Cover Letter
February 19th, 2016
Mary Frances Dale
NCCWSL Graduate School and National Conference for College Women Coordinator
1111 Sixteenth St. NW
Washington, DC 20036
Dear Mrs. Dale,
I am currently a student at Johnson and Wales University in Denver, Colorado. My outlet of study is counseling psychology and this major has brought me to look at all worldly problems through that same lens. The lens I am speaking of is made up of a need for social justice and recognition of all human rights. Seeing how women’s rights are being mistreated again and again in society had brought me to a standstill; fully unsure of how to respond and how to take action.
I am writing to you in regards to your insinuated stance with women’s rights in America today.  I have a piece that may be of some interest to you for the upcoming NCCWSL conference in June. For my Advanced Composition class I have written a research paper describing the injustices with the popular idea of tattooing and how this matter is closely related to feminism. I am looking for some feedback on this piece and your critical advice on educating myself within the realms of feminism. I feel confident in my efforts that you will connect with my writing and will be able to provide me with such feedback. I truly want to know how to make an impact for women’s rights in my own community and with some refinement maybe make an appearance at the upcoming conference.
At first, I formed my topic to be about the counterculture of tattoos and the act of tattooing. Then, as I spent hours searching the web and library I came to a standstill once again. Almost every article I had looked into, involved the shame and societal consequences women face when they receive their ink. So, this time I turned over my stand still and changed my topic of the paper to one that you may value. One focusing on the societal boundaries set up for women in the tattooing world and how feminism is the answer for change.
Within my paper, I discuss the many different aspects of tattooing and how women are judged in society more harshly for their tattoos than their male counterparts. This paper explains the perceptions of women in society within a broad scope. This idea is expanded with the opinion from a vast majority of people that women carrying any sort of tattoos are perceived as untrustworthy, rebellious, and yours and my own favorite word for women, “slutty”. The paper also discusses the sexualization of women’s bodies. Throughout my research I rationalized that women’s bodies are owned by society and the way they are treated explains these opinions so. The idea of a women’s body being used as an outlet for society can be explained by the media, rape cases and a couple of studies done by Nicholas Gueguen. The studies main focus was on the perceptions that people held of women with and without tattoos, which helped explain body image and the pedestal it sits on in society. This research has opened my eyes to the atrocities that break down women in society. This popularity of tattooing in the past few years can serve as a way to influence a change in the perceptions of women today.
I think this would be a good insert for the upcoming conference as it will influence a change in the perceptual thinking of women right now. I can be reached at [email protected] . I look forward to hearing your feedback and additions. Thank you so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Ella Hannon
I chose to write to Mary Frances Dale because she is the coordinator of the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. I originally found the conference off the American Association of University Women’s website and believed that my topic would appeal to this organization greatly. I wrote to Mrs. Dale with the intent to either add an aspect to the conference that has not been thought of yet or to get an invitation to speak or attend the conference.

Tuning into Tattoos
The rising popularity with tattoos over the years, made me wonder if all the past stigmas that the majority of people had of tattoos were true. These stigmas being that tattoos are rebellious, unprofessional and or inappropriate. These stigmas apply overarching stereotypes to people who have tattoos, that they too are unprofessional, inappropriate and rebellious too. Being a millennial, I highly disagree with this stereotype and it seems like most millennial beings do. if you take into account the rise in the amount of tattoos people receive year to year you can view this change in opinion. Going with this wave of popularity, this topic is important because most people who still hold these outdated stigmas need clarification of this question in order to move away from those long held stereotypes.
These images are explaining the long past of tattoos and the pubic’s view on them at that time. At first, one reader can see that tattoos in America were segregated to the few being sailors or soldiers. This is a key aspect to follow throughout the photo album because one can see at the end how widespread tattoos have become. Another key theme within this photo album is that all the pictures go in a timeline form. This will help people see the changing ideals in America and how much the tattoo scene has improved.
Tumblr media
This image displays the tide of the beginning of tattoos while put to use within war and more popular as a symbol within sailors. The function of the tattoo in the sailors eyes were to mark there journeys, while for the wartime veterans it was so share the bond with their brothers in the war. Both aspects of the tattoo seem meaningful at the time giving leigh way to the engraving in the skin. Having the image of Popeye also represents the way people viewed tattoos. They were meant for rebellious, strong willed men and nothing else, it is also important to realize that the woman co-star, Olive Oyl does not have any tattoos because it does not go with her feminity.
Tumblr media
This image resembles the rise of gang tattoos in the 40s. With the popularity of tattoos  for the purpose of tagging and branding different gang slang, the public began to view most people with tattoos in a general scope. I believe this is where the bad stigmas of tattooing arose, giving up connotations of rebellion, distrust and danger within the tattoo scene.
Tumblr media
This double sided image displays a businessman hiding his creative self within his suit while at the workplace. The bad stigmas given up in society stayed engraved into the minds of citizens for quite some time. This image displays the fight people took up in 2006 to break down those same stereotypes.
Tumblr media
This photo was taken at my place of work, Four Friends Kitchen. This image showcases the employee, Brittany showing off her quarter sleeve tattoo. Moving to Denver, this was the first job that I have ever had where tattoos were encouraged and truly appreciated. This image also shows the changing public eye of tattoos, in the fact that jobs are becoming more open to the idea of them.
Tumblr media
Finally, this last image represents my first step in joining the wave of other people in tattooing. I took this photo myself so no credit is needed. It is cool to see the changing tides of tattoos and the spirit that comes with it. From my own personal experience, people with tattoos have pride for repping their art, they show off their masterpieces with a smile on their face and a glint in their eye. It seemed as though everyone who had a tattoo before I got my own seemed to be in a little family that supported each other with what ever ink they received. Now, I too have experienced that rush. I am happy with the way I feel with my tattoo and I know the public will see it that way too.

Come on people, just fact check
Whether there used in court, the office or even at home, people everywhere have been using quotes that are CLEARLY not cited correctly and it is getting out of hand. With a computer in almost every house, having this information of the world gives so many sources of error when people do research.  People feel overwhelmed with the vast amount of knowledge spewed out by Google that they just blindly believe it is all true.
Well, I’m bursting that bubble of safety and I am telling you that a lot of it is not true!
Take this quote allegedly by Ghandhi…
Tumblr media
If you take a look at the quote, it is a perfect explanation of why customer service matters. A perfect precedent that employees should have in the workplace. Even with a perfect person saying it. It is the most perfect quote for the most perfect citation. Well it is Mahatma Gandhi after all, he is maybe one of the most famous Human Rights Activists in the world. So, if this famous person is credited with it why even second guess it. I mean it’s Gandhi, he totally would of said this right? How could Gandhi be wrong? Think like this and just add this quote among all the other Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King Jr. citations you found for your fancy.  Or you could wake up and look at what your doing!
Don’t feel bad, you are not alone in this. People everywhere are schemed to believe in Propaganda and false advertising.  This quote is most likely used by bosses everywhere in the workplace. Giving out this mentality to all the workers in an establishment will setup a precedent to the employees that  “the customers always right”.  According to the service- ability website, “intemperate customer behavior is not to be seen as a fault in the customer, it should be viewed as a sign that something is wrong with us and our product” (A Customer). The motivation based off the “Gandhi” quote is seen once again giving another reason in fact why this quote came to be so popular for employees.  Myths like this quote are seen everyday in society because it is easier to believe in something with an allusion than question its credibility. I mean come on, it’s not like Gandhi is going to be mad at you for second guessing his alleged statements! But then again most people believe that since an allusion or a reference to something famous was used within any type of context it has to be true. “An allusion may be drawn from history, geography, literature, or religion” and in this case, the citation used an outlet of both history and religion(People). This is the sad reality of our society right now. People believe that since one person seems smarter for using an evident literary technique that they deserve the applause for it; they deserve no critiques.
But where did this quote come from?
Taken from quote investigator, it looks like the history of this quotation has been evolving for quite some time now. In 1941, the first record of this quotation was caught at the end of an interview with Kenneth B. Elliott. Being the vice president in charge of sales for an automobile company, Kenneth showed what it meant to value customers by summarizing this famous quotation. Over time employers everywhere rephrased and reworded the quote to be used as a motivator once again for their employees. The quote was attributed to Gandhi in a 1970’s journal, “Foreign Trade of India”, to push the advertising of an Indian film. Yet, how come no one at the time argued with that quote? It seems so clear as to why Gandhi didn’t say it.
If you look at the saying with a critical eye, it really makes one question. Why would Gandhi even be involved with customers?
Tumblr media
According to Biography.com, he was a political, social and religious activist but he wouldn’t of taken the time to explain to people an issue so minuscule as customer service. And he sure wouldn’t be remembered today for that granted all the other accomplishments he had in life.
Tumblr media
It is so very important that people stand up for what they think is right and I feel that  many people know this fact, yet ignore the obvious. They allow social myths like this impact their daily lives with little to no interruption. As millennials take the throne in society we need to work together to fight the ignorance. We are better than citing memes, Facebook posts and satire articles as REAL sources.
So, Please save public figures like Gandhi with me and just fact check!

Detroit teachers stage “sickout” over horrible conditions, force schools to close
Eighty-eight of Detroit’s 97 public schools were closed Wednesday when teachers participated in a districtwide “sickout” to push for demands related to school conditions and their rights as employees. The protests align with a very high profile visitor in Detroit.

Quote
“Realistic is boring, we see that everyday. You need a bit of poetic expression in your art work.”
Artist On The Run (via roses-will-die-blood-will-fall)
.... Ever since class, I have honestly been wondering if any quotes can truly be quoted. People say a thousand things each day. If I say one thing worth quoting, how do I know a thousand other people haven’t said that before or after me.
It’s all just a ploy to win people over through the use of allusions. Bringing something they know to be famous, alive through some phrase that’ll grab the attention of the people, employees, or discourse community.
