Slowly but steadily making progress on this Terrible Terror. I'm pretty happy with what I have so far, though I'm dreading trying to draw the talons and the mouth... why do they have to be so tricky?? The wings are also a little iffy -- I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the angle of the bent wing.
In general, I'm feeling a little conflicted about things. This drawing isn't super enjoyable, and I know on a logical level that's because it's difficult. I'm teaching myself to draw dragons, so it's going to take effort, which is what's making it less enjoyable. I know I need to continue practicing, because that's the only way I'm going to improve and get enjoyment out of this. But at the same time I want to work on something more abstract with some pretty colors.
I'm definitely going to finish this dragon, but maybe I'll work on something a little different next week as well. We'll see!

I started on a new dragon this week! (Still a Terrible Terror, though). I got the shapes from an image again, as I'm still not confident in my ability to do it without a reference. So far, it's going pretty well! I'm going to start on the lineart soon.
Ooh, also, I figured out the fancy shading spheres! Take a look!
I still don't quite understand how to apply this principle to shading and coloring things other than spheres, but I'm sure I'll get there eventually. Still, progress!
That's all for now! (The week has been pretty uneventful). See you next week!

First of all, the Terrible Terror is done! His name is Pinkalicious and he is amazing. He's going to be my model as I continue to figure out how to draw, so there's a very high chance he's gonna get some actual lore in the process. However, Pinkalicious wasn't the only thing I worked on, as you can see below...
All of these are part of my quest to unlock the secrets of shading and blending! When it comes to traditional art, I am most definitely a colors girl, so it's been driving me a liiiittle crazy that I can't figure it out yet. So I decided to give it a shot this week! Be warned, it's kind of a longish story.
The first two images are my attempts to crack the secret of the mystic shading demonstration orbs. Everywhere seems to be using these circles as a guide for how to do shading and picking your colors, yet mine are not cooperating. Even though I think I'm following the instructions when it comes to colors, as you can see in the one on the left.
So that made me wonder if I'm just using the wrong brushes, because I have no idea how to find the right brushes. I did some more searching, found a list of recommended brushes on Pinterest, and tried again! Still, no luck. colors work out nicely, but blending is a disaster.
BUT I might know why! ibisPaint has a "blue" tool, which I just naturally assumed was for blending, so that's what I've been using. But as I think about it, blurring and blending aren't the same. So I'm wondering if I'm just suppose to use regular brushes to blend... I only realized this last night so I couldn't mess around with it before this post, but there will certainly be experiments next week! (The only question is, if I'm just using a regular brush, what color do I make it???)
Anyways, sorry for the long story about me doing blending wrong. I think. If you're an experienced artist and you know the answer to my conundrum, advice would be appreciated!!
That's all for this week! Next week will be part 2 of the secrets of the shading orbs and maybe another dragon if I figure out the colors fast enough.

Behold! Finished lineart and a partially-colored Terrible Terror! (Also idk why they're so small next to each other, Tumblr won't let me make them bigger)
Yet again, I am stuck by how much better things look when viewing them from afar. I'm pretty proud of the head and spines, and even though the claws are still bugging me I've left them alone for now. (Partly because I couldn't figure out how to fix them).
I couldn't find a good green that looked like the Terrible Terror I was referencing, so I went in a totally different direction and made it pink instead. That way I don't have to stress over making the colors match!
I've also decided that I'm not going to bother with shading for right now. All of the guides I've found seem pretty complicated (what the hell is a multiply layer??) and I want to focus on just getting the basics down. I played around a little with blending, but that's about all I plan to do.
Next week will hopefully feature a finished Terrible Terror, and the start of another dragon. I haven't decided if I'm going to do a different species, or stick with Terrible Terrors. (If you have thoughts, please let me know!)
That's all for this week!
