A lot of people here don’t know this about me. But I actually went to medical school and was going to be a medical doctor at one point. I actually started SuperKnova while on leave from medical school. However, I never really talked about it on this platform. Partly because of what I came to realize about why I chose to go. When I was younger, I believed all the things that my family and society told me: that being a transgender woman was one of the most shameful things I could be in this world. Therefore, I felt I had to do something over-the-top respected by society (like being a doctor) just to be seen as human. I felt it was my responsibility to earn the extreme respect of others because who I was, inherently, was something shameful. If I didn’t do something big and grand, then I “deserved” all the mistreatment I received. That toxic lie subconsciously guided my life decisions and goals for the first 20 years of my life. It led me to sacrifice my happiness and physical/emotional health just to achieve these life “milestones”. 

However, thankfully I know better now. I know that I, like everyone, deserve basic human respect no matter what I do or don’t do in life. “Goals_” is inspired by this journey. It’s about the darkside of working towards a life “goal” (aka my previous self desperately vying for the approval of society, my parents etc.) and the toxic havoc you can wreck upon yourself if you let it. But “Goals_” is also about the opposite. It’s about the joy and exhilaration of working towards things you truly are passionate about because we only have one life to live. It’s an emotional song for me and I hope it can resonate with you or maybe even inspire you to break away from your own internalized expectations and seek out on your own path. 

Goals_  is out now for streaming. The official music video comes out via live premiere this Friday May 7th at 8:30pm CT / 9:30pm ET on YouTube. I’ll be on IG live starting at 8pm to chat about the video and also after the video ends to hang out and answer questions! 😊
