Recommendations for future development
1) NORTHSHORE - To further enhance the visual impact of the installation to catch peoples attention and increase the immersion of the design, we could extend the netting so that it passes the middle bridge to the next pier and the coral section can take up the whole next pier beside it. This will facilitate more patrons and increase foot traffic in the area. Having a larger area i believe is more impactfull hence, positively meeting the requirement of Northshore’s Client brief.
2) OUTSIDE OF NORTHSHORE - This installation is quite large, if we were to break up the 2 main features, the climbing frame net and the inflatable textured coral we can put it in 2 hot spot areas such as Southbank and the gold coast. This will fit in perfectly as it is still close to the river/ocean and we can have more space to expand the installation, as an iteration alone it will still present the same message bringing awareness to Brisbane’s water ways and pollution. As the installation gains traction, we may even have it at more places. This can be a taster for tourists and locals alike to encourage them to visit Northshore for the full experience.

Reflection
My role and contribution in this project was very enriching and enjoyable, my team was very open minded and diverse in the sense that with all of us combined we had a large range of skill sets. I believe I learnt a lot more about project managing and the logistics to planning a project. In my group we all pitched in with the planning part of the project, where there was lots of brainstorming of ideas and sharing opinions. After we finalized our idea, we worked based on our skills, I was mainly in charge of all the research from finding similar projects, mood board/inspiration board prototyping and especially the budget. There was much research that went into the budget as the elements within our project was very particular. Doing the budget really open my eyes in to how much detail and nitty gritty pieces that needed to be consider. The budget was a integral part of the assignment as I had to find what resources, equipment and materials were needed to bring this piece alive. As I worked through the budget, we had to make little changes so that everything would align with each other’s work and the design as well as making sure there was nothing missing. For example, as part of the risk assessment we stated that there would be signs scattered around the installation with safety information. I needed to communicate with my group member to make sure it was in the budget. This assignment felt very genuine and real, communication was an integral part of the assignment. I do feel like my communication and organizational skills has immensely increased as we had to keep on top of what everyone was doing and making sure everyones part aligned and was not repetitive against each others. In addition, the right elements were included into the budget. As this assignment was so large and there were many parts split up, I have further developed my time management skills, important as we needed to set due dates for when each part would be completed. I believe I have gained a deeper understanding of project planning and the process to it, I am positive these skills developed and new experience into how to work collaboratively with a range of skills to the best of our advantage will be used again not only in other assignments but also in the work place. Finally, My group was very experienced in pitching, I learnt a lot from them and admired their work ethic. The pitch was a collaborative effort however, I was mainly in charge of writing the base of pitch. Then my group would go in and tweak parts so that everyone was happy with it. As a fashion major, I have not done many pitches, so this was a very big learning opportunity for me, I learnt how to plan, pitch professionally to an audience and the expectations and process that is put into it. I know I will use these skills again in the future as I enter the workforce and need to pitch ideas to other workers.

Strengths and Improvements
- The biggest strength of our design is the way we communicated our message of sustainability and brining public awareness to educate the patrons on pollution affecting our waterways especially our river. There is something there for everyone. The large water bottle feature will definitely capture people’s attention. You can interact with the installation in many ways, everywhere you look you will be reminded of the ocean.   - Our project will create positive impact on Northshores brand as it is both interactive, visually appealing and the message being shared is current - I was able to identify the areas of improvement through systems thinking and systems mapping where by I mapped all the components within our design which ultimately created the whole design. This emphasized the understanding of problems, Prior to “making reliable inferences about behaviour” you must be “developing an increasingly deep understanding of underlying structure” (Arnold and Wade, 2015, pg.672) – the factors that make up the complex system problem before. This is where we identified for improvement it would have been good to include community engagement, for the community to donate their used plastic water bottle this would create a stronger relationship between the people and place as they know they helped create the installation.

Final Inspo board
Here we have included the Rio De Janeiro water bottle fish – case study above – and the NET installation by Numen for use – case study above. We also included a tunnel figure on the left side, this is a tunnel entirely made of plastic straws which blow in the wind. We also included art installations that use coral, from foam coral, knitted coral and blow up installations. These all helped in the develop of our design and enables us and other viewers to compose a real-life picture of our project, it validates our design and shortens the learning process. Our Project Prototype
Here are images of our final design, this communicates our vision and the main design elements of our creative project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are 3 parts to this assignment – we have a large feature water bottle wave with a net climbing frame that mimics the ups and downs of a wave, next to it we have a colourful texture display of Australia native coral and marine life on an inflatable bed and lastly a gardened seating area that overlooks the river and has views of the Brisbane city. On top of that we have created a QR code that can be scanned where patrons are taken to the website and can answer prompted questions to share stories their have had on the river, what the river means to them, and a range of tips and tricks to reducing plastic usage and waste – Billboard are situated on site with further information and regarding the river recovery program. It covers the pillar of well-being as it brings a relaxing environment for visitors disconnect from their regular day whilst educating viewers. As you can see “Splash into Northshore” has undergone many different drafts and overcome problems. It has totally changed from its initial design with a much deeper message impact on the river, awareness and pollution. The final design was $57, 451 and stands at 13x30m.

Normative frame work: Diversity & Sustainbility
We actively presented forward a Normative claim as we place the idea of sustainability in a actionable state (Grey, 2019) by educating our viewers on why they should help the river, what comes out of it? As well as physically showing the values underpinning why we should clean up the river such as the beautiful coral and be sustainable and why you should do it by including viable information and statistics on the billboards and site. In addition, the QR codes allow people to share stories and tips. When we talk about diversity as an ethical principle we are talking about equality and inclusion (Gray, 2019) Our project aims to bring people together from a range of backgrounds, socio economic status, genders and all walks of life, we foster diversity through the range of enriching, educational and cultural activities, from the gardened area, advanced technological elements such as QR code sharing, wave netting frame and coral blow up design. We have something for everyone. Seitha Low states that “The social interaction of diverse groups can be maintained and enhanced by providing safe, spatially adequate territories for everyone within the larger space of the overall site," (Low, Taplin, scheld, 2009) For example this is especially important in ours as we want people to feel safe in our space, having a gardened area where people have the opportunity to talk to each other and kids can play together in the interactive frames was important. We attract a diverse range of audiences engaging with the site, which in turn will also improve the diversity of people visiting the surrounds of Northshore. Our project has a large educational element, this will help nurture diversity as “people want to learn, and when they come together to share the experience of knowledge, social divisions often dissolve” (Knapp, 2007, para 9) Diversity is set around the inclusion of people, although the climbing net frame is not made to suit wheelchairs, however, we did include a ramp up to the coral and netting frame below the recycled water bottle wave. They are still able to access every part of the installation, immerse their self in the atmosphere and experience the refracted light under the wave and touch the netting and coral.   "Sustainable development calls for concerted efforts towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and planet. " – United Nations Our project is driven by the aspect of sustainability, creatively we have designed engaging places that will help educate and shape a more sustainable future. Not only in the information taught but also in the construct. As a “light touch” strategy we repurposed an existing landscape feature, the unused dock and based our design on the space. In addition, recycled materials such as the water bottles, wet pour rubber grounds, wooden pillars and repurposed plastic perspex windows added to the sustainable aspect. Through out our project development we wanted to use as many recycled materials as possibly to reiterate the message being presented. Hence why, we also later added a recycled wooden shoes rack, recycled wooden seating chairs to recycled wooden pillar for anchoring the net to holding in the tension metal wires for fencing.

Plants for Gardened Area
The garden area, I had to research some plants that would be suitable for this area. We wanted plants that were not too big, could survive in conditions such as wind, lots of sunlight and partial sunlight, heat and not much watering and low maintenance. Here are some plants that were short listed

Week 10 - Practice Pitch
In tutorial we prepared a mini pitch proposal to present to our peers and tutor for feedback to refine our idea. The 3 main points that people brought up was - The back part of the pier that we did not use looked out of place and too plain - Brought up Safety issues we should consider, some of them we had thought of. - People were questioning how the wave going to stand up and how it would look, they could not picture it even after we made our sketch up draft document. This was the design prior to further development from the peer reviews
Tumblr media
After this we re-grouped to refine, clean up, extend the design, clearly defining the logistics of the wave structure and further research into examples. The digital protype allowed us to visually communicate our idea. This enabled us and our peers to easily identify issues for places to improve.

Water bottle Fish sculpture
During the week 10 pitch test people were questioning the safety and viability of the water bottle waves. They did not understand how the sculpture would, look and how it would hold up. Here is a sculpture that is very similar to ours in the sense that it is reminding viewers about sustainability and is made of the same materials as ours. In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on Botafogo beach a large outdoor sculpture of 3 fishes made of discarded water bottles and lit from the inside out with coloured lights was created for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development. This sculpture was made for the Rio+20 Conference where NGOs, private sectors, world leaders, government personnel and other groups came together to discuss how protect the environment on our crowded planet and reduce poverty, advance social equity. There is a slogan beside the sculpture reading “recycle your attitude” This was made in the aim to remind viewers to recycle and look after our plant. The sculpture glistens in the sun during the day as it refracts the sunlight and lights up with blue and red LED lights at night. The light blue tint of the water bottles together gives the sculpture colour which we want in our design as well. As stated it will glimmer in the sun this is similar to ours as we use the arch to create refracted light through the water bottles reflecting onto the netted rope installation below which simulates the sensation of being underwater as the light refracts and glimmers.

Week 9 - 10
we finalized our idea, relocating onto the old pier in site 2 and incorporating a range of cutting-edge play & art installations. However now we had to develop our idea to establish a connection between the project and the site. We gain a sense of 'place' when both the physical and social characteristics of a location are meaningfully linked – Grey, 2019 As we took a place based, asset-based approach to our project, we worked upon the significance of the unique qualities of the site such as the pier and the river. It felt like placemaking just fit right into our project as we were bringing awareness to the pollution in the Brisbane river. Place making is a “long-term, partnership-based strategy that results from a commitment to social equity and a meaningful life for its residents as well as an interesting experience for visitors and a stronger economic base for the area.” (Borrup, 2016) To emphasise the connection between place and identity, we highlighted the river and ocean coral by creating the coral installation, climbing frame with recycled bottle feature will appeal to visitors, any day of the week, accompanied with information on these, satisfying the client brief. This was done because creative place making can “strengthen economic development, encourage civic engagement, build resiliency, and/or contribute to quality of life” (Bennet, 2014, pg.78) Then Also adds further value through the community-based goals, engaging the near community with a nice relaxing area to disconnect from work, everyday life to come, relax and chill. We wanted our viewers to also connect and actively engage with the place to make meaning. Hence why the digital QR code was the perfect idea as you are able to submit questions that build on the overarching message on sustainability and pollution awareness in the waterways.

Numen for Use - Study
Tumblr media
(NET at Z33, 2011, Image by Numen for use)
Numen for use combines architecture and public art to create interactive site specific installations. We were particularly looking at NET Z33, this is a large high space that he transforms with layers of netting that are “transparent” By Arch daily, Numen describes it as “a design to reinvent the concept of a backyard and to recreate the sensation of flying.  The social concern behind NET is to create a public balcony – a transparent space, accessible to a population alienated by suburban living, reconnecting backyards to form community spaces.” This installation gives the patrons a sense of levitation, the clean walls around it and use of space and materials create a calming atmosphere. The installation enables and facilitates a space for viewers to disconnect from their busy lives and the buzz of technology. Exactly the same as what we want to achieved, a place for viewers to relax, enjoy, interact whilst educating viewers or/and brining awareness to issues.
Tumblr media
(NET at Z33, 2011, Image by Numen for use)
Looking at similar ideas is important for us in help revise a rough brief idea of how ours might work and we may be able to incorporate some of these findings in the development of our project. The first net is suspended to the ceiling then some are connected to the surrounding walls. Once the nets are up they are strung together to naturally create the “catenary curves”, the hills and bumps that create dimension. There are many safety laws to consider and legal regulations – around art they are more lenient and is more of a grey area

Developing our idea
It took us about 4 weeks to develop a solid idea that we were happy with. Based on the concerns and developments raised in weeks 6 and 7, we went through many drafts. The final product has immensely changed from the initial design.
In week 7 we were looking into making the project float above water and have an installation where users can walk in side a blow up tunnel without touching the water due to the hygiene issues. We also wanted lights, shapes to allow natural light to cast patterns on the walls. Here is an inspiration board created for research and idea building purposes.
Tumblr media
However, as we developed our idea further, looking at a rough budget, it would not be feasible, due to the budgeting limitations as we would need it custom made. To solve this problem we opted to downsize the design and have it more of a generic shape such as a cube, however, more concerns grew as we assessed the risks such as the strong river current, would the anchoring be strong enough? Would marine life swim into it? Etc…
We also looked at netting to go inside our blow up installation, and also considered moving the site onto the pier and create an interactive climbing frame. I wanted to play with light and textures. This was harder to develop as we struggled to make it incorporate elements of history and the river. As we delve deeper into the idea we found there was less limitations and decided to combine both blow up elements and netting together. Here is an inspiration board with images exploring these avenues.

Week 8 and 9
These 2 weeks we learnt how to use sketch up and video making softwares to present our final concept. By the end, our group collectively decided that using sketch up was a better digital prototype strategy, for our project. Based on our brief idea of what we had planned so far we thought it would be easier to highlight particular parts and present our idea across more smoothly and effectively since our project was quite large with many features.
We began by making draft digital prototypes, this got the ball rolling by building to think and stimulating our imagination. It helped us visualise the result and “verify and validate assumptions, calculations and decisions during the development, as well as answering two fundamental questions: “Will it work?” and “How well does it meet the customer needs?” (Elverum, Welo, Tronvol, 2016, p.118)

Week 7, Workshop 1
After last week’s tutorial, we further brainstormed new ideas to develop our project. We mainly focused on bringing in elements of history and the river, as such we really focused on wanting to make an inflatable floating installation that was shaped like the river enabling patrons to walk inside it without touching the water. In the workshop we completed a range of activities that would help in the development, for example, we listed ideas that would stimulate all the senses to give an immersive experience such as touch, smell, sight and sound. Brief brainstorming of idea – such as the shape, the lighting, how to make it interesting, what to include as history

Week 6: Forming Groups
We got to hear everyone’s project proposals and voted for ideas on padlet to shortlist the classes top projects. From then we all chose a project that was shortlisted that we wanted to work on. This was a great way to choose groups as I chose one that I was interested in rather than basing it on the people. This is the page we all put our strengths and skills up, as you can see we have a broad range of skills that can be used to our advantage. Everyone one in our group had a creatively driven mindset which was great in the development section
Tumblr media
This was the first workshop I got to work with my new group and to begin developing our ideas. The Initial idea was having a blowup water park on the river similar to the one pictured below, with a seating/spectating area and fake sand – we assessed the strengths and weaknesses to see what we wanted to further develop. A few concerns were brought to attention that we needed to overcome such as concerns on the hygiene of the river, other marine life that roam the river such as bull sharks and the budgeting of the whole idea.
