English Kitchen Garden Plum Tree Pruning

Did you know that most trees have major surgery pruning only when they are dormant in the winter? Plum trees are one of the few exceptions. It's because they are susceptible to a disease called silver leaf, a fungus which can kill the tree. Chondrostereum purpureum gets into the newly cut wood particularly when it is wet. So, tree surgeons say prune your plum after it's fruited and pick a dry period.

Dry? Oh yeah- our area of Hampshire has been the driest spring and summer for over two hundred years. Weirdly, rain storms go east and west of us, but never stop to drop any here. Due to the broken branches caused by the weight of this year's crop of plums, we decided to re-shape the twenty-two year old tree by cutting back three of the main branches.

Because we are sustainable gardeners, we "harvest" the wood, to be seasoned for a couple of years and then burnt in our open log fire. The leafy bits are tossed over our fence to feed the thirteen bullocks in our field- they LOVE browsing on something different from grass. The cattle are delighted; the farmer is happy about it, We checked.

It's a lot of work...

The tree surgeon used a chain saw on the biggest branches cutting the dozen or so into pieces that would fit our log basket. I used loppers and a hand saw on the rest. The juicy new growth and leaves went over the fence. Nothing is wasted.

And I did harvest another twelve pounds of plums from the cut branch tips that were too high for me to reach on a ladder.

The tree is now in a much more stable shape, less likely to get blown down in winter gales. We will get a smaller crop of plums next year, but to be honest, we've had so many this year, I am not going to mind!

oh man ive had this in my wip folder forever but i’ve finally finished it! I really love the red string of fate belief and I can’t help but think that even if Stamford hadn’t been there on that bench that day, by some twist of fate John would sit down on that bench only to be disturbed by a strange man in a long coat talking animatedly to a skull about the decomposition rates of a human body or something, and (against his common sense) John would interrupt him because his medical facts stated are a little off and the rest would be history  (◡‿◡✿)

Trying to catch up on a few requests I’ve had sitting in my notes for a while now! I’m not usually all that big a Johnlocker, but this ended up being pretty fun. So, yay! Fun things! (Also, I stumbled upon the coolest brush and I love it and now I want to keep using it forever and ever or until I get bored of it tomorrow.)

Summary:

Sherlock has to deal with the results of his poor decisions, and it takes a bit of uncomfortable work to get clear. In the end, though, that work is worthwhile, and gets him closer to where he wants to be.

And on another note, Greg gets to be the one in the know for a change.
