The reason why Wilbur said "maybe it's for the best some people don't know I'm back" was that he was aware that Niki "That Sounds Like Someone Who Makes A Lot Of Empty Promises" Nihachu Would and Could punt him into the sun as soon as she saw his slutty little ass with his three gray hair pixels on the street. It's on sight. This woman dissed him to Hell and Back in front of his formerly bereaved Father, she's gonna put him back in the groud. He was salty he didn't get a grave, well she'll give him a cake that has "Cunt" written on it and as he stares at it in disbelief she'll just clock him in the face.

I think that there is a significant character trait to draw from Wilbur’s perception of Dream.

What happens in-canon is the following - Wilbur initially speaks as if Dream is a terrible, terrible person. He speaks quite graphically about this, citing that he would have killed him had he had the chance. He sees (or, at least, has the memory of seeing) Dream doing something despicable and his mind leaps to the "this person is absolutely abhorrent" conclusion.

Then, he seems to have some kind of epiphany that elevates his understanding of Dream.

A normal mindset would perhaps level this percieved good out into a mid-tone of gray, or some kind of inbetween morality, but Wilbur's mind leaps from the "black" perception of a villain (re: Stick it to the man, the man being Dream) to the absolute "white" perception of him being a hero.

What I'm saying, is that Wilbur thinks in absolutes.

There is no in-between. Either you're a despicable villain who deserves being disembowled, or you're a hero who doesn't deserve his punishment. And for Wilbur's perception of Dream, he appears to struggle with applying both of his "black" traits with his "white" ones, flipping between regarding him as an enemy or a hero on the regular.

And this is confusing! It's confusing to people who are onlookers. It appears that Wilbur simply can't make up his mind at times, though he often settles on the overwhelming "hero" descriptor.

A lot of people cite this thought process as being new, but, if you think about it, this black and white thought process has been evident in Wilbur's character from season one. After all, when he no longer sees himself as a good guy (a "white" role), he leaps to self identifying as a villain (a "black" role).

It's called splitting. It's typically prevalent in a particular cluster of personality disorders. It's used to describe a pattern of thought where someone cannot conflate another person's percieved good aspects with their bad aspects.

When you realise that Wilbur has most likely seen the world in this black and white manner for some years, his thought process becomes a lot easier to understand, and his stream becomes significantly less confusing.

and then it starts slipping into a less ironic thing. all within a few hours. basically think of it as a nonsensical improv rp dsmpblr is doing where we rp as extreme fans of a rp smp that isnt real either.
