+heroes of nusantara: cut nyak dhien
Tumblr media
Cut Nyak Dhien (1848-1908) is a guerilla war leader during the Aceh War against the Dutch colonial government. She led the war for 25 years following the death of her husband, Teuku Umar. The Sultan of Aceh is her ancestor through her father. She hailed from an aristocratic family, and was renowned for her beauty and knowledge. Many men proposed to her, but her parents arranged a marriage to Teuku Cek Ibrahim Lamnga in 1862.
On March 1873, the Dutch declared war on Aceh. This would be known as the Aceh War, a 30 years full of battles that exhausted the colonial government’s wallet. The First Aceh Expedition was won by the Acehnese forces who were aided by Italy and United Kingdom. The Second Expedition was won by the Dutch, where they were able to capture the palace. Teuku Ibrahim Lamnga died in a battle to defend their hometown on June 1878. Cut Nyak Dhien swore a revenge upon hearing his death.

Two years after being widowed, Cut Nyak Dhien married another guerrilla hero who was also her cousin, Teuku Umar. The couple had a daughter named Cut Gambang. Together they led the guerrilla war, using traps and ambushes tactics. In 1883, a peace treaty was signed, and Umar joined forces with the Dutch to stop the guerrilla war. His rank in the colonial army rose until eventually he was trusted to command an army. On March 1896 he deserted, taking the army, money and equipment with him to aid the Acehnese.
In 1899, Teuku Umar was killed in a surprise attack. When their daughter heard of his death and cried, it is reported that Cut Nyak Dhien slapped her and said that Acehnese women musn’t cry over the ones fallen in battle. She led the war forces herself until her health and sight began to worsen. Nevertheless, she refused to surrender although she knew her forces were outnumbered by the Dutch, who was by then had begun to adapt their strategy according to Aceh landscape.
The dwindling number of her army, lack of supply and failing health led to its destruction in 1901. Cut Gambang survived and escaped while Cut Nyak Dhien herself was captured. She was first held in Banda Aceh, but later moved to Sumedang in Java to avoid her influence spreading among the Acehnese.

It is said in Sumedang she never revealed her actual identity. The exiled war leader spent her time teaching religions to people of Sumedang until her death in 1908.
The Acehnese Government found her tomb in Sumedang in 1960. Four years later, she was post-humously awarded the title of National Hero by Soekarno. The movie Tjoet Nya Dhien, directed by Eros Djarot, won the award of best international film at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.

Menunggu Abang Gojek, yg susah karena hujan.
Begitu datang, langsung kupakai helmnya.
Kita menuju kampusku
Secara tiba-tiba....
Mobil merah, melaju kencang sekali
SIAL!
Rok, sepatu, kaos kakiku basah kuyup.
Tuk Pak bermobil...
Apasalahku...?
