hi!
I don't know if that's true or not because Google says he would have been paid around 70 million, standing to gain more so I don't know (and he gets paid this much because of his role as a producer).
So I don't know why that high of a number, but I couldn't find anything to say it's accurate or even true, and to be honest, my first instinct is to not trust it.
If Mission Impossible went over budget because Chris and Tom wanted to make sure everyone that worked for them could keep their jobs and feed themselves and their families, I say is a good fucking reason to go over budget because countless people lost their jobs and livelihoods during the pandemic.
They know what they're doing, and obviously they wanted to turn a profit, but Tom Cruise could be retired on a island somewhere, more than that, he could be someone that doesn't give a fuck about his employees and just fires them all without thinking about their livelihoods. Trust me, with what I do for a living I can tell you that he had to have some pretty convincing arguments at the time and that if he didn't did whatever it was he needed to do, those people wouldn't have made a buck.
He must've pulled some serious strings and favors which I guarantee you 99% of Hollywood actors/producers and directors wouldn't give a damn about (looking at you Christopher Nolan).
I honestly care more about this and the fact that he's clearly happy and satisfied at this point. Obviously Tom wants to have success, but it's not why he does what he does, he does it because he sees it as his calling, and I respect the hell out him for that and a multitude of other reasons.

I used (I still do on some fronts) have a problem with people that say Ethan is Tom's self insert character.
First because obviously it takes away from him as an actor. I know people like to pretend otherwise, but Tom is a fucking good actor. He has range, plays against type, he can convey so much with just a look or glance, he understands his characters and builds around them phenomenonally.
At every chance some have, they try to take that away from him because of prejudice and because they think being an actor that does action suddenly means one can't act.The thing is - this is about Tom Cruise because we don't see this discourse going around about other actors.
Because like... Ethan is very much not having fun with any of the shit he has to do while Tom clearly is. And I understand that people see Ethan and Mission as Tom's vanity projects to some extent, but Mission was the first movie where Tom had some semblance of control over his own life and is not my place to discuss why that's obviously a big deal for him.
And I think it's telling that people think Ethan "I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders, I love the people around me so much, I care about them so much, I care about everyone so much, I'll do things I don't really want to do to save others, I'm loyal to a fault and I gamble with other people's lives because I am unwilling to compromise, my actions have consequences and I'll live with them for the rest of my life and I care. So much" Hunt is Tom Cruise's self insert.
And I get it - is because they think he sees himself as the "cool hero that saves the world with no repercussions while he gets to do some stunts" but then... *Gestures towards the character...* I just find it ironic, to be honest.
On the other hand, after TFR is very clear that something more personal has happened with Ethan as a character that I still can't put my finger on.

Reminder that Christopher McQuarrie said that he changed the timeline of TFR because one day Tom came downstairs with a longer hair and he told him not to cut it, that they'd change the timeline which literally could mean nothing.
Ok but in all seriousness... Christopher?! What do you mean you're going to change the timeline just because your best friend had a longer hair?
How is this a normal thing to say? I'm genuinely wondering

Tom Cruise has an incredible ability to convey through his eyes what most people wouldn't be able to express in a thousand words.

Sometimes I get annoyed at those people that can't help but talk about how they hate Tom on their tags (I always block them though, 0 fucks given) but then I remember that you can actually see and tell that those who actually know Tom care deeply about him and love him a whole hell lot so yeah, that's what truly matters.

I don't understand hating Tom Cruise but calling yourself a Mission Impossible fan. Like there a hundred thousand movies you could watch and you don't need to invade our tags, can you leave us be?

Oh I can definitely see it as not being marketable and if he were to do it now it'd just cause countless certain people fo be up in arms about it 🙄
I don't think it was an accident tbh. The camera movement and framing felt too deliberate to me, some thought had to be put behind that - especially that moment where the Mysterious Woman puts her hand on Erika's shoulder.
Okay but seriously why does Final Reckoning play like a Hayes Code era queer film. There are so many elements that had me going 🤨🏳️🌈❓in the theaters and my queer friends clocked all the same parts and more, but if I suggested to straight family members that there was something a bit fruity about mi8 they'd think I'd lost it.
President Sloan is gay but we only know this through the implication of emotional intimacy twice removed. "You don't have to say it, I know" "I love you" is right out of a romance novel (with a dash of Han and Leia), but its culmination can be spoken only from across the grave. The camera itself is going so hard on the queer cinema that is The Submarine that even my family went 'hey what was All That with Kodiak though.'
The film waves one big This Is A Heterosexual Movie We Promise flag with the resuscitation scene, yet it's hollow, the hero literally absent from the procedure (he is dead). The rest of the film further transforms it to deconstructive parody by emphasizing the settled depth of Ethan and Benji's emotional connection and commitment in specific contrast to Ethan and Grace's relationship, which is meaningful but still searching for its proper form—in which attempt the romantic suggestion was a misfire, not a culmination. And Grace's arc is away from defining herself with reference to The Hero in favour of a network of found-family relationships. Yet only the hollow image of heteronormative expectation can be baldly pictured, the remainder almost impossible to deny if seen, but almost certain to be missed if you aren't looking for it.
And in the final beat, the culmination of a 30-year character arc Ethan rejects his isolation and chooses to allow himself mutual emotional dependence—with Benji. But they don't clap shoulders and grab shawarma. It's executed with an evasiveness that seems to gesture to something unspoken. Something so precious and protected it can't be looked at directly. Benji must exit the screen before Ethan can follow, as if even having both in sight in the final moment would summon the censors from on high.
In short. Tom. McQ. I have Questions.

Can we all agree that Mission Impossible had any other movie star attached to it as front center a certain group of people would be throwing a hissy fit?
The more I think about it, the more I'm like yeah actually they'd absolutely be throwing a fit if any other movie (especially an action franchise) had a black female president or so many poc people in positions of power or had made it very clear they don't think any country should have control of The Entity but that the USA poses as much of a threat as the freaking "I shall blow up the world" AI does 💀

I was talking to some friends I talked into watching The Final Reckoning and we all agree there is subtext going on between Sloan and the mysterious woman and that something was happening in that submarine.
Like, it's noticeable if you're paying attention and I am truly wondering if that was like... Intentional?
I have so many questions about all of that because the camera movement, especially between Sloane and Mysterious woman felt so deliberate that I can't imagine a director like McQ doing it accidentally so...
What was that about? Like what was the point?

I was spreading the Mcqruise agenda to someone I trust and I love that she bought into it so much that she said she think Chris would struggle if Tom ever decides to do the stunt thing again with some other director.
I asked her why and she said because if Tom is with him he knows for sure he's going to be safe and I'm giggling and kicking my feet.
#tom cruise#christopher mcquarrie#mcqruise#ethan hunt#mission impossible#and I personally think she's right and she should say it#and I also think that played a part in him coming back over and over again#is that thing#I don't think he distrusts other directors and the safety people#but I do think that at least like this he knows that tom is going to be safe because hes following the entire process

So I was wondering what the St. Christopher scapular was about, I still don't have an answer but I think is worth noting that St. Christopher was the patron saint of travelers.
From what I could find in my research, he'd help travelers cross a deadly river, until one day he was asked to help carry an infant. As he'd cross the river, the child would grow in size and become heavier and heavier, but he kept carrying him over.
Once he reached the other side, he found that the child was actually Jesus, and that he told Christopher that at that moment he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders.
I can't help but to think about the parallel between that and Ethan, because he as a character is very much a man that carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
#tom cruise#christopher mcquarrie#mission impossible#ethan hunt#mission impossible dead reckoning#mi tfr#mi tfr spoilers#and ngl i find beautiful that the saint also has chris' first name#it's a nice touch

Thanks for the correction! I wasn't aware he also LGBTQIA + 😊
No, I I'll not shut up about:
Mission Impossible - a 30 years old franchise, quite literally older than I currently am - having a black female president in the current climate. And having said president beinf reasonable instead of trigger happy.
Having multiple poc and women in positions of power.
Having multiple women saving Ethan's ass.
Having some subtext going on between the president and whoever that woman was and nothing anyone says about that will convince me otherwise.
Having an inuk actor playing an inuk character and having their religion being approached and respected all the while she clearly didn't care about speaking anyone else's language.
Doggos! They're vital to the story.
And two LGBTQIA + actors on set.
