Graduation

I am about to graduate from Central Michigan University with a major in Human Resource Management and an Minor in Business information system. Naturally with graduation coming up so close I am actively looking for jobs. I have been applying to jobs since September, and still haven't found one. I am remaining hopeful that there is still a perfect position out there. At this point I am willing to do any job in the HR department. I have interviewed with a ton of companies, but no job has stuck out to me, and I have worked to hard to settle. I am ready to enter the work field, especially because I have had so many great professors at CMU. With all of this being said, I would love to wish my fellow classmates great endeavors wherever they end up after graduation! Fire up forever.

Implementation

Throughout my time in my BIS 315 class I have learned a lot of different ways on how to improve social media. The implantation video that was assigned to us was a very interesting video It was talking about how during the course of this class we have learned different ways to implement social media advertising and different strategies into the business world. This class along with the Hootsuite Modules have taught me a lot about the social medias do’s and don’ts. this is applicable in a business setting and outside of a business setting as well. It is very important to educate yourself and other on the importance of the proper use of social media for running a business. It is also important to help customers learn the value of different social media sites, such as the different tools and tricks for a business that some sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Hootsuite offer for running a business. These topics are just some of the things I have learned throughout my BIS 315 class. Whenever I am on any social media now, I will have a different outlook than before this class. I will make sure that I try to implement all the different tips and strategies that I have been taught.

Hootsuite Module 6

The last module of the Hootsuite Model was lessor 6. This lesson was comprised of five different topics. Which mostly focused on the implementation of using a social media plan and putting in into action. The Hootsuite modules always give good, valuable information. During this model I learned that it is very important to grow the online community while adverting to the right people. While creating a social media advertisement there are four main things to consider. First, what is the ad going to say? Second, who is the ad for? Third, what action is the audience going to take. Lastly, how can the company measure the success of the advertisement. One these are considered the advertisement should be modeled to fit the answers to these self-asked questions. Posting advertisements like these will have a positive impact on the company.

LinkedIn

Recently I have learned to LOVE LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a website that lets people all over the world connect with each other on a professional level. Basically LinkedIn users make a profile that is basically a resume stating the basic things you have accomplished and the users past experience. once the users profile is set up they can connect with other users on the site. This website is a great opportunity for people to get jobs and professionally network. I love this site because it gives me opportunities to check out different companies that i may or may not have head of. it lets me make the connection with different employers to potentially achieve a job.

Reading the book for this social media class, specifically chapters 3-5 have taught me a lot. To break it down more i will breakdown what the books main points by chapter.

Chapter 3: discussed why social media plans fail and what managers can do to increase the growth of their company by using a social media plan.It also stated that managers need to manage from the middle in order to be the most effective leader.  Chapter 4: describes how to create a vision statement. It also describes the six f's attitudes. Then proceeds to break down the individual attitudes.  Chapter 5: chapter five is similar to the Hootuite module 4. it focus on building a community with your audience. Building relationships with the community and potential clients allow the company to grow. Also having a strategic plan helps the company as well. on the other hand the book states that having too much social media exposure can hurt a company. With that being said companies need to find the correct balance to succeed.

Hootsuite module 4

Overall the Hoosuite Modules are a great way to learn about how to brand and portray a company on social media. Module four was more specifically about building relationships with in the online community. Companies that connect with their clients via social media have a better chance at having a higher revenue. Module four is also about using social media to leverage your company. I think the most important thing to take away from this module is the videos that show how to overcome and engage with the audience. As stated in previous posts i love Hootsuite I think it is a great resource to have and use for a growing business.

Big data in corporations.

Big data is big volumes of collected data. Companies use big data to analysis their customers. This does help companies see where they can improve and where their customers are heading. Businesses should be aware of the government trying to get this information and use it for their own personal use. Hackers are always trying to get new information on people to hack them and steal their identity. There are also poor risk assessment. How to solve poor risk assessment, companies need to prepare for the unexpected.  As a consumer people should be aware of what they are putting online. Also they should be aware of the information they are telling companies. Companies need to balance the opportunities given with the threats presented. Developing big data is smart for a company it is a way for them to know their customers, but it is a threat because hackers are just waiting to steal it. I think the best thing to do would be to warn the clients that their data may be compromised.

Hootsuites models

I really enjoy doing the Hootsuite models. I think this website provides free value for people that need help building social media. The latest Hootsuite model that I completed was all about social media strategy. This website provided the A to Z knowledge on how to form a social media strategy for a business. This strategy can apply to any business any size. Using quantitative and Hootsuite models qualitative will help keep the business successful. These Hootsuite models are very useful for failing businesses to improve their tactics. This can be useful for our client project step three because it is all about implementing new ideas and new ways to make the business you chose thrive. Applying these Hootsuite’s techniques to the actual business will help the business become more successful.

ERP Sims eval.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the CMU ERP Sims. Being sick and not being able to be there in person put a damper on my day. With that being said, I was in contact with team GM2, team Auto-owners, peers in our class, and other students at the event live tweeting. I chose to tweet remotely from my bed. I ultimately am bummed I had to miss this huge event. I am however glad that my classmates were able to keep me, and the rest of the world, informed what was happening. 

Team GM2 placed third in flight 2 congratulations, all the hard work finally paid off. Also, a big congratulations to Team Sage for coming in first overall!

Social Media Strategy’s

Having a professional presence on social media is huge. No matter is someone is a professional social media consultant or just a average Joe. A persons presence on social media is what represents them. 

Businesses and big corporations need to utilize social media to their advantage. By implementing a business strategy a firm can plan out all the little details to make the companies social media perfect. The social media strategy is put in place so all the employees can be on the same professional level, and represent the firm in the best way. This plan can even include tips and tricks to avoid a social media disaster. By using different tactics such as advertising for specific products companies can influence customers needs and influence their customers to buy their products. Having a social media strategy is a smart more for companies especially with the way technology is advancing today.

A Social Media Consultant needs...

The most important qualities a social media coordinator needs to have is first off the mindset of promoting the company is a positive way. Essentially a social media coordinator is a representation of a specific company. Another important quality for a social media coordinator to have is correct and proper grammar. This might sound like a silly thing to list, but big name companies can not afford to loose respect and credit because someone doesn’t know proper grammar. They also will need to be able to multitask. Posting different things on different platforms can get tricky. Lastly being having a influential presence on social media is a big quality to have. Most companies use social media as a way of advertisement, so by being influential the company will gain more customers

The first checkpoint

So far I think that my regular social media cold use some cleaning up. So, I plan to go back through and delete all the not so professional tweets. I also think that for the future I will make sure that my tweets remain professional. We are only in week for of this BIS and already having this professional account and learning so much about my social media presence has changed me. I realized that my previous tweets and Facebook posts have not been bad, but from now on I will be making sure that there is no cursing, or explicit content in any tweets that I create or retweet. This strategy will help me improve my professionalism on all social media. I was never bad at this, but just as an extra precaution before I post I will from now on double check. In the future I want to make sure that nothing I post or reblog is offensive to anyone. Everyone has a different background, so it may be easy to offend someone and that is the last thing I ever want to do. Overall from now on I will be more cautious about what I put on social media.

Internet business models influencing the surveillance of data - Maciej Ceglowski

Internet business models influence the surveillance of data because as Maciej Ceglowski says “the internet does not forget.” I agree with this statement, there are a lot of  big data surveillance places are meant to store all types of data. Computers are supposed to log everything and not forget things, but some of this data could include websites visited, at the specific time and date. Computers were invented to make things easy for us, by collecting data and collecting algorithms. Most internet business models are used for merchant use. Since the merchants want you to buy their products they want to surveillance what you are looking at, and what you would be interested in buying. All that information is being recorded, then later while still on the internet advertisements pop up, advertising stuff that you previously looked at. Data gathering is useful for merchants and manufacturers, but a nightmare for average people. The data gathering can even find information like gender, age and birthday.  I think that this is crossing a line, while I’m using the internet I like to think that I am the only person looking at my screen, but I know that is unfortunately not true. Business models are surveillance and gathering data all the time on everybody who uses the internet, they are even tricking people by using click bate or using fake websites and apps that let them monitor things. Like Maciej Ceglowski said “if it’s my data then I should be the one able to access it, and I should be able to delete all of that data that was previously gathered.”

Big Data

Big data is a term describing the storage and analysis of large or complex data sets. After watching a lecture on Big data and watching a 60 minuets episode on Data brokers, I now realize that all the data I have ever shared with anyone has been stored in a big data system. It also has the potential to be sold to different people. Data brokers are working daily to collect as much information from different people, then they try to sell this information for a nice price. The statistic that really stood out to me from the video was “The company Aciom 1500 pieces of information on 200 million Americans.” Data brokers try and collect information about Americans that the person doesn’t know is being collected about them. Big data is such a powerful tool because someone can sell all of your information along with your name attached to anyone for any purpose. This is dangerous because nothing is secret anymore. There are big data lists created by data brokers of what people like, where they shop, or what they buy is all on record. This is an easy way for identity theft to happen. My personal opinion about limiting big data is to keep all of personal information private. I personally try to not share any information unless it is necessary. The only time I would recommend giving information out is filling out job applications online. Otherwise, turn the cookies off and clear history frequently. Phones and websites are always tracking what people are doing and when they are doing it, I think that this is unethical in many different ways. If I wanted to be treated or have someone random know my location, then I would sign up for it. Companies should not be allowed to go behind the scene and gather this information then sell it.

Hi Emily! I too agree that my phone is my “go to thing” especially when I am bored. I really appreciated louis C.K’s talk because he is so reluctant to give his kids a phone. I agree that people should say things In person rather than text. I agree that it is becoming normal to be on your phones at a restaurants. I think more people should start having more regular face to face conversations too. 

Louis C.K. vs. Sherry Turkle

Louis C.K. talks about why he does not want to give his kid a cell phone. He explains that we are too dependent on our cell phones and technology. It is our “go to” thing when we are bored or aren’t doing anything. A huge thing that Louis touches on is how kids today don’t know how to communicate outside of their phones. They say things over text that they may second guess and not say in person. 

Sherry Turkle used her research to explain her thoughts about technology and cell phones. She also talks about how social media is taking away from actual human interaction. Even though these are easy and convenient ways to communicate, it is holding us back from reality. Technology is becoming a habit rather than a privilege. 

Both speakers’ viewpoints touched on very relevant and interesting points. They both agreed that our dependence on technology is out of hand. We now depend on our phones being there at all times. We resort to looking at our phones in lines, restaurants, or any public areas. It is becoming more difficult to converse with some people because they don’t know how to be social because of technology. I know for a fact I am on my phone way too much, but for the record I do know that I can have a conversation with someone and it be completely normal.

I totally agree that it is super important in a business setting that there should be no interruptions, especially regarding cell phones. during the interview process if your phone rings that is a make it or break it point. Its better to leave your phone in the car.

Both speakers did have a very interesting outlook on the use of cell phones. This was one of my favorite tops to talk about. I agree with what you said what you stated the easy access to phones is not beneficial for society. Overall great response.  

Comparison of Louis C.K. and Sherry Turkle

Louis C.K. talked about phones creating a lack of being comfortable doing nothing. People are gaining a dependence of needing something to do when they are alone or their environment is silent.  

Sherry Turkle describes that there are bad implications from the ease of social media. The easy access to phones and the need for connection to technology is not beneficial to society. Social media is taking away from the connection between humans. Social media created a need for a constant connection to others through cell phones. 

Both speakers had very similar viewpoints. They agreed that there is a newly created dependance on social media and cell phones. The need created by social media is having a constant connection. People have lost their ability to be comfortable in silence and making small talk with those around them. “Boring bits” and the lack of comfortability of doing nothing are a common connection between the speakers. People do not have the dedicated focus during a conversation when they have their phones around them. It is hard to have a conversation with depth while someone is on their phone. It is important for business professionals to be aware of the interruptions cell phones and the internet can have in the workplace.

Louis C.K and Sherry Turkles response

Louis C.K starts the Conan talks about giving a cell phone to his children. He stated that cell phones are ruining the younger generation, people are being mean for no reason and its being a mess. I completely agree with this statement. Kids today are getting phones when they turn 9. I do not agree with that, I think that a kid should be able to have a cell phone when they are mature enough to handle it. I know that cyber bullies are such a serious thing at that middle to high school age. Louis C.K states that it is okay to be sad, and I think that is something everyone in today’s world struggles with. No one wants to be sad, so they turn to their phone to entertain them. People should know that it is alright to feel extremely and extremely happy, but phones are there to block out the feelings. 

On the other hand, Sherry Turkles video got a lot of controversy started. She thinks people are becoming alone together. I agree with her statement when she says, “We can always be herd, we can be wherever we want to be, and we never even have to leave home.” I think that with they way things are going people do not know how to be alone. I agree with video, I completely think that people need to put their phone down more and start to socialize in person more often. e This is not to say that people cannot use their phones at all. My motto is that everything is good in moderation. When people are refusing to put their phone down, especially in class like Sherry was talking about, that is when we recognize we have a problem. I hope that enough people realize that todays society does have a problem and we can all take a step back and try and fix this.

Overall Louis C.K and Sherry Turkles are making the same points, that everyone is always having their attention divided between the people we are physically with and the people we are mentally with.
