Halime Valide Sultan was one of the consorts of Mehmed III and mother of at least two princes and two princesses. Her origins are uncertain, but she was probably a Circassian slave.
She gave birth to her first child in 1587, Şehzade Mahmud, then to the future Mustafa I around 1601-2. She also had two daughters, whose names or dates of birth were not recorded; one married Kara Davud Pasha in 1604, the other Cığalazade Mahmud Paşa in 1612. The latter died in the last years of Ahmed I’s reign.
As mother of the eldest son (Handan’s elder sons had died around 1597), Halime was supported by several viziers and the janissaries as well, when she asked Mehmed III to declare Mahmud his heir and to give him a province to rule. The sultan, though, was wary of giving such prominence to his eldest son, who was already so popular with the janissaries, and never acconsented. Furthemore, the queen mother Safiye Sultan deeply distrusted Halime, and thought she was plotting to have Mehmed III removed from the throne or, worse, assassinated. When Halime made the mistake of asking a fortune teller the destiny of her son, Safiye acted and persuaded the sultan to execute his eldest son. Şehzade Mahmud was strangled in mid-June 1603 and Halime exiled to the Old Palace.
Halime stayed in the Old Palace till the enthronement of her son Mustafa in 1617. She excercised great power as Valide Sultan as her son was mentally unstable. Nevertheless, he was dethroned twice, first for Osman II and then for Murad IV. Halime insisted that her son’s life be spared and in the end he was taken back to the Kafes.
Halime retired to the Old Palace again and lived there till her death. It is not known when she died. – requested by anon

♔ Mary was the unluckiest ruler in British history. A more glittering and charismatic queen could not be imagined, and yet Scotland was a small and divided country, prey to it’s larger neighbors. On top of this, the Protestant Reformation had combined with the factionalism of the lords to create a moment when the monarchy was more than usually venerable. “Mary Queen of Scots got her head chopped off!” is still a familiar children’s skipping rhyme in Scotland. But to let the end of her life overshadow the whole is an injustice. The odds were stacked against her from the beginning. – (Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart)

✧ Her personal charm captivated almost everyone she met. Very few people could resist her. Her grandmother, Antoinette de Bourbon, Duchess of Guise, described her as ‘very pretty indeed’, and likely to be a beautiful woman, with an especially smooth complexion. Her fond grandmother described her eyes as deep-set, beneath a high forehead. Their colour was light-brown, and her hair was very fair, although it later darkened to red-gold. As much as anything, Mary’s physical attractiveness was in her grace and lightness of movement. [x]

Princess Tarakanova: She pretended to be the daughter of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna from her secret marriage to A. G. Razumovsky. By the order of Catherine II, Count A.G. Orlov lured Tarakanova out of Italy and brought her to Saint Petersburg where she was imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress and died of tuberculosis. The official version of Princess Tarakova’s story was published in the Encyclopedic Dictionary. There is also a legend that Tarakanova died during the great flood of 1777 in her cell.
