Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) in Black River, NC, shot by Mac Stone

I’ve seen so many surprising things while slogging in the swamp. It’s what keeps me coming back. But, this quiet wildlife encounter was truly exceptional and one of my favorites. Explorer @peter_houlihan and I were rigging old growth cypress trees to study the canopy life on the Black River, NC when I saw slight movement at the base of a decaying trunk. It was a massive catfish! With all the surrounding water gone, it looked stuck. But then I looked closer and realized it was exactly where it wanted to be because it was guarding a large clutch of eggs at the base of its tail. If you zoom in, you can see the pink mass. It turns out that once females lay eggs, the male flathead catfish will often take over guarding them from predators, including from their own mother. This dedicated dad stayed with his progeny, delicately moving his tail so sediment wouldn’t smother them, even while all the water dried up around him making him vulnerable to predators. Once dusk approached, Peter and I went back to make this portrait. And just like that, my love and appreciation for the complex ecology of these ecosystems deepened even further.

An alien I've made for a friend's planet, his world building is amazing so I take it upon myself to draw aliens for it (with his permission)!

Now while this guy doesn't have a name yet (due to my friend not having named it yet) Its an alien akin to the seals of earth.

Ancestraly the whole clade has seven limbs with an extra limb in the middle, but this species (and its close relatives) has turned their middle limb into a manual sail.

They are around the size of a Leopard seal, though ever so slightly longer. These aliens are also the biggest extant species within their family.

Meet Ahmad Aldany

Ahmad Aldany is a disabled teenager living in Gaza. He was born into this world already a victim of the Israeli occupation, with lifelong health conditions impacting his bones from exposure in utero to gas from a phosphorus bomb fired in 2008.

Two years ago, Israel destroyed his home and displaced his family, forcing them, like so many other Palestinians, into a life of instability--moving from place to place in search of safety.

He witnessed horrific scenes no child should ever see: destruction, and constant fear. Ahmed wakes up at night to the sound of explosions and screams at the top of his voice because he is afraid.

The healthcare infrastructure was decimated, leaving him unable to receive the treatment he needs for his disability.

Now, the famine has become so severe that he goes long days without eating.

A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"

"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.

"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

every trans woman, no matter how dominant or sadistic or brave or stone, has a self that, if you make her feel both safe and desired enough to be so vulnerable as to become that self, melts at your touch and cries in your arms and holds you like you're the most important thing in the world and if you receive such blatant and raw trust from a woman in your life you better treasure it like an oceanbound castaway stumbling upon a freshly dead turtle and if you hurt her in this state you deserve to have every droplet of joy and value you see in your life drained from you by the hot and vengeful sun.
