Just came across this. I'm more appalled when people dismiss others for expressing any sympathies to Israel. In fact, I recall a fanartist who, in reaction of a voice actor Rob Paulsen expressing sympathy for Israel and the hostages, denounced him as a Zionist and drew Donnie supporting Palestine.

When Jews or Israelis express their pain, if the reaction is to start making number-based comparisons, as if that resolves the entire question of "who do we get to feel for" (like we can't feel for innocents on both sides), it's just self-exposing people as lacking any real human empathy, or care about all human life.

It's as if you told someone you're hurting because your mom died, and their reaction would be, "Who cares? You should are more about your neighbor's pain, who just lost FIVE cousins. Not just one realtive, but FIVE! So that's the only thing we should all care about, yourself included!"

That is NOT a normal reaction, it IS devoid of empathy and basic human decency, and it IS mind boggling that this even has to be explained to people.

...Not to mention that if we really wanted to try and make the metaphor work in terms of context as well, then it would be like if you were being told that you should care more about your neighbor's pain over losing five cousins than about your own mom's death, when two of the cousins are known to be responsible for having murdered your mom, and it's very likely someone in that family is exaggerating about how many cousins have died, and that same relative also keeps promising that soon enough, they'd murder you, too.

Same with my OCs. I have differentt OCs, some are "strong female characters", some are "damsels", and some are both. Here are a few examples:

"DAMSELS/GIRLY GIRLS"

Rita Connway from Popugirls: She's a stereotypical girly girl: a pretty, blonde, fancy southern belle, who wears poofy dresses, skirts, and tutus, loves fairytales, magic, unicorns, puppies, and is a hopeless romantic. She's the "nice girl" everyone loves, makes friends easily, and likes giving people makeovers. She often finds herself needing to be saved. Sometimes by her female friends, but a lot of the time, by her strong, handsome, brave Australian boyfriend Jett.

Selma Seldom, Beatrice Park, Tammy Panganiban, Margaret Ruoho, and Grace Mayfair from Popugirls: Also girly girls

Marja-Liisa Lahti, Tiina Busters, and Zaiga from Aurora Borealis and Company: Marja-Liisa is the keyboardist of the Finnish girl band Aurora Borealis. She is the most feminine of the group. She loves pink, she's the shortest and thus looks "petite" and "weak", she's an Anglophile, and as a female Anglophile, she loves more "girly" British things like Jane Austen books, Romeo and Juliet, Alice in Wonderland, and has a crush on George Harrison. Tiina is a girly girl who loves fashion pink and purple. Zaiga is the more timid, sweet Afro-Latvian friend of the more brash, sometimes arrogant, and tomboyish Icelander Dagmar Laxness.

Marcella Piccolaro from my HEAD: In my head, I make up scenarios where I make characters that I pair up with real people. I never post them online. Anyway, Marcy is characterized in my AUs as an Italian immigrant to England who always ends up in a relationship with Keith, lead singer of the Yardbirds. Often in these AUs, Marcy is a damsel in distress that Keith needs to rescue.

FEMME FATALES:

Marina "The Duchess" Tang from Carmen Sandiego: My Carmen Sandiego OC (for both the Netflix version and the Earth version, my AUs tend to blend the two together). She's a Singaporean woman who goes by the alias "The Duchess". She doesn't work for Carmen, nor VILE, nor Zack and Ivy, she only works for whatever or whoever benefits her, so she's morally grey. She often uses her looks on men to get what she wants.

Eugenia "Gia" Lombardi from Aurora Borealis and Company: Gia is a friend of AB. She's a fashionable woman from Rome, who also is known for being boy crazy, and flirting with almost every man she sees.

BOTH/NEUTRAL

Lorelai Birdgess from DuckTales: My OC for the 2017 reboot of DT (and ultimately a Disney general character): An Aboriginal female duck from Sydney, Australia, also known by her self-given nickname/alter ego Cavern Girl. She wears whatever she wants. She joins the McDuck team on their adventures, but I made her eventually be a Disney character in general. She's brave and strong, based on the "Crocodile Dundee" stereotype, so she's not glamorous or dainty and is willing to get her hands dirty. But she also has feminine aspects to her. She still wears dresses and skirts, she still at times needs to be saved, most notably from Glomgold, who often makes advances on her, the duck mafia, and even from a forced marriage when the gang get sent back to Ancient Greece. She also is in love with Scrooge, and is a dude magnet.

Patricia Hannington from Popugirls: Born in Manchester, England, Patricia wasn't like everyone else. She grew up and got into the punk rock scene. She and her childhood friend Vicky Rajan, later joined by Courtenay Topaz, formed a band called Chains of Fury. Patricia went by the stage name "Celeste Diamond" and started dating another punk guy named Amos. Patricia/Celeste thought her life was perfect, but she caught Amos cheating on her one day and they split. She continued her band, and started dating Tino, a Finnish man, who treated her way better. She later became a friend of the oher Popugirls, dropped the Celeste Diamond name, and recently the Welsh-born Yvonne Low joined COF. Patty is the most tomboyish, but she's also popular with the guys (she herself said she had a reputation among the punk men back in Manchester), and is willing to wear a dress and get more "fancy" at times.

Kill the mentality that a girl who cooks or cleans willingly is a "housewife". Cleaning and cooking are necessary, mandatory skills in real life. Both men and women do it. That's part of LIVING. Get fucking real fakeminists. Kill the mentality that a girl who needs a man to help her is just a "damsel in distress". Kill the mentality that being under a spell, transformed, hypnotized (unless hypnotized into putting herself in danger), or being a maid who is forced to do work count as "damsel situations". Damsels in distress have to actually be harmed or in a situation where harm is likely (so kidnapped, r*ped, attacked ny a monster or animal, forced marriage, abused by a VIOLENT family, lost in a dangerous place, put in a death trap i.e. sawmill, train, car, bomb traps) to count.

Examples of damsels:

Princess Peach: Kidnapped, forced marriage

Snow White: Chased by the queen, direct attempts on her life made by her by said queen

Daphne Blake (sometimes, she didn't get into actual danger in the original show, she was usually just clumsy and had bad luck, falling through trap doors into basements. Later shows actually solidified the getting kidnapped or locked consistently)

so if people didn't hear what happened in calgary, essentially:

what is not visible in this photo is the pro-palestine protestors he was standing with. in the videos that circulated, you can see a blonde woman in a keffiyeh walk up to him, say something, and then walk away. there are people with keffiyehs and pro-palestine signs all around him.

they are the people who concern me the most. they claim to be pro palestine, pro justice and peace and equality. a man, standing in their protest, did a nazi salute, and none of them stopped him.

i'm a jew and the descendant of holocaust survivors and victims. if someone did a nazi salute in my vicinity and it was safe to do so, i would go bat shit on them.

so why did no one stop him?

i feel like is is emblematic of how antisemitism spreads among pro-palestine leftists. they don't set out to be antisemitic. they don't want to be antisemitic because its wrong to be prejudiced. but the antisemitism begins to slip through the cracks. they usually don't know enough about jewish people, jewish history, or antisemitism in general to counter it. the effect is slow, but damning. eventually these antisemitic symbols lose their meaning, become less important. so even in the face of something this overt, people don't stop it.

all i can say is that its truly disgusting that people turned the very real, longstanding oppression of palestinians by the israeli state into an excuse to spread violent, hateful, and harmful rhetoric at the expense of jewish people around the world.

and i would also like to say: my grandmother grew up in communist poland, raised by a holocaust survivor mother who had lost her own mother and sisters, likely to the nazi death squads east of Poland, the Einsatzgruppen, as they were trying to flee. Her father may have never met her, having died in the polish people's army around the same time she was born. all her life she wanted to come to canada, because it was safe and bountiful. she brought her family here, and i've always felt lucky for it. now we have people throwing up nazi salutes in our streets to celebrate the attempted bombing of our family members.
