About Thleleins

Thleleins are an important part of Mythictale. This post will dive into topics about them, from what they are to social behaviors and more.

Thleleins

Thleleins originate from Dreamtale. Hundreds of years ago, they used to be almost dragon-like in appearance: quadruped, standing several feet tall at the shoulder, covered in long wispy fur with huge, feathered wings and a circle of feathers placed on the tip of their long, prehensile tail. Thleleins were Guardians, protecting various aspects like magic and emotions, of which they could also be considered the source of (as their souls directly represented what they were the Guardian of).

In current-day, thleleins have changed drastically. Most have died out, and there are only two known remaining of the species. However, these two resemble something more like a hybrid: having skeleton-monster bodies, with large feathered wings, furred fox-like ears, fangs, and a long, furred, prehensile tail with the signature circle of feathers at the tip.

Though one may be tempted to think of Nightingale and Dragonfly as hybrids, they are still technically full-blooded thleleins.

Social Behavior

Thleleins are a naturally social species. They are happiest when in pairs or small groups, and are often discontented when solitary. They rely heavily on forming trust-based relationships, often appearing as overly dependent.

Thleleins prefer sticking with other members of their species. However, with the drastic fall in their population, many had adapted a way to bond properly with non-thleleins. If someone has proved themself to be trustworthy and becomes close enough to a thlelein, that thlelein will often start to instinctually recognize them as one of their own. This phenomena is often known as a species adoption.

Despite their social nature, it is often very difficult for somebody to find themself making friends with a thlelein. They can seem closed off and wary. Because of how dependent thleleins are on the people they bond with, they are very hesitant and cautious when it comes to forming relationships. A friendly thlelein may have a lot of acquaintances that can easily appear to be friendships; however, the thlelein likely will not see any of these as true bonds.

Thleleins often have a small group of about 2 to 9 people who they’ve formed the closest bonds with. These groups are called a Pack.

Packs

Packs are often made up of mates and/or found family members (heavily reliant on Found Family trope). In the past, a Pack could only have thleleins as members. In the current-day, they can have non-thleleins that have experienced the species adoption. Non-thleleins in a Pack receive a secondary name called a thlelosu. Thlelosus serve the purpose of further cementing somebody as an adopted thlelein.

Packs start out as simple friend groups (or more intimate relationships). Thleleins will instinctually recognize people as their Packmates, often after an activity commonly viewed as a bonding experience. Thleleins will usually inform their non-thlelein Packmates of their Pack bond, and if they accept it, the bond strengthens and is then something considered magical. Pack bonds allow members to be able to vaguely know what their Packmates are feeling. The bond can also alert members if a Packmate is in danger.

If a Pack bond is severed, nearly all members will face the repercussions, commonly in the form of a bout of depression. Thleleins feel this much more distinctly. Being separated from a Packmate for long periods of time also replicates these feelings.

It is very important to a thlelein for their Pack to be functional. Members having bad affinities with each other is commonly very distressing.

Thleleins typically only have one Pack. Cross-Pack bonds are considered unusual and can negatively impact a thlelein. (Case in point here: After the apple incident, Nightingale’s Pack is his Gang, and Dragonfly’s is the Stars. After they reform their bonds, they’re discontented with the split Packs.)

Thlelosus

Thlelosu is the word for a non-thlelein’s secondary ‘thlelein’ name.

As stated before, it’s given to a Packmate by a thlelein as a way to mark them as an adopted thlelein.

Thlelosus often follow a theme matching the name of the thlelein, however this isn’t always the case.

Thleleins always have names from things in nature; thlelosus always follow nature themes, even if they don’t match the specific theme of the thlelein’s name.

For example, the Bad Sanses all have bird thlelosus to match Nightingale. Bumblebee matches Dragonfly, but Hyacinth does not.

Typically, the thlelosu replaces their original name. This is most common, but it doesn’t always happen.
