real interesting talk there, “Rize”.
tbh though, I wonder if the first OEK…
Tumblr media
…who, despite what Matsuri implied, was probably treated like shit by his family for being different + was feared because he was way stronger, isn’t the reason the Washuus/V are trying to be “more humans” in the first place (since it’s also what Arima told Kaneki in ch83):
hence what “Rize” said about pure ghoul blood being inferior to other people who had more “human” in them in this family
or what Kanou himself implied about the sunlit society researching about artificial hybrids through “evil” ghoulification experiments (that works for the Qs project being the result of all that later on, too)
In that aspect, I think maybe that’s why the Washuus were so fond of Arima, because of how strong he was even though he was a half human.
A hybrid of a human and ghoul is stronger, it doesn’t even matter if the baby turns out to be a half human (Arima) or a OEG (One Eyed Washuu), overall it’s apparently just better than being a pure ghoul.

OVERDWELLER:
“You don’t have to respond that way, I didn’t forget my promise, Yuuta-san,” Jay told him, removing their gas mask and dusting off the dust and debris that had fallen on them while they were navigating the tunnels. They really would have preferred to say ‘sama’ but something about the way he had spoken yesterday made them think that he wouldn’t appreciate the gesture.   “You know, even though I adjusted my map on the way back, it was hard to find this place again. I almost thought I dreamed it.” Jay took another look around, drinking it in all over again and giving a wistful sigh. “Even the wind barely touches this place. I feel like I crossed over the line into Paradise… even though that’s not how you feel.” They gave him an apologetic look and then swept back their dark hair, dropping onto their knees and taking off their backpack, rifling through. They set out the news as told by five different tabloids, a book on modern history and politics, and then finally a set of DVDs. Jay then removed their laptop from their bag, checking the charge briefly as they loaded it up. Still full, that was good.   “Of course, down this far, I won’t be able to show you what the internet is. It has a range, and we’re out of it. But these.” They tapped the DVD cases. “They have discs in, that the images are written onto, along with some sound. When I put them in here,” they tapped the disc drive, “We’ll be able to watch them.” The challenge had been to find DVDs that encompassed the modern world. Three of the DVDs were documentaries, illustrating the impact of the first and second world wars and finally one on the modern affairs and challenges facing Japan. Some of the contemporary attitude towards ghouls was well-illustrated well through this, they had thought. The other two DVDs were ‘Some Like it Hot’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’. Because what was life without entertainment?    “What do you want to look at first, Yuuta-san?”

‘ YOU WEAR SUCH STRANGE THINGS. He’d never seen anything like it before, the mask over their face, and as he was accustomed to, took it from their hands effortlessly. Tapped the glass visor... to protect the eyes? Then why the odd cylinder? Lips parted, about to ask, but Jay had already moved on to the next subject. The mask was left on the floor and he made his way over to where they pulled foreign objects from their bag.

‘ I told you, I cover up the openings... I’m not fond of guests. ’  He knew their wonder and their awe; he’d felt the same in the early days. The promise of change, even at the expense of sunlight, made the Underground seem idyllic. He cast his gaze out across the ruins, as he used to, and felt... nothing. No spark in his chest, no pride in his soul. It seemed that he was as barren as his dwellings.
Still, nothing would surprise him as much as that device did then. It birthed light, but looked like... a book? A book that birthed light? Eyes wide, Yuuta leaned over, hand outreached to touch the screen... Hard. Not like a book. But so bright. He barely heard what the other was saying, head grasping at words to string the sentence together, ‘ DVD. That’s a... movie... right? Is that correct? ’ Finger extended, he lightly tapped the disc tray with the tip of his talon, ‘ Show me the wars. I want to see the wars. ’ Not that he knew what that would entail, of course. With open palms, he ghosted over the boxes. The Overworld had greatly surpassed his own understanding. It felt hopeless to even try to understand their ways. The Japan that he had known had long since gone --- the world that he had known had long since gone.

‘ DIDN’T YOU PROMISE TO BRING ME SOMETHING? ’
Nothing had really changed ; offerings came in different packaging now. What had once been offerings of flesh and bone, was now relics of the modern world. Yuuta sat, perched in the usual spot, with the dirtied fabric of his yukata shrouding him into the darkness of the tunnels. Pitiful for a king ( even moreso when he waited like a dog for the least extravagant of items ) but there he remained, smiling, humble. A simple exchange: I’ll tell you stories of days gone by if you bring me items of new. Now a pariah of society, the strange ‘not-quite-ghoul-but-certainly-not-human’ being was the only link Yuuta had to a world bathed in sunlight. If all they wanted were his stories, which he had in abundance, then so be it,

        ‘ YOU. ’
He commanded with an air of confidence, accustomed to barking orders at the nearest living thing. The nearest living thing, on this occassion, stood at around 5′7″ with slicked-back blond hair. Yuuta could only imagine the tales this above-dweller had. Perhaps he’d indulge him. Perhaps he’d spin stories like silk, drape them over his mind’s eye and--- was that kohl over his eyes? And now that he looked closer, why was he pulling such a strange expression? Was that just his face? The Underground was akin to the underbelly of society; a welcoming host to all those who resented the world above, but this was too much, even for Yuuta.

HEADCANON : KAKUJA FORMATION
yuuta’s kakuja was formed of serpentine-like tendrils, each branching off into more tendrils, with hands. the hands were manifestations of him feeling pushed into position of the one-eyed king by the ghouls who fled with him to the underground. whilst yuuta was content with fighting the v organisation until they were all dead, the ghouls wanted a leader, who would one day bring them their salvation and more importantly, their freedom.
so he stepped up to the role, believing he was the only one capable ( drenched in the blood of his own kin, one eye crimson and the other, human ) and thus his resentment began to grow. he ruled his anger for decades, for the sake of the underground, but it started to manifest in his subconscious and thus, his kakuja. at first, it only took form in half-kakujas, rejected by his body as hand-like detachments, because he rejected the idea that he was ungrateful for his position...
... but the more comfortable yuuta became with the idea that he hated being king, and hated his fellow ghouls for forcing him to be one, the more prominent the hands became in his full kakuja.
