the relationship with China after long periods of time. The Vietcong and the North Vietnamese soldiers have attacked 3 military bases with the help of the Soviet and China, they attack the Central-north, the High Land, and the West of Saigon military bases. Until Nixon started the Linebacker to re-attach North Vietnam by using B-52 and used it to bomb the North soldiers. through this episode, I think that the US government it a stupid government because they think that the citizen will no realize their lies. they think that instead of doing something, they think that their words can make their citizen feel good. the citizen doesn’t care if the war is good or bad for their country, the only thing that they care is their families members who been forces to the war.

The Viet Nam War EP 9- By Kenny Ha

At the end of the last episode, the American still struggling to get themselves out of the war. But they had had many great strides toward the peace agreement with Vietnam. On the other hand, president Nixon still believes in a victory when things still get solved by violent. For the first time, President Nixon orders the Air Forces to boom the border of Cambodia to kill the North Vietnamese Soldiers. This triggered the anti-war movement again. Students who oppose the war, started to riot and burn their school down till the point that the police had to use firearms to control the crown. In the end, 4 students died and 16 more was wounded. But the chaos didn’t stop there when 25 American soldiers had killed over 600 people in My Lai province including man, woman, elder, children, and even infants. Nixon bogged down and fail into political scandals. One again Nixon broke America.  

Back in America, American started to divide into two sides. One support the war, and the other opposing it. After the My Lai massacre and the killing of 4 students, the anti-war movement has risen once again. People, especially student poured into the stress stopping car and breaking window to gain their voice. They are criticized American soldiers for killing thousands of Vietnamese and called them war criminal. But on the other hand, the worker class supported the war. They believe that the offensive of president Nixon in Cambodia was right. The victory will make America became the strongest nation and get them out of poverty. Otherwise, Nixon encourages the violence of the worker and find the ways to destroy the anti-war movement that he believed controlled by Ha Noi, Moscow and Beijing governments. However, the ideological opposition had tear American apart.  

On the other hand, in Vietnam, with the withdraw of the American soldiers, South Vietnamese now fighting alone with the weapon provided by the US. The war suddenly turns in to a disaster when the Vietnamese tried to kill Vietnamese. Although, the boom of the American had destroyed the trail in Cambodia. But the supply still coming through the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos. Over 17.000 South Vietnamese soldiers had been sent to Laos with the mission to destroy the enemy food storage in Tchepone. This time the Americans advisor only aerial support and not directly combat. The power of the South Vietnamese troops was being put to the test. But soon, they couldn’t stand the fire of the North Vietnamese. As a result, the South Vietnamese failed to destroy the food storage, half of the man was killed, wounded or captured. Nixon concern about the withdraw of the American troops. He scares that if the South Vietnamese didn’t have the support from the American they will lose the war. But he couldn’t do anything that harms his re-elected. So, he brought all the troop back home and call it a win. Now South Vietnam is on their own.

In America, the veterans from the Vietnam war get treated poorly and being seen as war criminals. At this point, the war had become meaningless for them. Angry soldiers and people gather around the White House. Protest against the war, but big fences get put out to stop the protester. In that year, a 7000-page document was published, exposed crimes of Nixon. But it soon gets cover up. On the other hand, Nixon visited China and hope to restore their relationship. This movement was made to stop the supply of China to the North Vietnamese. It helps South Vietnam had the advantage of having better weapons. Took the advantage when the enemy is weak, with the help of Soviet and China, Le Duan launch another offensive attack the west of Saigon. But with the help of Nixon, B-52 was dropped and wiped out many North Vietnamese. Once again, Le Duan offensive fails disastrously.  

After watching the episode, I felt like the way that soldiers were treated when they come home is wrong. They are soldiers serving for those people back home in America. They died for those who don’t respect them. They should be honored, not be censured. Because in the end, they are victims of the war when they had to suffer through pain, diseases and being forced to killed enemies for their country.  

On the other hand, the war also created the separation between human to human. It raises the violence. Citizens fight citizens. People killed each other to protect what they believe in. The government killed its own people to retain the order. War turns people into murderers in so many ways with so many different purposes. War is hell. It is pure evil.

The Vietnam War (episode 9) - by Wilson

Seem like after episode 8, the tension between the government and citizens kept increasing rapidly when the government didn’t want to admit their fault about the war. The US government supposed Ha Noi, Beijing and Moscow pull the string. Now, the tension increased between different groups of people in the same country. The soldiers that came back from Vietnam weren’t welcome, they were cursed by everyone instead.

Meanswhile in Vietnam, Vietcong and North soldiers moved to Campodia to stay out of casualties. But the White House still couldn’t take down the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos. So, they sent more than 17000 ARVN and supplies to invade Laos. But this time, the Americans wanted to test how strong would the ARVN survived without the US. But the US intelligent had estimated wrong number of the Vietcong and North soldiers in Laos. The campaign was failed. Half of ARVN soldiers went their were killed, wounded or arrested by the ennemies. In US, president Nixon feared that the ARVN wouldn’t survive if the US withdrew of the war and he didn’t want it affect his re-election. He said that they might declare the victory, no matter the outcome. So, he withdrew the US soldiers of Vietnam, and left everything for the South Vietnam.

In the US, the soldiers came back from Vietnam started to oppose the war. Demonstrations were everywhere in Washington. The veterans and people gathered aroung the White House but they use fences to stop the protesters. The veterans started throwing all the medals they have received for their contribution of the war to the White House. This was like a slap to the face of the US government. They couldn’t believe one day, the people who served for them, turned their back to the government. In this time, a 7000 pages document was published many truth about the war. That the ARVN and the South government were too weak and corruption while their enemies’ will never reduce even when the US tried to bombing them many times. Yet, the US government still lied to the Congress and America citizens. Nixon delared to restore the relationship with China after 2 decades of delaying. This was movement to replace the South Vietnam when the US withdrew the troops of Vietnam.

Meanswhile in Ha Noi, Le Duan prepared for new campaign with the scale that he has never attempted before. With the help of Sovet and China, the Vietcong and North soldiers attacked on three areas in Vietnam - the military base in the Central-north, the High Land, and the West of Saigon. And when the ARVN seemed to be failed, Nixon started the Linebacker to re-attack the North Vietnam by using B-52 to bombing the North soldiers. The ARVN was safe and the offensive of the North seemed to be failed again. But the amount of bombs that Nixon dropped was bigger than what Johnson did. Many people were afraid that the war Nixon tried to bring down, now it climed up again.

But it seemed that finally, the America troops could go home as their wish. The number of American troops went back to US increased everyday. After a very long time, many soldiers could see their family, their children, and things that they had never seen before they’re gone. But it also left many questions behind. How could the South Vietnam survive? What is the value of America promises and sacrisfices? And how long would it take to heal the wound was caused by the war?

Ep 9 - Tuan Nguyen

It can be said that Episode 9 is one of the most important episodes of the film, presenting extremely important political and military developments in both Vietnam and the United States during this nearly two-year period that led to the signing the Paris Agreement on January 27, 1973), The Battle of Lower Laos (Operation of Lam Son 719, March 2-3, 1971), 1972 Offensive (Easter Offensive), The anti-war movement among American veterans with John Kerry's hearing and the removal of US medals by the US veteran, Concessions of the United States in secret talks in Paris and the fact that President Thieu refused to sign the signed agreement between Kissinger and Le Duc Tho, The Pentagon Papers publication, and The bombing of Hanoi during Christmas 1972 led to the signing of the Paris Agreement.

The Lower Laos Battle was a large, corps-level, ARVN operation, with the goal of destroying some NVA bases and treasures on the HCM Trail with the focus of Tchepone town in Lower Laos. The operation was under the command of Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Lam, 1st Corps Commander, with the participation of several units of the best ARVN combat forces: Airborne Division, Marine Corps Division, and 1st Infantry Division. ARVN units, though having reached Tchepone and destroyed many of CSBV's treasures, were severely damaged. Episode 9 notes as follows: “Although individual ARVN units fought bravely the invasion was a failure.” “Almost half of the 17,000 South Vietnamese, who entered Laos, would be killed, wounded or captured.” When interviewed, it was Lieutenant Colonel Tran Ngoc Hue, Battalion Commander, 2/2 Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, who also spoke, and the film moved and recorded as follows: “My battalion finally was surrounded, I was wounded three times. Do you know how much my battalion survive? About 50 soldiers and men. And when we go there you know how much? About 600.” Both the GVN and the US government announced that the operation was a victory to prove that the Vietnam-South policy had been successful and that the United States could safely continue its withdrawal. President Nixon announced on television to the American people the following: “Consequently, tonight, I can report that Vietnamization has succeeded. Because of the increased strength of the South Vietnamese, because of the success of the Cambodian operation, because of the South Vietnamese operation in Laos, I am announcing an increase in the rate of American withdrawals.” Before the attack on the General Attack in 1972, on March 10, 1972, the 101st Division Although the last operational unit of the US military was withdrawn from Vietnam. So during this entire Offensive, in all three fronts, Quang Tri, Kontum, and An Loc, ARVN units fought alone; The United States only supports artillery fire. Episode 9 speaks very correctly about the importance of B-52 air raids at An Loc battlefield but does not mention much about the heroic combat and sacrifice of ARVN units at all fronts. during the duration of that General Offensive, especially in the Lam Son 72 Campaign, recapturing Quang Tri, was the bloodiest battle during the nearly 20 years of the Vietnam War; The Marine Division alone had more than 3,500 soldiers killed, and thousands were wounded.

Regarding Paris Peace, Episode 9 has faithfully presented the fact that Kissinger betrayed his Vietnamese ally in secret talks with Le Duc Tho in the following note: “At the secret talks in Paris, Kissinger had offered his North Vietnamese counterpart, Le Duc Tho, the most significant concessions that the United States had yet made: North Vietnam could keep its troops in the South—ten of thousands of them. And in exchange for the release of American prisoners of war, all American troops will be withdrawn within seven months… Thieu knew nothing about the new American concessions to Hanoi.”

Regarding The Pentagon Papers, Nixon tried to stop publishing but failed. He then ordered the Ministry of Justice to prosecute Daniel Ellsberg who had disclosed the material. At first, Nixon seemed reassured because in general, the documentary showed that the Democratic Party (Kennedy and Johnson) governments were heavily involved. But then Kissinger himself reminded him that if he did not stop everything, then his own secrets may be possible (like the campaign for Thieu not to send the delegation to the Paris Conference before the election). the president in 1968 or the case of his secret war expansion to Kampuchia) will also be exposed. He, therefore, established a group of secretive activists (which the American press gave the nickname The Plumbers) to illegally attempt to infiltrate some of the research institutions Ellsberg had worked on (like Rand.
