Martin Luther K.I.N.G. by Myke Y.U.N.G.
When people think of a king, they think about
Great riches, golden crowns, and royal scandals
But this king doesn’t have any of these things yet
His impact on the world is groundbreaking and
His effect on American society is unprecedented
Because without him, movies, TV, sports, politics
And other forms of media and culture wouldn’t
Have diverse voices and faces. Because without
Him, gateways to advancement and ladders to
Reach unbelievable milestones would have been
Locked to anyone who didn’t fit a certain image
Because without him, I wouldn’t have been able
To become friends with people who possess great
Talents and genuine passion due to me having a
Different color of skin. Because without him, Joyner
Lucas’ “ I’m Not A Racist” video wouldn’t have become
A viral hit, showing that we need to come together as
Humans rather than be divided by stereotypes.
This king worked to Kill the threat of segregation and
Racism. This king Is a role model of fighting for the right
To be treated fairly. This king Never resorted to violence
To make his point or for his voice to be heard. This king
Gave his all for the possibility of a future where all races
And cultures can live together in peace and harmony. While
That is future is still far from coming true, he gave us a blueprint
To follow and it’s up to us to either contribute or work against
The dream this king work so hard to make come true.

Comrades and Confidence by Myke Y.U.N.G.
Sometimes I feel life puts me in situations where I’m
Out of my comfort zone and I’m set with a task that
Seems all but impossible whether it is finishing a 20
Page essay by the end of the night and I’m still stuck
At page two, doing driving school while my mind is
Stressed out to the max, or having to decide what
I want to do with my life in a week or I will be seen
As weak minded in the eyes of others. These trials
May seem to be insurmountable for me even at
My absolute best to vanquish, but then I realized that
I don’t have to shoulder these burdens solo and there’s
Someone in my corner encouraging me to not put the
Towel down, there’s an ally ready to fight by my side, and
There’s a muse shooting me with bursts of resolve and courage
To endure through these times and give me a second wind
Of energy when I feel like I’m drained out.
They calm my nerves when my mind tries to
Act like a psychic, acting like it knows when I’m
Going to be decimated by the next hurdle. They snap
Me back to reality when I’m in a cocoon of my own doubts
And fears, ready to emerge as an anti-social butterfly.
They make me realize that I’m more talented than I give
Myself credit for, but at the same time, don’t let the praise
Go to my head, but instead let it dawn on me how grateful
I am that I made it this far and appreciate my flaws as my strengths
Rather than as my setbacks. They inspire me to hustle twice as
Hard to get to the finish line of my dreams and goals, when I see
Them accomplish a major achievement in their life. They show
Genuine sincerity at my problems and complaints when everyone
Else shrugs it off like a speck of dust that got on their shirt.
They are comrades of mine and while we all are on different
Paths, we are connected by a bond that can’t be simply shredded
By misinterpretation of opinions or a gap in distance that would
Make most people give up on putting all that effort to keep the
Connection. I would use all my drive, creativity, skills, resources,
And energy residing in my soul to help them when they are at their
Lowest, defend them when they are being attacked by forces too
Strong for them to handle alone, cheer them up when they are being
Suffocated in a cloud of stress, and give them strength when they
Feel their souls are being leeched by hatred. And it’s not because I
Feel I owe them for their services or indebted to them for giving me
Something I couldn’t attain by myself, but because we are confident
Warriors who are motivated by each other triumphs and downfalls and
Won’t put down their swords of passion until each of us have fulfilled our
Goals, dreams, and ambitions, even if it’s farther than the eye can see

Solar Lunar Love Story by Myke Y.U.N.G.
There were once two tribes with
One being called the Blazing Sun
And the other being the Tranquil
Moon with them being opposite
In both nature and personality.
The Blazing Sun were passionate,
Creative thinkers that would spend
Their time working on projects as
Diverse as the multiple ideas that
Would come to their mind like a
Fire powered train that can travel
Great distances or a tribal slam poetry
Tournament for them to vent their
Tempers because their passion spread
To their attitudes and it didn’t take much
For them to go on a fiery tantrum which
Offended the Tranquil Moon tribe which
Were calm and strategic dancers who spent
Their time learning moves for dances based
On the phases of the moon and having
Grand recitals with other members of
The tribe, but the members of the Blazing
Sun saw them as performers with no
Feeling or emotion in their limbs and
Felt their dances were too simple. So
The two tribes kept themselves apart
Like light and dark clothes when doing
Laundry and their kids couldn’t even
Join together when having fun, but
Love has a way of blooming even
When the sun and moon can’t
Be in the sky at the same time
With an inventor of the Blazing
Sun began sending letters to a
Dancer of the Tranquil Moon through
Very clever methods and they
Then begin to make secret visits
To each other tribe and they found
Places where they had joy in sharing
Their different talents and skills with
Each other, but eventually their periods
Of dreamlike happiness were in threat
Of going through an eclipse when the
Family members from each tribe found
Out about their covert operations. The
Couple was not only forbidden from being
With each other, but each tribe blamed
The other for this unlikely relationship to
Happen. However this couple wouldn’t’
Let their love be overshadowed by close
Minded fear so they made one more secret
Mission with the inventor using all the
Skills they learned and the dancer using
All the techniques they mastered to make a shadow
Ballet performance powered by the same
Energy the Blazing Sun tribe used for most
Of their gadgets and the moves being a fusion
Of the Tranquil Moon’s calmness and the Blazing
Sun’s passion and originality and at first both tribes
Were offended by their culture being used in this manner,
But as the performance went on, the Blazing Sun tribe
Were impressed with this use of their technology and
Couldn’t believe the calmness actually highlighted the
Passion of the dancers and the Tranquil Moon were
Awed by how the Blazing Sun technology made the dances
Feel more memorizing and that the originality of the moves
Brought a new sense of calmness they never felt before
And this performance not only let the couple be in love
Without acting like secret agents, but opened the eyes
Of both tribes and made them realize the advantages of
Having their tribes share not only their skills but interact
With each other, not letting fear of their ways being tainted
Stop them from making new hobbies, professions, and of
Course relationships that would win an Oscar if made into
A movie that was shot under the combined light of the sun
And the moon.

Summer Friends by Myke Y.U.N.G. and Friends
Summer is my season where carefree vibes
Reign and vacation plans are the highlights
Of conversations. I'm a born Leo and the
Heat wave can't compete with my passion
Steaming red hot with it keeping back fear
From making me pale white and it helps me enjoy
The calm moments like looking up at a blue July
Sky, but I'm not the only one who sees summer beyond
The high degrees framed above the fireplace of your
Local news station. I have a friend that likes to eat
Watermelon not just because of its sweet taste, but
Also because it's a tidal wave of hydration that beats out
Inflammation. I have a friend that likes mojitos with mint
And crushed ice making them feel like they're in a beach
House soaking in vibes as chilled as their drink. I have a
Friend that likes golden hour drives listening to their favorite
Songs letting their worries wash away as the miles pass by
With the heat being an afterthought in the rearview. I have
A friend that likes roller skating with music, friends, and
Memories all coming full circle, having mastered a skill
With passion at its core. I have a friend who likes to play
Pickleball with their head in the game and their sweat
Only being a sign of progress to be a tournament champ
In the future. I have a friend who likes block parties as
They get in deep with the beats of the summer jams
Dancing in the background while spending time with
Family and friends is the main attraction in their eyes
As well as chowing down courses straight from the grill.
I have a friend who in their own poetic way likes sitting
By the water in peace and the quiet only being interrupted
Only by the waves of Lake George lapping at the shore.
I have a friend who loves summer nights reminiscing
About the good times and successful schemes while
Savoring this carefree season. Finally, but not least,
I have a friend that likes the summer tradition of fireworks
Seeing the lights cover the sky in more colors and designs
Than the phases of the moon while flashbacks of summers
Past fill inside their mind saying goodbye to another arc of summer
That ranges from remembering those who have left this world
To celebrating America's birthday to at the end for those lucky
Few, getting a well deserved day off from work enjoying the
Dying embers of the hottest season of the year, but my favorite
Part is enjoying that spare time with my friends.

Signature Love Dish by Myke Y.U.N.G.
We take those meals made
With love for granted. For
Me it’s fried pork chops with
Grease sizzling made by mom
And homemade mashed potatoes crafted
By grandma with dessert being rice pudding
Also made by grandma, but that course is
Restricted to holidays yet whether it’s a full
Course meal with all the sides making your
Tongue ready to dive in and savor each
Bite like you’re eating from a restaurant
That’s going to close today or a brand new
Food creation that you might be nervous to
Try, but it was made by a loved one and even
If the result was off the mark, the memory it
Will create will last longer in your head than any
Takeout order. It’s those meals we remember when
It seems like every block we build lately has been crumbling
Into Lego pieces, when a sliver of doubt enters your
Carefully guarded mindset threatening to send you
Back to scattered thoughts, when everything you’re
Used to seeing is no longer part of your daily life because
Of a move, or when life gets so complicated you need a
Whiteboard as big as a movie poster to spell it all out and
You missed when it was as simple as coming down the stairs
For dinner. I’m grateful to still have those meals once in a while,
But know the next one down the line is not guaranteed so if
You still get those meals in your life, cherish it and thank the
Person behind it.

Family Sized Meal by Myke Y.U.N.G.
All of us had a busy day and we’re wearing stress like an extra coat
With life threatening to swirl us into a vortex of mental chaos, but
It’s time to put that aside and sit down with the ones who support
Us like a stack of books under a broken bed, who we provide for like a
Mama bear to her cubs, and who we care for so deeply, you need scuba
Gear to dive into the heart of it. It’s time to eat a meal that’s been
Made with hands of effort and experience with the food on the plate
Ranging from old- fashioned recipes passed down from generations to
Fresh edible, experiments eager for praise which also reflect the faces,
Hungry to eat dishes that will satisfy their appetite, but also give
Comfort to bad attitudes and tired souls that slowly whittle down
After great conversation, gripping stories, and slow down before you
Choke laughs. Then there is that moment after all the plates are put
Away and you’re sitting on that couch or chair trying not to fall into
A full belly, slumber that you hope you can enjoy a dinner like this
At least one more time.

Fantasy Halloween Party by Myke Y.U.N.G.
The Halloween party is tonight
And I don’t know who I want to be
Should I be a doctor rocking an 80’s wig
Should I be a caped masked wrestler superhero
Should I be a samurai with cat ears and white gloves
Should I be a pirate with a gold chain and a cowboy hat
Nope I’ll keep it classic with a mummy outfit, but put on my
Signature touch by adding a blue polka dot bow tie and
My cherry red leather jacket that shows I’m the life of
The party.
But when I get to the party, I felt I was losing my life
At the party with the music feeling low key, the food
Tasting bland, and the dance floor being dry like Dracula
Came and sucked the rhythm of everyone in the area,
So here I was doing the slow rock trying not to act like
I just been tricked into thinking this party was going to
Be a treat when all of a sudden, someone with a Deadpool
Mask but dressed in a midnight blue suit took the mic from
The DJ and said this party needs to be spiced up and said it’s
Time for a costume competition and whoever wins will be
Crowned the king or queen of Halloween.
Now at first everyone looked at this odd stranger like
A zombie must have ate his brains and common sense,
But then Gentleman Deadpool also said whoever wins,
Will also get a $50 gift card for Panera and then everyone was
Feeling it, but only four brave souls was up for the challenge
Because it turns out whoever entered had to do some sort of
Performance with their costume and while people want that
Treat , they weren’t going for the trick of playing the fool.
So first up was Blue Fairy Queen who tried to sing
Like she was Beyonce, but came sounding like a
An off-beat karaoke singer. Then came Dr. Pimp
With his rhinestone cane and white lab coat
Trying to do stand -up comedy but he was booed
Off like he was a ghost. Next came Count Batman,
Who was dressed like the famed hero, but he also
Had a vampire hood yet he was actually good,
Rapping a scene from Hamilton plus he was doing
It as Batman so he was pretty much the guy in the
Lead, but then I was the last contestant and I did
16 bars on why Freddy was better than Jason and
I got a divided response, but Gentleman Deadpool
Said it was a close call between me and Count Batman,
Mainly because Gentleman Deadpool was feeling that
Cherry red polka dot combo and said this contest will
Be settled by a rap battle.
So Count Batman came up and spit some toxic lines
At me like I stole his woman and I was bragging about
It and he was getting the crowd’s love and I knew I
Had to spit some lyrical fire or I can say goodbye to
Free food, so I rapped about how wearing this costume
Was an escape from the reality I’ve been living and this
Character I’ve been playing as is the closest I can get
Right now to feeling free from the shackles of society
And then I ended it by speaking rapidly, saying long
Live the monster mash, and threw my tie out into the
Crowd. At first the crowd was stunned silent at what I
Said, but then they cheered like I was a celebrity brought
Out in the middle of a concert and Gentleman Deadpool
Declared me the winner, gave me the gift card, and said
“You got bars, man. You do kid parties.” So tonight was
Unlike any Halloween I ever had and went from being
Dead to making me feel more alive than I had ever been
But while it was great to be $50 richer, the real prize was
To have a thrilling night filled with excitement and memories
That would make the rest of the week unforgettable, oh, and
Showing that cherry red leather jackets, blue polka dot bow
Ties, and the dreams of a mummy can take down anything.

Fantasy Halloween Party 2 by Myke Y.U.N.G.
So, two years ago, I won a costume contest that involved rap battles,
Hero mash ups, and Panera gift cards. It was an experience I would never
Forget and that food from Panera was as delectable as brains are to a zombie.
But since. then, my thrills have been dry and my mummy costume has been
Gathering dust, which actually makes it more authentic, but that’s not the point.
However tonight is once again Halloween and it’s time for the champ to defend
His crown like a werewolf at the head of his pack. Gentleman Deadpool, who
Now goes by Lord Deadpool, sent me an invitation to his Halloween talent
Showdown and the grand prize is a $100 Visa gift card, which I could use to buy Oh so many things.
So, I grabbed my dusty mummy costume and added a baby blue leather jacket,
A dark, black fedora, and my championship title belt that I got from karaoke night
At Applebee’s to complete my outfit. When I went to Lord’s Deadpool’s spot for
The Halloween showdown, I realized he either is filthy rich or he’s connected
Like a spider’s web to wealthy and famous friends, because the spot was a
Grand mansion with a pool and decorated like it came from the set of A
Haunted Mansion and when I went in, it was crowded with people with a
Variety of costumes ranging from skeletons to superheroes to Game of Thrones
Icons, but there was no one with my style and I saw nothing to fear of until right
Behind my back, a hand grabbed my shoulder and whispered, “ The gift card is
Is going to be mine for the taking and so is your tacky belt.” I turned around and
Lo and behold like a spooky specter of bright colors, it was five people dressed
Like the original Power Rangers from 1993. I said,” Cool concept, but I’m a pro
At these kind of events and you should go back to Angel Grove to sip from your
Juice boxes.” Then they did a synchronized dance move and said we’ll see and
Marched past me like they’re the boogeyman and I should be scared.
So, after a few drinks, the Monster Mash, and a couple of good conversations
with a pair of pixie ladies, the time came for the talent showdown. Of course, the
Power Rangers wanted to go first and they did a synchronized dance routine of
The dance from Thriller mixed with b-boy moves and did a freestyle using the
Theme from Power Rangers as their beat. This pretty much scared everyone
From competing like these guys were made of leeches and they’ll suck your soul
By even trying to go against them. However, I couldn’t let them have their way
Around this showdown without any challenge and tarnish my reputation.
Besides no one talks bad about my belt, that I worked so hard for by singing in
Front of that mirror for hours, and gets away scot free. Unfortunately, I had no
Idea to top their performance, but then a hooded figure stepped beside me and
Said, “ I can help you out, but we split the card 50/50 once we’ve win.” At first, I
Was going to tell him no way, but I swallowed down my pride like a candy apple
And said ok what’s the plan. The figure told me and we went up on the stage
With our backs turned and then the theme from Ghostbusters came on and the
Figure revealed himself to be Count Batman, my old rival from the contest 2
Year ago, and he did a crazy lyrical freestyle on how he’s not afraid of ghosts and
Then I did the chorus like a karaoke pro and finally we did the Kid n’ Play
Dance. After the performance, everybody clapped and Lord Deadpool said,
“Tonight the champ and his rival has showed us the power of teamwork and
Raised our hands in victory.” The Power Rangers ran out like they just saw Lord
Zedd and tonight not only became a memorable Halloween, but showed that
Sometimes bitter enemies can do great things once they put their talents together.

The Role of A Father by Myke Y.U.N.G.
In this world of runaway dads
And single mothers living on welfare paper pads
Guys need to step up and do their part and stop acting wild
I hope I can fulfill a father’s role when it comes to having a child
I know I can’t be a superdad
Coming up with a solution whenever my child is mad
But I got a blueprint to follow by looking at my father
And yet I have to add my own style to the process that can be a bother
But it ends up being worth it when you see your child following that dream
I can’t understand why fathers run in a steam
Of fury saying they aren’t up to the role
When all a child wants is love and encouragement from the one they console
That’s something a father should be able to give despite his age
And be able to do whether they are making good money or hustling on a minimum wage
Note: This poem is published in the Spring 2012 issue of the Amendment,a literary journal of VCU, under my real name, Michael Bell.
