Little Things I Love About Books

1: The feel of the pages when I start a new book.

2: Knowing that there are more stories left to be read.

3: Watching how they build up to become book collections.

4: How their varying sizes can make you feel all kinds of different emotions.

5: How each reader interprets a story differently.

6: How sometimes it seems like an author is talking to you personally.

7: How the loneliest of people can find reprieve in books for even a moment in time.

8: How they can make us feel–cry, laugh, hate, love.

9: How they just take over the hours of lazy afternoons.

10: How the sun can be shining, or rain can be drowning the world, but a book holds your complete focus.

11: How nothing is impossible in a book.

12: Like Redbull, a good book gives you wings (too cheesy?)

13: They make the best impression on guests.

14: Seeing the look of wonder on a young/new reader’s face.

15: How they’re not limited only to people who can see, hear, or speak–books are universal and welcome everyone to their pages.

16: How battered books are a sign of how much they’re loved, rather than unloved.

17: How anything can be used as a bookmark. Us readers, we’re creative.

18: How it keeps the loneliness at bay while eating alone.

19: How they’re an acceptable drug for the mind.

20: How perfect they look together, even if they’re stacked haphazardly.

Mathematician. Leader. Heroine. Remembering Hidden Figure Katherine Johnson

Tonight, count the stars and remember a trailblazer. 

We’re saddened by the passing of celebrated #HiddenFigures mathematician Katherine Johnson. She passed away at 101 years old. 

An America hero, Johnson’s legacy of excellence broke down racial and social barriers while helping get our space agency off the ground.

Once a “human computer”, she famously calculated the flight trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space.

And when we began to use electronic computers for calculations, astronaut John Glenn said that he’d trust the computers only after Johnson personally checked the math.

As a girl, Katherine Johnson counted everything. As a mathematician, her calculations proved critical to our early successes in space travel.

With slide rules and pencils, Katherine Johnson’s brilliant mind helped launch our nation into space. No longer a Hidden Figure, her bravery and commitment to excellence leaves an eternal legacy for us all.

“We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics.” - Katherine Johnson 1918 -2020

recently I’ve been studying really hard for an upcoming exam and even though it’s a lot of work I’ve actually been really enjoying it?? I’m so grateful to have gotten to choose what I want to study and to be continuing my education out of desire and not external pressure. education is such a privilege, and freedom of choice in education is too. I hope anyone reading this has a moment like that this week as well :)

getting an early start with 2 straight hours of writing (exhausting!), a vegan croissant (delightful!) and some falling snow (distracting!)

living the dark academia life

messy handwriting and even messier notebooks, doodles of skulls with sunflowers dangling from their eyes

burning the corners of pages, an older look given to them, the smell of ancient given to your room

wearing the cheapest, largest brown sweaters and the most comfortable, softest cream skirts

classical music softly bouncing on each one of the walls in your room, a list of your favorite composers pinned to your wall

a black ring on your finger, your hands wrapped around a warm cup of tea

your eyes closing softly from spending too much time reading, a candle to keep you company

the wet tip of your finger, the turning of yet another page

soft brown on your eyelids, gloss on your lips

long studying session in the library, you’re curled up on your chair, seven academic books are sitting next to your side, three articles are waiting to be read

stains around the edges of your nails, your skin painted with ink

a book in your bag, a pen used as a bookmark to annotate everything that makes your hands shake

a leather belt around your waist, your old grandpa’s sweatshirt tucked in has not gone to waste

standing right in the centre of a museum, sketching the outline of a sculture, scribbling down everything there is to know about a painting – in this, your hands are still stained

letting the rain softly caress your hair, carrying an umbrella to match your velvet trousers

a smile on your face when writing an essay, a yawn from your mouth when you finally go to sleep – after your eyelids are closed, psychedelic, dark and soft dreams are reaching your mind
