The Media
Week 20
It is frequently said that “the media” controls the information that you here and contorts it to the way that benefits them. And while in some aspects this may be true to use that as a complete blanket policy is narrow minded and limits your potential scope of information. Placing this taboo on information outlets is short sighted. In fact those people who say that the media is wrong and lies often gets this information from media outlets so they in turn are being controlled by the media, in a different way but the concept of bending to the media is still there. With that being said however in my personal experience, now keep in mind I don’t have much experience only 17 years walking the earth but, my experience is that with every piece of information can be manipulated and changed to benefit someone. Of course dictionaries and encyclopedias do not fall under that category but, in terms of research and articles written all of that information has to be taken with a grain of salt. When people write, they write with a bias because everyone writes with a bias. It is nearly impossible to avoid a bias when writing. That is because we are humans and by human nature we have opinions and those opinions often have a way of coming through in writing. But while humans have opinions we also have curiosity and wonder and when are told something we are inclined to wonder and question it. That is the scientific process and how many scientific inventions occurred was through questioning the status quo. People such as Sir Isaac Newton all the way up to Steve Jobs questioned things. That is the strategy that I employ when reading articles and forming opinions. A scientific process of sorts, read the article, ponder and question the facts and the writing and check it with another article before forming an opinion on the topic. But, just saying that the media alters the information and changes it just because it comes from the media is an ineffective strategy but also believing everything that is said from the media is also ineffective. As usual compromising and landing in the middle is the best course of action. The media consists of things such television, radio, magazines and the internet. Yet they are all grouped together in this opaque group that is just labeled “the media” . that is why it is important to know where the information is coming from and who is saying it. IT also a well known fact that some media outlets are notoriously biased in terms of political views for example Fox News is Right Wing while CNN is Left wing. And while these are big name media outlets try to stray away from them in terms of receiving information about politics and if you do fact check it with the other. Take everything with a grain of salt and question its meaning and accuracy before using it as a fact or forming an opinion on it.

The NBA
Week 19
The NBA is so soft it’s not even funny. Nowadays you touch someone and they fall to ground acting like a sniper just took them down from the rooftops. Back in the Larry Bird and Magic Johnson days when you went up for a lay up you would get smacked around. You had to earn those points when taking it to the paint and you had to finish hard or else you weren’t going to finish at all. Today I watched Isaiah Thomas get a technical foul for talking smack in the playoffs. Talking smack gets you a technical. For the Bad Boys of Detroit Bill Laimbeer used to flatten people with no repercussions. It is just ridiculous to think that people used to get away with that and now you breath the wrong way on Lebron James and he flops to the ground. Lebron is 6 foot 8 260 lbs and the best athlete on the planet you should not be going to the ground every other play he should be absolutely throwing down everything. It is just getting super ridiculous he should not be falling down at all. And what is happening in the NBA is happening all across sports the NFL, college lacrosse and in the NHL. Hockey fights used to last half an hour with benches clearing. Granted hockey is still the toughest sport out there but still it used to be tougher. The NFL is also getting ridiculous the players are only getting bigger stronger and faster and the rules make it harder and harder to play defense. The idea that players have the strength and accuracy to determine exactly where to hit a player is insane no one can make sure they hist someone in the safest place every time it’s impossible. As well as with the development of player’s not being able to hit up high they have to hit low which has the potential to end many players careers with career ending knee injuries. Sports in general have gotten softer in all ways. But, the NBA is the most ridiculous with the excessive with the fouls and they don’t let the players play and use their athleticism and aggression for their advantage. I obviously wasn’t alive for the old NBA but I have watched my fair share of documentaries and highlights and the level of basketball is so much higher as well as the rivalries. The players were tougher and played hard the full season. The playoffs were gut check time and the things that they used to say to each other were so ruthless but gave them such a competitive edge. The softness needs to stop, for the players and the viewers. The NBA and the players need to come together and correct the complete over officiating and let the professional athletes be professional athletes and let them play the game without all the touchy rules and let the best team win instead of calling fouls on minor things. Everyone would benefit from this.

Nukes Week 18
Nuclear Weapons such powerful tools of war that are so hotly contested and so fiercely hated and loved. At this point in the world to me nuclear weapons are completely useless. So many countries have weapons and if they don’t have weapons then one of their allies surely does. There are about 15,000. The majority of which are owned by the United States and Russia. If a nuclear war was to break out the fallout would be ridiculous. It’s like the scene in the office where they have finger guns pointed at each other and when they go to lower it they all snap back up because they don’t trust each other. (I’ll attach a gif to this article so you see what I mean). Nobody wins in a nuclear war because the destruction would be catastrophic and life on earth would cease to exist as we know it. So why do humans continue to have such terrible weapons well fear. Fear is one of the strongest things on earth. Fear and hope. Fear triggers the animal part of your brain and the fight or flight response and causes humans to do some crazy things. That is why countries such as the United States refuse to dismantle their nukes because the do not trust other countries to do the same. Especially countries such as Russia, who has a long standing vendetta going back to the Cold War and as two of the world’s strongest countries their actions have some very strong ripples out to the ends of the earth. So instead of ending a potential end of the world threatened we continue in this endless tango of mutual respect and fear. The only thing that keeps the music going is Mutually Assured destruction. The fact that neither country can take action against the other because they know that the other can inflict as much damage on them as they can. So the tango continues. If only the Manhattan project had never gotten off the ground then potentially nuclear power wouldn’t exist. But of course someone else down the road would have done it. Not to mention the effects on the environment such as the nuclear tests that were done in the ocean. Nobody knows the full effect that they had on the environment and we could still be paying for the tests and experiments that were performed during the greater World War 2 era. And nuclear meltdowns like the ones that happened in Japan and their effect on the environment and the greater world. Nuclear Power sure does create a lot of problems considering the benefits include mass destruction, death and the potential end of the world. That world has a lot of evils in it and it’s pretty silly that the most powerful weapon that humanity has up to date could end the world and yet we talk and act with such ease about them. I believe it's time to move past the nuclear phase and into an era in which dimplomacy not weapons lead the way.

Syria
Week 17
As I’m sure most of you know many bombs were dropped on Syria after chemical weapons were used on children and innocent civilians. President Trump launched an attack on Syrian airfields and Russia did not like that. I’m not going to pretend like I understand what is going on in Syria. I know it’s extremely complicated and to me it just seems as though there is just copious amounts of hate in that country and to attempt to mediate may be a futile attempt at piece. This blog will be about the United States involving ourselves into other countries issues. I am very torn on this subject, on one hand there are many people in the United States. 40 million people live in poverty, trillions of dollars in debt and about 5 percent of the people do not have jobs. Those people are the ones that need our help. Many veterans live in poverty or with copious medical bills because the VA is a whole bunch of Red Tape. Yet we involve ourselves in other countries business to say this isn’t right and try to institute American ideals in places where frankly they just aren’t wanted. The cultures are different and the American ways aren’t the best. It shouldn’t always be America’s job to police the world on what’s right and what’s wrong. Yet to watch children have seizures on the ground as they wrestle with the pain of the chemicals. Or you watch women and children be abused and children be used as pawns in a larger schemes. Only makes you want to take action. It’s human natures. Unless you're a sociopath then you fell empathy and sympathy for these people that were dealt such a bad hand in life. So we land in an awkward grey area straddling the line between logos and pathos. Logically we shouldn’t involve ourselves in other people’s matters because it is a financial burden, may create enemies and we have enough problems to deal with already without adding to the list. But then our emotions and sense of right and wrong comes in and we start to think about the right thing to do for humanity and for those people who by no fault of their own are paying the price just because of where they were born. This is one of the tough questions that I wrestle with and always ponder about what is the right move. Should we get involved with the issues or should we sit back and watch this crimes take place? I think that the USA should involve themselves only if they see a way to make a significant difference in the people’s lives. If by interfering that a real difference is made. But sometimes trying to change a culture and end years and years of hated is too tall of a task. So let’s work to make a difference is people’s lives overseas and in the USA it’s important that our people are taken care of before we jump out and help everyone else.

College Sports=$$$
Week 16
With the NCAA championship looming the hot topic of whether or not athletes should be paid has been recently debated. I say that athletes should be compensated in some form but not in terms in copious amounts of money. I unfortunately am not a Division 1 athlete and while I wish I could be I will never truly know what is it like to have thousands of people cheering for me. But, fortunately I do know plenty of Division 1 athletes. I know a lacrosse national champion and a basketball star who recently declared for the NBA draft. Talking with them about the commitment, they say that in season it is about a 40 hour a week commitment. 40 hours which is the standard for work weeks in the United States. Colleges make millions off of their athletes for example Alabama football reported 103 million dollars in revenue in 2016. 103,000,000 dollars. Now not every college sport is making that kind of money but it begs the question should athletes receive compensation for their efforts and the money the produce. I say yes, while these players receive scholarships and in some cases help getting into a highly academic school that they normally would not have gotten into. The argument can be made that, that is the worth their efforts, it is a fact that on average people who have college degrees make more than those who do not and to graduate without any student debt is an amazing thing that a small percentage of the population has the pleasure of enjoying. A free college education is worth a lot of money in today’s world. As well as if college athletes are guaranteed commission for their efforts it could make the recruiting process slanted and cloud the integrity of college athletics. Paying someone to play a sport takes away the plains for the love of the game aspect in some ways. You start playing for the pay check.
With that being said there is a well documented quote from Shabazz Napier: ‘there are hungry nights that I go to bed and I’m starving’. The former UConn guard led his team deep into march madness. Yet there are still nights that he goes hungry. I have heard this also from the people I know who play Division 1 sports. The NCAA has very strict rules surrounding what players can and cannot do. The NCAA does not have the athletes best interest at heart. A couple weeks ago some Richmond baseball players were suspended for playing fantasy baseball with an entry fee because it was considered gambling. If the NCAA and the schools are going to make millions of these players then they should not be going to bed hungry. Not to mention that athletes could get a job if they did not play sports to able to buy food and other commodities. So the solution to me at least is to provide athletes with a weekly allowance to help them get through college, buy food or however they want to spend their money.

Pot
Week 15
Marijuana the funny little green plant that is so loved and so hated. Marijuana has been debated so heavily over the past couple of years. Whether it should be legalized for recreational use. There are many arguments that could be made for both sides. First for the pro side, more revenue going to the state rather than drug cartels, it’s very similar to alcohol, and the studies of about marijuana and driving are inconclusive. It’s hard to argue against those first two. More money for the state and federal governments is a good thing considering the nation is trillions of dollars in debt. As well as if the growth and retail of marijuana can be better regulated and eliminate the risk of lacing the drugs with other dangerous substances. Marijuana is categorized with alcohol in today’s society very frequently and marijuana use is accepted in many households. It certainly has a better reputation than any other illegal drug. In most boarding schools alcohol and marijuana offensives reap similar repercussions. So then why shouldn’t adults have the option to use their drug of choice whether it be alcohol or marijuana. It may have different effects on the body but, they are grouped in the same category so why not. As for the driving those test are inconclusive for exactly how smoking and driving affects you. However there is no way that a person drives better when they are stoned compared to when they are sober. And here’s the difference between driving drunk and driving stoned, driving drunk is much more noticeable once pulled over. You can’t put eye drops in and a breath mint. The police will breathalyze you and if you have consumed alcohol you will get caught. Marijuana on the other hand is much more difficult. It is easier to conceal using tools such as eye drops and breath mints. It is much harder to determine if someone is high rather than whether they are drunk. With is being harder to get caught I believe that this will lead more people driving impaired which is a very dangerous thing to be doing and is one severe downside to legalization. Another is underage use. If Marijuana was to be legalized around the country then underage access to marijuana would grow exponentially and in different ways. In terms of that edibles and vaporizers will be easy to acquire making it easier to use marijuana in inconspicuous ways. And while marijuana might have similar effects on your brain when you are older than 25 when a person is under 25 then marijuana can be very detrimental to the health of teenagers.
However while there may be some downfalls to legalization I think that the positives most definitely outlay the negative. With the increase of revenue to the government and it’s similarities to alcohol I think that it only makes sense to legalize it. As well as regardless to what I think marijuana legalization is a runaway freight train that I do not believe can be contained.

Competitiveness
Week 14
Sports are the passion of millions and millions of people. It drives them, it’s the reason they get up in the morning and it’s what they look forward to on Friday night. Growing up in a sports driven household (my athletic career peaked in 5th Grade) sports have been and most likely will always be the center of my family dynamic. I grew up going skiing every weekend, playing golf and baseball all summer and watching football all day every Sunday. Many great lessons are learned on the sports field that can be taken elsewhere. And I know that you’re thinking another talk about sportsmanship and teamwork I’ve heard this a million times. I won’t lie to you those two things are some of the greatest things one person can ever learn but, that is not what this will be about. Competitiveness is what I’m talking about.
Being competitive is an unbelievably powerful weapon. That fire in your stomach that only be quenched by the taste of a win. I’m very competitive and love to win. Whether it be pickup basketball or spirit week in school winning is everything. Needless to say I don’t subscribe to the as long as you have fun you won philosophy. Because you know what’s fun? Winning. Winning is fun. Competitiveness transfers over into many facets of life as well. School and work are two things that instantly come to mind. If someone tells you that somebody else does something better than you, you should want to do it better than they do to become the best you can ever be. Seeing your friend get a higher grade on a test or paper should motivate you to come back and get better grade next time so that you can excel. When the greatest athletes are talked about, they are most often recognized for their extreme competitiveness. Kobe Bryant has been well known for his extreme competitiveness and will to win. Competitiveness leads to work ethic which is an intangible thing that leads to greatness. Those two things when combined are a lethal combination in life and in sports. Let your competitiveness out and let your work ethic work it will only benefit you in the long run.
Everyone can stand to be more competitive. Without competition the world would be complacent. In business without competition businesses would become complacent and start to provide sub par products and subpar customer service. But, for example Verizon can’t do that because all of their customers would just switch lines to AT&T because they will offer a better service. There are also economic policies that suggest that the best way to regulate the market is just to let competition rule the market. While there are many flaws with that system the ideas stays true. Let the best person win using their competitiveness to drive them. So I beg you next time you suppress that feeling in your stomach that says let your competitive side out. Don’t fight it. Let it out, it will lead to a strong work ethic and a better life.

Donald Trump
Week 13
Oh President Trump. I have attempted to avoid you since my locker room talk blog but, I think it’s time I touch on the topic that is all over every media outlet. Unfortunately I will be disappointing some of you. This will not be a complete roast session of President Trump but however taking a step back and looking at the whole situation. And before all of you start yelling that I’m a Trump supporter understand that I was never on that train and unless some radical things change I doubt I ever will be.
I love the fact that people are protesting and sticking up for what they believe. If you look at history that is how serious change occurred. Everything from the Civil Rights Movement to the muckrakers of the early 1900′s attempting to take down the monstrous trusts of J.P Morgan and Standard Oil. The protesting at the Women’s Marches across the country and at the pipeline in South Dakota. Is the type of change that is at the roots of American History and is a vital tool for change. Oscar Wilde said “disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue.” I agree with that extensively if people don’t question the norms then nothing will change. Trump’s actions and reactions have been the catalyst for all of these protests and for good measure. His policies have been radical to say the least. But, let’s not root for him to fail. My mother told me “You don’t root for the pilot to fail while driving the plane”. Now I know that analogy may not be exact and perhaps slightly far fetched but the idea is the same. Trump is leading this country unless he is impeached, let’s not hope that he leads this country into the ground.
I see copious amounts of hate for this man every day. People at school hate him so much that if you even utter the word Trump they are outraged. So much passion makes me happy. Sometimes I swear that some kids put themselves in cruise control for high school. So seeing someone this fired up about anything makes me happy. But just being angry isn’t going to help anyone. There is a quote by Elizabeth Kenny “He who angers you conquers you.” Don’t be conquered if you are truly angry. Turn that anger into something constructive. Go protest peacefully, write letters to your senators and lead social media campaigns. But, do not just wallow in your anger and don’t root for Trump to fail. Make you voice heard, enough voices calling for change will not fall on deaf ears.
Criticism if not constructive does no good. Be constructive do everything that you can to make sure your voice is heard. It seems like a daunting thing but, just take one step at a time. Root for Trump to succeed, no matter how much you hate him it will only make the country better.
