Natalie Portman being confused by the fact that you have to say “hi” to someone before starting a conversation in France got me like ?????
#im from germany and even though i think here it also varies there is some sort of greeting that happens either when you enter the shop or#when you start talking to someone#but i learned english as my second language in school with a book obviously made for the german market#and there was a whole ass chapter dedicated to how you definetly never ever in a million years start a conversation in the UK by just asking#a question as you would in german (do you know what the time is?) but you absolutely definitely 1000% need to be _polite_ and put at least#a would you be so kind at the start to not immediately be shunted back to germany by the guy on the street you tried to ask for directions#so now i am hyper aware of this and tend to speak like i am but a humble peasant in the midst of kings in english...so yeah

But not when you're reading a book. Much to think about.
#theres definitely stuff happening but ive never really thought about the actual process lol#id say i have the characters in my minds eye but more like models? like i dont envision every move they make as it happens so most of the#things do happen as words but if theres a major change the scene image in my head kinda changes#its not only still images theres def movement somewhere but only for some stuff...no idea how my brain decides for which one#and i try to stay away from real actors bc i really enjoy building up characters in my mind#but also not necessarily from their physical descriptions but more based on vibe (??)#and I dont actually do that on purpose sometimes my brain just decides to ignore the descriptors and make up its own...and i so sometimes i#can get a bit confused when for example a characters haircolour is suddenly mentioned and its not what ive been thinking of bc my brain#decided nope no brown hair today you did not read that this character is now blonde#(a really weird example for this is Inej from Six of Crows who for some inexplicable reason has white hair in my mind which is so fucking#inconvenient for that specific character if you think about how she her entire thing is blending into the shadows????)#(or Alina from Shadow and Bone [okay im sensing a theme lol] who ive been seeing as a redhead the entire time even though she is clearly#described as having dark hair...i literally had to go back to the start of the book to find the passage about that bc i was so convinced she#had red hair...)#and even for stuff i should have an actors likeness for (e.g. fanfic about a movie) the people in my head tend to be sooo far off the actual#actors that sometimes i see pictures or gifs from the movie and think nahh thats not what that character looks like...#yeah i dont know my brain does most of the thinking for me and im just along for the ride lol

I get (and mostly agree with) the posts on here talking about the importance of physical media vs digital but sometimes the tone of like 'if it's physical media you'll always have it unlike digital media' you get in these posts is deeply silly like this is in fact something that's notably famously not true of physical media actually. you can quite literally lose everything by only having physical media. both is good etc etc.
