Learning the right techniques on how to use clay and pottery. I wanted to play around with the material to see if it was strong enough to hold a candle.

Final Product & Relational mapping
Refined my prototype and it concluded to this. A simple and unique design, with the burning of sage or incense.. This prototype is intended to perform in a way to comfort those who sit alone or walk alone in the park. The challenging aspect of this project was definitely choosing the correct materials to use as I could’ve chosen concrete or even glass, but overall, I did choose clay in the end as it gives an authentic and natural look. The metal wiring was another challenging aspect that I had to look at, it was a hard material to mould and form into the right shape for the model.
My relational map is a bit more creative as it shows how light and darkness responds to my prototype. It conveys the message and feeling on how you can feel when walking/sitting alone in Albert Park, hence the one person on the right of the map - in comparison of the other side of the page.

Testing out scents that relieve stress and anxiety or scents that bring me a sense of comfort.
This prototype is directed to me and other ppl who sometimes have to walk alone at the evening or night. This prototype is made to bring you a sense of warmth and comfort through smell and light. I decided to test out the scents of burning dried sage and dried orange peels. Sage was the best one I’ve tried so far. Made me feel relaxed and gave me a almost like a ‘slow down’ sensation.

Prototype development - My last development for my concept
Here’s me combining all my ideas into one design. I just went all out and wanted to see the outcome. My final will be something like the sketch but will be a lot more refined and will tone things down. I will make the concept more intentional and specific. Above, the concept has elements of scent, light, shadows, warmth. My final will be more intentional towards light and scent.
Below was me sitting with a porcelain dome that had a candle inside. I put my hands over it and it gave me warmth to my hands. I also turned the lights off to feel how it’s like when holding ‘warmth & presence’.

Rapid Prototype - Refining
Here’s a few makings of my idea. I used toothpicks and wire to kind of practice and experiment on different materials. I tried to figure out what material I want to work on and am leaning towards the wire and metals. I still, want to make it handmade tho as it was a fun and cool process using the tools to bend and mould. The material also dictates how well it holds the candle.
The most challenging part of this process was trying to perfect these little corners and details with my fat fingers. Definitely took so long for each prototype since PVA glue took way too long to dry.

Rapid Prototype - Nearly there!
Here’s a cool prototype I developed from my other ideas. After sitting and thinking of an idea for what I should really stick with, I decided to origami some paper boxes to create a base for my candle that gives out warmth. The boxes are basically a cushion for my scents that I will be experimenting on later. The scents are heated up by the candle to produce a warm, cozy and nostalgic feeling. This is purposely designed to give the user (me) a feeling of warmth and familiarity as I am planning to create a scent using herbs or natural ingredients to make a smell of comfort.
As you can see, I played with a feather because I kept exploring different ideas… A friend and I actually had sooo many ideas that we went way too fast and out cameras couldn’t keep up, so we didn’t manage to document the other ideas. The feather idea was something I wanted to look at. So basically we wondered if the candle/heat was strong enough to lift the feather up. Didn’t work tho.
The sketch above also showcases two different types of designs, but with the same concept.

Rapid Prototype - Playing with lighting and smell
Using the two glass domes which is plant pots to capture the smell of the vanilla scented candle. I’m developing this and testing the smells since my final prototype will be a cushion for scent.
We also lit up candles while we were studying as I wanted to experiment whether or not warmth would bring a natural comfort or a feeling of ‘artificial human presence.’ I still want my final prototype to be comforting and give relieve any tension when walking in the park , as it should be a relaxed and simple experience.

Rapid Prototype - Playing with light and shadows.
The shadows of the ‘paper people’ give off an artificial people presence.
I wanted to explore how the paper will respond to the light coming from the candle, and whether or not I wanted to develop this idea or just leave it as an exploration.

Tuesday 3 May - 9pm
Today I decided to check out Albert Park at night! As I develop and decide further on with my prototypes, I wanted to see if I could explore more first before I fully decide on what I want to work on. Definitely is pretty interesting comparing my day time photos to these photos. Textures and colours are based around the lighting of the area!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look: Lighting is majorly driven by the light poles around the area.. the colours of the trees and park is influenced by that and only a bit of moon light.
Also saw a broken seat. Today there was a graduation ceremony, so usually people gather at Albert Park to take photos.. I think the seat broke because of the rowdiness of how many people gathered at the park. Not sure but it was interesting seeing a broken seat haha.
Smell: Albert Park smelt so bad at this time. Didn’t know where it came from.. I think it came from the dampness of the trees and fallen leaves due to the aftermath of the rain.
Hear: At night, the noise is usually really tuned out. That’s probably why lots of people love to take walks at night as it’s peaceful and chill. I could only hear the breeze and pretty quiet chirps that came from the birds. But all in all, it was really peaceful and there wasn’t much that stood out when it came to noise.
