I was trying to take a picture of Lone Peak.. What developed was a mountain hidden by the clouds. In the words of the late, great Bob Ross, "That's what we call a happy little accident." (at Bigsky Ski Resort)

Built to be (the greatest city in the world)
My trip to NYC yielded different thought provoking material than I thought it would. It’s not what I expected of the city I’ve seen so many times through television screens, the words of other people, or the countless sports events I’ve witnessed over 25 years. It is not THAT city.. the one thats overly crowded and overly brash. Yes, the buildings tower over you, and there are more people (and trash), to go along with it. But these things don’t come from unexplainable circumstances or the justification that “Its just New York”. No.. This city has something else to it. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion, and could very well be an opinion formed by the wide-eyes of a 25 year old child experiencing it for the first time. But I felt something I’ve only felt glimpses of from other cities/places I’ve been (Minneapolis and the Rocky Mountains being two other places with similar feel). New York City is filled with a heartbeat of its own.. an identity that is alive and filled to capacity with a buzz of excitement and life. And I think it is because New York City was built to be more than just a city.
It was built to be the greatest city in the world.
I almost feel naive and narcissistic writing that last sentence. The tendency to find faults rather than enjoy and celebrate the mystery of something has been heavily attached to social media. It is with ease we are able hide behind our screens and do nothing but criticize, and that is something we have started doing habitually. I’m not going to be that closed minded, or insecure individual.
New York City is amazing.
I found myself in tourist mode, staring up at the tallest buildings I have ever seen. In awe that men made them. This city isn’t the hard-pressed city with no heart or time for anything. Its not too crowded, and its not just streets and garbage. It is just the opposite. Yes there is some grit, and toughness to the blue collar majority that resides there, but I met some of the most determined, compassionate people in this city. People who aren’t trying too hard to be something, but rather just trying to do something meaningful. Something so refreshing to see.
The city is old, has some cracks and wear, and has changed a lot in the 300+ years it has been a thriving force in our country. But I feel the one thing that has stayed consistent is the idea that the people here know they live in the greatest city in the world. And they are proud of it. It ties everyone together. The size, style, and decorative features on the buildings here, the quality of the architecture and the amount of thought put into buildings that touch the sky are parallel to that of ancient civilizations. Every person here wants to be apart of it because it has a modern magnificence. Just being here, just walking around these streets, you feel like you are apart of it. You see the care put into every decision, and almost feel like that decision was made for you. This city grabs you and makes you feel like this is exactly where you are supposed to be.. Like you have a chance after all.
