I think it's funny that a lot of fanmade Vhaeraun stat blocks (like two of them, but it's strange that it happened twice) tend to make Vhaeraun a Two Phase Boss

If you Have a few hours to kill and want a new video essayist to watch I can recommend hazel enough. The first video I'm putting here is particularly poignant due to all the censorship stuff going on, but I like the second one a lot because it speaks to the kind of creative works I do

1) Very cute. I think he's supposed to be a Jade dragon, based on the scales on his legs and horns up on his head (/look at the bowl on his head)
2) I think they're realizing he's the only adult in the game that can pull off pumpkin pants. Genuinely stunning color pallet. Didn't butcher his hair this time !!!!
3) The weibo comments on this reveal hit 16,000 in like 6 hours.

I think the actual reason I don't mind the Homestuck animation is because I yearn for an age of secondary media to be popularized once again

what if your doppelgänger wasn’t evil it was just a person. what if your doppelgänger wasn’t trying to replace you it was just trying to learn to be a person and you were the best model it had. what if your doppelgänger looked at you with your eyes and said with your voice that it just wanted to be loved. what then.

Hey insane thought. You know how drow have infravision temperature sensing and all that. Yeah okay so do you think they have a kink about it and how do you think they'd exaggerate that in porn. Like being able to see your partners body temperature change under that kind of vision. Do you think that's a thing some of them are into.

One of the reasons I enjoy writing for motherhood within the drow is that there's a full decoupling of the idea of changing of the self to fit the role of motherhood within the culture of the drow. Those violent women do not stop being violent, scheming, and hedonistic just because they became mothers. If anything it adds to their insane schemes. And I unironically think that's really neat.

Though I will say. The tone this discussion has taken has made me realize that I think a lot of people who were into homestuck in the early years don't actually realize the staying power homestuck has had as a media. A lot of teenagers still read it as like. A right of passage.
Sincere Predictions for the homestuck animation
Okay joking aside about the vivziepop studios animating a homestuck pilot thing, my actual predictions for it are something akin to:
= I think the project itself is going to be kinda mid. Danganronpa 1 anime levels of mid. I don't actually think it's going to be atrocious, but I don't think it's going to be able to capture the like whole of homestuck. But I don't know if the point of it WILL be to capture the whole of homestuck. I think if they treat it like a lot of anime treat manga - Prioritizing the important points to platform what of the source material interests people, they can still create a really engaging product.
Note: To our knowledge, vivziepop isn't handling anything writing wise, just funding the project. The two directors for this project are Skye Henwood (Who DOES have experience directing Hazbin and Helluva) and Toby Fox (Who's writing chops and story direction I do generally respect, and I'm under the impression does genuinely care about homestuck)
= Good or bad, It's going to draw in a new wave of fans, especially from overseas. (Hazbin actually has a surprising number of oversea's fans, and a lot of them have a not inconsequential amount of sway. I wouldn't be surprised if some people in the JP/CN/KR community checked it out just because it's from the same studio)
= There's going to be a few scandals of peoples work being used uncredited (homestuck already has a small issue with this, and some people who have worked on music for the comic have expressed frustration about having not been reached out to to have their stuff be used in other projects)
. = I think the Voice Actings going to be exceptional. A Not Inconsequential amount of Voice Actors got their start IN doing homestuck fandubs, and I think dubbing culture has always been really important to the homestuck community. The voice acting community is something that's always been incredibly tight-laced.
= I think that it's going to get hiveswap more funding, inevitably.
= I think we might end up with more New Official Merch and event Collabs like the CA cafe collab
Overall, I'm willing to give the project a chance, but I'm keeping my hopes at about average here. I think homestuck, as a comic, has had a long enough staying power to justify kind of branching out like this, and I'm interested to see what impact it has on the sphere its in.

Enclave very clearly isn't a Szarkai, but I do want to thank the Szarkai lore for giving us perhaps the most cohesive look about what the goal is with most drow spies and what they tend to prioritize

Okay. So, Stick with me on this.
Originally. Lolth's main city wasn't supposed to be Menzoberranzan.
Instead, the focus city that she had in Demihuman Deities (The first big compilation of knowledge for the drow gods) was Guallidurth. Guallidurth is, by description, the city of temples. One of the major ways people show their devotion to lolth is by building up temples and shrines within the city. The more influence someone has, the bigger the temple. And so it's described as being littered by a bunch of temples and shrines, because the act of building the temple and showcasing your specific way of worship is in itself a show of power to the other houses.
By comparison, it's sort of implied that with Vhaeraun's temple (Vault of Cloaked Midnight) and Eilistraee's main temple (Promenade of the Dark Maiden), the temple is not just the main shrine used to worship the god, but the city itself.
Vault of Cloaked Midnight is said to take up half of a cavern, with the implication that a lot of the drow there live within the temple and it's surrounding area. It used to be a dwarven kingdom, but they took it over after it fell. It's further connected to three different settlements in the Forest of Mir (Holldaybim, Dallnothax, Iskasshyoll) two of which have decoy temples so that when Lolth's soldiers attack from Guallidurth, they go after the smaller temples rather than find the larger one.
Promenade of the Dark Maiden, on the other hand, is set up in a ruined city, and composed of four major caverns within the city. We have more about the caverns individual workings (There's different districts, one for living, one for praying, one acting as a medical den, and the forth as soldiers quarters and storehouses.) Now what's interesting about The Promenade is that it's entirely separated from Vhaeraun and Lolth's main cities - it's located up under waterdeep, while both Lolth and Vhaeruan's cities are in the south.
Anyway. I think a few things are interesting about this set up.
The first one I find interesting is that the way each "temple City" is set up exhibits what the gods themselves seem to value. Lolth doesn't have One Individual Temple. She has a city of temples, where the act of building the temples are made into a show of power. Meanwhile, with Vhaeraun and Eilistraee the temple seems to be the city itself. Like the temple isn't just the shrine that is used to center around the worship, it's the surrounding area that the drow live within in their day to day lives. I think that it's an interesting contrast in what the gods prioritize.
Secondarily, I think it's interesting that drow have this tendency to just ...? Come in and build up on top of abandoned and fallen places. This is something you see a lot when you start sniffing around drow cities. They're very resourceful like that.
Finally, I think it's interesting to see how much the Drizzt books actually influenced peoples perception of drow and where everything focused around them is centered. Originally, a lot of drow society seemed to be centered south of the Swordcoast, with (ignoring Kiaransalee, who is an outlier doing her own thing) Eilistraee being the north-most consequential city-temple.
Tumblr media
Granted. Eilistraee also has cities and settlements in the South as well, so she's not entirely excluded. But I think it's interesting to see how that focused has evolved over the years.
