Constructing a partnership – Craig Manufacturing Ltd. New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) provides learners with a clear pathway from education to employment. Hartland-based Craig Manufacturing is just one of the many New Brunswick companies that recognize the value of NBCC graduates. “We hire NBCC graduates for two reasons: one, they have the trade skills we need, and two, NBCC teaches them how to think and solve problems,” said Ben Craig, CEO of Craig Manufacturing. “They provide students that build great products with great knowledge and great experience that allow us to compete with companies across the world.” Founded in 1946, Craig Manufacturing makes attachments for heavy construction equipment and their products are sold globally. Approximately 30 percent of their staff are NBCC alumni, with 60 percent of those in supervisory roles coming from NBCC. The company’s Fit-Weld group has the most NBCC representation, with 45 percent of the department graduating from the College. “There are currently opportunities in machining, welding, and engineering, although the job that you start with at Craig Manufacturing probably won’t be the job you finish your career with,” added Craig. “We have NBCC graduates who have worked their way up to senior positions.” NBCC is a significant contributor to New Brunswick’s social and economic prosperity by providing relevant post-secondary training opportunities that match the province’s labour market needs. Through innovative education and hands-on learning opportunities, students graduate with the skills and experience they need to enter the workforce. Craig Manufacturing CFO Heath Alexander is an alumnus of NBCC, graduating from the Business Technology program in 1986. Originally from Carleton County, he has spent most of his career in the area. “Craig Manufacturing is a world-class organization based here in New Brunswick. We provide attachments over North America and even ship worldwide. It’s a tremendous honour and opportunity for me to work here.” Prior to joining Craig Manufacturing, Alexander also spent five years at NBCC as a department head at the Woodstock Campus. “I’m a really strong believer in the NBCC programming, the quality instructors that they have, and the learning from the industry,” added Alexander. Craig Demerchant, a CNC Machinist, is a recent recruit for Craig Manufacturing after graduating from NBCC’s two-year program earlier this year. He’s happy to use his skills in a rewarding career without having to leave the province. “I started at Craig Manufacturing in high school as part of the high school co-op program and when I graduated from NBCC, nobody could compete with Craig, so I took the job offer here,” said Demerchant. “My advice to others is to get out into the field as fast as you can and when you’re done your program at NBCC, there’s a job here for you at Craig.” To learn more visit: https://nbcc.ca by NBCC

The Fire Fighting program is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and practical skills required to perform as a firefighter adhering to the professional organizational policies and procedures of a fire department. Learners develop skills and knowledge required to work safely and effectively as part of a fire service team similar to that of most large municipal fire departments. Today’s Firefighter is involved in an occupation where a variety of circumstances may be encountered with each response. The scope of firefighting goes beyond controlling or extinguishing fires; it includes rescue activities, responding to hazardous material incidents and participation in fire prevention activities. Johanne McInnis Class of 1995 (Chemical Technology) Johanne McInnis was an early pioneer of NBCC’s vision of transforming lives and communities. When she graduated from the Chemical Technology Co-op program in 1995, she marked her transformation from a single mom looking for a better life to a peer mentor who achieved success while helping others find the same. As the recipient of the Student Life Contribution Award during her time at NBCC, Johanne showed early indications of the leadership that would chart her path to career success. She mentored and tutored other students in math and science and improved student participation in campus activities and programs. Her genuine caring nature, combined with a strong work ethic and a desire to continue learning, have facilitated her advancement as a public servant with Canada Border Services Agency, where after a 25-year career, she now serves as a Security Analyst and Advisor at the national level. In this leadership role, Johanne sits on a number of working groups that help employees reach their potential through education and mentoring. Johanne’s leadership also shines in the community. Her personal experience as a single mother led her to take an integral role in the early development of First Steps Housing Inc., which provides a healthy, safe, and supportive environment for homeless pregnant and parenting young women. She continues to contribute to the organization by serving on the Board of Directors. Johanne has volunteered for many years in the community. From 1999-2006 she was the New Brunswick racquetball coach and took five teams to national competitions. Johanne has been a key player at her local sailing club for over 15 years and was awarded the female sailor of the year award in 2019. She was also one of the founding members and first president of the Saint John Whisky Tasting Society. To Learn More Visit: https://ift.tt/3nxT3Fv by NBCC
