"How bad does it look?" Dwyer couldn't quite spot the injury he had on his backside.
injury / death meme | closed.
❝ Let me see... ❞ She mumbles, helping him to push aside the dark robes for her to examine the spidery incline of his back. The cloth was torn and smeared with dirt, as was the skin beneath. She could see several cloudy patches of yellow, some already beginning to darken.
❝ It was pretty brave of you to cut through the line like that. ❞ She said, prodding one spot to see just how sore it might be. ❝ Though I suppose your horse didn’t see it that way... ❞
It had been quite a spectacle, really. Seeing him launched (backwards, mind you) from the saddle. Everyone has assumed the worst, until a lanky arm reached up and waved about like a flag.
No broken bones, only light cuts; but Dwyer was definitely going to feel this in the morning.

“They came out of nowhere.. I couldn’t react in time.”
injury / death meme | accepting.
❝ That’s okay. You’re gonna be fine. ❞ She attempts in comfort, though her heart is hammering in her ears as if a flock of birds sought escape from the inside. She had to be calm. She couldn’t let her fear show through.
She kept her hands at the wound, the scarf from her neck wrapped around the end of the arrow. The fabric beneath the press of her fingers was damp. She needed something dry, to change the wrapping, but she had nothing. She couldn’t leave her.
❝ Just keep looking at me— right at me. Okay, Sakura? ❞ Her sister’s eyes were only half open, brimmed with tears. Hinoka knew they weren't tears of pain, but perhaps tears of sorrow. They seemed to look past her, and finally the elder girl broke. She turned her head to the field and screamed for help. Her throat burned with how hard she threw her voice. When she turned back Sakura was still under her touch.
❝ Sakura? ❞ One hand raised to cup her cheek, smearing tiny clouds of blood upon her pale skin. Silence met her in response, the wind whispering through the grass around her body.
❝ Sakura...? ❞

“You should’ve told me earlier.. I could’ve helped you!”
injury / death meme | accepting.
❝ I’ll be alright. ❞ She insists, good hand supporting herself against her mount. The pegasus tittered in a nervous fashion, though it made no move to leave her side. It was unfortunate that Kamui had seen her, and she willed him away with all of her might; concerned at being seen in such a state.
One of her troops had dropped heir naginata while airborn, and while diving to retrieve it was assaulted by several enemy malig knights. Hinoka had rushed to intervene without thinking, and as she parried one blow and axe caught her along her left side. The sharp end of the weapon had swung up towards her face, if she hadn’t moved when she did the injury would have been much worse.
The first cut hit near her navel in a line to her bottom rib, the fabric of her clothes frayed to revel the skin had split beneath. Thankfully it wasn’t as deep as to spill her insides. However the slash that had caught her forearm after pulsed with every beat of her heart, the flesh jagged where the blade had come away near her shoulder. Both wounds stung, but her arm was loosing the most blood, drops of red leaking between the cracks in her armor and falling from her fingertips.
She smiled as best she could at him, teeth partially grit. It wasn’t a fatal wound, it just hurt. More than she thought it would.
❝ I just need to get to a healer. Hah... ❞ She tried to laugh, but was out of breath. She sighed in defeat. ❝ Would you lend me a hand...? Or a shoulder? ❞

RP starters: Injured/death
“Hey, you’re bleeding!”
“Can you move?”
“You will be fine, I promise..”
“Don’t you dare to leave me. Not now.”
“We can get you fixed in no time.”
“Please get up.”
“I refuse to believe it will all end like this!”
“You won’t die, not on my watch!”
“Ouch.. that must hurt “
“Shit, wait.. I’ll patch you up.”
“What were you thinking?! You could’ve killed yourself!”
“I came too late..”
“You should’ve told me earlier.. I could’ve helped you!”
“I swear to god if you die on our way back I’ll kill you.”
“It’s nothing, just a scratch.”
“Look, no need to fuss over me. I’m fine!”
“Well, you see.. It’s a really long story. Will you help me or not?”
“I can’t make it.”
“I am dying. There is nothing you can do about it.”
“It’s not your fault, okay?”
“It just hurts… hurts so goddamn much.”
“Are you going to let me suffer more?”
“There is no happy ending to this.”
“I have been through worse…”
“I’m not going to lie, this is not how I planned this would go down.”
“They came out of nowhere.. I couldn’t react in time.”
“How bad does it look?”
“I knew this day would come.. sooner or later.”

❝ Shhh! ❞ She urged, though Orochi’s voice was harldy loud. She glanced back and forth, as if she were a spy trading deadly information. What was that saying about the walls having ears...? Or eyes...? Either way, her eyes met with no proof of anyone lingering about the corners. She sighed, and continued.
❝ I’m not sure if you recall, but many years ago mother spoke of an... arrangement with a certain lord. One she thought I might like. ❞ She said, eyes averted instead of making contact with the divinator. ❝ I was less than interested, but I didn’t voice my concern to her, instead asking Ryoma to intervene on my behalf. After that, I thought the matter to be finished, but... ❞
Hinoka now produced the formal scroll she had been clutching, the vellum crisp and new. She regarded it with embarrassment, clumsy fingers unfurling the content.
❝ The province has written to us now in hopes to make an alliance in the war, to pledge their loyalty to Hoshido. This would be a good move for us, however— ❞ Her lip curled. ❝ They—um... They speak of the marriage that mother once mentioned... involving me... ❞
A resignation broke over her face, hesitation and almost helplessness melding together. She felt her legs turn restless, but kept firmly planted in her seat. She’d already paced around enough on her own before deciding to seek advice from the woman now seated across from her.
❝ I know this would help Ryoma— our whole country... but... ❞ She rambled, sentences fading off into pauses. ❝ I guess I was hoping a fortune might help... ❞
She felt so foolish, cheeks still flushed as if they were bit at by the cold. She didn’t even want to admit the feelings she might harbour for someone else.
It was a shame Hinoka didn’t come to her more often for divinations or any kind of advice at least. She had watched her grown up and not to forget that Orochi was older than her as well, giving her plenty of experience with certain subjects. Still, she had always felt like the princess would end up just fine. She was a strong, likable woman with a heart of gold.
“Everything that is said in this room, will stay in this room. You have my word.” The diviner became more curious by the second, though she was partially distracted by how adorable Hinoka was. What could possibly bring that darling blush to her face?
Smiling reassuringly, Orochi waited until the other sat down and listened to her request. It was surprising to say the least, but it was hard to contain her excitement.
“Marriage, you say? Lady Hinoka, could it be… Is there someone you have your eyes on? Whoever it is, they will be blessed to have you as their wife. ” There were a few names that came to mind, people whom she had known from working together with them, but she tried to think of that one person who stands out from the rest. One that is very close or has tried to make a move on her.
“Now tell me, what is it you would like to know about marriage? I have read many love fortunes before and I will be able to tell you all there is to know.”

❝ I— ❞ Before the princess could get a word in edge-wise, she was assaulted with well meaning pleasantries and that honeyed smile. So suddenly had the tables turned that surprise gripped at the red head with a fervor that matched the Nohrian woman who stood mere inches before her.
To Charlotte’s credit it was merely much speculation on Hinoka’s part, watching her hover about Ryoma’s tent every now and again clutching something. A present perhaps, though no one could be positively sure until they beheld the contents themselves.
Her comment about weapons actually gave the princess pause. Amber eyes made a very quick scan of the perfect blonde curls and the general shape of Charlotte’s features. She very much reminded her of Princess Camilla and her curvy elegance. Her manners seemed more than satisfactory as well... was she perhaps a noble? Or of blood at least?
❝ If you don’t mind my asking, may I enquire to your social standing? ❞ She asked, as such things would make it more than obvious as to why she would seek Ryoma’s approval. In a way. ❝ Forgive me, I don’t believe I even got your name. I’m assuming, since you know my brother, that you know who I am. ❞
Hinoka held to her careful scepticism, but also prayed she was not stepping on the toes of some political match up.
The accusations halt, at least for the moment; Charlotte’s smile slowly settles into something easier, fed by the princess’s shock more than settling down. “Briefly. It would be rude not to introduce myself to all my new commanders, after all!”
Lady Hinoka included, although she’s all but ruined her footing for a proper introduction unless she treads lightly and spins this into something favorable.
“I don’t know what sort of nasty things you’ve been hearing about me,” a remorseful look and the honey in her voice almost too thick for the moment, but nipping suspicion in the bud now is the only thing she’s concerned with. One hand flutters to her chest– to mirror the ache in her heart, the shudder to echo how ghastly such words really are. “But I sincerely hope you don’t take them to heart. I’d hate to think you already think ill of me, before I’ve had a chance to step forth and say hello!”
( Honestly, it is a little much, though– but Charlotte keeps pressing forth, keen on clearing the air, although the hand not holding her fluttering heart still remains a tight fist at her side. )
“He offered to teach me, when I remarked on the differences between clubs and axes. I merely wanted to make him something to sincerely thank him for his time. I did not mean to offend at all, milady.”

❝ Be that as it may, I don’t want to have to mention to Takumi that you wouldn’t let the healer look at you. ❞ She countered with a wry smile. For all of her little brother’s gruff ways, he cared deeply about those close to him, as she was quite sure his retainers cared for him.
She allowed Hinata to fall in beside her, her pegasus on the other side. Her mount chewed lazily upon it’s bit, tail swaying back and forth, it’s attitude relaxed. The winged creatures were usually much easier to handle than normal war horses, their disposition so closely knit to their riders.
❝ No scratches on me today, thankfully. Every encounter felt so quick, it was all I could do to keep charging foreword. ❞ She rubbed the palm of her hand across her cheek to free a bit of stray hair. ❝ Did it feel that way for you as well? ❞
Hinata scratched his head, feeling a little useless that he didn’t have anything else to offer the princess other than his company. Though what she said was true. Hinoka didn’t really carry much around. Though he perked up a bit when she asked him to accompany her.
“Huh? Oh it’s nothing to worry about, really,” Hinata insisted, waving it off as she dismounted. His shoulder was undoubtably sore but it didn’t feel awful anymore. “Everything is back where it should be.” That didn’t sound as swell as it had in his head.
“What about you? Are you hurt at all?” he asked. Hinoka was a little less susceptible to taking damage from a flying pegasus, Hinata knew, but she was very vulnerable to arrows.

Despite the warmth she had in her words, Kamui was seemingly filled with disquiet. She watched his lips tighten on the pale pallor of his face, stirring disappointment within her. It seemed part of her really expected them to fall into some pseudo routine of normalcy, despite all the time that had passed between them. It was immature, and she felt a mild agitation at her own foolish expectations.
Jealousy burned like coals in the palms of her hands and prickled along her skin. For what they had— was all the could have been, and was supposed to be, between them. This affection he held for his Nohrian ‘family’ was like a treasure plundered from her. And worse still, it was a treasure she could never steal back, time having already cast it in stone. Despite this malcontent, she hid it from her face, not wishing to burden Kamui with such things.
❝ ...Would they ever hurt you? ❞ She asked instead, the mood serious despite the gentle look in eyes. This was honest curiosity of Nohr, and even more so concern for Kamui.
❝ Do you know them so well that you are sure? ❞
Even with everything that had happened aside, she wanted him to be happy. That was what she told herself now, studying his face. He deserved that.
╰ ⊰ he kept the blankets on his futon turned back and spent a few moments smoothing them. there was no real need to do other than to occupy his idle hands. the nervousness he’d felt before hadn’t quite abated. perhaps it would in time.
many a time his siblings had visited him in the tower for conversations just like these. he could open himself up, share his thoughts and dreams and feelings until he could sleep. any potential nostalgia was spoiled by the differences between the settings. familiar dark stone walls and thick velvet drapes had been replaced by hoshido’s airy open rooms with bamboo sliding doors. the paintings on the walls featured a language he didn’t understand. there was no mattress, or bed frame, no nohrian maids or other comforts. even the way hinoka seated herself was foreign to him; while she knelt he sat with his legs crossed.
she apologized to him but her reasons for doing so were short of the mark. he felt suffocated by the mass of reminders everywhere he looked rather than the people that lived here. would she understand or feel offended if he were to try and explain? he shook his head to clear his thoughts and then left it bowed. his eyes betrayed his hesitation by glancing off to one side. yet when he did speak it was with the same honesty as before. ⊱ ╮
❝ ITS NOT THAT. You’ve all been wonderful… Everything I’ve known, everyone I’ve grown up with… I can’t help yearning for it all despite being happy here. I miss them as much as everyone here missed me. At least, that’s how I try to understand it… My heart feels torn. ❞

Hinoka gazed at the lumpy field, spotted with brush and trees. Her lips were drawn in a firm line, mind likewise drawn into two different subjects. For one, they would have to travel further to find a place for the convoy to make camp, for another, she wondered who exactly pushed Dwyer to accompany her in the scouting. Well, she supposed if anything she should think of this as an opportunity.
❝ For starters, though this spot is relatively open, the ground is uneven. It’s hard to set the tents in such terrain. ❞ She made a motioning movement with her hand. ❝ The shrubs are also a problem, sometimes they are unavoidable, but too many will hide insects that risk contaminating our food stores. ❞
Her eyes carefully wandered over to the withdrawn youth, observing him for a moment, perhaps as if awaiting confirmation that any of the information stuck. In the retreating light, it was difficult to see exactly what emotions played upon his face. She shifted her feet against the earth, raising her weapon onto her shoulder.
❝ We’ll keep heading north, beyond the hill. Hopefully luck will favor us and we’ll find a spot quickly. ❞
@nakiwakare
Continued from here.
“No; I was just following orders…”
The falling sun looming over the silhouettes of trees, Dwyer was left without his mount. He didn’t really care if he found a suitable place for the night, but because he had company, he made the rare effort to try. Unfortunately, survival skills weren’t his strong suit. He turned to the scarlet-haired woman. They couldn’t just stand around unless they wanted to get attacked by a hungry beast.
“Any suggestions?”
They were running out of time– it was becoming more difficult to see.
