Upright vacuums represent almost half of the US vacuum cleaner market. And they are best for deep carpet cleaning, based on our testing. However, they are generally less reliable between studs, drums, and vacuum cleaners.

Only one of the posts in our ratings, Soniclean, gets an excellent rating for predicted reliability, although both Sebo and Shark get a very good rating. (We have tested the Soniclean and Sebo studs in the past, but there are no current models in our latest vertical ratings.) There are over a dozen shark studs in our reviews, and you'll find the best grouped together in the top 10 make our recommended list.

Three vertical brands - Sebo, Shark, and Miele - deserve an excellent rating for owner satisfaction, but Miele only gets a mediocre rating for its reliability. However, that's strong enough for Miele to maintain the recommended suitability. In fact, a Miele pocket model is on our top pick list. Other models to consider are Dyson, Kenmore, and Kirby, although Kirby gets a reasonable satisfaction rating.

Of the 12 vertical brands that are not eligible for a recommendation due to Fair or Poor's predicted reliability, six receive the lowest Poor rating (Hoover, Panasonic, Bissell, Electrolux, Dirt Devil, and Eureka), and six receive a Fair ( Fuller) Brush, Maytag, Riccar, Simplicity, Oreck and Black + Decker). Of these dozens of brands, three - Black + Decker, Dirt Devil, and Eureka - also receive low ratings for owner satisfaction.

The Turbo 1701 model of the Bissell Powerforce Helix Bagless Upright Vacuum is slightly more expensive than the 1700 model. Still, it's still an absolute bargain! The features offered are the same as with the 1700, but with the added addition of a TurboBrush® tool (shown below). This tool includes an air-powered mini brush roller, which provides additional versatility for upholstery cleaning and is easy to store in the machine. It also has a 2 "wider cleaning pad and a slightly longer cord and a much longer hose connection. We have reviewed over 300 user reviews of this cleaner on the manufacturer's website. The vast majority of these reviews are very positive and the void gets a very high overall score. This model has been around since early 2016 and positive reviews continue to come in (we originally wrote this review in mid-2016 and recently updated this post after a follow-up on the Bissell website).
